Florida Teacher Fined But Retained After Allegedly Racist Lesson for Middle School Students

A Marianna, Fla. middle-school teacher, Greg Howard, will not be fired after he allegedly explained to his class what supporters of Barach Obama really mean by “Change.” He reportedly wrote the word on the board as an acronym: “C.H.A.N.G.E. — Come Help A (N-word) Get Elected.” It appears that in Florida, openly racist lesson plans are merely cause for a 10 days suspension and a relocation to a new job within the district.

Jackson County Superintendent Danny Sims acknowledged that Howard gave this lesson plan to more than one class. He was given a written reprimand regarding his actions and required to submit a letter of apology to the students involved. He will also have to undergo diversity and sensitivity training. Wow, I hope that he includes clever acronyms in his letter like S.O.R.R.Y. — Students Offended by Really Racist Yahoos.

Sims feels the punishment is appropriate because the alleged racist diatribe was not directed at any students, but at a political party. Hmmm, calling blacks (like some of his students) the n-word is an attack on a party?

Rest assured, however, that Florida officials got rid of a teacher who took a picture in a bikini as part of a part-time job outside of school, here. It appears that she would have been better off wearing a full KKK robe than a bikini.

  1. How horrible. I would take my children out of that school and sue the system for allowing such a dreadful “nonteacher” to get a paycheck–it is a dreadful misuse of taxpayer dollars.

If I were in charge, I would fire him on the spot. He should be sent to training so that he learns how to keep such reprehensible views out of the classroom and keep his hateful spew to himself.

  2. Isn’t there some way we could just break Florida off the rest of the continent?

I mean, they don’t recognize the laws of our land anyway, as evident by the 2000 elections, so can’t we just sort of just send them off on their own?

  3. At lease he’s just a racist and not a hideous wizard. He didn’t do something really horrible like make a toothpick disappear in front of impressionable children.

No, in Florida education, this is one of those things that might be just a little unfortunate, like voting a 5-year-old autistic child out of class. No real harm done, right?

  4. From the Article:

“As of Thursday, he [Greg Howard] was suspended without pay for 10 days, was relieved of his football coaching duties, and will be transferred to the Jackson County Adult Education program, according to JCSB.”

One has to wonder if his racist bent causes problems in his coaching duties. I am gratified to know however that he will now get to spew his racists comments before adults who can express their displeasure in more effective ways than nervous laughter or milk-toast discipline.

  5. Just another reason to not live in Florida. This is a typical right wing result. When one of their own commits an atrocious act, the public slap on the wrist is the only result. This activity was way beyond insensitivity. The actions were racist and it looks like they are not even trying to hide it anymore. This is evidence of what Obama is facing in his efforts to win the White House.
