We have now all seen it: President Barack Obama killing a small fly and then gleefully celebrating that he “got the little sucker.” Now, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) (never late in embarrassing itself) has denounced the killing and encouraged people to use a “catch and release” device.
PETA insists that the President should have left to retrieve a proper Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside. PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich issued a statement: “We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals. We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals.”
Of course, it is good to see PETA moving away from soft porn, here.

If you turn up the volume, you can hear the fly is screaming, “Help me! Help me!”
Maybe one of Dick’s experiments escaped from the basement.
On the other hand, Obama’s totally lost the fly vote regardless.
Good one Buddha! LOL
Wasn’t there a T-Zone episode where the person killed the spider and it just kept coming back after each kill, larger and larger every time?
Is there a catch-and-release trap for politicians?
BIL, Thanks for the ROTFLOL.
For all, see the ending of the film The Fly, 1958, starring the immortal Vincent Price, or look it up on wiki.
Curtis Mayfield really angry. Oh! Never mind that was superfly.
“There are no insect politicians”
Seth Brundle, The Fly ’86
The ’86 remake was outstanding, Goldblum was likewise outstanding and his character was very smartly written. The dialog was excellent. Until the end I had trouble believing it was a Cronenberg movie. I love that movie. And Cronenberg.
From article:
PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich issued a statement: “We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals. We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals.”
I don’t have a problem with that statement. The world needs al little more of that attitude IMO. One of the coolest things about working with my various plants and in the yard is the insects. I avoid killing bugs whenever possible and have had to rescue and release more than one small flying insect from my kitty’s after they (the bugs) had gotten into the house inadvertently.
We have little brown, compact spiders in the yard that look like crabs. I like ‘em because they have attitude. They take no prisoners. I came across one that was about 1/8″ on a leaf and it turned it’s body to follow the motion of my hand so I moved my body around it’s leaf and it followed me. After I messed with it a while it got tired of being bothered and kind of reared up and put it’s 2 front legs up in a ‘threatening’ manner and quickly advanced on me. I moved around it’s leaf again and it followed me in the same aggressive manner coming all the way to the edge of it’s leaf. I had to LOL that little guy.
whooliebacon: …superfly
LOL, Superfly could kick the Chief Executive’s a**!
Hopefully we can all learn a lesson from PETA’s foolishness, and never embarrass ourselves by showing compassion for all life. At least we can count on Mr Turley to show us the error of our ways.
PETA isn’t doing this to “express compassion”, they’re doing it for publicity. They benefit from the control of the insect population just like the rest of us. Or am I to believe that if their homes were infested that they would simply ‘live and let live’. Because after all the fleas, ticks, and roaches have a right to life too!
Jill & Vince,
Thank you.
One lives to be of service.
Jill,
If that wasn’t a TZ episode, it should have been.
Whoolie,
I got to go with lotta. Superfly could flip the President like a cheese omelet.
MAS,
Exactly right. Also, why only treat animals ethically? What do they have against slime molds?
Unfortunately, the fly had it commin’
Per FAA rules, all civilian aviators know that the White House skies are “no-fly zones”
Furthermore, flies are uncontrollably drawn to…corrupt, hypocritical politicians, and such as…
I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep repeating it until I’m well-known as that cranky old guy: PETA is so far removed from reality, they simply *have* to be a front for the meat industry.
Hans,
I never thought of it that way but now that you mention it…….hmm. Underlying your statement of course is that PETA can really go off course in such a way that it destroys the validity of part of their efforts. I do believe that the biblical formulation of Humankind having dominion and therefore the right to treat inhumanely, all animals is incorrect. This is the underlying basis of the PETA argument and I agree. however, except for spiders which I try to capture and throw out the door alive, I will gladly kill any flying or crawling bug invading my territory. Do they have feelings? Who knows? However, just as they would do to interlopers in their territory, I will do when they interlope in mine. Spiders I try not to kill because they kill the other bugs. Even with spiders though, they had better stay out of my sight.
What’s the problem with using Tasers?
I agree with the President, kill the little sucker so he may continue his journey to enlightenment. Freeing his soul was the act of a great man and I am sure the fly’s soul is greatly relieved to be back on the journey.
If you freeze a Lobster before you boil it, is it capable of screaming as it cooks?
PETA= People Eating Tasty Animals.
But it is better than swallowing a fly but I don’t know why.
PETA may soon be a moot issue. Here. Proof that not all animals are cute and cuddly. In fact, some of them act a lot like us.

eniobob,
Thanks for the sweet link. Those are actually awesome pictures from a technical standpoint. It’s hard to make a spider look beautiful instead of threatening (as is proper given their predatory nature), but they did it.
Gotta’ see this lobbyist:

Hey PETA!!!!
Why not save your “outrage” for when it’s appropriate.

Some things make me doubt whether our continuation as a species is a good idea. This is one of them.
