Ensign Announces Resignation From Senate Due To On-Going Investigation Into Affair

Two-term Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., has announced he is resigning from the Senate, effective May 3rd. This follows a prior pledge to remain in the Senate and a rather forced defense that he had not “done anything legally wrong” after he allegedly had an affair with the wife of his top staffer, Doug Hampton.

Ensign insisted that “[f]or my family and me, this continued personal cost is simply too great” in fighting the allegations, including a Senate ethics investigation.

For his part, Doug Hampton says that his life was ruined by Ensign and he now faces jail time after being convicted on seven counts of violating the one-year lobbying ban imposed on senior congressional staffers. The charges include the use of Ensign to set up a meeting in 2009 with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on behalf of Allegiant Air, a Las Vegas airline. Hampton faces a potential sentence of five years and is now represented by a public defender. Ensign’s staff have leaked that Doug Hampton demanded a an exorbitant” amount of money from Ensign.

Ensign ran on the fact that he was a born-again Christian and a Senator who brought Christian values to the Senate Indeed, even when asking Doug Hampton to come with him as his chief of staff, it was put in religious terms as not just a longtime friend but a brother in Christ. Hampton explained in one interview: “The intimacy of our relationship, the longevity, would be important for John as he continued to grow in political stature. And he asked me to come on to join him in Washington,” Hampton said. “Walk alongside in whatever capacity possible. … Same kind of model that Jesus exhibited in the Bible.” Ensign was living at the C Street House, a meeting place run by the secretive fundamentalist Christian organization known as the Fellowship.

Even after a confrontation with Ensign and his wife, Doug Hampton insisted that the affair continued and that Ensign continued to call his wife “day and night.”

Cindy Hampton and Darlene Ensign had been friends in high school. In one reunion yearbook in 2001, Cindy is quoted as writing “Doug and I just celebrated our 13th anniversary.Life is awesome and we are truly blessed.” Darlene Ensign is quoted as writing, “We have been very committed to our family and Christ. It’s been a great rollercoaster ride so far!” The latter may be the greatest understatement of the whole affair.

Ultimatley, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics (CREW) in Washington, demanded the Senate investigate whether Ensign is guilty of sexual harassment. The investigation included the allegations that Ensign set up Hampton as a lobbyist to hush up the affair. Ensign’s wealthy parents also reportedly gave Hampton a large amount of money.

Hampton has never sought a civil action against Ensign for a claim such as “alienation of affection.” I believe that Nevada does not have an alienation of affection rule — for good reason given fact that Las Vegas is within the state.

  1. @ Geeba Geeba
My problem with the Ensign affair was the fact that he was having fooling around with an employee and was being blackmailed by her & the husband. If some politco was to fool around then fool around just don’t do it with an employee, sexual harassment, and don’t pay the hush money.

  2. John Ensign is a creep and a hypocrite. If you are going to talk the Christian Jesus way of life, you need to walk the walk. He not only cheated on his wife, he then allegedly paid the husband off by getting him a job in DC! Isn’t the Fellowship also called the “Family”? If I am correct, who is he referring to in his statement? His family or the “Family”?

  3. So what else is new? I assert that 20% of any group of people have been unfaithful to their spouse, partner, or significant spit-swapper of choice. Here I define infidelity as any physical contact enacted with the intent to arouse a carnal pleasure by the one initiating the contact. I’m not just talking about the obvious “non-sexual” touching like the foot massages Jules Winnfield discusses in “Pulp Fiction”. It’s the touching the knee, leg, caressing the hair, putting a finger on the lips, and similar acts. Be real, all men are after a dose, no matter how small, of the poon of tang. Your psyche gets the satisfaction of some type of “score”. Admit it. Deal with it. If not this then how many of us get some other type of … self directed relief … with someone else in mind? Now the percentage of malfeasance goes way up (up. HA!)

So don’t be so holier-than-thou yourself people. As for people who run on a platform of family values only to break them, then shame on them. But how about a guy that runs on a platform as being the hope and dreams of everyone … and not be the answer? One who says that those under a certain income level will not see any tax increase at all in any form, only to renege? One who will close Guantanamo but doesn’t. One who says that you can keep your doctor if you want to. One who states that a Pres does not have the Constitutional right to go into an Iraq type war without congressional approval but does so himself anyway? Is this type of infidelity to the American people not more harmful to the people than a guy who’s boffing someone he shouldn’t be? And they want to put an investigation together on this? Please! I say we have a lot more urgent needs we need to get together on than this drivel.

  4. They always stick around long enough to use their resignation as a bargaining chip.

Behind the scenes, Ensign has cut some kind of deal. We’ll find out what it was in a few months.

  5. Remember when the GOP stood for balanced budgets, individual freedom and isolationism.

The Republican Party has run up these deficits, we want the federal government to be in our bedrooms and between our women and their doctors, we started two wars instead of ending them like the Korean War and were supposed to stop the Vietnam War the Democrats started. We have lost our way!

So why waste our time with these fools who use their racist rhetoric, like this Marilyn Davenport and Donald Trump with his birther unproven myth, why keep Ensign, why do we allow our Fox news people to keep talking down our country. Don’t they know we can win the next election with optimism and hope instead of the current rhetoric, that the sky is falling, if we are not careful we will end up like chicken little where no one will listen to us.

  6. Now why was Mr. Jones in Dearborn. Michigan other than provoke a good clean fight….. because they started it I am sure….well…it looks like Mr. Jone could face a 5 year felony…..

Just like Mr. Ensign….. I suppose he could claim accidental discharge….

  7. Sarthmore mom,

Thanks for that link–which took me to this link:

Quran-Burning Pastor’s Gun Accidentally Goes Off In Michigan

Just when you thought the sad saga of Quran-burning Florida pastor Terry Jones couldn’t get more absurd…

According to Southfield, Michigan police, Jones’ .40-caliber handgun fired accidentally as he was leaving a television studio there on Thursday night. This is presumably the same handgun he said he intended to bring to his planned anti-sharia law protest in Dearborn, Michigan on Friday, though he’s said he’s come to Dearborn “totally in peace.”

Police told The Detroit Free Press that Jones was getting into the passenger side of his car at 11:10 p.m. Thursday night, after an interview at the TV station, when the gun went off, putting a bullet into the floorboard.

  8. Elaine,

True that, but I follow the maxim that the best way to lead is by positive example and the best way to be the butt of a joke is to attempt to lead by negative example.

  9. Buddha,

Are you implying that John “The Promise Keeper” Ensign is two-faced?

Isn’t it usually the “holier than thou” guys who prove themselves to be the least moral/ethical among us?

  10. In the first comment puzzling wrote: “The sheer scale of the hypocrisy that a typical politician is capable of staggers the mind.”

The unfathomable stupidity of Americans that elect these “Elmer Gantries” Christians one after another is what truly boggles the mind.

  11. Ensign was a “Promise Keeper.”

Check out the promises that he was supposed to have kept:

    1. A Promise Keeper is committed to honoring Jesus Christ through worship, prayer and obedience to God’s Word in the power of the Holy Spirit.

    2. A Promise Keeper is committed to pursuing vital relationships with a few other men, understanding that he needs brothers to help him keep his promises.

    3. A Promise Keeper is committed to practicing spiritual, moral, ethical, and sexual purity.

    4. A Promise Keeper is committed to building strong marriages and families through love, protection and biblical values.

    5. A Promise Keeper is committed to supporting the mission of his church by honoring and praying for his pastor, and by actively giving his time and resources.

    6. A Promise Keeper is committed to reaching beyond any racial and denominational barriers to demonstrate the power of biblical unity.

    7. A Promise Keeper is committed to influencing his world, being obedient to the Great Commandment (see Mark 12:30-31) and the Great Commission (see Matthew 28:19-20).

  12. $1,400.00. “In 2010, the C Street Center paid more than $ 1,400 in penalties and interest.”

  13. “Ensign was living at the C Street House, a meeting place run by the secretive fundamentalist Christian organization known as the Fellowship.”

So Ensign, one of the residents of the C Street house, is back in the news.

On November 17, 2009, Josh Marshall’s site TPM reported its story that “C Street House No Longer Tax Exempt” by Zachary Roth.

It reported that a ”commenter using the name Vince Treacy, posting on a blog run by George Washington Law professor Jonathan Turley, noted in June that the property enjoyed tax exempt status.”

The property tax exemption was revoked, and C
Street began paying taxes, but could not get their checks in the mail on time. The payments were late.

Now the commenter using the name Vince Treacy is back to report that Ensign’s C Street house is once again behind in its property tax payments, to the tune of $5,362.35 as of April 17, 2011.

You can look it up for yourselves:

Search Real Property Assessment Database, Assessment Roll Search as of 04/17/2011

C STREET CENTER INC, Mailing Address: 133 C ST SE; WASHINGTON DC 20003-1807

Tax Amount Balance As of Date
    Real Property $5,362.34 04/17/2011
*The outstanding amounts displayed here may not include updated penalty and interest.

In 2010, the C Street Center paid more than $ ,400 in penalties and interest.

These are the guys who preach fiscal responsibility and personal financial prudence, and propose massive budget cuts for the poor, but can’t even pay their own taxes on time, after claiming an invalid religious property tax exemption for years.

FLASHBACK: Ensign Called On Clinton To Resign After Admitting Affair — ‘He Has No Credibility Left’

The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza reports that Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), a member of GOP leadership and a potential candidate for president in 2012, will hold a press conference later today in which he will acknowledge having an extramarital affair “with a campaign staffer who was married to an employee in Ensign’s Senate office.” Ensign flew back to Las Vegas to make the public announcement.

Yo John the Baby Momma’s calling …she’s needing more greens for the baby making machine….

This take you to the Huffpo link…..

Now who was it that he blasted for the same type of scandals…..the roots run deep….
