And I Have a Bridge in Brooklyn to Sell You: Schumer Suggests that the Administration Caused the Mexican Ship Collision

It has long been a practice for New York sharpies to scam chumps by offering to sell them the Brooklyn Bridge. However,  Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) tried an even harder scam in selling the idea on Sunday that the collision of the Mexican training ship Cuauhtémoc and the Brooklyn Bridge was the fault of the Trump Administration. Schumer appears to have missed the boat, literally, given the immediate reports of a loss of navigation ability on the vessel. In any case, the suggestion that cuts in staffing led to the crash is just the latest Democratic spin that dispenses with any factual foundation.

Democratic members have been actively spreading unfounded claims from the start of the Administration that tragedies were caused by reductions in staff or programs. That included blaming the Administration for a crash that occurred less than 24 hours after the new FAA commissioner took office as well as a crash in Canada due to bad weather. It simply does not matter if the claims are factually absurd. Democrats are rarely accused of disinformation and rely on a generally enabling legacy media.

The same pattern emerged after the blackout at Newark in a system that was flagged as antiquated during the Biden Administration and should have been replaced years ago. Despite only being in office for just over 100 days, the Democrats blamed the Trump Administration for the system failure.

Schumer pushed some of those earlier false claims. However, his gambit with the Brooklyn Bridge would embarrass the most hardened Brooklyn Bridge-selling grifter.

Unwilling to let any tragedy go to waste, the Democratic minority leader issued a press release declaring

“We know there has been meddling by the Trump administration into USCG staffing, and we need to know how this might have impacted the events of last night — from a command, communication and local coordination level. There are indications that this service [Vehicle Traffic System] may not be fully or adequately functional in light of a hiring freeze. If this were the case, the Brooklyn Bridge accident would be a national harbinger, demanding immediate attention.”

However, there is no such connection or allegation in the accident that killed two sailors and injured 17 others.

The Coast Guard was obviously not amused. It issued its own press release Sunday that said that it immediately responded to the scene of the deadly collision:

“Sector New York immediately launched a crew from Coast Guard Station New York to the scene and established a safety zone from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Manhattan Bridge. New York Vessel Traffic Services suspended commercial traffic in the area.”

President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency eliminated its Logistics Information Management System, which managed configuration, maintenance, supply chain and technical data. It was viewed as ineffective and the cut saved over $32 million. It had nothing to do with the accident.

The hair-trigger attacks after these tragedies only deepen the public’s distrust. Polling shows that the public’s confidence in Democrats in Congress is at a record low of 25%.

On the day of Schumer’s comment, a new poll from the Associated Press (AP) and NORC at the University of Chicago found that only 35 percent of Democrats are optimistic about the party’s future.

That makes sense when your Senate minority leader is trying to sell the public a bridge story that treats them like moronic marks who will buy anything.

  1. Any comment on by a democrat is met , by you , with a negative and insulting response

  2. Joe Biden won’t last long

His coffin should be like Pope Francis, simple and reusable. Going green.

  3. Schumer’s mouth totally depends on AOC. Chuck has such fear of being primaried by AOC, he will accuse Trump of everything in the news, even a cloudy day. All AOC has to say is she will not primary him, and he gets back to his usual abnormal normal.
In the meantime, we may ask in the language of Dirty Harry, does AOC feel “lucky” she can win the presidency? (How ambitious is this fair maiden?)

    1. Now, it may very well be true that Schumer is afraid of a primary challenge issued by Alexandria of the Occasional Cortex, but he was lying about Trump before she was ever elected. Let’s not blame the lady for everything – heaven knows there’s legitimate fodder enough.

Did The Biden Admin Fudge Jobs Numbers Into Election? Labor Dept Report Raises Questions
“During the third quarter of 2024, the monthly job reports showed an increase of 399,000 jobs.

But with more comprehensive quarterly data being released by the Business Employment Dynamics (BED) survey, the new numbers had to be revised to show a 1,000 job decline during that same period.”

“From March through June of 2024, the economy supposedly added 398,000 nonfarm payrolls, according to the monthly job reports.

However, the BED data shows a net loss of 163,000 private sector jobs during that time period.

Instead of adding nearly 800,000 jobs during the middle of last year, the economy likely lost 160,000 of them instead.

The Democrats were insistent that the economy was doing great under Biden, but the voters refused to be gaslit about the economic pain they’ve been feeling and voted accordingly.”

    2. Doctors Throw Cold Water on Biden Statement That Doctors Only Found Metastatic Prostate Cancer Last Week

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, an oncologist who served in President Obama’s administration and joined Biden’s administration as a COVID-19 advisor, said Biden likely had prostate cancer at the start of his presidency in 2021.

“This is not speculation. If you have prostate cancer that has spread to the bone, then he most certainly—you were saying—had it when he was president of the United States,” MSNBC host Joe Scarborough asked Emanuel in an interview Monday.

“Oh yeah. He did not develop it in the last 100, 200 days,” the oncologist replied. “He had it while he was president. He probably had it at the start of his presidency in 2021.”

      1. Agreed.

        From the UK Telegraph:

Mr Biden would have most likely had prostate cancer while he was president, Dr Zeke Emanuel said. Speaking on MSNBC, Dr Emanuel, who was appointed to the Covid-19 Advisory Board by Mr Biden, said the condition would not have developed in the “last 100 days”. “He had it while he was president,” he added. “He probably had it at the start of his presidency in 2021. Yes, I don’t think there’s any disagreement about that.”

        all true

in 2025, there is no reason for a man to develop Prostate CA stage 4 with mets to bone especially someone with the medical access a US President has. This case would be more predictable if it were someone who is living in the rural setting, having little access to medical care due to a host of barriers, someone who does not believe in seeing physicians for regular checkups, or someone elderly who lives alone and has no one to care for them. I have to think Biden’s handlers knew, and used him just like they (and Jill) did in spite of his neurocognitive decline. They’ve done it to Popes, Kings, Queens and other monarchs. And with their recent public excoriation of Senator John Fetterman’s “declining mental health”, it just supports the unfortunate reality that these people use others for political gain. Elder abuse on steroids

        1. Estovir,
          Thank you for that analysis.

In other medical and health related news, MAHA Working: Goldman Finds “Better-For-You” Consumption Shift Underway
Goldman analysts Leah Jordan and Eli Thompson provided clients with early indications that consumers are shifting and seeking “better-for-you options” at the supermarket.

“Softer snacking demand with outperformance in better-for-you options,” Jordan wrote in a note to clients earlier this month.

She continued, “Several packaged food companies noted a slowdown in snacking demand as consumers focused on essentials in the current backdrop. However, better-for-you categories (e.g., high protein) have been outperforming, although select indulgences are resonating as well, noting relative strength in seasonal confection for HSY (e.g., Valentine’s Day and Easter) and cookies (over crackers) for MDLZ.”

          1. Well we did start our own vegetable and fruit garden, and the garden is doing well! Unfortunately the rabbits and squirrels like it too so we erected an electric fence around the garden, short enough the zap rabbits. Neighbors tell us deer are also a problem so now we need to erect a fence. Neighbors are all tending to their own gardens, then on weekends we tour each others gardens to get ideas and congratulate each other. No doubt you have a prize winning garden and farm

            1. Estovir,
I have seedlings started but cannot transplant them for at least another two weeks just to be on the safe side of a late frost. We have gotten them in the past. Have any outdoor cats? They can help with some of the critters from getting into you gardens.

        2. If they did in fact know or even suspected Joe Biden had prostrate cancer as early as 2021, and did nothing to treat it, kept it covered up, just to keep his keepers in the WH, that really is elder abuse. It is also sick, cruel, and goes to show you the level these kind of people are.

          1. Upstate, I don’t trust any information about Biden’s health, but one can look at statistics and draw conclusions.

Somewhere before age 80, post-mortem studies reveal that ~50% have prostate cancer. I was surprised when I heard that number, but it seems valid. That creates the problem of risk-benefit and recognition that to thoroughly investigate and treat leads to invasive procedures. Should patients enter the system where there is a significant risk, yet the cancer generally grows so slowly that so many die with prostate cancer, never knowing it? Many of the medical organizations advise cessation of cancer screening at 70-80.

Biden’s case has probably left out a bit of the truth. The tumor is aggressive and has spread to the bone. I read somewhere that he had a high Gleason rating. They needed a biopsy for that, and usually prostate cancer spreads slowly, years and rarely, when very aggressive, months. That means the discovery time and circumstances are likely different from what was released.

  4. Well Turley forgot to mention that Republicans were blaming DEI for the crashes as soon as Trump took over. Secretary of Transportation Duffy also voted against spending for FAA improvments to their system. Blaming Biden for it is just as stupid as Schumer’s claims.

      1. DEI was not the reason. Everything that goes wrong under Trump is automatically DEI is an excuse.

          1. Alleging is not evidence that it actually occurred. It still doesn’t justify elon firing more staff.

        1. Secret Service, DOD, Coast Guard, Border Patrol applications surge under Trump
Under U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks, Texas’ first border czar, the first quarter of 2025 marks “the most successful four-month recruitment stretch in the agency’s history.”

Since January, the Coast Guard is on track to exceed its recruitment goals by 110%, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security says.

During an April 30, 2025, cabinet meeting, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described what was happening as a “recruiting renaissance.”

“It’s been decades since we’ve seen this kind of recruiting in the Army, the Navy, the Marine Corps and the Air Force,” he said. “We can barely absorb the volume and retention [is also up] – men and women in the military don’t want to get out.”

The surge came after the Trump administration announced it was ending so-called diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) hiring and other policies and offering reinstatement to service members who were ousted because their religious accommodation requests were denied during the DOD’s COVID vaccine mandate.

“Everything starts and ends with warriors, from training to the battlefield,” Hegseth said. “We are leaving wokeness and weakness behind. No more pronouns. No more climate change obsession. No more emergency vaccine mandates. No more dudes in dresses,”

“From January 20, 2025, to May 1, 2025, USSS received over 22,000 applications to join its ranks,” DHS said, a 200% increase over the same period last year when only 7,000 applied.

The surge in applications is partially due to the administration ending DEI hiring and other policies, it said.

    1. Facts, George, facts do matter. We have the fact that the power was lost on the mexican ship and we know that DEI limited employable persons to service airport towers. Isn’t awful when facts ruin your tirade?

      1. No. Power was not lost. The engine was still running when it came in contact with the bridge. You can see the prop wash and the wake up to the collision point.
Analysis from marine experts are suspecting a failure to disengage reverse after pulling out of the pier. You can see the prop wash from the reversing engine on videos just before the collision. If there was a power failure all the lights on the ship would have been out.

DEI did not limit employable peresons. Elon fired FAA staff while they were already short staffed. He made things worse and now they are trying to blame Biden for Trump’s incompetence.

        1. Wrong.
FAA Turned Away 1,000 Air-Traffic Controllers Because of Diversity Goals
“The crux of the lawsuit is that the FAA, under the Obama administration, dropped a skill-based system for hiring controllers and replaced it with a “biographical assessment” in an alleged bid to boost the number of minority job applicants.”

“Brigida, who is white, alleges he was discriminated against solely based on his race when his application was rejected, court papers state.

The would-be air traffic controller, who graduated from Arizona State University’s collegiate training initiative in 2013, was turned down for a job even though he had scored 100% on his training exam, the lawsuit alleges.”

          https://www.cf.org/news/lawsuit-faa-turned-away-1000-air-traffic-controllers-because-of-diversity-goals/

        2. You swallow any fake fact fed to your gaping maw – all in the service to your ideology (you do know that this is the first sure sign of a cult). The power to GUIDE the boat has nothing to do with the engines.

    2. Wrong.
FAA is facing a 10-year-old lawsuit over allegations of race based hiring of air traffic controllers
“The Federal Aviation Administration is facing a large class-action lawsuit over allegations that it threw out 1,000 would-be air traffic controllers jobs because of the race of the applicants during former President Barack Obama’s administration.”

  5. Dear Mr. Turley, it seems to me that the Democrats are becoming more unhinged. Van Jones has called on the Democrats to apologize. I would suggest they begin by apologizing for every single bad “Great Society” policy.

    1. Yes, it was the great society that began the ruin, but (and I hate to say this, being a woman of 74) it was the women’s right to vote that softened our spines and allowed such nonsense as a “safety net” that holds millions of illegals and parasites.

  6. Schumer’s claim is premature. Reports from real analysts show that the ship may have been unable to disengage reverse gear as it was used to pull off the pier. The Tug was also in the wrong position to assist the ship as it went backwards into the bridge.

The wind and the peak tide also worked against the ship with the engine which seemed stuck in reverse. Yes that ship has an engine despite being a sailing vessel.

  7. Jonathan: Kind of premature to say what caused the Mexican ship “Cuahtemoc” to crash into the Brooklyn Bridge. Some reports indicate the ship was going in the wrong direction. No doubt the understaffed NTSB will find the cause.

    1. “Some reports say the ship was going in the wrong direction.”

fvcking idiot. Obviously it’s course was incorrect.

The correct course would not bring a ship into contact with a bridge.

    2. Based off your logic, then Schumer should STFU before making unsubstantiated and wild claims.

“Adams said at a news conference Saturday night that the tall ship with 277 people on board suffered a mechanical mishap that caused it to veer into the bridge as it had set sail from Pier 17 en route to sea.

“The pilot lost power of the ship,” he said, adding that two crew members were on a mast and were injured in the collision.”
      https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/tall-ship-flying-mexican-flag-strikes-brooklyn-bridge-rcna207520

  8. Chucky has a list that he blames Trump for:

    >The Mexican training ship collision with a bridge
    >The jet & helicopter collision at Regan airport
    >Joe Biden’s terminal prostate cancer

    Just to name a few

    1. I want to add the impending asteroid impact coming our way – I’m certain Trump planned that too.

      1. The next solar eclipse will be Chicken-Littled everywhere by Democrats as being 1) potentially catastrophic, 2) a consequence of climate change, and 3) Trump’s fault.

      2. Once again, a line from Spongebob neatly summarizes TDS:
“He burned our crops, poisoned our water supply, and delivered a plague unto our houses!”
        “HE DID??”
“No! But are we gonna wait around until he does?”
        -Rabble

    2. Sooner or later, Democrats will start blaming Trump for Joe Biden’s 2020 election, which precluded their winning in 2024.

  9. I wonder what position in the USCG is supposed to guard the Brooklyn Bridge from sailing ships that have lost their power? Is it an officer or an enlisted man and where is he stationed?

You really have to be a tool to believe anything coming out of Schumer’s mouth. FFS.

    JLM

  10. Chuck Schumer is a pathetic fool. Everything his says can be discounted as fallacious.

  11. Democrats, can you look any more absurd? No wonder they are polling, within their own party, so poorly. Seriously Democrats, if you want to win elections, regain the trust of the American people, get off the stupid and crazy platform. It is not working for you. And the stupid and crazy progressives in your party, give them the boot. They are making you look bad.

  12. Jonathan: King of premature to say what caused the collision of the Mexican ship “Cuahtemoc” with the Brooklyn Bridge. Some reports say the ship was going in the wrong direction. No doubt the understaffed NTSB will get to the bottom of this tragedy.

    1. “Some reports say the ship was going in the wrong direction.”

fvcking idiot. Obviously it’s course was incorrect.

The correct course would not bring a ship into contact with a bridge.

      1. The ship did not seem to be able to disengage from reverse. It was using it’s engine to reverse out of the pier. The tide and the wind were pushing the ship towards the bridge and the tug was in a bad position to help stop the colision.

    2. Speaking of the stupid and crazy that Democrats need to get out of their party, here is one now.

  13. Schumer’s statement echoes the tactic of the “51 intelligence professionals” letter about Hunter Biden’s laptop: no facts, no specifics, no evidence, but conspiracy-theory type wiggle words. He begins with an assertive, summary “We know,” then proceeds to “might,” “indications,” “may not be,” If this were the case.” Hyperbole based on hypotheticals.

On the positive side, at least he did not blame The Russians. Maybe Screechel Maddow will do that, her favorite SOP.

  14. Democrats lose all credibility when they “talk the fool” like this making EVERYTHING political and they do it so frequently! Why can’t they just be normal instead of being so weird?

  15. “I would rather be the man who bought the Brooklyn Bridge than the man who sold it.” ~Will Rogers.

Schumer always reminds me of the man who sold it.

  16. Schumer may sound like a fool but I suspect there is method to his madness. Based upon the Dem’s approval ratings, it looks like they have lost nearly all support from moderates and independents. Schumer doesn’t really care, his seat is so safe that he can rely on only the hardcore leftists. Posts like his are just a way to keep that support alive. Once he loses his wingnut base, then they really have a problem.

  17. it is ok…no Democrat has been punished for a crime in the last 30 years!
    Why would it happen now.

watch the video the boat was being dragged by a tug
Why under a too short bridge, with people in the rigging…no idea!

    1. No. The tug was not dragging it. The ship was under it’s own power using reverse to pull away from the pier. If you look closely you can see the wake and propwash as it’s approaching the bridge. The tug was in a bad position to assist given the strong tide flow towards the bridge and the wind.
