
The father and his brother took the woman into the doctor when she complained about stomach pains. All three were surprised to learn that she was six months pregnant. On the way home, the father pulled over and stabbed the woman 25 times in her stomach with a sword. He later confessed to the crime and his brother was charged with premeditated murder. Notably, the state is holding the boyfriend in custody for his own protection to prevent his imminent execution by the family.
There are almost three dozen recorded cases of women being executed in honor killings each year in Jordan. While viewed as more modern than most of its neighbors, Jordan’s legislature still opposes efforts to force more severe punishment for honor killings, which are often the subject of low sentences or dismissals.
