“You’d be Justified in Shooting”: Rep. Jerry Nadler Triggers Outcry Over Violent Rhetoric Against ICE

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D., NY) is under fire this week for joining other Democratic members in reckless rhetoric to fuel the growing threats against federal law enforcement officers. Nadler suggested that citizens could be justified in shooting masked agents, a chilling claim made earlier by other Democratic leaders.

The New York Post reported the comments made in a Judiciary Committee hearing. Nadler declared:

“What is really the major problem in this country today is the fascism in our streets. The attacks on American citizens, by masked hoodlums. If you were attacked by a masked person, you might think you were being kidnapped. You’d be justified in shooting the person — to protect yourself.”

The agents are wearing masks because different groups are actively publishing their identities and personal information online. The result has not only been doxxing but threats made against the families of these agents. Democratic politicians have pledged to assist in the effort to “unmask” and publish the identities of these officers as threats soar.

For many, these statements suggest that they have a license under laws like Stand Your Ground to shoot at agents and claim mistaken self-defense. The continued use of such rhetoric in the face of soaring attacks and threats against officers is the worst form of demagoguery.

At the same time, members like Rep. Dan Goldman (D. NY) deny that there is evidence of a sharp increase in attacks despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Notably, Nadler and his colleagues pushed for the impeachment of Donald Trump for what they called his inflammatory rhetoric on January 6th despite his call for the protests to remain peaceful.

Other members are engaging in the same hyperbolic rhetoric to appeal to the growing mob on the left. Sen. Chris Murphy (D. Conn.) seems the most unhinged: “What is happening in Minnesota right now is a dystopia. ICE is tear gassing elementary schools. It is disappearing legal residents into cars. It is murdering American citizens.”

Aspiring Democrats are getting the message. Total Wine billionaire David Trone — who is running to recapture his Maryland congressional district from fellow Democrat Rep. April McClain-Delaney, declared this week that the federal government is “literally executing people on the streets” in “not just Minneapolis… all over the United States.”

Ohio Democratic Attorney General candidate Elliot Forhan is running on the catchy pledge that “I will kill Donald Trump.” It is a race to the bottom as Democratic leaders try to take the lead in mob politics.

When combined with the rationalization for the use of lethal force against officers, this rhetoric is not just inflammatory but dangerous. We have heard these voices before in our history. As discussed in Rage and the Republicwe have a rising class of new Jacobins, politicians and pundits who are pandering to the mob. History does not bode well for these politicians seeking to ride the wave of rage when the mob turns against them.

  1. GOP has to stop caring what democrats complain about!
Democrats are fighting a CIVIL WAR like 1850’s. So either start jailing these criminals…or we go to 1860’s

  2. so…when are we going to jail criminal democrats

Helping illegals is a crime. Calling to ASSISSINATE people is A CRIME

    Bondi? Trump?

  3. “You’d be justified in shooting the person . . .”

    ICE “is murdering American citizens.”

The Trump administration is “literally executing people on the streets.”

And then when there is blood in the streets, Leftist politicians wail: “But we didn’t mean that.”

The hell you didn’t. You’d sacrifice your own mother for your “noble” cause to “get Trump” and to seize total power.

P.S. Total Wine and David Trone. Thanks for the heads up. No more shopping there.

  4. If I were progressively stupid, I would be ashamed of supporting these fools.

I guess I can’t imagine being that stupid.

  5. Not one Democrat spoke out about the masked goons acting like the Gestapo with the Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department who used excessive force against unarmed mostly peaceful protestors on January 6, 2021. Not one. They didn’t speak out against the murder of Ashli Babbitt, an unarmed five-foot tall woman, killed for the capital offense of climbing through a broken window. Democrats have no credibility on this issue, including Nadler, who sits in his cushy office, protected 24/7 by heavily-armed Capitol Police.

  6. I’m sorry, I know this will be considered extreme. But then ICE agents are justIfied In shooting anybody who seems to them might be a threat and is actively screaming or carrying on with them and them makes a sudden move. And sorry, but Nadler should be arrested and charged, even though his fellow fascists on the bench in DC will probably protect him. It really isn’t extreme. Remember they are ramming cars in to ICE agents, shot at them (killing prisoners), killed two guardsmen, and they even tried to kill Trump last year.

    1. “Nadler should be arrested and charged, ” Honestly, what for? That thing called the 1st Amendment will get in the way. Talking trash has been a way of life for humans, politicians more so. But changing that behavior is impossible. But I know the commenters here relish the idea of censorship of democrats, not at the expense of the 1st A. Time for people to grow up, quit acting like children. That’s it I said it. So no attack me.

  7. First, the only way figures like Murphy, Goldman, and Swalwell can make the news is by making extreme and incredibly stupid remarks—now an almost daily occurrence.

Second, it is fair to classify many Democrats as political thrill-seekers. How else could Nadler make a statement comparing attacks on ICE officers to ‘stand your ground’ laws? This is what Schumer does day in and day out: puffing up the rhetoric to extreme, thrilling levels. It titillates the base. This same thrill-seeking is what spurs AOC to claim Musk is not a brilliant engineer, but merely a wealthy con man.

Third, this behavior mirrors the entertainment industry, which is chock-full of thrill-seekers of every description, too many to even mention. The latest, by a singer I’ve never heard of, about illegals on “stolen land” was the true perfection of stupidity.

    1. The only way gdonaldallen can get attention here “is by making extreme and incredibly stupid remarks – now an almost daily occurrence”.

  8. These clowns so called senators need to feel the heat don’t come knocking on my door I might mistake you for the garbage that you are 💩

  9. I’d be fine with requiring ICE, or any other federal agents, be prevented from masking. As long as doxxing a federal agent is made a death penalty offense. Any takers?

        1. Anonymous the Stupid, I believe that Dustoff makes the point that maybe if you allow BLM, ANTIFA and the Hamas Jew hating crowd to wear masks while calling for ICE to be demasked it makes you a hypocrite, a partisan hack and someone that favors the lawless over law enforcement. But of course you really weren’t making a point, you just have a parasitic need to glom on to anyone that does make a point. Like the great Dustoff.

  10. Isn’t this just what you would expect from the New Democrat party— violence for violence sake? As a group, they are evil, conscienceless curs and Nadlers comment is just another example.

      1. First Amendment rights end when credible threats are made; ergo, credible threats of physical harm, up to and including murder, are not protected speech.

When does hyperbole cross the line between a harmless figure of speech and an outright lie? Repeated hyperbolic statements used to garner votes might reasonably be interpreted as purposeful untruths. When politicians of either political party rely on untruths to meet their goals, it is time for said politicians to reassess their goals. And it is time for voters to help them make the decision to leave political positions and return to nonpolitical jobs.

        1. Suze, your comment is a great reply to Mary above who claimed that this is just the 1st A and everyone should calm down. Making threats or rhetoric that will get people killed crosses the line and we have seen what happens next.

    1. Despite not knowing the specifics behind Trump’s call to “nationalize” elections, several Republicans have come out in opposition. I am aware of no Democrats who ever oppose cranks like Nadler and Murphy who call for violence against ICE, Trump, or Republicans.

BTW, elections have already been “nationalized”. Congress enacted the Voting Rights Act – which many Democrats voted against – because Democrats enacted laws designed to suppress the votes of black people.

More recently, five years ago, Democrats put forth a bill to nationalize elections in an effort to legitimize all the cheating they facilitated under the guise of Covid.

Promote your false equivalencies to your fellow Useful Idiots who don’t know history.

      1. Dems tried to nationalize the vote with their very first bills after Biden was elected. One of the items included in these bills was OUTLAWING states requiring ID for voting???? Why would that be? Could it be for the same reason that despite 83% of all Americans wanting voter ID, including 71% of Democrats, the party still fights against voter ID?

  11. Can we assume Nader is amount those that we can shoot as well? This is abuse of their immunity. And they are trying to nuke the executive branch immunity. This hypocrisy

    1. No such legal concept of “abuse of immunity”. They, like you, have 1st Amendment protection. If you want to destroy them, then change the Constitution. But watch out what you wish for.

      1. 18 U.S.C. § 373 – Solicitation to Commit a Crime of Violence
Further, federal solicitation charges usually involve solicitations to commit acts of violence. Most violations are dealt with under 18 U.S. Code § 373, which explicitly concerns “solicitation to commit a crime of violence.”
