Saudi Cleric and Television Celebrity Counsels on How to Beat One’s Wife

He has been called the Saudi Dr. Phil with a twist. Dr. Muhammad Al-’Arifi explained on Saudi and Kuwaiti television in September that Muslim men should first try “admonishments” but should eventually beat disobedient wives. “Beating in the face is forbidden, even when it comes to animals,” he explained. “Even if you want your camel or donkey to start walking, you are not allowed to beat it in the face. If this is true for animals, it is all the more true when it comes to humans. However, the question is how such material can be broadcast in two countries on a major television station.
