The Beauty of Boise in the Fall

I am returning today from a speech in Boise, Idaho. I love coming to Idaho and Boise in the “Treasure Valley” is always a delight. This city was initially founded as a fort along the Oregon Trail and grew rapidly during the Gold Rush. It remains an American gem, a quiet and graceful city along the Boise River.

For urban dwellers, the friendliness of everyone is striking. Everyone greets you with a giant smile and eagerness. It takes a while to dispel a certain suspicion, but they cannot all be serial killers. It just happens to be a city filled with wonderful people who genuinely want to help you.

Unfortunately, this was a brief trip and I could not get out on the trails. However, here are a few pics.  I started by having a burger at Fork, a favorite eating spot known for its fried asparagus.

I visited the State Capitol building, which was built in 1863 when this was still a territory. It was not until July 3, 1890, that Idaho became the 43rd state.  The statue with the shoes is the Idaho Women’s Suffrage Commemorative Sculpture to celebrate the trailblazing women of this state. It is the work of local sculptor Irene Deely.

  1. Like Richard Harris, in A Man Called Horse, I am having pain-induced visions. My Spirit traveled to some weird dimension, where a Medicine Man, sitting inside a wickiup, imparted the following Shamanic Knowledge to me:

    The Girls In Boise
    (Given as Wisdom to Floyd)

    The Girls in Boise
    Are very noisy,
Or so I’ve been led to believe.

    They fart sonic booms,
    And their moans from bedrooms,
Are much louder than you can conceive!

    As for multiple “O’s”-
You don’t want to hear those –
Think hundreds of Banshees in tutti!

    The sonic vibrations,
    Can crumble foundations,
Sooo, prepare before doing your “Duty”!!!

[Note: I returned to this Astral Plane, and like Coleridge, with Xanadu, I immediately began writing down this Wisdom Poem, and fortunately, there was no “Person on business from Porlock” to derail my Memory. I had to look up the word “tutti”, and discovered that it was a musical term meaning “in unison”, or, “with all voices or instruments together.” This is how I know that this was a True Vision, and not just a Dream, because I never knew what “tutti” meant, until now. No shame in that. . . 🙂 ]

      1. I can not believe that you would disparage the Arcane Knowledge passed on by a Native American! Something miraculous happened, and a Medicine Man made a house call for me! Go sit on a tack!

  2. Thank you for the ode to Idaho, although I am of two minds about it, because I grew up in Idaho and it is one of the few great unsung states. We prefer to stay quiet about the many pluses of the state, so it doesn’t become walls of concrete and glass in the future and filled with urban types who cannot look someone in the eye and say, “hello.” Paula

  3. *. I visited Idaho many years ago. It was a beautiful State.

Anyone explain the the iconography of the shoes in the suffrage sculpture? Shoes in sculpture 🤔… my feet are big and strong?

    1. Notice the line of shoes behind her, symbolizing the prior generations that fought for the right to vote. The shoe in her hand symbolizes: We’ve won. And now future generations of women can “walk in our shoes.”

      1. Another great sculpture …here, have a shoe.

The French have lamented for years about the Pei pyramid. Personally, I’d relocate it.

Idaho is a beautiful State with trees, hills and the amazing snake river.

  4. I have never been to Boise, but I did have to unintentionally visit Idaho Falls once. I’m a Type 1 diabetic and on our honeymoon driving tour of the West when in Jackson, Wyoming I accidentally dropped and broke my blood glucose meter. It happened to be Walmart brand and all of my testing supplies only worked with it. We had to take a one day break while I crossed the Teton Pass to the nearest Walmart in Idaho Falls to replace it It was a breathtaking drive. I’m gad I went. I could have extended our stay by a day but I had reservations in Moab the next day and it would have thrown everything off.

      1. It was the day I went. Although it was July I caught some snow on the Beartooth Pass a few days before.

  5. Just got back from Boise. We took the Old Town Trolly tour and learned quite a bit about the local history. l would recommend it to everyone.

  6. (OT)

Trump penned 8 peace deals in 9 months. He did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize. I’m sure that month he missed is the reason.

    1. My understanding is that nominations had to be made by January so 2026 would be his year. Remember that Obama didn’t win his Nobel until the year after he had brought light to Denver.

    2. HONORARY NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR TRUMP

“I dedicated this award to the Venezuelan people and President Trump because I believe that’s absolutely fair.“

“We, the Venezuelan people, are absolutely grateful to President Trump for the way he has supported democracy and freedom in the Americas.”

      – María Corina Machado

  7. Enjoy the photos of a place I have never been. I also enjoyed the photos of The Hermitage which I have visited.

  8. Well its eight o’clock in Boise Idaho

  9. I am just waiting for the first s@@tlib to have a meltdown because you spoke favorably of Whites who displaced the loving, peaceful ‘Native Americans’ who inhabited Idaho for millennia.

    1. Best guess is they have been silent because they keeled over in disgust after seeing that ginormous American flag hanging in the Boise Capitol.

  10. Thanks Jonathan. I am travelling across the country and will stop here now on your recommendation. I did the same with Prague recently.

  11. Your left before the Saturday football game with visiting New Mexico! Your could have seen the blue football field.
