In a surprise move for many critics, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed the bill that would have required President Barack Obama and other presidential candidates to prove they were born in the United States before their names could have been placed on the state ballot. We previously discussed the bill and the serious constitutional questions that it raised. A former Secretary of State, Brewer objected to one state imposing such conditions on candidates.
Brewer stated that “[a]s a former Secretary of State, I do not support designating one person as a gatekeeper to the ballot for a candidate, which could lead to arbitrary or politically-motivated decisions. She went on to suggest that some of the conditions were simply demeaning: “I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for President of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their ‘early baptismal or circumcision certificates’ among other records to the Arizona Secretary of State. This is a bridge too far.”
The move saved Arizona the expense of a costly challenge that would have likely resulted in a defeat for Arizona in the courts.
However, thirteen other states are currently considering the same type of legislation. While the veto in Arizona may deter some, this may still become a court battle leading up to the elections.

eniobob,
“Lost tourisim dollars didn’t come into play here with this decision, you think?”
As they say, money talks … but, I think this is the smartest thing The Grim Reaper has done thus far …
BuenaVistaMall, anyone that gets Orly Taitzs panties in a twist tends to be a-ok in my book but I really dislike Jan Brewer… what a conflict 🙂
We wonder what 0bama promised her for selling out our Country.
Lost tourisim dollars didn’t come into play here with this decision, you think? SB 1070 alone has dug deep into the state treasury with the loss convention booking also has fallen,I would imagine wiser heads got involved on passing this law IMHO.

AY, Yes, I expect to get a sternly worded letter from the cockroach lobby chastising me for comparing honest, hard working cockroaches with Arizona politicians.
lottakatz, Thanks for that link. Another sign of the times…
She is listening to the business community.
rcampbell,
“I’m thinking the recall campaign against her, the significant loss of resort and convention revenues to the state and the constant national ridicule (to say nothing of the money being wasted defending the indefensible SR 1070) are having the desired affect.”
I believe you’re right. I serve on the Poetry Committee of the National Council of Teachers of English. The council had originally arranged for its 2012 annual convention to be held in Arizona. After passage of the immigration law, the council changed the convention venue to Las Vegas.

Light on the cockroaches, indeed. Perhaps the unfavorable press AZ has received (laughing stock isn’t be far from reality) since Brewer, State Senator Pearce and his mad horde of Republicans began their assault on the Constitution is finally taking a toll. Brewer has now back tracked on dropping 280,000 poor people, including organ transplant patients, from the state’s health care system and vetoed these two ridiculous bills.
She’s never been given high points for being politically agile or clever–or even bright. Nor has she previously delved into nuances or considered the consequences of a law. I’m thinking her reasoning and justifications for these new stances is more blunt ended. I’m thinking the recall campaign against her, the significant loss of resort and convention revenues to the state and the constant national ridicule (to say nothing of the money being wasted defending the indefensible SR 1070) are having the desired affect.
Lol, when Jan Brewer is the one politician acting responsibly in your state government there’s a serious problem with your state government. Arizona politicians and Jan Brewer look pretty amateurish and petty compared to some of the state Governor’s back east.
Michigan has exercised it’s emergency powers to take control of a city, appoint an emergency manager, nullify the duties of the elected officials and pave the way for a massive property rip-off that benefits a locally powerful business group. Here’s the Maddow vid. Jan needs to take lessons from Rick Snyder to see how real corruption is played:

Elaine M.,
An emphatic “yes”… (The mere idea of it leaves me shaking my head…)
anon nurse,
One has wonder why any parents would want their children attending a college or university in a state where guns were legally allowed on campus, doesn’t one?
Elaine M.
Well, today, you beat ME to the punch… More info in your link. Thanks.
Well this clears up one thing at least. It puts Gov Brewer clearly in the “evil” camp. If she were on team “stupid” she would have signed the bill because she believed in it. Given that she has shown she is smart enough to see the thing is a bad joke gone horribly wrong it can be assumed most of the noise coming out of her is based on trying to dupe the stupid into voting for her.

She also vetoed legislation that would have allowed individuals to carry weapons on college campuses in the state.
Concerning the weapons bill, the Daily Sun reports Gov. Brewer vetoed it because she declared it was “poorly written.” The measure would have allowed persons to carry weapons in the public rights of way going through college campuses, but the governor said the bill never defines what those “public rights of way” are.p

Brewer vetoes bill allowing guns on campus right of ways

Excerpt:
In her veto letter, Brewer — typically a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and gun rights — called the bill “poorly written” and said it lacked clarity.
“Bills impacting our Second Amendment rights have to be crystal clear so that gun owners don’t become lawbreakers by accident,” Brewer said.
The measure, sponsored by Sen. Ron Gould, R-Lake Havasu City, would have required community colleges and universities to allow both concealed and openly carried weapons in their public rights of way, which would likely include public roads and adjacent sidewalks.
But it didn’t clearly define “right of way,” which Brewer cited as an example of the bill’s lack of clarity.
The governor also questioned the use of “educational institution” throughout the bill, which she said could be construed to mean applying to K-12, which would conflict with existing state and federal statutes that prohibit weapons on those school grounds.
Gould said he was surprised by the aggressive nature of the governor’s statement.
“I thought it was a very rude veto letter,” Gould said, adding that he thought “her spin on it … is a stretch.” He was referencing her remarks about how it could potentially affect K-12 schools.
Faculty organizations at all three of Arizona’s public universities passed resolutions opposing SB 1467, and campus law enforcement testified against it.
“Guns have no place in schools,” said Arizona State University President Michael Crow, when asked about the legislation at a recent student forum on ASU’s Polytechnic campus
OS,
Now, now….they are going to say that you are guilty of ethic intimidation…they is family after all…
AY, there is nothing that will send cockroaches scurrying faster than to turn on the light.
