Murder, She Wrote: CBS Reporter Declares Good Shooting to be “Murder” by ICE

CBS News has made great strides under Bari Weiss, but clearly there remains work to be done. On Monday’s “CBS Evening News,” CBS News Homeland Security and Justice Correspondent Nicole Sganga declared that the video released by DHS shows “the minutes leading up to the murder of Renee Good.” It is an all-too-familiar pattern in which the mainstream media aligns its reporting with the advocacy of groups on the left. As I have written, one can certainly disagree with the necessity of using lethal force in this instance, but it fell well within the established guidelines for the use of such force set by the Supreme Court and lower courts.

Spanga added, “Trump administration officials have claimed she intended to ram ICE agents before she was shot.”

In the end, it does not matter what her intentions were. Her actions, not her intentions, drive the analysis. She refused orders to get out of the car after obstructing the federal agents and then struck the officer.

The protests and the reporting seem entirely detached from the legal standard. It is much like the media mantra that the January 6th riot was an “insurrection.” It did not matter that no such charge was brought against Trump or others. (Only a handful were charged with sedition, which some of us opposed).

Democrats, particularly in Minnesota, where the fraud scandal is consuming the coverage, have leaped to the front of the mob to call for the arrest of this officer. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) on Monday again described the incident as “a clearly thought out murder.”

Omar explained:

“I mean, it is, the most BS statement again, that the administration, can put out. You see this officer clearly go in front of, the car as she reverses. You see his hands, on the car, you see, his feet is very far away from the wheels of the car. So there was no possibility, that he might have been afraid, of getting, hit by the car. And so it is a clear PR, it’s a defense, of a clear murder, that we see on TV, by the administration. And it is shameful, and it should not be acceptable is unconscionable. And I stand by everything that I’ve said.

“I am very comfortable with the word murder. There is no conscience way in which you watch the video that the administration itself has produced. And you do not see this person, this officer, Jonathan Ross, clearly murdering this woman. Not only does he shoot her in the face, but you see two more shots being fired on the side of the driver’s window. There is no way to explain this outside of it being a clearly thought out murder, an execution of this woman.”

A “clearly thought out murder”? The video shows a split-second response from an officer who was struck by the car.

The Supreme Court has stressed that  the reasonableness standard is addressed “from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene, rather than with the 20/20 vision of hindsight.” As the Court stressed in Graham v. Connor, “police officers are often forced to make split-second judgments—in circumstances that are tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving[.]‍”

Notably, even officers who were able to evade or dodge an approaching car have been found to have lawfully used lethal force. No actual contact is required.

Given the strong arguments that can be made for this officer, one would think that CBS and other news organizations would avoid a declaration of murder. Even if you disagree with the use of force, it is not true that this can be reported as murder. There has not been a completion of the investigation, let alone an adjudication.

  1. Dear Mr. Turley, until the left begins talking about the many young women killed by illegal aliens, I do not have time for their “tears” over Ms. Good. Ms. Good planned on interfering with a police operation and placed herself in harms way. She got what she deserved.

  2. . Anyone have the forensic reports? What we know is the deceased died of a gunshot wound to the head. An ICE agent fired 2 or 3 shots in under 1 second.
    Nothing else.

Camera angles are not all available.

    1. ^^^ Jonathan Ross is part of an ICE special tactical unit. The tactical unit is a SWAT team within ICE.

Please note there is a TRO in place preventing NG deployment. Some agree with Justice Alito’s deep concern for the safety of ICE agents.

      1. ^^ President Trump has my admiration at this time and his belief in the United States of America is admirable.

  3. Had Ms. Good not been part of a mob organized to bait ICE agents into reacting in a manner contrary to their mission she’d be alive today. Of course, she never imagined that an armed agent could be goaded, through prolonged and unrelenting physical and psychological harassment, into a life-and-death state of alarm. Too bad for her. Too bad she didn’t understand that all humans have breaking points. Too bad that out of all the agents on scene she accelerated her SUV into one, perhaps the only one, who was so close to the edge of panic that he reacted in a life-and-death manner.

Ms. Good rolled the dice and crapped out. Too bad she didn’t understand the rules of the game.

  4. These idiots who keep quoting “ICE Policy” by posting ridiculous BS they got “off the internet” need to stay in their bubble and leave the running of the country to the adults who are in charge.
Democrat politicians don’t care about the dead girl who clearly and proudly threatened ICE agents. They only care about votes, from Somalis and the blue-haired-nose-ring-self-loathing white chicks who virtue-signal their insanity to achieve status among their bubble mates, caring more about that than their own children.
She lived in a city/state that burned down police stations, defunded the police and clearly doesn’t promote respect for LEOs, as their governor and mayor spew from their cesspool mouths daily.
Nobody with a brain thinks this wasn’t a justified self-defense shooting by a LEO who was rightfully trying to detain a multiple law-breaker.
She didn’t have to die, but it was her choice not to comply, so she reaped what she sowed.

    1. The opposite is true. Politicians are not threatening ICE thugs enough. Those racist violent criminal thugs need to know that their time living outside of prison will soon come to an end.
And that is if we are to go easy on them. True justice will see them all executed.

  5. I watched a football game this weekend. On a tackle a player was hit in the hip by another players helmit.
He got up limping. It was a natural reaction to a blow to his hip.He wasn’t faking it and he went to the sideline.
I watched the video of the shooting in Minneapolis this morning. After being rammed by the car the ice agent was visibly limping. It too was a natural reaction of a blow to the hip.
We should remember that at first they tried to tell us that the agent had not been struck.
As the song goes the camera don’t lie. If the agent would have reacted just a split second slower he would have been very seriously injured if not dead. A deadly weapon does not have to be a gun. She tried to kill the man but her timing and her aim was off. Will her wife be charged with accessory to an attempted murder in the fine state of Minnesota? Not a snow balls chance in hell.
