Diamond actually belonged to Smith’s nephew and was left with her as he traveled.
She appears not to have told him and he assumed that she had run away until an environmental enforcement officer found the dog’s burned body hidden under a mound of grass.
She is now charged with ill treatment of animals and torture, according to an arrest warrant. The range of sentencing goes from 180 days to five years in prison.
It will be interesting if the religious defense has equal success in killing dogs as it has for killing children. As noted in an earlier column, parents are routinely given shorter sentences when they cause the death due to religious principles.
