In California, Democrats are ringing in the New Year with a new push against voter identification. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has been hammering Huntington Beach because the city recently amended its municipal laws to require basic voter identification. While voters overwhelmingly support voter identification, Democrats in California recently passed a law making it a crime to ask for voter identification at polling places. Now, Bonta is asking for an appellate court to intervene to prevent Huntington Beach from asking for IDs before people vote.
After Huntington Beach passed Measure A requiring voter identification in 2026, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning voter identification requirements. Bonta then sued the city but the California Superior Court ruled it too soon for a lawsuit. California Superior Court Judge Nico Dourbetas wrote that “this matter is not ripe for adjudication, as [the change to] the City’s Charter is permissive and discretionary in character, and thus currently presents no conflict with state elections law.”
Bonta, however, wants a ruling to prevent voter identification before the 2026 elections.
Secretary of State Shirley Weber insisted that California residents are already required to verify their identity when they register to vote, but the city argues that it does not mean that the person voting is that same person.
Democrats have continued to block voter identification laws and policies despite Gallop and other polling showing as much as 80 percent of Americans support voter identification laws across party lines. The Biden Administration was widely criticized for its effort to prevent Virginia from removing the names of people who previously stated that they were not U.S. citizens.
Thirty-six states have laws requesting or requiring voters to show some form of identification at the polls.
While Weber denounced the laws as a form of voter suppression, there is no evidence that such laws have had any such material effect. Indeed, President Biden and Democrats widely denounced voting laws in states like Georgia as “Jim Crow 2.0,” but under these laws, Georgia and other states set records in the turnout of voters.
Bonta’s actions show that Democrats will not yield on the effort to prevent voter identification at polling places. Instead, they seem to be doubling down with less than a third of Americans supporting the effort.
So much for political resolutions to realign the party after the election losses in November.

The rallying cry “voter ID” is vague as to its meaning. If a state requires a secure form of ID when registering to vote, is that voter ID? If at the polling place, they pull up a photo taken when you registered to vote, is that voter ID? If they match your signature to the one recorded electronically when you registered to vote?
I say it is. Not only that, it’s a stronger system against impostering than a simple-minded (ideological) one where you have to show a drivers license at the polling place.
You can tell when a debate has ceased to be open-minded…..when facts no longer matter, and vaguely defined words and symbols take over.
Precluding impostering and ineligible voting is a meaningful thing to argue for. There are better ways to assure this than others. The devil is in the details. Unwillingness to delve into them is going to make it harder to reach any agreement. In fact, it paves the way for “gesture” legislating — easily fooling the lo-info citizen into thinking a problem has been solved, when in fact it hasn’t.
So, it sounds like Huntington Beach has passed such a “gesture” measure….they don’t have a fraud-proof means of determining US Citizenship, but want to pretend they actually do to mollify their conservative voters?

Turley makes one error in his article – while it is true that Voter ID laws have shown no negative effect on turnout – particulatly minority turnout.
It does not actually matter if it did.
Making it harder to vote is both constitutional and acceptable – so long as the difficulty is increased for all.
If this is merely a “gesture” then why is the democratic part so vigorously opposed.

It’s a win-win for this country to REQUIRE proof of citizenship in order to vote as a national standard. Simply put, why would we not? Do we so value the input of people here illegally that we are willing to risk election integrity? There is no other first world country that does not strongly protect their boundaries AND restrict the rights of their visitor/non-citizens…and this is not an affront, but to be expected. This push back from California is simply absurd.
Proof of national citizenship in order to vote should be implemented in a fraud-proof manner. The question of importance then is how to prove it? We don’t have a fraud-proof national ID system at the ready to consult for citizenship status. Thanks to G W. Bush, we instead got “Real ID”….a state-based system tied to drivers licensing, which doesn’t make any distinction between US Citizen (can vote in federal elections) and PLRs (green card holders who can’t).
What kind of ID system should be utilized when a person is first registering to vote? We simply don’t have one that is fraud-proof for looking up US Citizenship status. Let’s face up to this challenge, and stop pretending it’ll be enough to make someone whip out their driver’s license at the polling place. Even if it’s Real ID, it doesn’t prove citizenship.
This is what happens when an issue becomes “us vs. them”. The most important details get left behind, and people become blinded by meaningless symbols and slogans. That is what “voter ID’ has become.
The REAL ID act DOES require providing documentation that one is a citizen, or documentation that one is a legal foreign resident.
That means that the STATE KNOWS for each ID issue whether the ID is for a citizen of a legal foreign residence.
The ID must be electronically readable, which means that a REAL ID compliant ID scanned at a polling place CAN be used to confirm citizenship if the state chooses.
At a certain point, California should be removed from the rest of the United States. Border checkpoints, border guards armed with automatic weapons like they have in most of Europe, will be erected at key entry points.
And you’ll need a passport or Visa to enter the democratic republic of California. Among the immediate changes will be the removal of over 50 members of the House of Representatives, and the removal of 2 Senators.

California does not require anyone verify their identity when they vote. You just check a box that you’re a resident and allowed to vote.
If you don’t provide your driver’s license number when you register online, then you can provide proof of residency, like a utility bill. It does not require proof of citizenship, like a birth certificate.
So you can register to vote with nothing but a phone bill. Or you can register to vote while getting a drivers license, and non citizens can get a drivers license.
The same Democrat Party that claims voter ID laws are racist, require photo ID to attend a Democrat primary or convention.
Photo ID is required to be fully participating resident of California, and the US. You need a photo ID to board a plane, open a bank account, cash a check, at a Welfare office, to buy certain kinds of cough medicine, to drive a car, to get a document notarized, and to enter a court house.
There are programs that help the poor get a photo ID.
There is only one reason to make it a crime to request photo proof of identity, and that’s to cheat.
The only legitimate question that needs to be answered is what should voters be required to provide to register to vote:

– Valid government-issued photo ID
– 18+ years of age
– Address of residency

Jonathan: In 2020 DJT blamed “massive voter fraud” for his loss to Joe Biden. He couldn’t prove that claim in over 60 lawsuits. So DJT supporters in state legislatures spent the next four years passing voter ID laws. This year DJT’s lawyers filed hundreds of lawsuits challenging mail-in voting–all in an attempt to suppress the vote of Black, Latino and other marginalized communities who tend to vote Democratic. It was a replay of the Jim Crow era, when southern states used literacy tests, poll taxes, intimidation and violence to prevent Black Americans from voting.
The supposed purpose of voter ID laws is to prevent in person voter impersonation. That kind of voter fraud is almost nonexistent. The Brennan Center studies show the rate of in person voter fraud is only 0.0004 % of all ballots cast. Other forms of voter fraud are also rare. Out of 250 million votes cast by mail between 2000 and 2020 there were only 193 criminal convictions. So voter fraud does occur but it is rare.
But the MAGA supporters of DJT are still at it–this time in California. Huntington Beach, a conservative conclave where I often went surfing in my youth, is run by a MAGA city council. It put three measures on the March ballot. Measure A called for voter IDs. Another called for the banning of Gay Pride flags on municipal property. The third measure would give Mayor unilateral power to cancel city council meetings. The first two passed. The third measure failed. Huntington Beach’s voter ID law is a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. It is the out liar in the state and is fighting an uphill legal battle because of California’s new law banning voter IDs at all polling places.
Now I know something about voting in California. I first registered to vote there in 1960–just in time to vote for John Kennedy. I have voted in every general election since then. Prior to 2020 I would go to my polling place near my home. The election worker would ask my name and address, check it against the list of registered voters and I would sign next to my name, and I was handed a ballot. No voter ID required. Everything went smoothly–every time.
In 2020 everything changed with the Covid-19 pandemic. All registered voters received a mail-in ballot instead of having to go to a polling place. In 2021 mail-in voting was made permanent. This year my wife and I received our ballots by mail, filled them out, sign them and mailed them back. We were even given a tracking number to make sure our ballots were received and counted. Of course, voters can still choose in-person voting.
In my experience voter ID laws don’t ensure election integrity. They are simply obstacles to voting. Of course, that’s why you and the rest of DJT’s supporters want them!

Just curious. How is simply showing one’s picture I.D. such as a driver’s license, or government issued I.D. card, an obstacle to voting? My State has a voter I.D. requirement. We go to the voting poll, show out picture I.D., they look at it, we sign the ledger, they verify the signature against ones D.L. or I.D. Card, pickup a ballot, go over to a booth and vote. Print out our completed ballot, take it the scanner, deposit the ballot and we’re done. No one here has a problem with it, and I’ve never heard a single complaint. I’ve never heard anyone complaining about I.D.s being an obstacle to voting🤷♀️

The majority of States have had Voter ID laws for DECADES.

In My state laws requiring voter ID predate Obama – yet STILL voter ID is not checked when you vote or when you register.
Why – Because the left has spent decades challenging the law in courts. The courts typically, prevent the law from being implimented during the current election,
and then dismiss the challenge as moot after the election – only to repeat the process in the next election.
No republicans have NOT been fighting for Voter ID laws since 2020.
They have GOTTEN voter ID laws in most states long before 2020.
They have been FIGHTING to get those in the Sec State office to actually follow the law.
Since 2020 Republicans have been SOMEWHAT successful in court – not getting courts to impose new law, but in about 40% of cases getting the courts to DOLLOW the law that has been in place for DECADES.
But the really big deal in 2024 was that the RNC recruited and deployed almost entirely to currupt democrat cities in swing states 260,000 election observers, and 9,000 lawyers.
The oportunity to cheat without getting caught in 2024 no longer existed.
And what did we see as a result – a drop in democrat voting of approx 8M votes.
Had Harris received the same number of Ballots as Biden did – she would have won in 2024.
Trump’s total votes where SLIGHTLY greater than in 2020. While Democrat Ballots were down nearly 10M.

There are really only three possibilities.
Harris (and even Biden prior to the coup) where so incredibly unpopular that about 10M people who voter democrat in 2020 did not vote in 2024.
There was approximately 10M fraudulant ballots cast in 2020 that could not be repeated in 2024 – because this election was conducted with more sunlight than 2020 so the fraud was not possible.
Or finally and most likely a combination of the above.

The election laws we have today are the consequences fo problems like fraud that we have had in the past.
Do I think there is massive election Fraud in California ? No. There is likely very little election fraud in any state where one party get atleast 5% more votes that the other.
Fraud does not occur except in close elections, because large scale fraud is nearly impossible to hide.
But if you want elections that can be trusted – you need to conduct them as if Fraud is a real possibility.
Because even though significant fraud is just not going to happen in most places most of the time.
Eventually there will be an election that is close enough.
You claim to be from California. There are about half a dozen house races in CA that are won by less than 1% of the vote. Interestingly Democrats ALWAYS win those elections.
Even when the Republican is winning by several percent on election day.
Possibly 100 house seats nationwide are within 1% of the vote. Again democrats win the lions share of 1% elections. The likelyhood of that occuring without fraud is actually quite small.
Is there large scale presidential election fraud in CA ? Highly unlikely.
Is there large scale fraud in CA senate races ? Unlikely.
Is there sufficient fraud to flipp House elections in a few close races in CA – almost certainly.

In the CA recally election several years back – while Newsom avoided recally by a margin larger than likely fraud, there was significant indications of fraud.
The Recall election was expected to be close, and probably only the oddball claims that Larry Elder the candidate that would have been goverenor had Newsome been recalled was somehow a black nazi are what tipped the race. Regardless tens of thousands of people showed up at the polls in CA for that election and were told they had already voted by mail.
There are only 3 ways that can happen:
CA’s ability to trace ballots is schiff.
There was fraud casting ballots for people who had not voted by mail and were not expected to vote in person.
People who had already voted by mail showed up at the polls attempting to vote twice and lied about it.

Ballots can easily have the print patches. Peel off ink portion, press thumb, reseal. Not rocket science. Election day should be a day. Holiday to vote. Polling places by neighborhoods in halls and churches, synagogue or temple. Armor car pick up to count. All ballots saved for 2 years or more. In person unless military, registered handicapped and counted if too close to call even in local city elections.

I do not think that Shamsud was an ISIS Jihadi, as much as he was a person using the ISIS Jihad framework as a means of dealing with his frustrations in life.
There was a video of him up pretty quickly, where he was discussing his property management business. As soon as I saw it, I thought either he had gone thru a divorce, or he was in financial trouble – and that was the trigger for his rampage. Sure enough:
“In a 2015 interview with the Georgia State student newspaper, Jabbar said adjusting to life outside of the military isn’t easy.
“You may have a lot of skills and training from the Army,” Jabbar said. “But you may not be able to speak the language to really translate it and be understood when you apply for a civilian job.”
Jabbar had three ex-wives and three children, two girls and a boy.
He married his first wife in 2008 in Jefferson County. They had two daughters who are now 20 and 15. We don’t know exactly when they divorced but records show the ex-wife filed for child support in 2012.
Jabbar’s second marriage was in 2013. They had no children and divorced in 2016 in Dekalb County, Georgia.
Jabbar married his third wife in 2017 in Fort Bend County and they had a son. According to divorce court records, a judge granted a temporary restraining order at her request.
In 2022, she accused Jabbar of excessive cash withdrawals, gifts to paramours and unreasonable spending.
Investigators said Jabbar made reference to his divorce in videos and said he planned to gather his family for a “celebration” before killing them but changed his mind and decided to join ISIS instead.
Divorce records show that in January 2022, Shamsud-Din Jabbar was $27,000 behind on house payments.
“I have exhausted all means of bringing the loan current other than a loan modification, leaving us no alternative but to sell the house or allow it to go into foreclosure,” he wrote in an email to his ex-wife’s attorney.
He was later evicted from an apartment in Cypress.
Jabbar’s businesses were struggling, too. One, Blue Meadow Properties LLC, lost about $28,000 over the previous year. Two others he started, Jabbar Real Estate Holdings LLC and BDQ L3C, weren’t worth anything.”

I do not know how much of this pressure he brought on himself, but I do know that when people are under financial stress, they will do a lot of things that they shouldn’t do- things of a criminal nature. Fraud, theft, and even murder.
Currently, most Americans are under a terrible financial strain and an emotional strain. And a psychic strain. The relations between men and women have become politicized, and the family structure is under full blown assault. About as many children are being born out-of-wedlock as in wedlock. Divorce is rampant. More and more men are saying to hell with the whole damn dating scene and commitment scene. We all of us have to watch as our country is invaded by illegal aliens, who are making things worse for the average American, and driving down wages, and taking jobs. We have teachers and government workers in some states actively trying to trans the children. Every day, prices creep up. Each American has about $115,000 of Federal debt operating in the background of their life, with no end in sight, and more debt on the way. More and more people are opting to sleep in their cars, and many people with homes, are kind of stuck with them. Families need three bedroom or more homes, but single people? Not so much. Crime and drugs are everywhere, and when the average person looks around for things that are steady, reliable and sane – they encounter crap like the Democrats and the no Voter ID thing. How confidence inspiring!

I look for the fabric of society to continue to fray. There are some answers to the debt problems, but there are no answers to the societal problems that, frankly, a democracy can not fix. Much of this rot has been brought about by Democrats, and they are not going to change. I see more violence, more murders, more people just losing it and going apesh!t. Like Shamsud.
Sounds like Jabbar would have been better off never marrying and with a vasectomy. The 3 fatherless children can enjoy their inheritance.
