Twelve Angry Liberal Jurors: DeLay Slams Austin Jury Pool and Venue

Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) once called the jurors in his recent trial his “brothers and sisters.” His view has changed a bit since they convicted him and he was sentenced to three years. DeLay has been making the talk show circuit and said on “The Today Show” that the jury was a liberal cabal led by a Greenpeace activist.

DeLay stated “I was tried in the most liberal county in the state of Texas and, indeed, in the United States. The foreman of the jury was a Greenpeace activist.” Yet, he added: “So, I’m not criticizing the jury. The point is this is a political campaign.” That does not track completely. They are a bunch of liberals led by a greenie as part of a political campaign, but I am not criticizing them in the least.

There is no question that Austin is extremely liberal — particularly for Texas. I also admit that, if I were representing DeLay, I would not be delighted with the Austin jury pool. However, DeLay’s interview stands in sharp contrast to his statement “I know them like they’re my brothers and sisters.”

  1. DeLay still has mucho power in DC and elsewhere. I am certain if the next president is a Republican, he will be pardoned.

For those of you who need convincing that the so-called justice system too often is injust, go to the Wiki encyclopedia and read about Judge Karl Forester and what he did to Steve Keller’s motion to vacate. I would have been an expert witness testifying on his behalf, if Forester did not reject an evidentiary hearing. His memorandum and order raised my adrenalin and blood pressure. I filed a formal complaint against him with the 6th circuit. This week the first good attorney Keller ever had filed a motion for certificate for appealability. If Forester grants this, I have no doubt the appeals court will see what a fiasco the trial and incarceration have been.

  2. eniobob,

It does ‘attempt’ to bring back some memories, doesn’t it? 🙂

Memory #1: I wonder if George still has that 6 foot copper bong (affectionately known as “The Crippler”)?

  3. BIL,

I thought it was appropriate. These high-profile cases seem to always result in the appellate court ordering a new trial. Hence, “Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends”.

  4. BTW:
Tom don’t go for that “oh I dropped my soap”trick that would be one urban legend that would come true if you do.

  5. BBB:

Kudos on Emerson,Lake &Palmer. You got me looking for “Tie dye shirt and bell bottoms”lol!!

  6. Poor Tom DeLay. He should have gotten more than 3 years. I have just one piece of advice for Mr. DeLay as he prepares to delay further with an appeal… when you get to your special Federal country club, don’t drop the soap.

  7. Republicans,

Did your mom let you get away with “But Tommy was ditching class tooo?”

  8. Why do I get the feeling that this was only the first trial?

  9. Elaine,

Good morning to you … loved the poem … I once had a critic who told me she didn’t like one of the music pieces I performed because it had “too many notes in it”. Honest to god … too many notes!

I knew you’d catch the random thought … I seem to be free-associating this morning and have had to discipline my smart-ass remark generator.

  10. Tom,

    You’ll look great in orange.

And I’m sure if you ask nicely, you can find a dance partner in the slammer too. True, it won’t pay as well as TV, but considering the screwing over you gave the American people, at least your “footwork” will be karmic.

  11. Hammer to the Slammer,he talks really strange. The most liberal jury in America,What?

No Tom” Denial” is not a river LOL!!

  12. Conservatives always call out people for “playing the race card,” but they always play the “persecuted by liberals” card. I don’t see any evidence here, other than the fact that the surrounding area is liberal, indicating that DeLay didn’t get a fair trial. Sore loser I sez…

  13. Blouise,

Tom’s going to be on a new show called Dancing behind the Bars.

I got your meaning. Tom was a former bug exterminator.

  14. Republicans arent the only ones,

“I guess you are right about looks though.”

Not quite sure what you mean by that. Poetry is essentially about rhythm, “sound,” the way a poem reads, and its meaning–not about how a poem looks…unless you’re writing shape or concrete poems.

  15. … though the lunch ladies in Southern Ohio could have used his expertise … (never mind – random thought)

  16. Almost every defendant complains when the jury votes to convict. Some complaints are justified. Tom DeLay’s is not.

  17. Republicans arent the only ones:

“I wouldn’t cast stones like that. I am sure democrats have their share of sex scandals.”

    ***********************

If they do, I can’t find the list. Stones are hard and they should be. That’s a lot to account for from one political party.

  19. Elaine M:

you wrote it, I was just making some suggestions.

I guess you are right about looks though. It would change the poem too much.

I still like my other changes though. Everyone is a critic. Although I agree with your sentiment.
