Grandmother Tortured and Burned To Death in Ghana as Witch

We have another witch burning in Africa. Madam Hemmah, 72, is a grandmother who was burned to death — allegedly at the instigation of an evangelist preacher, Pastor Samuel Fletcher Sagoe, 55. Many evangelists in Africa believe in witches. Indeed, one of Sarah Palin’s favorite ministers described himself as a witchhunter from Kenya.

A student nurse bravely tried to rescue the woman who died from her extensive burns 24 hours later. The woman had been tortured into confessing before kerosene was poured on her and ignited. Arrested with Sagoe were Samuel Ghunney, 50, Emelia Opoku, 37; Nancy Nana Ama Akrofie, 46, and Mary Sagoe, 52.

Ghunney is accused of extracting the confession and calling for the kerosene. The pastor and other suspects reportedly claimed that they had only poured anointing oil on the old woman and the oil accidentally caught fire.

The bravery of this nurse, Deborah Pearl Adumoah, is an inspiration and adds some redemption for Ghana in having people like her who are willing to risk their lives in such circumstances.
