This might be a face only a Deputy Prosecutor could love. Reportedly so much that Spokane County Deputy Prosecutor Marriya Wright is now facing charges of Rendering Criminal Assistance in the First Degree and having a curious incident where she is alleged to have passed to a jail inmate a picture of herself posing in a bikini.
Convicted felon Matthew Baumrucker described in a letter to KREM News as a “Cinderella Story” of a relationship between a couple from the opposite side of the tracks and the law.
During the time when Matthew was a fugitive from justice, having an outstanding arrest warrant, Spokane Police Detectives allege that Marriya and Matthew exchanged over 1,200 text messages after they pinged his cell phone in an attempt to locate and apprehend him on an arrest warrant for drug possession and for investigation in an assault case.
An unsealed document revealed that during the time that Matthew was wanted, witnesses stated he contacted Marriya asking for help in avoiding arrest. KREM reported security video showed two, who investigators believe is Marriya and Matthew in her red SUV during the time he was wanted by authorities. Records showed she gave Matthew and one of his friends a ride to a trailer in the Spokane Valley during the time he was on the run. Witnesses told detectives they heard Marriya tell Matthew to “take care of his warrants,” but they say Marriya never made an attempt to turn him over to police according to court documents.
Once authorities located and arrested Matthew, Marriya seemed to not be able to resist staying in touch.
Jail staff became suspicious when Marriya visited Matthew ten times within a month. It was highly unusual for a Deputy Prosecutor to visit an inmate this many times. She listed the reason for the visit as “Professional” and staff provided her access to an attorney-client cell where documents could be passed between them.
The tryst culminated with a corrections officer allegedly witnessing Marriya provide Matthew with a photograph of her in a bikini. A search warrant located the photograph.
Marriya is on administrative leave. Her duties with the prosecutor’s office formerly included prosecution of property crimes not public representation of criminal defendants. Reportedly the FBI is also investigating the incident.
This Cinderella story obviously will not have a happy ending.

From everything I can see on the web about Marriya, she is not lonely. The bodybuilding contests, social media connections.
She failed the lust test of her own desires and self control. When Marriya went into this career track, there are professional codes of conduct.
She should have hooked up with a young country yuppie lawyer, equally yoked for dating or 1 a night stand.
That is an amazing story Darren. I think a career change is in order!

The sex must have been really, really good. This story is not the first of its kind. I’ve seen similar stories elsewhere, and inevitably, they involve an attractive, well-educated woman and a tatted-up bad boy. It seems to be a thing among young women – looking for a bad boy (or someone who can pretend to be a bad boy) rather than looking for a traditional mate with a good career, sort of boring life, etc. It’s a fantasy romance.
Remember that good looking perp a few months ago whose photo garnered a lot of publicity? You know, the felon who received offers of modeling jobs and offers of love? That guy? He received thousands of letters from eager women while he was incarcerated. Go figure.
When I was single and looking for dates and a mate, “tattooed felon” wasn’t on the list of traits I hoped to find in a woman. It wasn’t on the list at all, though the tattooed part would have been okay, depending.
Squeeky, With that very real empathy expressed let me take a fatherly approach and say, “NO BIKINIS TO INMATES, GIRL!!
Samantha Lowrey, Lighten up! When a new person arrives w/ a chip on their shoulder it raises a red flag. However, I will play it straight and give some perspective.
This is a legal blog but it is more than just analysis of civil, criminal, etc. cases. Jonathan has posts concerning quirky cases like this as well as posts that have nothing to do w/ the law. This blog has a sense of humor and isn’t pretentious. On weekends, VOLUNTEEERS do posts to give JT a break. Darren is a valuable asset and brings a unique perspective, being a former cop. Additionally, Darren would be the likely person to retrieve your comment from the wordpress dungeon were it to be eaten by spam. I always encourage a new person to read some of the archives here to understand the drill. If you take the time to do so, you’ll understand better what I just said. You will see the wonderfully eclectic nature of this forum. Your response, or lack of one, will tell me much.
Oh with a name like Baumrucker the Irish Poem possibilites are staggering. Bite my tongue. Bite my tongue.
