We previously discussed the arrest of former Washington State University teaching assistant Patrick Mahoney and WSU research assistant Gerald Hoff for beating down engineering student Jay Sani for wearing a Trump hat. Notably, after the attack, Mahoney explained that, if you choose to wear a pro-Trump hat, “there’s gonna be a price to pay.” There is also a price for a beat down. He was just sentenced to one week in prison and a year’s probation. In the video, Sani was shown wearing a “Take America Back” hat and police say that Mahoney took him down and then “said ‘F**k you or f**k off’ to Sani before walking away.” Gerald Hoffin is also shown as participating in the attack.
Sani told the cops “Some people might find it offensive, but it’s 2025, man. It’s just a hat.”
When the officer interviewed Mahoney later, the instructor appeared unapologetic for an attack on the “ol’ boy”:
“I asked Mahoney what happened tonight. Mahoney said that he saw ‘ol’ boy’ walking around. Mahoney did not name Sani by name but said ‘I’ve seen this guy, f**king, on campus before. I know he’s like f**king Right Wing dude. He’s got a f**king, like, Make America Great Again
hat.”
The two men were charged with fourth-degree assault. Mahoney told police he had seen Sani on WSU’s campus and “knew he was a ‘right-wing dude.’” He added, “You wanna wear the hat, hey, there’s gonna be a price to pay.”
One would expect that any future teaching opportunities for Mahoney are quite limited, but many faculty members have espoused violent sentiments toward Republicans or conservatives. Some have been promoted or lionized for their positions.
Recently, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared, “I’m going to punch these sons of bitches in the mouth.” It follows other violent rhetoric from Democratic leaders. It is not surprising that people like Mahoney, even in higher education, believe that violence is the “price” that conservatives must be prepared to pay if they openly express their political views.
Jonathan Turley is the Shapiro professor of public interest law at George Washington University and the author of “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage.”
Dear Mr. Turley, this is a perfect example of the two-tiered legal system we have here. Liberals have used the courts for years to get their way with various policies. Now it has ground down to people getting away with attacking others. As mentioned in an earlier comment, this was pre-meditated, and I would add a hate crime as well.
Two-tiered? This case? You on shrooms or something?
The case was straightforward. Mahoney “attacked” Sani by taking his hat. Then Sani threw food he was carrying at Mahoney which escalated the situation. One punch was thrown and landed on Sani. That’s a misdemeanor of the fourth degree. A week in jail is a fair sentence for the offense. Nothing harsher according to the law is required.
“Mahoney “attacked” Sani by taking his hat.”
Nice scare quotes. However, assault is still assault, even when you try to minimize it.
Now imagine the punishment if two conservative guys attacked a guy wearing a trans rights hat or a pride jersey. I am so sick of Doublestandardstan rules.
The victim should sue the college, sue the men personally and even sue the state for disparate treatment.
Shouldn’t this punishment have been enhanced due to this being an obvious hate crime?
The typically no consequences of the Leftist judicial system in certain states!
No consequences? He was sentenced to one week in jail and pay restitution. That’s a consequence.
“No consequences? He was sentenced to one week in jail and pay restitution. That’s a consequence.”
We all know that the original commenter meant appropriate consequences. Stop minimizing leftist violence.
So it is ok to beat someone up because you do not like what they say? So both get charged and one gets a week and the other not. Does one wonder what would have happened if these two brainiacs would have had their hat handed to them? Do you really think they would just been good with a similar sentence. I am not sure why it has gotten so nasty tempered. Seemingly educated people acting like common thugs. What will not be remembered is this guy without a teaching job in the future and an assault conviction on his resume. I hope it was worth it to him.
It’s part of the great double standard. Apart from a very few moderate Democrats, the Ds are continuing their giant temper tantrum, which was ignited by impotent rage, which in turn was ignited by the loss of power in all three branches of government. Concepts like self-control and earning respect seem to be lost on them.
And conservatives will turn the other cheek in the name of the moral high ground.
Seems like an appropriate time for the victim to apply for a concealed carry permit or failing that, carrying a knife. I realize that this is the state of Washington and likely concealed carry permits are not easy to come by. There are a plethora of knives out there that are easy to obtain and carry. I am not a proponent of violence but I also don’t wish to be someone’s punching bag either. Just don’t carry the knife on a plane.
Also the assailant’s comments about seeing the victim and his hat and thinking he was a “right wing dude” sort of gives the lie to his plea of a 2 second thought process before attacking the victim.
Also why no fine. Cash sometimes get’s one’s attention faster than a short sentence and probation.
Nope licensed trained support 100 pound male dog well trained in protection work. Not many people will screw with a large dog that looks Intimidating. They see things coming way before humans do too. To use a knife you have to allow people close to you and you have to be really well trained to use it. Self defense classes or the dog work better.
I grew up with a 100 pound male boxer puppy that I had gotten as a b-day present. Dog was a sweetheart for everyone to play with or pet however go ahead and act aggressive towards me. Dog would stand in front of me just growling, showing his teeth. He actually protected a 5 yr old little boy he didn’t know that well from some unknown man who tried to grab him. He just stood his ground and snarled. Everyone suddenly paid attention and the man ran off. How the dog knew is still a mystery. No one ever pushed it past that. He made consequences very clear. Of course neither could my mother hit me any longer. 😂😂😂
*. Dogs are amazing. They’ve been domesticated for such a long time humans have become their family.
Trained dog sounds like a good idea. I would not even cross my old German Shepherd who was not trained but big and fierce to anyone who was not our family.
*. It’s Washington, psych place of Chaz or chop.
The attackers have been trained as was the Manchurian candidate to respond to hats. Sani shouldn’t be in Washington.
” this is the state of Washington and likely concealed carry permits are not easy to come by”
I don’t know the specifics for Washington, but permits to carry in 2A-hostile states became an order of magnitude easier to obtain post Bruen and Heller. New Jersey was 100% no-go for civilian carry 5 years ago, now we appear to be approaching 100,000 permits.
“I’ve seen this guy, f**king, on campus before.” does not jibe with, “an impulsive decision I made in a two-second window that I shouldn’t have made.”
This was a pre-meditated attack. I bet this guy was hoping to catch this guy out at night so he could attack him under the cover of darkness…
A week, for aggravated assault and battery, pled down to 4th degree assault?
How about a year and a day in prison and 5 years probation?
Exactly! 1 week? That is a joke…
It’s lib run WA state.
I’m your Huckleberry. Say When.
It would seem as though the left is trying to start something they cannot win. Eventually the left is going to push the people on the right to push back. This will not be a good day for them.
Maybe it is time to retaliate in kind. Democrats are once again showing their true colors. The behavior by the “prof” and his assailant buddy are typical KKK behavior just like their roots in intimidation, violence, and lack of regret for their actions. I grew up in a community where the KKK was an ever-present threat to good people if one of the klan thought someone was out of line according to their warped ideology. Blacks, Indians, and anyone violating their warped sense of morality. A burning cross, beatings, humiliations, etc. The Democrats along with their thug supporters, Antifa, and now a collegiate teaching assistant engaging in an attack against a student wearing a hat. Imagine the limited level of intelligence the teaching assistant and his toady are stuck with. And little Adam’s tendency to support violence is not surprising. A crybaby is always the one to encourage others to commit acts of violence when they are safely away from the violent action, hiding in a closet.
Sounds like a perfect chance to bring a federal civil rights case against these two.
A teaching assistant?
Allow me to quote a famous Fabian Socialist, George Bernard Shaw:
“Those who can, do.
Those who cannot, teach.”
In your face, “teaching assistant “
it is CLEAR… Democrats are FASCISTS!
Supporting Democrats is supporting German leaders in the 1930’s
This is why we NEED TO END Federal Aid to college, non-profits, cities and states!
Ban Public Unions
Defund Democrats and let their failed ideals….FAIL
Capitalism will FIX THEM!
A leftist teaching assistant?
A week? That’s just a nodding thank you for your efforts to “save the Democrat party, I mean democracy”
The left has always enjoyed using harm to others.
Why do you think they support groups like BLM & Antifa
Wow. A whole week, huh? And no remorse for baselessly attacking another human, just for doing so in a way that resulted in some consequences. These people are sick.
“ Wow. A whole week, huh? And no remorse for baselessly attacking another human, just for doing so in a way that resulted in some consequences. These people are sick.”
He did express remorse. He threw one punch to the face after Sani threw his food at Mahoney.
From the link on the article, “ Mahoney told Hart he should have acted differently that night and he was not trying to fight Sani.
“It was an impulsive decision I made in a two-second window that I shouldn’t have made,” he said.”
“He threw one punch to the face after Sani threw his food at Mahoney.”
Which is also known as self defense by Sani after he was assaulted by one of your fellow violent leftists for the crime of wearing a hat. You really are a bunch of snowflakes, aren’t you.
He said this after being sentenced but according to the office which ids in fact after the fact, he’s showed NONE
