Toys for Cops: D.C. Police Officers Allegedly Caught on Tape Stealing From Toys for Tots

Four District of Columbia police officers have been put on desk duty after they were reportedly caught on a video tape, shown below, stealing from Toys for Tots. This appears to be a trend this month with police accused of stealing laptops and XBox from cars along the roads.

On Christmas Day, the department’s community outreach director, Yvonne Smith, responded to the story with an email to residents of the Southeast neighborhood not to dwell on the story and to instead emphasize the positive. She stressed that the little problem with the police stealing toys from children “starts off Christmas on a sour note, puts distance between the community and the police, and worst of all, tarnishes the image of the Department during a time when we are trying to build strong relationships to foster trust that ultimately helps us solve crimes.” Perhaps residents should talk about all the toys that the police did not steal.

In the meantime, Marine Jason Carper a coordinator for Toys for Tots has been arrested for stealing funds from the charity.
