In my work in prisons, I have had on occasion to insist on dietary changes, particularly for my Muslim clients. However, this is the first time I have heard of an outside organization asking a prison to impose a particularly dietary plan. PETA has asked for a vegetarian diet for Christopher Lee McCuin, 25, who killed and cooked his girlfriend 21-year-old Jana Shearer in Texas.
“It is up to you to prevent McCuin from contributing to any more suffering and death by placing him on a healthy, humane vegetarian diet,” the letter by PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich reads. Only then, Friedrich suggests, can we stop his being “involved in any senseless killing.”
What is curious is that other radicals have suggested it would be better for humans to go extinct. Indeed, as found here, there is a formal voluntary human extinction movement building.
If this is the case, why wouldn’t PETA want McCuin to eat humans? Well, it will not matter. Human consumption is not one the list of special meals. For that matter, third parties have no standing to demand such diets. Moreover, it cannot be imposed on McCuin. Finally, there remains the question of what happened to PETA, once a serious organization doing serious work.
