There is a disturbing case out of Snaresbrook Crown Court in England where an Islamic studies tutor raped his 14-year-old pupil and left her pregnant. Mohammed Islam, 31, reportedly started molesting the schoolgirl in 2010 when she was just nine while teaching her the Koran. He has been sentenced to 19 years.
The girl said that the religious position of the teacher left her without a way out of the abuse. For his part, Mohammad Islam said that the nine year old initiated the sex. He only admitted to the rape when the girl decided that she would testify against him. She also delayed an abortion so that tests could show that Islam was the father.
What is a bit chilling is the statement of the father who offered a victim impact statement that “In our religion she is no longer considered a virgin and is therefore unable or unlikely to get married to have a family.” That would seriously make me reconsider the sect within a religion that I am following.
Islam admitted to rape, four counts of sexually assaulting a child and two of sexual activity with a child.
The 19 year sentence may seem a bit low to some but it is on the high end for England where sentences tend to be lower generally. Notably, however, a Christian priest this week with the Salvation Army in India was given 40 years for raping a 12-year-old in church over the course of two months.
