Warrant Issued For Arrest of California Professor For Allegedly Urinating On Door Of Colleague

San Fernando police have issued an arrest warrant for California State University Professor Tihomir Petrov after a hidden camera reportedly captured him urinating on the door of a colleague in the math department.

The university set up a hidden camera after they found what they believed to be puddles of urine outside of the colleague’s door. Petrov was having a dispute with the other professor.

This week, Petrov failed to appear at a hearing and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

He is being sought on two charges of two misdemeanor counts of urinating in public.

Petrov, 43, specializes in algebraic geometry and algebraic k-theory. He received his B.S. in 1995 from Moscow State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in New York University in 1999 and 2002 respectively.

In one article, his counsel Arvand Naderi stated “[Petrov] is of course concerned that this might affect future employment.” That is a pretty safe bet. It is not publish or piddle.

While only misdemeanors, the university has independent grounds to remove the assistant professor. This is a state university so he presumably does not have tenure.

  1. The school seems to follow the standard title formula of “assistant professor” (pre-tenure review or non-tenure-track positions for people with a doctorate), “associate professor” (tenure granted), and “full professor” (or just Professor, a promotion and raise from associate.)

State universities have tenure just like private universities. I don’t know if the conditions are the same or not.

“I think, therefore I pee in the woods.”

    That is hilarious!

  3. Mespo,
Great clip. I forgot about that slap on the Letterman show!
This posting proves my point that there was a very good reason why I hate math!

  4. “Plus, the philosophy department always smelled better than the mathematics department.”

I always noticed that at my schools as well.

  5. You will note that Prof. Petrov’s specialty is algebraic geometry. I suspect he was having a dispute with a colleague over the properties of parabolic trajectories and was attempting a physical demonstration. However, his jealous rage got the best of him and he was only able to produce what mathematicians call the arc of the covetous.

But this is one of the reasons I majored in philosophy. Were a philosophy professor to encounter a colleague engaging in Prof. Petrov’s juvenile conduct, he would not search for a similarly uncouth response. Instead, he would say something along the lines of, “Cogito, ergo in silvam mio,” or “I think, therefore I pee in the woods.” Plus, the philosophy department always smelled better than the mathematics department.

  6. Reminds me of that scene is Seinfeld when George is caught having sex with the cleaning woman on his desk. He asks his boss: “Is that sort of thing frowned upon?… Was there a memo?”

Maybe this guy was never informed that urinating on a colleague’s door was against university policy. Check the handbook.

  7. Who knows, maybe in a verbal exchange someone told the professor to go piss off…and he did.

  8. He was actually just setting up a pun, he was going to pee on that door everyday until the colleague happened to walk by, when he’d say “I was just checking to see if urine there.”

  9. “He received his B.S. in 1995 from Moscow State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in New York University in 1999 and 2002 respectively.”

    Correction: Petrov has a Pee-h.D.

  10. Some people piss and moan about how much they hate their jobs more than others.

  11. Hey, if all I had to do was crunch numbers allday I’d be pissed too….
