Poll: Only 28 Percent of the Public Has “High Confidence” in Higher Education

A new poll conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago (commissioned by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression) shows that only 28% of Americans have a lot of trust in higher education. Academia has continued to alienate much of the country as an orthodox echo chamber. As with media outlets, the result has been falling interest and trust in these institutions. The poll asked “How much confidence, if any, do you have in U.S. colleges and universities?”

Only 28% said they had a “great deal of confidence in colleges and universities.” Not surprisingly, given the ideological balance at most schools, the highest levels of trust came from Democrats and liberals. However, even this group only showed a 40% high confidence rate. Among Republicans, it drops to 12% and among independents it drops to 28%.

For most businesses, such negative reactions would be viewed as catastrophic. For academia, it will not matter a whit.

It is still personally beneficial for professors and administrators to push ideological agendas and maintain the lack of intellectual diversity on campuses. These professors are not challenged in their writings or their statements. They dominate publications, awards, and associations. In the meantime, these schools still receive sufficient support from alumni and, in the case of public universities, public funding.

This could not come at a worse time as many decide that college is simply not worth the money. At the same time, falling birthrates are impacting dropping applications. Others have little interest in going to institutions where they must hide their political viewpoints or values.

We have seen the same phenomenon in the media where media outlets are collapsing in viewership or readership but reporters are resisting every effort to return to a more neutral and objective basis for coverage. Recently, the Washington Post’s new publisher and CEO William Lewis dropped a truth bomb on his writers by telling them “Let’s not sugarcoat it…We are losing large amounts of money. Your audience has halved in recent years. People are not reading your stuff. Right. I can’t sugarcoat it anymore.”

The response from the media has been a campaign against Lewis and another editor tasked with saving the newspaper from itself. The New York Times, National Public Radio, and other outlets have piled on Lewis with a series of attack pieces. This is being actively and openly supported by reporters at the Post and could well work in pressuring owner Jeff Bezos. The result will be to stay the course of plunging trust and readership at a paper that is hemorrhaging money and readers.

We need great universities and great newspapers as a nation. We need Princeton and the Post. That is why this trend is so alarming. These are hardened silos that seem impenetrable to efforts to restore trust in their product.

  1. There is also another factor, there are many good universities in the world and young people are eager to enrich themselves with different cultures.

Another determining factor is the ridiculous price that is paid in this country to go to university, when in Europe, Asia, Japan there are very good universities and they can do it for a quarter of the price.

As for us parents, we are trying by all means to prevent our children from going to universities where they are brainwashed.

My daughter studies at IE Business School in Madrid ranked by Bloomberg Businessweek – Best B-Schools for Europe- 6th in Europe and by Forbes – Best Business Schools List – 6th in the world.

Very proud that she decided to reject admissions from universities in the USA.

As a curious case, in their classes they mock all the DEI policies, inclusive language and vain activism that are plaguing all our universities in the United States.

  2. Make sure this goes viral:

“Justice Jackson failed to disclose husband’s medical malpractice consulting fees for years. She knew she was required to as she disclosed his fees in first report in 2012. Then she failed to disclose these fees for a decade, as she admitted in 2022 filing. Paging @SenWhitehouse.

Jackson’s amended 2020 report filed in 2022 when nominated to Supreme Court says “some of my previously filed reports inadvertently omitted. . consulting income that my spouse periodically receives from consulting on medical malpractice cases.” Which years??

Despite acknowledging this failure to disclose, Jackson has not corrected forms. Her husband earned fees for helping companies/doctors in litigation, not policy debates. Which companies? Which cases?

Did they appear before Justice Jackson at district court or court of appeals? Did any companies who worked with her husband appear before her? Why hasn’t Jackson corrected/amended her forms?

Center For Renewing America @amrenewctr filed an ethics complaint with Judicial Conference. No outrage from @Senwhitehouse, @SenatorDurbin, @RepHankJohnson, @RepRaskin or media. Democrats don’t care about ethics, they just want to attack conservative Justices.”

  3. Meanwhile, America’s Brightest President – A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Building High-Speed Internet and Electric Charging Stations!

“In 2021, the Biden Administration got $42.45 billion from Congress to deploy high-speed Internet to millions of Americans. Years later, it has not connected even 1 person with those funds. In fact, it now says that no construction projects will even start until 2025 at earliest,” Carr wrote.

Carr is specifically slamming the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, which allocated $42.45 billion to support broadband infrastructure and adoption.

The program was established by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), otherwise known as the so-called bipartisan infrastructure bill. The bill had no conservative victories and had many leftist carveouts, as Breitbart News detailed.

Congress passed the infrastructure bill in 2021, which would mean that the BEAD program has had little success in its two years since Biden passed the bill.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also struggled to explain why Biden has only built “seven or eight” electric vehicle charging stations, which the funding also came from the IIJA.

“The timeline is bad. The policy cuts that the Biden Administration have made are even worse. The Biden Administration has set up a $42.45 billion program that is poised to miss the mark and leave rural communities behind,” Carr said in a statement to Breitbart News.

Carr continued, saying that the BEAD program fails to close the “digital divide,” or the gap between with those with high-speed internet and those without.

“The Biden Administration is barreling towards a broadband blunder. Congress has appropriated enough money to end the digital divide, but the Biden Administration is squandering the moment by putting partisan political goals above smart policy,” Carr explained further. “It is doing so through rate regulation, through union, technology, and DEI preferences, and through a thumb on the scale for government run networks. All of this threatens to leave rural communities behind.”

  4. Fauci said today

There were more hospitalizations and deaths in red states than there were in blue states

Has there EVER been a bigger liar than this ass hole? If someone like Elvis bug or Svelaz-George made this mistake, we would chalk it up to ignorance or stupidity. But the evil fvck Fauci knows goddam well the difference between rates and total numbers.

I’m not a proponent of violence, but if that little cretin were standing in front of me…

We wont even get into how those numbers stack up on the scale that matters. Red cities vs blue cities.

It reminded me of when Dennis called Alabama the “wild west” because the gun violence RATE was higher than NY state. Of course, he ignored the fact that 90% of the gun violence in AL occurred in bright blue Birmingham.

Start with a conclusion and look for evidence to support it. Its the libtard way.

  5. And thanks to all the members of Congress and Homeland Security Secretary, igbungayayuyembeb, I’m not sure I’m going to introduce you all the way

    ——Joe Biden today

  6. Only 28% said they had a “great deal of confidence in colleges and universities.”

That is just a tad lower than Biden’s approval. Now there are 4 more reasons to expel both parties:

The Congressional Budget Office has released new figures on Biden’s terrific free-fall economy:
deficits are now projected to be $1.9 trillion in fiscal year 2024 which is an increase in $400 billion from the previous forecast in February. And Republicans helped.

It would be truly American if Hollywood elites Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Jimmy Kimmel, Jack Black and Biden’s illuminati actors paid “their fair share of Taxes” just as Biden often says of the wealthy, except when he is hitting on them for money.

Changes in CBO’s Baseline Projections Since February 2024

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that if no new legislation affecting spending and revenues is enacted, the budget deficit for fiscal year 2024 will total $1.9 trillion. That amount is $408 billion (or 27 percent) more than the $1.5 trillion deficit the agency estimated in February 2024, when it last updated its baseline budget projections.1 Since then, CBO has increased its projection of outlays in 2024 by $363 billion (or 6 percent) and decreased its estimate of revenues by $45 billion (or 1 percent).

About 80 percent of the increase in the projected deficit in 2024 is driven by four factors that all boost projected outlays.

A $145 billion increase in projected outlays for student loans stems mostly from revisions that the Administration made to the estimated subsidy costs of previously issued loans and from the Administration’s proposed rule to reduce many borrowers’ balances on student loans.

Projected outlays for deposit insurance have increased by about $70 billion because the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) is not recovering payments it made when resolving bank failures in 2023 and 2024 as quickly as CBO previously anticipated. (In CBO’s projections, that increase is almost entirely offset by deficit reductions in future years as those payments are recovered.)

Newly enacted legislation increased projected discretionary outlays by $60 billion.
    NB: Thank you Republicans!

Projected outlays for Medicaid have increased by about $50 billion, mainly because actual outlays thus far in 2024 have been higher than expected.

    https://www.cbo.gov/publication/60419#_idTextAnchor069

Medicaid “outlays thus far in 2024 have been higher than expected” because Americans are sicker than ever.

  7. Professor Turley Writes:

“These professors are not challenged in their writings or their statements”.
    ………………………………….

For 5 years this blog has had an in-house st00ge to make absolutely sure these comment threads are pro-MAGA all the way.

In all fairness to Professor Turley, the st00ge in question could be a foreign troll farm. Or a domestic troll farm staffed by MAGA extremists.

But whoever this presence might be, they dominate these threads so completely that no discussions of can possibly transpire unless said troll is at the very center.

Readers should look for clumps of seemingly unrelated commenters parroting and praising each other. This is the st00ge choreographing fake conversations.

Again, Professor Turley is possibly the victim here. And perhaps he can’t acknowledge this issue for reasons he’d rather not address.

But the constant presence of this st00ge makes a mockery of Turley’s criticism regarding academics whose writings and statements go largely unchallenged.

  10. From Turley’s Linked Poll Source

On average, most Americans surveyed in FIRE’s May poll reported “some” confidence in U.S. colleges and universities (42% vs. 40% in Gallup). But compared to the 2023 Gallup poll, fewer Americans reported “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in colleges and universities (28% vs. 36% in Gallup), and more Americans reported “very little” confidence or “none at all” (30% vs. 22% in Gallup).

How does confidence in higher education compare to confidence in other institutions? According to Gallup, Americans report similar levels of confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court (27%) and banks (26%). In the extremes, though, Americans are far more confident in small businesses (65%) and the military (60%) than they are in colleges and universities. They are far less confident in Congress (8%), television news (14%), and the criminal justice system (17%).

Question: Has Professor Turley ever written a column exploring this gaping lack of confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court?

Answer: ‘No, and don’t expect such a column’. Turley would have to acknowledge this court’s Federalist majority is disconnected from America.

  11. Jonathan: DJT claims undocumented immigrants are “destroying America”. Trump promises he will conduct mass deportations if re-elected. Will he deport all the undocumented that work at his properties? Not likely. DJT built his real estate empire with undocumented labor. Need proof?

In the early 1980s when DJT was building Trump Tower he used a contractor who employed Polish workers “off the books”. The Polish workers were paid about $4-$5 dollars an hour–working 12-hour shifts, seven days a week. In 1991 a NY US District Court ruled that “there is strong evidence of a tacit agreement by the parties [DJT and his contactor] to employ Polish workers and to deprive them of the benefits ordinarily accorded to non-union workers on a union job, including contributions to the funds based on their wages”. The Court ordered DJT to pay $325,415.84 plus interest and attorney fees. DJT appealed but settled the case in 1999 for an undisclosed amount.

This is a pattern and practice for DJT over the years. When he loses in court, appeal and appeal. Delay things as long as you can and then settle when you can longer postpone the inevitable–and for a lesser amount. That usually works in the business world but not when you are a “convicted felon” in NY!

    1. Interesting what constitutes proof to dum dum Dennis.

  13. Advocacy Education, Advocacy Journalism. There is already another word for it: Propaganda!

  14. I have made a mach needed correction of mindless DM’s Marxist post. It’s provided below.

“The NY Court of Appeals, headed by Berekely-raised Marxist Rowan Wilson, who was appointed a judge by Gov. Andrew Homo and appointed to the Appeals Court by Gov. Kathy Huckster, as ruled that Juan “The Con” Merchan’s bogus gag order should remain in effect to advance the Marxist agenda.”

  15. Jonathan: Breaking news! The NY Court of Appeals (NY’s highest court) just rejected DJT’s request to have Judge Merchan’s gag order be lifted. After the NY jury found DJT guilty on all 34 criminal counts his lawyers told the Justice that the gag order should be lifted because the trial was over. Merchan rejected the motion as did the intermediate Appellate Division. Now NY’s highest court has also rejected DJT’s claim. In its short order the court said: “Appeal dismissed without costs, by the Court sua sponte, upon the ground that no substantial constitutional question is directly involved”. In laymen terms the court is saying: “Go away Mr. Trump. You are no different than any other convicted felon in NY where a gag order is imposed. Live with it!”.

      1. Gag orders have not been deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Yet. Therefore they can’t really say it violates his 1st amendment rights. Besides as a convicted felon he does have limited rights. He does not have the privilege of having full rights as a felon. That could be a problem for Trump

        1. “Gag orders have not been deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.”

          – George

No you understand who engineered the destruction of America.

        2. From Yale Law School:

In the 1976 case Nebraska Press Association v. Stuart, the Supreme Court created a three-part test to evaluate the constitutionality of a gag order that stopped a newspaper from publishing any confessions an accused murderer made to law enforcement: whether the publicity would harm the defendant’s right to a fair trial, whether the gag order is the least restrictive means possible to ensure that fairness, and whether the gag order will be effective.

          https://law.yale.edu/mfia/case-disclosed/when-silence-isnt-golden-how-gag-orders-can-evade-first-amendment-protections

So . . . SCOTUS has said that a gag order is acceptable under the First Amendment only if it helps the defendant get a fair trial and is no broader than necessary to achieve that end. Two points about that: (1) gagging the defendant can never be consistent with the First Amendment under that test, and (2) now that the trial is over, how can it have any use? It can’t, which means it’s unconstitutional, no? I mean, what is its current purpose: to protect the delicate feelings of the judge and prosecutor? And under the First Amendment that goal outweighs freedom of expression? To ask these questions is to answer them.

          1. Kansas Elder, far be it from me to know the reasoning of the New York Court of Appeals, but Trump still can appeal after sentencing on July 11. Perhaps the gag order is related to his sentencing date?

          2. And the totally erroneous, politically biased, and abjectly corrupt Supreme Court of 1973 was struck down, overturned, and embarrassed by the Supreme Court of 2022.

And the partial, biased, corrupt, and sycophantic Supreme Court of 1869 found not-prohibited secession to be prohibited; alas, without citation.

Because secession is not prohibited, secession is prohibited.

Let’s set a precedent here and now.

            Pay no attention to precedents.

Oh, and throw manifest and demonstrably corrupt judges, Justices, and courts in prison.

  16. The direction the colleges and universities would take was predicted in an early 1960s TV series called the Outer Limits, and specifically in the episode called “The Special One” (1964).

Here’s the story: Mr. Xeno from the planet Xenon selects highly intelligent Earth children to train as puppets for a coming invasion. Any fathers who get in his way are induced to jump out of a window several stories up. 14-year-old Kenny, Xeno’s second project, is well on his way to being well-groomed for his alien position. His father, of course, grows suspicious of this man coming between him and his boy at all hours of the day and night.

The closing narration for the “The Special One” is, “The mold of a man stems from the mind of a child. Educators and emperors have known this from time immemorial. So have tyrants.”

The “aliens” [i.e., Marxist Tyrants] have taken control over academia and over the minds of young people, who have been rendered incapable of thinking, reasoning, or understanding.
