Yale Psychiatrist: Harris Voters May Need to Cut Off Friends and Family Members

With women pledging to break up with their boyfriends and divorce their husbands over the Trump victory, Yale University chief psychiatry resident Dr. Amanda Calhoun is advising that it may also be necessary for your mental health to cut off your family and friends who supported Trump. In that way, you can avoid being “triggered” by opposing political views — much like Yale itself.

As academics, we are dealing with the election on campuses across America. After the election, I had some valuable discussions with students who supported Harris and some who supported Trump. I wish there would be more interaction between the two groups. That is why this story stood out for me. I do not believe that further separation or isolation will help this country or these individuals.

Dr. Calhoun went on MSNBC’s Joy Reid to offer the curious take on good mental health. Reid has spent the week condemning the majority of voters (particularly minority voters) in the nation as racists and misogynists for the Trump victory.

Reid joined a rising tide of rage, which I discussed in my column this weekend. Dr. Calhoun added her voice to the madness.

“So, if you are going into a situation where you have family members, where you have close friends who you know have voted in ways that are against you… it’s completely fine to not be around those people and to tell them why…

…You know, to say, ‘I have a problem with the way that you voted because it went against my very livelihood, and I’m not going to be around you this holiday. I need to take some space for me.’ I think you should very much be entitled to do so, and I think it may be essential for your mental health.”

There is another possibility. You can try to resolve those feelings with people who you previously liked or loved. It may actually help to discuss these issues outside of the echo chamber of your political associations.

Of course, Yale University itself has followed this advice for years by removing faculty with opposing views for the general welfare of the community. Surveys show that 77% of Yale faculty “are registered as Democrats or have conducted political activity that heavily or exclusively supports Democrats; under 3% are Republican.” Furthermore, among 16 surveyed departments, “over 57%, have no registered Republicans at all. Across 14 departments in the Social Sciences and Humanities, the report identified 312 Democrat faculty (88%) and only 4 Republicans (1.1%), a ratio of around 78 to 1.”

Now, that is mental tranquility.

The suggestion that it may be “triggering” to see family and friends is not unique to Yale’s psychiatric staff.

Across the country, women have been cutting their hair and joining the Korean 4B movement—bihon (no marriage), bichulsan (no childbirth), biyeonae (no dating), and bisekseu (no sex). One is quoted as saying, “I fear The Handmaid’s Tale will become our reality.”

It is a curious response since figures like Reid blame white women for the loss. Trump won white women voters by eight points at 53 percent. Harris actually fell slightly in the support of women overall. Conversely, roughly 43 percent of men voted for Harris. Forty percent of women under 30 voted for Trump.

Yet I watched one deranged voter say that she is thinking of buying a “Glock” and shooting the first man who comes near her. If so, she would have an over 4 out of 10 likelihood of shooting a fellow Harris supporter.

None of this is good for our nation’s mental health and suggesting that people retreat further into their silos does not make for particularly healthy advice.

As discussed in my book, The Indispensable Right, we have become a nation of rage addicts. Taking another hit of rage will do little to break that addiction.

Jonathan Turley is the Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at George Washington University. He is the author of “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage” (Simon & Schuster, 2024).

  1. It seems there are several very good responses to this topic (too many to enumerate). One in particular is Michael Weiser’s

Whatever happened to the “Art of Compromise?” Our (and I do mean ‘Our’) Republic is based, and depends on ‘Compromise.’

Just how does one compromise with someone self-isolated in a Silo? In many ways the Israel/Palestine is similar: How do you ‘Compromise’ with another actor whose declared objective is dedicated to your demise? Ultimatelyn an ‘All or Nothing’ position. The Leftists, who have hijacked the Democrat Party, seem to have adopted a similar approach.

    1. A very simple response:
You do not compromise with evil, you eradicate evil.
You do not compromise with a cancer, you find the cancer and destroy it by employing all means necessary and available.
The root cause of this societal cancer should be isolated, exposed to sunlight, fully exposed in open forum for what it truly is and treated in agreement to the law for the treason it is.

    2. Wrong. Left is the new right. ‘Mental health’ is a property of the authoritarian deep state. IDpol has inverted the universe.

  2. Joy Reid
Ha ha ha ha ha ha! What a freaking racist joke of a black colored person. If I were a black person, I would vote to throw her out of the black person club.

  3. Those boyfriends and family members are lucky to have these women with personality disorders dissociate from them. They are very toxic.

  4. Just as we hope to begin healing our divisiveness MSNBC’s Joy “less” Reid found herself a psychiatrist of sorts who advocates for making the divide even worse by dissolving our family units. Yale University chief psychiatry resident Dr. Amanda Calhoun had this to offer:

“So, if you are going into a situation where you have family members, where you have close friends who you know have voted in ways that are against you… it’s completely fine to not be around those people and to tell them why…

…You know, to say, ‘I have a problem with the way that you voted because it went against my very livelihood, and I’m not going to be around you this holiday. I need to take some space for me.’ I think you should very much be entitled to do so, and I think it may be essential for your mental health.”

This attempt to sever the family unit is nothing new for Marxists. They have longed for its demise for nearly two centuries now. It was in the Communist Manifesto that Marx and Engels viewed families as agencies of capitalism and the individualism required to nourish it. As such, they held that families are to be abolished in order to lay the foundation for communism and the collectivism required to foster it.

While communism has historically failed repeatedly and yet to move beyond a self-serving absolute dictatorship, there remain Marxists intent upon pursuing the emptiness.

  5. It’s always a good sign when a so-called Doctorate of Mental Health recommends seceding from the bonds of your own family members. Not unlike your Cardiologist recommending you don’t exercise because the gym might have someone there that didn’t vote like you did.

And people wonder why there is such a mental health problem in the country?

    1. ‘Mental health’ is a property of the deep state. You are crazy if you fail to embrace authoritarianism.

  6. “break up with their boyfriends and divorce their husbands” — for the cause

“cut off your family and friends” — for the cause

“cutting their hair, no marriage, no childbirth, no dating, no sex” — for the cause

Remind me, again, which political party needs “deprogramming.”

Whether the “cause” is religious, criminal, political — that is textbook cult psychology, aka “identity change.”

    1. –in other words, reactive responses to proactive failures (ID politics, trans, abortion, open border issues, etc.)

  7. Ponder this: If Nikki Haley were the candidate rather than Donald Trump, the whupping of Kamala would have been even greater than we saw last Tuesday. What would have been the liberal media’s excuse then?

    1. “If Nikki Haley were the candidate rather than Donald Trump, the whupping of Kamala would have been even greater than we saw last Tuesday”

Care to try to support that premise?

      1. Sure. The election results, in my opinion, more likely reflect the electorate’s desire to halt the march of progressivism, secure our national borders, halt the profligate federal spending, and restore sanity to US energy and foreign policy. It was less a vote for Donald Trump than it was a vote against Kamala Harris. Nikki Haley, more likely than not, would have receive most or all of Trump’s votes and likely would have picked up many Harris voters who could not stomach voting for Trump. Especially those voters who choose their candidate based upon the candidate’s race and/or sex.

        1. “Nikki Haley, more likely than not, would have receive most or all of Trump’s votes and likely would have picked up many Harris voters who could not stomach voting for Trump.”

Not counting the Republicans and devoted MAGA voters who would have just decided to stay home because they decided Nikki Haley was just more swamp. Not counting the Democrats that despise Haley almost as much as they despise Trump.

Not counting the Democrats who wouldn’t choose a Republican East Indian female like Haley over a Democrat mixed race East Indian/Jamaican female like Harris.

And of course, the DNC and media would NEVER attack Haley as they did Trump. Because… she’s a woman… or “person of color’… or something like that.

Not the greatest reasoning at work here. And the fact that Trump hasn’t cleaned up his political personality and it still turns of a percentage of voters doesn’t make it a rational conclusion.

        2. If Nikki Haley had been the ‘Republican’ presidential candidate, 90% of Trump voters (like me) would have stayed home on election day. We voted for Trump, not the RINO/Neocon wing of the Republican Party.

          1. Not voting in a Haley v Harris match-up would have effectively been a vote for Harris. Sometimes in elections, as it is sometimes in life, we are faced with deciding on the best of what may be two bad choices. Deciding to not make a choice is itself a choice and says much about the person faced with the choosing.

  8. As a physician myself, I would still recommend that politics and religion be off the table for discussion during the holidays. The time we spend together during the holiday season is limited, and for some very rare. It is a time for humbling ourselves by giving thanks for all God has done for us — not only in providing for us (Thanksgiving) but also the gift He gave us in His Son (Christmas). It is difficult to find common ground — even among our relatives — during the holiday season. To be blessed and to be a blessing to others we should seek to leave contentious subjects alone.

I therefore agree with the psychiatrist, but for wholly different reasons.

    1. Jajuan62: Agree in sentiment with your nice reflection. But Doc, gimme the cure. You left out “Humor-The Best Medicine” (Reader’s Digest?)
Think of Chevy Chase’s family in “Christmas Vacation”

  9. Speaking of cutting family and friends, it looks as if received opinion is edging toward the Bidens voting for Trump.

They look almost as happy as I am that Trump won.

Maybe they chose ‘literally Hitler’ over Harris as the better and more likeable candidate.

  10. Dr. Calhoun has nested into a “family” of like-minded Yale colleagues. And she’s obviously well-married into the Media family.
As Thanksgiving nears, they will dine together heavily on anti-Trump plans and strategies.

Around the Thanksgiving table, they will discuss, “He inherited a great economy.” [Deleted is the part that 90% of Biden’s improving economy is merely RECOVERY and RESTORATION from the Covid crisis.]
They lament that Elon Musk forked over $100M to Republicans and Trump. [Deleted is the part that lesser-billionaires Mike Bloomberg and Bill Gates threw in $50M each Kamala Harris, to neutralize Musk’s $100M, -so it’s a wash, isn’t it.]
They will cluck about Trump’s criminal convictions, his lies, and election interference back in 2020. [Deleted is the part about Kamala’s campaign slogan of “Turn the Page.” –Also deleted is the fact that reciprocally, most Republicans are NOT bringing up Biden’s and Harris’ years’-old Hx of plagiarism, lies, family crimes, marital infidelities, quid pro quos, money transfers among family members, etc. that a reluctant DOJ sat on. Republicans, not Democrats, have turned the page.
They will openly complain about the “MAGA Media.” [Deleted is the brotherhood of MSM giants (reminiscent of the 70s’ “seven sisters” oil family) that sought to destroy Trump after their girl Hillary went down. You know, instead of congratulations, the immediate NYT headline was, “America Makes a Perilous Choice.” The grim looks on the faces of partisan NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, ABC’s Martha Raddatz, Scripps News, NPR, etc. are memorable. No “Joy” here, folks.
They will continue to talk about Trump’s “dark rhetoric” [Deleted are Harris’s “incompetent, unqualified, undeserving, fascist, criminal,” line of insults. Also, it’s OK for Kamala to talk about the “Fight” and to keep fighting–But that’s a no no word for Trump.

  11. When half the population has been brainwashed by Putin and his disinformation campaign to divide the United States, what is there to really say? Nothing will bridge the gap, and they actively voted against themselves and others. There isn’t a solution until they can be deprogrammed.

    1. That rascal Putin again. Sooner or later, you guys will finally find those missing strawberries.

  12. In other words, ideological segregation. These people validate IQ studies: “Wicherts, Dolan, and van der Maas (2009) contend that the average IQ of sub-Saharan Africans is about 80. A critical evaluation of the studies presented by WDM shows that many of these are based on unrepresentative elite samples. We show that studies of 29 acceptably representative samples on tests other than the Progressive Matrices give a sub-Saharan Africa IQ of 69; studies of the most satisfactory representative samples on the Standard Progressive Matrices give an IQ of 66; studies of 23 acceptably representative samples on the Colored Progressive Matrices give an IQ of 71. The international studies of mathematics, science, and reading give a sub-Saharan African IQ of 66. The four data sets can be averaged to give an IQ of 68 as the best reading of the IQ in sub-Saharan Africa.”

  13. I would urge Republican strategists and Democratic base to view Axlerod and Heilemann podcast where the breakdown the demographics of the voters and repeatedly call their own WOKE constituencies horse sh!t. I don’t disagree but just listen to these bloviating a$$hats on how they see Trump and American voters. A quote, the wine and cheese vote versus the meat and potatoes unhealthy voters (Trump voters). Complete A$$hatz less Carville the Chimp.

    1. Traveler: For me, the wine and cheese voters represent the nouveau-riche Democrat insiders who have $$$$ in their eyes to gain control and feed what they deem as the government-sustained, lower-incomed, less-educated, dependent meat and potatoes guys. Their government salaries would likely double what their Yale/Harvard degrees in social justice are worth in a real world.

p.s. This is what Joe Manchin had to say about the neglect of the middle class in favor of the “takers:”

  14. I have read Dr. Turley’s book and I am in full agreement that the insolent behavior demonstrated by those who didn’t get their way only furthers the division. Civil behavior, education and having the strength to face your adversaries is the only way to reach the interface between this great divided country. Has anyone considered that this equal divide may in fact be good for us. It gives us real life experience in realizing that the way to reach the interface is to expect and tolerate a little discomfort and to work through it. This division into silos is primarily the work of those who can not tolerate a little discomfort. They don’t have the strength to go to trial and see where the differences reside and then offer a civil and rational solution that is considerate of both sides. To hide is an act of weakness. To shun is an act of weakness. If you wish to know how potent your theories and arguments are, go preach it to your enemies. Get out there on the field and take a hit. Then you realize that in the real world , people hit back. If you can not take that you are condemned to a silo. That’s not the objectivity and compromise the founders contemplated. Snubbing people is the solution of the insolent and the offensive. It is not the result of vigorous interaction which trials demand. Does anyone really think that whining and engaging in insulting behavior is going to result in acceptable results? Don’t call someone names and retreat from the situation. That’s not the strength that civility demands.

    1. Michael Weiser—So: the issue is that Harris supporters “didn’t get their way “? NO! The issue is that MAGA media pumped out daily doses of lies, misogyny and racism that so many people fell for. Despite the fact that Biden was handed a mess of epic proportions, he turned it around and delivered the best economy in the world.

Did you forget what Trump left behind? Most of the country was shut down— schools, restaurants, and businesses closed, new daily records of COVID deaths and infections. Lines at food banks, hospitals hiring refrigerated trucks to hold corpses and rampant unemployment. There were shortages of computer chips and consumer goods —all due to Trump’s incompetence and his stupid tariffs.

Did you forget what Trump inherited from Obama? A booming economy that he proceeded to destroy.

When Biden turned all of that carnage around and got America back to work and school, there were shortages of consumer goods and increased demand. People delayed purchasing goods like refrigerators and other home appliances. It takes time to ramp up production especially when there are shortages of computer chips and consumer goods. So when demand is high and supply is low, prices go up.

MAGA media harped that higher prices means our country is headed for a recession and downplayed the positive economic news. That’s why so many polls showed that most Americans disapproved of Biden’s handling of the economy and believed the our country was headed in the wrong direction— which isn’t true. Inflation is coming down, unemployment is at an historic low and wages and real wealth are rising. Our economy will continue to grow and Trump will lie and claim credit, just like he did for Obama’s economy.

Trump and MAGA media constantly harped that higher prices for food and housing proved that America was failing. They also lied about migrants raping women, committing murder and overrunning small towns, stealing and eating pets. Trump and MAGA media pumped out the message that Democrats are “the enemy within “ and lied about migrants voting illegally. These lies along with the horrible things Trump said about Harris — which I will not repeat because they are so vile—explain the “victory “.

How did Harris conduct herself? She laid out her plans to benefit the middle class by making the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, to increase affordable housing and assistance for first time homebuyers and parents and protection for reproductive rights.

Yes, Harris supporters are upset— upset that the lies, racism and misogyny were believed by so many people. Trump actually claimed that if people voted for him that their personal wealth would soar and that the prices of food and housing would fall precipitously. He had no plan to deliver these things and economists say that his tariffs will tank our economy. His tax cuts for the wealthy will drive up the national debt and his plans for Social Security will cause the Fund to go bankrupt in 6 years time. Republicans have pushed for cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for years—now it’s likely to happen. People like Musk will see their personal wealth soar—it’s already happening. In fact, Musk has already purchased a defacto vice presidency— he is included in calls with world leaders.

Trump’s campaign was based on lies, racism, misogyny and bluster and braggadocio that so many people fell for— like the lie that “Mexico will pay to build the wall.” Trump is all about self aggrandizing and power and there’s no lie he would not tell to get his way. The election was not about genuine policy differences—it was about getting power no matter what it takes, including lies, misogyny and racism— and that’s un-American and that’s why Harris supporters are upset. It’s one thing to lose because of intellectually honest policy differences but quite another to lose because of lies, misogyny and racism.

Notice the difference between how Harris and Biden have reacted to the election results—even though Trump’s “victory “ was the product of lies, outrageous and vicious personal attacks and racism and misogyny— and Trump’s loss in 2020. Biden and Harris are patriots. Trump is a malignant narcissist. Trump still will not concede the 2020 election.

      1. GiGi
You’re so FOS it’s sickening. Perhaps BLACK COW should hire you for a never ending renewal source of BullSheeeeit!
        PRESIDENT TRUMP
Say it GiGi, say it for the next four years and then President JD Vance for 8 after.

        1. Traveler— just like MAGA media and Trump, you can’t address issues or facts without name-calling and personal attacks. Everything I wrote is based on proven facts.

          1. I don’t address your stupid crap because it doesn’t deserve the validation that a response would provide. It is apparent to any educated person that is knowledgeable of our political situation that it is BULLShEeit.

            President Trump 2024!

          2. Gigi. You have to understand that MAGA cult members like Traveler are trapped in a social environment where the only acceptable emotional response is anger.

Traveler is one of the angriest members of his cult.
They have no other emotional responses.
Even when they win they continue to rage with angry insults
            Anger is all they know.

      2. The issue is that MAGA media pumped out daily doses of lies, misogyny and racism that so many people fell for.

Gigi, when will you, Jimmy Kimmel, Steven Colbert, et al acknowledge that you fell for and still spout the Soviet Democrat-Marxist Mainstream Media Propaganda Complex daily doses of lies?
        – The Trump Russia Dossier is verified intelligence agency proof that Trump is Putin’s stooge!
        – 51 Intelligence experts say the Biden Bribery Laptop is just Putin election campaign disinformation!
        – Trump will ban abortions if he’s elected!
        – Trump is Hitler! (which is why the Obamas congratulated him as did President Daddy-Daughter Inappropriate Incest Showers)
        – Trump said Nazis are very fine people at Charlottesville – Obama verified that as fact a few days before the election!

You’re attempting yet again to claim that women, blacks, Latinos, etc whose support for Trump rose in this election are simply too mentally incompetent to make their own decisions on what they were told about both the Trump and Harris campaigns, and then make their own informed choices.

As you and Marx have pointed out, voters who should have voted for Harris voted for Trump instead because they were victims of their “deluded self consciousness”. Straight out of The Communist Manifesto that you have right there beside your bed to read between turning tricks.

Your rage and projecting your cognitive dissonance on Trump can only help to position the GOP to succeed with their policy directions and the midterm elections. Keep doing it!

BTW Gigi, where did those 10 million votes that Biden got during the 2020 election ,supposedly handicapped by Wuhan Flu, suddenly disappear to in the following presidential election?

Gigi, the schadenfreude of watching you continue as the failed Soviet Democrat Fire Ho of Lies is absolutely delicious.

      3. Gigenius

What became of Trump’s “stupid tariffs”?

Everything else you said was equally nonsensical.

      4. If all of these problems existed, then why did Biden run for office if he wasn’t up to the task? No one forced him to do it. He was widely viewed as a hack as a senator and even Obama thought he was an idiot as VP.

  15. Of course Joy Reid blames White Women. Joy believes that white people are the root of all things racist and evil in the world which I’m sure justifies her $8 million dollar salary at MSNBC. She would fit in perfectly in the Yale Echo Chamber. In the mean time, I would start investing heavily in Silos Jonathan.

    1. Diogenes……and they hate Trump for separating families of illegals at the border, remember? Surely they don’t have one set of rules for Democrats and another set for us Trashfolk? : )

      1. Excellent point, Cindy! 🙂

I would add that without family, all they have are their cats, but there’s a big hitch. Cats are archconservatives! Being a life-long cat lover, I can attest that cats HATE change. They also hate closed doors. They expect complete freedom, free from all human regulation. And when you let them out, the first thing they do is go around the neighborhood doing a beat down–zero tolerance for undocumented cats!

        1. Diogenes…LOL!! Yes, you won’t see any cats taking a cruise ship to Haiti anytime soon!
          And I agree…they hate change!

          1. “Yes, you won’t see any cats taking a cruise ship to Haiti anytime soon!”

That is what the manager of the Chinese restaurant indicated to me when I brought my dog with me to eat dinner. He emphasized, with a smile, that the Chinese eat dog.

    2. Darn you! I was just about to say that!

      “Shattering family bonds
Total control involves eliminating outside influences, with the cult’s tactics to isolate members becoming a masterclass in manipulation. In thought-reform sessions disguised as caring mentorship, teachers rewrite family relationships — distorting the past to create rifts.

Ripped straight from the NXIVM playbook, one teacher twisted psychological concepts like “individuation” and “family enmeshment” to pry relationships apart — convincing students they needed emotional and physical distance from their families.

The teachers cleverly warned students their families would resist their transformation and newfound autonomy, portraying criticism or concern as hostile attempts to maintain control and impede their growth — echoing the leader’s deep-seated sense of persecution.

These manipulations were so successful that students became resentful and fearful of family members, sometimes cutting off all contact. Meanwhile, the leaders seamlessly cultivated a belief in students that the cult had become their new family.

If that’s not enough, the cult actively isolates members by keeping them busy day and night. Making the Sea Org look lazy, students undertake physical labour, recruitment activities, meetings and endless courses — often compensated for with unpaid admin or teaching work.

        1. Oh, no problem. It’s my fault for sleeping late. Woke up at 2:30AM to feed a couple of kittens, then could not go back to sleep.

  16. I saw this psychiatrists statement on X. For clarity she is a physician already but is a resident working towards Board Certification in Psychiatry and Neurology. She is, without doubt, seeing patients and prescribing medicines. Therefore patients in New Haven should be very careful about who they see.
It is unethical to give such sweeping advice to people without actually seeing and evaluating them personally. All psychiatric care is individual and needs to be tailored specifically to each person. Also politics does not enter the exam room.
Her advice, not even getting to the medical level, fails to even pass the smell test.
Your family, in most instances, is your greatest asset, your greatest comfort and your greatest safe space. If anything, we see far more pathology in people when their family unit fails than when it succeeds.
You are most alone when you have no family.
To break bonds in a family over politics is insane. Your political friends will not go out in the snow and drag your car out when you drink too much and go off the road, or go in and bail you out for the same reason. Or drop everything to cross half the United States to save a sister in law whose adopted son had tried to throw her out of her own home and used his POA to steal her blind. To spend thousands to pay attorneys to save relatives. To take you around town to every Doctor visit after a liver transplant (or even be there when you wake up and realize that you are actually going to live because the transplant was a success).
Your family are most likely the ones that never give up on you, despite all your failures and are the most grief stricken when you fail that last time and all is lost.
They also call up your doctor and tell him/her what you were REALLY doing between doctor visits.
Or a cousin who gets in his truck and drives a 1000 miles just to talk to you because you are about to have a make or break surgery that will either end or save your life.
I’ll take family almost every time, with all their imperfections.
Politics changes with the wind, family sticks with you (sometimes even when you wish they did not )

    1. Just to be clear, she is not a resident.
She completed residency training last year
She is now a Clinical Fellow.

  17. “Dr. Amanda Calhoun is advising that . . .”

With mental “health” advice like that, it’s no wonder that Xanax is so popular.
