The Mississippi Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans has come up with an idea for celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War—known to some as the “War between the States.” The veterans group has proposed that the state of
Mississippi issue a series of specialty license plates commemorating the war. These specialty plates, planned for the years 2011 through 2015, would each have a different design.
What has some people upset is the specialty license plate slated for the year 2014, which would honor General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Forrest, a native of Tennessee, is considered by some to have been a military genius. Others feel differently about Forrest who is “reviled” by some for allegedly having lead a massacre of Black Union troops at Fort Pillow in his home state in 1864. It should be noted that Forrest also served as the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
According to ABC News, the NAACP is planning to send a letter to Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour requesting “that he publicly denounce the license plate and use his office to prevent it from being issued.” Derrick Jackson, president of the Mississippi state NAACP, said of Forrest: “He should be viewed in the same light that we view Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. The state of Mississippi should deny any vanity tags which would highlight racial hatred in this state.”
Although many historians agree that Nathan Bedford Forrest distanced himself from the KKK later in his life, some believe “it was too little too late because the Klan had already turned violent before Forrest left.”

Many people in the deep south do not regard it as impolite or rude to use the “n” word or to fly a flag that is offensive to 99% of the non-white population. In the north and western states most of the racism is less out in the open.

I don’t think anyone should say anything in defense of racism. Racists live/have lived in every part of this country. That doesn’t make the racism that exists/has existed in the south any more acceptable. Are you suggesting the racism that is “out in the open” is less racist than racism that is hidden under the surface?

LYNCHING
In the last decades of the nineteenth century, the lynching of Black people in the Southern and border states became an institutionalized method used by whites to terrorize Blacks and maintain white supremacy. In the South, during the period 1880 to 1940, there was deep-seated and all-pervading hatred and fear of the Negro which led white mobs to turn to “lynch law” as a means of social control. Lynchings—open public murders of individuals suspected of crime conceived and carried out more or less spontaneously by a mob—seem to have been an American invention. In Lynch-Law, the first scholarly investigation of lynching, written in 1905, author James E. Cutler stated that “lynching is a criminal practice which is peculiar to the United States.”1
Most of the lynchings were by hanging or shooting, or both. However, many were of a more hideous nature—burning at the stake, maiming, dismemberment, castration, and other brutal methods of physical torture. Lynching therefore was a cruel combination of racism and sadism, which was utilized primarily to sustain the caste system in the South. Many white people believed that Negroes could only be controlled by fear. To them, lynching was seen as the most effective means of control.
There are three major sources of lynching statistics. None cover the complete history of lynching in America. Prior to 1882, no reliable statistics of lynchings were recorded. In that year, the Chicago Tribune first began to take systematic account of lynchings. Shortly thereafter, in 1892, Tuskegee Institute began to make a systematic collection and tabulation of lynching statistics. Beginning in 1912, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People kept an independent record of lynchings.
These statistics were based primarily on newspaper reports. Because the South is so large and the rural districts had not always been in close contact with the city newspapers, it is certain that many lynchings escaped publicity in the press. Undoubtedly, therefore, there are errors and inaccuracies in the available lynching statistics.
The numbers of lynchings listed in each source varies slightly. The NAACP lynching statistics tend to be slightly higher than the Tuskegee Institute figures, which some historians consider “conservative.” For example, in 1914, Tuskegee Institute reported fifty-two lynchings for the year, the “Chicago Tribune” reported fifty-four, and The Crisis, the official organ of the NAACP,gave the number as seventy-four.2 The reason for the discrepancies in these figures is due in part to different conceptions of what actually constituted a lynching, and errors in the figures. According to the Tuskegee Institute figures, between the years 1882 and 1951, 4,730 people were lynched in the United States: 3,437 Negro and 1,293 white.3 The largest number of lynchings occurred in 1892. Of the 230 persons lynched that year, 161 were Negroes and sixty-nine whites.
Contrary to present-day popular conception, lynching was not a crime committed exclusively against Black people. During the nineteenth century a significant minority of the lynching victims were white. Between the 1830s and the 1850s the majority of those lynched in the United States were whites. Although a substantial number of white people were victims of this crime, the vast majority of those lynched, by the 1890s and after the turn of the century, were Black people. Actually, the pattern of almost exclusive lynching of Negroes was set during the Reconstruction period. According to the Tuskegee Institute statistics for the period covered in this study, the total number of Black lynching victims was more than two and one-half times as many as the number of whites put to death by lynching.
Lynchings occurred throughout the United States; it was not a sectional crime. However, the great majority of lynchings in the United States took place in the Southern and border states. According to social economist Gunnar Myrdal: “The Southern states account for nine-tenths of the lynchings. More than two-thirds of the remaining one-tenth occurred in the six states which immediately border the South: Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kansas.”4 Mississippi, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama were the leading lynching states. These five states furnished nearly half the total victims. Mississippi had the highest incidence of lynchings in the South as well as the highest for the nation, with Georgia and Texas taking second and third places, respectively. However, there were lynchings in the North and West. In fact, every state in the continental United States with the exception of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont has had lynching casualties.
Josephine, you miss the point entirely. Southern history is what it is. Lynching and oppression of black people was an integral part of that history. To deny it is to deny the truth. As a southerner myself who has never lived further north than Missouri, I can safely say I know the people and the culture. Way better than most, perhaps. If you will add up the numbers in that list I posted, the vast majority of those 4,743 lynchings were in the deep south. Racism and prejudice exists in every state of the union. I know that and so does everyone else. It is just more open and prevalent in the south.
I know what country I live in, and it certainly is not the CSA. Like many lost causes, the myth far exceeds the reality.
Leave the nineteenth century behind and step into the twenty-first century. There may have been much to like about the nineteenth century, but slavery and oppression of blacks and poor whites is not one of them. This country has many problems that need to be solved. It is much more productive to work on the problems of a failing infrastructure, torture of detainees, runaway corporations that are polluting our waterways and the Gulf of Mexico, and global warming than to worry about re-installing a “nation” that only existed to preserve slavery and the dominance of elite landowners over slaves and poor sharecroppers.

The two links OS posted are not bullshit! There were many, many lynchings of black people in the South. That was how Black people were kept down and prevented from their civil rights by violent men supported by the local political and legal establishment. This happened in my own lifetime. Emmitt Till was lynched for instance for supposedly whistling at a white woman across a street. That was his only offense, as agreed to by even those who participated.
Do you really think this was justified, or that those guilty were let off with no conviction. Is this really where you are coming from?
As to that long list of organizations that you posted, you are aware that many of them are on various FBI and homelands Security Terrorists lists? Without arguing the validity of their positions, because that would take a long thread in and of itself, do you deny that these organizations must be considered anti-American, since that deny our government’s legitimacy? If this is the case, how can any of you claim to be patriots? Our soldiers have died and been maimed in many wars supporting our particular form of government.
Whether the wars were right or wrong they sacrificed themselves for their country, their entire country. These groups and I would assume you believe that your patriotism runs only to the type of country you personally believe in. you may feel justified in your beliefs. Truthfully, it is reasonable for the overwhelming majority of Americans who feel patriotism towards the US as it is constituted, to believe that these groups represent a terrorist element that borders, if not crosses over the line into treason.

You bring up an interesting take on this. Personally, coming from an ancestry of Hungarian Jewish peasants, my family history was only of passing interest to me once it got beyond my grandparents. Since it’s normal to sometimes project ones own predilections onto others, I did not take into account that others may feel differently and why they do. As you suggest for some there is a need to look to their ancestors as a means of measuring their own self-worth.
Certainly this is the case in Brent’s SCV organization who obviously derive comfort and reassurance in the fact that their forbears served in the CW. If this is the case for them and likely it is, it then would assume great importance to them to show their ancestors fought in a glorious cause. This would create a tunnel vision that would only allow them to see that which reinforces their need for an heroic history, even though it is at least two generations past.
I think that this is especially present in the South where a majority of Whites are almost equally downtrodden as Blacks, yet have so bought into the cultural/political memes that they need to comfort themselves with a glorious, yet non-existent past and
a spurious current crusade to restore that glory. The alternative, which would be to see their situations as they really are would be too radical and too painful a step.
Remember Brent’s instant defensive reaction to the photos of lynchings in the south that I posted? “Bull crap.” he said. He blamed the existence of the lynching photos on the Southern Poverty Law Center. I think it highly informative about him that instead of deploring lynching, he simply blames the existence of photos on the SPLC. Nor did he have anything to say about the lynching statistics or the murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till. The silence was deafening regarding the racist comments of his murderer, who could talk freely about the murder after he had been acquitted by a Tallahatchie County jury.

Well we’ve finally flushed –yep that’s the right word — ol’ Brent. He’s a neo-con traitor just like his forefathers. He considers himself an oppressed citizen of an occupied country which gives him something in common with terrorists in Gaza or Iraq or … pick your third world area. He’s bellicose, delusional, and so totally in denial of history or reason that he would make a fundamentalist of the first order. All in all a despicable fellow unworthy of any more of my time.
