Below is my column in the New York Post on the indictment of Mayor Eric Adams. The most serious charges may be the foreign campaign contributions and the use of straw man transactions to gain both unlawful contributions and increased matching funds. However, some of these charges are not nearly as overwhelming as suggested by the government. That may be why they are openly threatening Adams associates to cooperate or face ruin.

The federal five-count indictment of New York Mayor Eric Adams is on its face a damning document of alleged public corruption. The government is alleging that Turkish officials saw Adams as a rising star in the Democratic Party and started to groom him for influence.
However, once beyond the details of the opulent rooms and flight upgrades, there may be less here than meets the eye in some of these charges.
The campaign-contribution violations raise serious problems for Adams in the alleged solicitation of unlawful foreign contributions. Yet the counts must be read with caution. We have not seen the specific defenses to the allegations of using “straw men” to funnel unlawful contributions and the alleged favors bestowed on contributors. Indictments are one-sided and highly slanted interpretations of the facts by prosecutors to secure a conviction.
For example, many of the gifts from Turkish sources were realized in the form of upgrades on flights to business class or expensive hotel suites. It is not clear what Adams knew of the logistics for such travel or their inclusion in annual reports. Despite their public personas, many populist politicians tend to be a pampered class who expect to be feted in the best quarters as they speak as the “voice of the people.”
That was captured most vividly by NYC Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sashaying at the Met Gala in a designer dress reading “tax the rich.” It was a scene with a crushing irony. The dress itself was worth more than some people make in a year and it was just “loaned” to AOC despite being made specifically for her. She also did not pay for her ticket, which would cost $35,000.
It triggered an ethics investigation and allegations of ethical violations.
In one night, Ocasio-Cortez flaunted roughly half of the value of the alleged Adams gifts as she paraded as a social warrior among the social elite. The truly hilarious aspect was that it was the elite who were thrilled by the demonstration and subsidized it.
The Adams allegations would constitute a fairly crude form of corruption by today’s standards. For the Biden family, it looks like small potatoes. Adams lacked a Hunter and the type of labyrinth of accounts maintained by the Bidens to funnel millions from foreign sources.
One of the most discussed allegations concerns a high-rise building built by Turkish friends in Manhattan to serve as their new consulate. The Turks wanted the building opened before the arrival of the Turkish president in 2021, strongman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The problem is that, according to prosecutors, New York Fire Department officials found an array of dangerous defects in the building and believed that it was a fire risk. They refused to allow the building to open until it met those standards.
The government alleges that Turkish officials immediately dialed up their well-groomed ally, Adams, and told him that it was “his turn” to support Turkey.
Adams intervened and prosecutors say that FDNY officials were afraid for their jobs.
Once again, however, Adams has defenses. He can argue that New York is the home of the United Nations and a large population of diplomats and international organizations. This was a foreign country seeking to open a consulate and he intervened to avoid an embarrassing diplomatic tiff.
Suggesting that a push to cut short fire inspections may be difficult to maintain under a bribery theory. That was the type of expansive case that government attorney Jack Smith used against former Virginia Republican Gov. Robert McDonnell and it failed spectacularly before the Supreme Court.
There are other reasons besides flight upgrades why Adams might have facilitated a speed up of building approvals.
In the end, this is a Bob Menendez-lite indictment. Failing to publicly list how you moved from economy to business class on flights is hardly the stuff of “All the King’s Men.” It is more like “All the King’s Upgrades.”
The biggest problem for Adams is that the US Attorney’s Office went public with a threat for all of those who do not cooperate and pledged that more will be “held accountable.”
In other words, the indictment amplified the tune in a game of musical chairs. Anyone close to Adams may want to sit down before the music stops. That means that Adams can expect close associates to be testifying against him with the enthusiasm of those threatened with ruin by federal prosecutors.
If Eric Adams is convicted, it will be at the hands of his associates. The jury will not be particularly sympathetic with a politician snaring the Bentley Suite at the St. Regis Istanbul. Prosecutors love to play on such opulence like their use of Paul Manafort’s $15,000 Ostrich coat.
Combined with former friends and associates, it may be enough for the ultimate upgrade for Adams from business class to a federal cellblock.

At this point, the people have lost all faith in the Biden Department of Justice – a dangerous situation indeed. When the public does not respect the law, the country devolves into lawlessness.
The case looks pretty weak. NYC hosts dozens of foreign consulates. There is an element of international diplomacy to being NYC mayor. Getting a new consulate building an expedited FDNY approval?…it’s questionable if DOJ even consulted the State Dept. about Turkey’s asking the Mayor for help.
If it’s a campaign donation problem, was Adams made aware of it at the time?
I think the NYPD Commissioner has much bigger legal problems than Mayor Adams. That one looks like a classic extortion racket.
I am a little disappointed with the professor on this one, as he has been one of the best out there in showing the fascism (he won’t use the word) of the Biden Administration and their using lawfare to batter their opponents. On the day Adams cried out that the city was being destroyed and criticized the administration, I said out loud and I heard others say or read what they wrote – he’s in trouble? Why did we say that back then? Because we have seen Garland from the day of his nomination hearing, claiming to be unable to tell that Antifa members, dressed in disguise, trying to burn their way into a federal building were terrorists, despite their threats.
Maybe it’s true, maybe not. I don’t care much. It is hardly like he robbed the Turks. Something much more sinister is going on. Adams himself said this is payback. Is it a coincidence people saw what would happen when he criticized Biden and then it happened? It must be a coincidence then with Henry Cuellar, the Democrat congressman from Texas who criticized Biden on immigration, is indicted too. And let’s not mention the weaponization of the federal govt and NYC DA and NYS AG against Trump.
When Biden came into office he immediately made it easy for illegal aliens to come to our country. He even flew in hundreds of thousands. Thousands of them are criminals, even murderers and child abusers. There are perhaps ten million total, some of them gangs, some of them taking over parts of cities, even crowding small towns. They will have children who will be American citizens under current law. The homelessness and migrant tent cities are exploding in our country. There is an obvious attempt to allow them to vote by the Ds, who blatantly fight every attempt to make voting fair and fraud proof.
I don’t know if Adams did something criminal. In a normal world, he should be investigated and prosecuted for what he did, at least if it looks probable. I’m not an Adams supporter. He is doing a terrible job (though not as bad as his predecessor). But whatever he did, it does not sound as anywhere as near as dangerous and destructive to our country as what Biden is doing on many fronts. Remember Jefferson wrote – ““Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever.” If there is a God, yes it can. We have to speak up about what the evil members of our country are doing. You can argue Biden is trying to destroy our country or he is asleep while those in his administration do so. Either way, he should have never been president, never been allowed to continue. The Rs failed to impeach him, frankly, out of cowardice. If we can’t depend on them, what can we depend on?
But we depend on great writers and lawyers like Jonathan Turley too and I expect more from him. Call these people “fascists.” Point out relentlessly what they are doing. Frankly, he usually does. I don’t know why he didn’t this time.

I saw President Trump this evening meeting with Zelinsky at Trump towers, and President Trump was amazing.

For that, Democrats and their media allies did EVERYTHING they could to destroy him. They impeached him twice; tried to bankrupt him with lawfare; and imprison him. After that failed, he’s been targeted for assassination. Twice. Yet he still wants to fight for America and Americans.

Hurricane Helene hit Perry, FL as a Category 4 today. IIRC frequent commenter / attorney on this blog, lin, stated she had bought property near my in-laws home, Steinhatchee, FL. My mother-in-law told us a few minutes ago that she has no electricity but otherwise no flooding or wind damage. Steinhatchee, however, was flattened, especially my favorite seafood restaurant, Roy’s Restaurant.
Thinking of the people in the path of Hurricane / Tropical Storm Helene, I do hope “lin” and her loved one are safe.

True, but there were quite a few sites North of Florida that are not generally considered to be on the highest risk path for Gulf hurricanes, that received very high winds and devastating volumes of rainfall. Hendersonville, NC got 25 inches of rain over a few hours, Busick, NC got 27. Lake Lure, also in the middle of the state, has a dam that has been inflicted with major, probably terminal, structural damage. It has not yet given way, but everyone downstream has received evacuation instructions. We have relatives near Asheville, and know other people in that vicinity, and our thoughts and best wishes are with all of those folks.
Agree whole, my sympathies to anyone that got the hammer. All day in Waycross area, it’s devastating in some areas. Trees down, crops ruined, no power, mile long lines for gas. Looks like a war zone, my prayers for them all!

The problem with Harris’s remarks is not the meaning of words like Holistic,
It is that she uses interesting words without actually saying anything, and that she does so inauthentically.

Most of us are wise enough that we need not fully agree with a candidate.
But we expect THEM to not merely beleive what they are saying, but to DO what they say they will – or atleast actually try.
I think Harris also suffers because of Obama.
Obama was a great orator, he was well spoken, charming, handsome, and many of his positions as a candidate were appealing.
But as president he was a failure – not a colasal one – that is Biden. But he did not do or even try much of what he promised.
He was elected at the depth of a recession – he has a free ride to a quick strong recovery, and managed to instead have a protracted
weak one. He did NOT close GITMO, he did NOT get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
He did NOT do pretty much anything he said he would.
Clinton ran as Obama’s less polished 3rd term and lost specifically because that is not what the country wanted.
But Harris is running as a knockoff Obama. She is trying to tap his gift for oratory, and maybe before Obama she might succeed.
But we have had the charming gifted orator – who failed to deliver.
Harris has an Obama problem – first she just is NOT Obama no matter how hard she tries.
And 2nd people do not want Obama. The want someone they can trust.
By speaking in flowery language less articulately than Obama and with less clarity and specificity, she is reminding people that they want someone who KNOWS what they are going to do, is willing to publicly commit to it, and that they can beleive will deliver.
And no rhetorical flourish will convey that.
I noted above that Harris fails in comparisons to Obama, but she also has a Biden problem.
Biden ran in 2020 as a uniter, as all things to all people – but also as a moderate democrat.
Voters thought they were voting for someone like Joe Manchin. Biden had been a working class version of that his entire political carreer.
But what people got from Biden was something different – something far to far left for most of the country.
To have any hope of Winning independents Harris MUST persuade them that she is not another cameleon.
That she stands for something they want, and that she means it.
Apeals to emotion are not going to get her there.
And she has a final problem in that she can NOT actually be specific – if she ACTUALLY tacks to the center – which she must do to get independents – she will lose her left flank. The left wing nut crowd will stay home before they will vote for a centrist.
Conversely if she seeks to reassure them that she will be a continuation of Biden – she will lose moderates.
Harris is doing better than Biden for only one reason – core democrats who were despondent over Biden and were sitting out the election have returned That gets her to 46% in the polls – without staking out any positions with clarity.
But it will not get her over the top.

Unfortunately, Harry Browne was pretty much the high water mark to the LP, both in terms of vote getting, and articulating a unified message.
This reflects a HUGE problem for Democrats and DOJ.
I have read some of the allegations – and MAYBE Adams has a real problem.
But it is just as easy to conclude that he real problem is pissing off Democrats with his remarks on immigration.
The reality is that we do not Trust DOJ or SDNY. We do not know if they are going after Adams because he is corrupt or if it is just more lawfare because he has stepped out of line on immigration policy.
Without the internal communications of the Justice department it is not possible to know.
The problem for DOJ/SDNY is that it is perfectly plausible that this is just lawfare.
Most of the allegations are TINY – they are not in the same league as the conduct of the Biden’s or Clintons or Menendez, or even Pelosi.
So what if the Turks bumped his plane tickets to Business class.
That is not a good image for Adam’s, but it is not stealing an election or gold bars under your bed, or cash in the freezer or running fees through multiple shell companies.

The singular American failure is the judicial branch, with emphasis on the Supreme Court.
Americans are compelled to watch corruption carried out with impunity on a daily basis.
The purveyors of corruption in the judicial branch are free to squander financial resources and destroy lives before their obscene product is overturned by facts and truth, again with impunity.
Merrick Garland, his DOJ, and lower courts, Alvin Bragg, Letitia James, Fani Willis, Jack Smith, Judges Chutkan, Merchan, McAfee, Kaplan et al., are running rampant with political intent and corruption while the Supreme Court sits idly by, implementing no corrective action.
The Supreme Court with “the judicial power of the United States,” superior to “inferior Courts,” must become “pro active,” engage in “judicial overreach,” and impose justice, and Congress must enhance and accelerate the impeachment and conviction process, or the Constitution must be given new teeth through a “Corruption Amendment.”
Abuse in the judicial branch is untenable.
