The girl’s family reportedly agreed to the marriage out of fear that she was about to have sex with kids her own age. By some logic, they believed it would be better to arrange a marriage between a 14-year-old girl and 23-year-old stranger. They signed a “contract” for marriage and included a dowry provision requiring, among other things, for Mosby to turn over a watch and a ring from Wal-Mart.
When relatives intervened and took the girl to prevent sexual abuse, Mosby reportedly threatened them that he would do them harm if they did not “give me back my wife in 72 hours.” Not long afterward, someone fired three shots into the home of the relatives.
To make the case more grotesque, Mosby allegedly had sex with the girl three times in the home of her parents when they were present. He is being held on statutory rape. However, there is no indication of charges against the parents, which seems a bit odd since they facilitated and profited from the arrangement.
While this was a marriage claimed to be in accordance with Muslim faith, local Muslims denounced Mosby for failing to comply with the law of the land.
