Not So Fast: Obama Administration Waits Until Election Eve To Dump Over 64,000 Pages In Fast and Furious Operation

holdereric260px-capitol_building_full_viewThe Justice Department has previously been held in contempt by Congress and hit with increasingly tough court orders from a federal judge over its obstruction of efforts to secure evidence in the notorious Fast and Furious operation. Many have accused Attorney General Eric Holder of acting blatantly political in withholding documents to protect Democrats from backlash before the elections. As if to prove that view, the Justice Department waited until late on election eve to finally dump more than 64,000 pages of documents congressional lawmakers have been seeking for years. The timing was almost taunting in its impact. Guaranteeing that the content could not be viewed before people voted, the Obama Administration’s long obstruction resulted in this troubling image of a politically timed release. The Administration previously admitted that it would not discuss its plans for unilateral immigration action until after voters had gone home from the polls.

The election eve dump to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee involved 64,280 pages withheld for years by the Obama Administration.

The Justice Department has made a series of statements about the operation that proved false and Holder has been personally accused of false statements.

The document dump contains heavily redacted copies which will likely continue the fight over the right of the oversight committee to review the evidence in the operation.

  1. Nick, yep, The LBJ ranch is in Kerrville. The area is pretty but gets very very hot in the summer and once you get out of Austin you are back in republican territory with a capital “R”. They are yapping about Obama all the time. Wasn’t always like that………..

  2. SWM, I drove through it on my way to visit my sister in Austin. Seems like the LBJ ranch was nearby?

  3. Precisely SWM ( your 10:34), but what the heck makes them believe Republicans will do those things?!

    1. Annie – right now the Republicans do not have enough votes in the Senate to override an Obama veto, so all they can do is send stuff to Obama and have him veto it.

  4. Been to Fredericksburg a few times. It is right in the middle the hill country outside of Austin. That area is the best part of the state.

  5. @swm

Obama is the one who said his policies were on the ballot. Personally, I am not even sure what his policies are except for granting amnesty to the Mexicans. I love his statement today about bringing the best and brightest foreigners to America. With the Mexicans, I think we are just bringing the best swimmers to our country.

  6. Squeeky, Nailed it. We’re talking German Americans. I stumbled upon the town of Fredericksburg, TX. in one of my sojourns west. I think it’s generally in your neck of the woods. Very German town and proud of it. Near the Hill Country from what I remember.

  7. I don’t think they rejected Obama’s policies as much as the lack of implementation of them. The voters clearly do not want personhood. They do want a minimum wage, marijuana and immigration reform. The exit polls in most states did not reflect a desire for a conservative agenda but rather a desire to get something done.

  8. @NickS

Oh, I loved Obama’s body language in his press conference today! It was obvious that he was sooo po’ed at America for rejecting his policies. I think the size of the loss really surprised him. Even the press was feisty with him today, and Chris Matthews’s leg has stopped tingling:

    Made clear his rejection,

  9. Not that old….. but my kids said they are glad I am not one of those fussy old anti- gay marriage republicans. 🙂

  10. SWM ~ We might be old but at least we are not republicans.

    My sentiments exactly!

Don’t forget the drool on the slack side of the mouth. 🙂

  11. SWM,Udall and Wyden are righteous on civil liberties, particularly the NSA which is my big concern. But, both have been very timid, since they don’t want to upset their guy. But, they know what the NSA is doing is unconstitutional

Regarding your discussion on German food. I just spent several days in Southern Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee and northern Alabama. There are a good number of Germans in that area. Werner von Braun felt more comfortable in Huntsville than he did in El Paso, which is where the US intelligence folks put him right after the war. He hated El Paso. But he spent a couple happy decades in Huntsville building rockets. I ate @ a superb German restaurant that has been in Evansville, Indiana for over 100 years. The Gerst Haus is a classic place. I went w/ the weiner schnitzel and it was very good. There is what looks to be an authentic German bakery, Karl’s German Bakery, in Daleville, Alabama. Their specialty is German bread[which they ship] but they also make pastries. From what I glean from my travels and research, there are German-Americans in a pocket from central Indiana south, including Tennessee and Alabama. Memphis has a good German heritage. I put past vitriol aside when it comes to food. You can convey the info w/o attribution if you are so inclined.

  12. Annie, Ted Cruz plans to hold a lot more hearings but he doesn’t care about NSA just ACA.

  13. SWM,
Exactly, makes me wonder if all that talk about overreach and spying was just lip service by the Republicans. They have no intention of doing things any differently of they go a Republican President, than they criticized Obama for and held those hearings over. I wonder if is Jill happy they got the Senate? I wonder how she thinks things will be better now?

Paulette, wouldn’t it be amazing if Udall did just that? I hope he does.

  14. Pogo
When Obama swept into office there was a majority in both chambers… The promise of HOPE brought us CHANGE in a GOP majority six years later. Broccoli is better, indeed, and healthier too!

    1. Max-1 – please Max. My wife has me on a broccoli diet. There is a limit.

  15. SWM ~

There’s nothing civil about restricting the rights of others.

Perhaps Udall, the stalwart transparency advocate, will be brave enough to follow in the footsteps of former Senator Mike Gravel who, after his defeat, read the Pentagon Papers into the record. That will be the only way ‘we the people’ will ever get to see the report on the CIA torture program.
