Bryant, a Liberal party member, is charged with criminal negligence causing death and with dangerous driving causing death in the incident.
Bryant was driving in the upscale shopping district of Toronto when he had a minor collision with Darcy Allan Sheppard, 33, a bicycle courier.
Witnesses say that Sheppard grabbed Bryant’s side door when he began to drive away in his Saab convertible. They then say that Bryant accelerated and began to swerve to throw off Sheppard — even veering into oncoming traffic and driving on the sidewalk. They told police that Bryant drove near lampposts to try to brush off Sheppard and eventually rammed him into a mailbox.
Bryant then drove into a luxury hotel parking area and left the damaged car. However, he was filmed by a television crew leaving the hotel.
Bryant was best known for calling for the cars of dangerous speeders to be seized, telling such drivers “We will crush your car, we will crush the parts.”
