Father And Son Removed From Cardinals Game After Father Asks 15-Year-Old Son To Hold Beer While He Took A Picture

100px-Arizona_Cardinals_logo.svg170px-A_bottle_of_BudweiserWe previously saw the case of a professor who had his child taken away from him (and was barred from his own home) because his son mistakenly picked up a hard lemonade drink rather than just lemonade. By that measure, John Coulter is lucky. He was just threatened with arrest and kicked out of an Arizona Cardinals game after he asked his son to hold his beer while he took a picture.

Coulter was at the preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys when he decided to take a picture. He landed his beer to his 15 -year-old son and was taking the picture when two undercover officers with the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control nabbed him. They told him that he just supplied beer to an underaged boy. While Coulter pointed out that he was just taking a picture, it was not enough.

Sgt. Wesley Kuhl of the Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control says that, if anything, the department was lenient with him: “Providing alcohol to an underage person or an underage person in possession of alcohol is a Class 1 misdemeanor. The consequences could be up to, and this is a maximum, of two years in jail, $2,500 fine and three years probation.” But he didn’t provide beer to his 15 year old son anymore than handing him the keys to the car to hold is the same as allowing him to drive. His son held a cup while his Dad took a picture. It is pretty clear that the Department of Liquor License and Control does not have enough to do if this is their concept of a righteous bust.

I realize that there is underage drinking at games, particularly with teenagers around this age. However, what happened to a simple warning? If the boy was drinking the beer, it is pretty obvious that they would arrest them. Worse yet, Coulter (a season ticket holder) was not able to see the Cardinals beats the Cowboys.

  1. Oxa, This is Wi. There are no alcohol laws!! After I bartended[early 80’s] an alcohol awareness law was put into place for bartenders, but even that didn’t pass easily. We’re currently trying to strengthen the most lenient DUI laws in the country and it’s a donnybrook. This is an alcoholic state.

  2. Sooo…..a legal prohibition (drinking) age. Remind me again why we have one? (Answer: MADD lobbying)

  3. When the Cardinals moved from Saint Louis a certain song was sung in jest:

    [music]
…..and London Bridge, has fallen down
    And MOved to ARIZona!
    Oh, I know why.

Sustantiate the rumor that the English sense of humor
is drying than a Texas corn..
    When you’re from down South
    And open your mouth..
We always know what to put there.

I wanna go home to the Armadilla,
Country music in Amarilla and Abilene
Its the prettiest woman and the hairiest music you’ve ever seen.

Now. When the Cardinals move out of Arizona for greener pastures then those opCays are gonna have to bust people in an empty stadium.

  4. nick spinelli – You mean it’s possible to get a job serving alcohol without knowing anything about the state alcohol laws?

  5. Google is making a pitch to the NFL to have an internet paid package for all their games to be broadcast on YouTube. That would be the joining of two great religions.

  6. Under what authority did the liquor agents remove the father and son from the stadium? They are ticket holders and had a contractual right to be there.

With some people it seems football is a religion, so this should be classified as a religious ceremony as per ARS 4-249 🙂

  7. Why should I believe that the child was not going to drink the beer? How often do you suppose the police hear a similar story? If the police accept the story in this case, shouldn’t they be required to accept it in all cases? Do we really want police officers making that call, or is that a function for the Courts? I’d say it’s for the Courts. (And the cynical part of me believes that if the officers did not enforce the law, they’d be being accused of favoring the rich/well connected/or whatever-else-people-can-dream-up because they want to belittle authority.)

  8. Gene, Thanks much for the link. You get a ballbusting assist on about 8 or so Bud drinkers.

    And, it wasn’t Trader Vic’s.

  9. OS, Wow!! IMHO Willie Mays was the greatest ballplayer ever. He did everything better than everyone. How it must have bugged him when that narcissistic JoeD always insisted on being introduced as, “The greatest living ballplayer.” He was one of the greatest, but not as great as Mays.

  10. “Although Warren Zevon might disagree.”

Only if the stepdad was a werewolf and they were drinking at Trader Vic’s.

And if his hair was perfect.

  11. Nick,
Our family attended the last game held in Sportsman’s Stadium on Grand Avenue. We had great seats on the third base line. Before the game, Dizzy Dean came out and gave a short talk from the pitchers mound before singing, “The Wabash Cannonball.” The Cards lost, but they were playing the Giants. We got to see some of the greatest players ever to don a uniform–Willie Mays made a couple of circus catches and hit a grand slam home run. It was also the last game Orlando Cepeda played for the Giants, because after the game, he was traded to the Cards. That was a great trade for the Cards.

After that, we went to the new stadium further downtown. I have not been back to St. Louis since that one was torn down and replaced.

  12. OS, Thanks for the rescue and the tip on censorship. Regarding St. Louis, I have several friends from that great city. I have been to the two most recent incarnations of Busch Stadium, but was not in the Midwest for the original. Which Busch Stadium did you attend? The one built in the 60’s was the horrible multipurpose monolith. Augie tried to have Bud be the ONLY beer served in all MLB ballparks back in the 70’s or 80’s maybe? Thankfully saner heads prevailed. The last cheap beer night[10 cent] was in Blouise’s beloved Municipal Stadium. They were playing the Texas Rangers, managed @ the time by Billy Martin. The fans got out of hand and started throwing beer @ Ranger’s players. Well, this was a Billy Martin team so they went into the stands w/ bats. I believe the game was forfeited.

  13. Gene, I would LOVE that link. It will be shared w/ every committed Bud drinker I know.

  14. Waldo, Nor do I. But, buying a 15 year old hard liquor drinks[even though girly umbrella ones] is not healthy in my view. Being Italian, I was given wine to sip @ a young age. My Irish uncle would let me sip his beer listening to Red Sox games. But, a 15 year old girl, sitting in a bar, drinking pina colada’s, w/ her stepfather, is unseemly to me. Although Warren Zevon might disagree. Maybe I’m Victorian but I don’t ever remember being called that. On a positive note, the more common scenario would be a 18-20 year old kid having their mom/dad buy them a beer. I have no problem w/ that.

  15. Nick, I’ve got no problem with a parent allowing their teenage son or daughter to have a drink. I think responsible drinking for teenagers under parental supervision is much better than complete ban followed by complete, unsupervised freedom to buy and drink on one’s 21st birthday.
