Goucher College Professor Arrested on Charges of Genocide

Scholars At Risk NetworkStudents at the Goucher College are probably used to faculty being absent to present papers on subjects like genocide, but in the case of Leopold Munyakazi, he was pulled away to present a defense on genocide. Professor Munyakazi has been arrested on charges of genocide in Rwanda.

Munyakazi has been suspended him with pay. He is charged with murder and several genocide-related counts in 1994 when more than a half-million Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed.

He has insisted that these allegations are untrue:

Munyakazi, who is Hutu, told The Sun that the charges that he helped incite attacks on Tutsis are false. “I never did this. I myself was targeted by the militias. How could I collaborate with people who were hunting me?”

He also previously argued at the deaths in the country were not genocide.
