Former Adjunct Law Professor Arrested After Taking Two Guns and 53 Rounds of Ammunition in Law Library

Former University of Louisville Adjunct Law Professor Thomas H. Irwin, 56, was arrested this week after bringing two handguns and 53 rounds of ammunition into the campus law library. Irwin had been declared a “persona non grata” in December 2008 for alleged harassment of another employee at the school.

Irwin insisted that he was just going shooting later in the day. He was stopped on university grounds and escorted off the property. He had a license for the weapons and thus was only charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon and with criminal trespass.

The university bars guns from campus. This has recently been a matter of controversy around the country where the NRA and other organizations have demanded state laws guaranteeing the right to bring your gun to class. (here and here). It is not clear whether Socrates experimented with weapons in the development of the Socratic technique, but Professors Smith and Wesson certainly tend to concentrate the academic mind.
