The video below has caused a public outcry after a South Carolina school resource officer identified as Richland County Sheriff’s Department Senior Deputy Ben Fields is shown tossing a female high school student to the floor and dragging her from a classroom after she refused to get up and leave with him. Fields has been placed on paid administrative leave.
Fields, shown right from a Twitter photo, was reportedly called in because the student would not get off her cellphone or leave the class as instructed. The 15-second video shows Fields asking the student “Are You Coming With Me or am I Going to Make You? Come on. I’m going to get you up.” What follows is the scuffle where the student ends up on the floor and being pulled by Fields. Fields is heard saying “I’ll put you in jail next.”
The site Heavy has reported that Fields in the subject of a lawsuit alleging violations of the civil rights of a student at Spring Valley High School. The student, Ashton James Reese, was expelled in 2013 from the high school for “unlawful assembly of gang activity and assault and battery” and was also accused of participating in a “gang related” fight in a Walmart parking lot near the school. In the lawsuit, he is accused of “recklessly target[ing] African-American students with allegations of gang membership and criminal gang activity.”
The Columbia mayor has denounced Fields and said “We cannot and will not accept this kind of behavior from any law enforcement officer and I firmly believe that we need an independent investigation to get to the bottom of this incident and see that justice is done.”
Given that this was all about cellphone use, is there any justification for this level of force in your view?
I am not the one making assertions. I am merely pointing out facts and wondering why some things were said, and other things not said. That’s deductive, logical thinking. If someone CONSTANTLY mention their family, and then plays victim when someone else asks a LOGICAL question about said family, that is troubling.
Also, if Karen has a television she can see the video on TV, it’s been played over and over all day long.
Spinelli, there was no reason to bring my brother into the conversation simply because I stated the cop was troubled. This is another example of the leaps you make. Because I didn’t bring up my brother, you make up some “scenario” about it? Why did YOU bring my brother into the conversation Spinelli? My guess is you were trying to once again make some assertion that is unfounded. Why is my private life and that of my family so interesting to you? Focus on your own family and leave my family and myself alone.
“if you think his excessive use of force is normal”
Whether or not the use of force was excessive has not yet been determined.
“This cop has been in trouble before”
Your definition of “in trouble” in this case is not clear.
Would someone please free my comment to Rick? There i nothing bad in it, other than the intellectual beating I am giving him.
Sorry about that, Rick!
Inga, So you assert this cop is troubled. You assert your brother was a Milwaukee cop who dealt w/ troubled cops. But, you assert you saw no reason to bring up your brother?? Thanks for clearing that up.
KCF, if you think his excessive use of force is normal, then I seriously question your judgment. This cop has been in trouble before, several people have mentioned it on this thread and it’s all over the news outlets.
Karen, my wishing you to be part of harem was just my feeling that your obsession with all things islamic was from an unspoken desire to be dominated by a dashing, rough and gentle at times Arabian prince.
If am wrong, and you are certain that isn’t what you want, then forgive me.
meanwhile, I sure do hope you will start caring for women of all stripes from now on, especially black women, not just the muslim women you care so much about.
If only you would condemn what this cop did to this young girl without reservation…it would be so much more fitting for a defender of women’s rights!
philat, Kudos to your sister for teaching in the inner city. Great teachers can do well in virtually any setting. I have seen some great ones in inner city schools. I have seen many more loser teachers in tough schools.
The other issue is the teacher’s union make it so the worst teachers are often sent to the inner city schools. I would be willing to pay extra taxes[ that’s right, I said EXTRA taxes] to incentivize the best teachers go to the toughest schools. That would mean paying them extra, something the union would never allow.
Annie says:
“You make so many assumptions about people you DO NOT KNOW.”
This was followed immediately by:
“The cop is obviously troubled, his excessive use of force is not normal.”
You can’t make this stuff up.
Rick
Meanwhile disruptive students will be further empowered (particularly in low performing schools) increasing their negative impact on others’ education.

haha..rick, when will you have the self awareness of realizing that you are guilty exactly of what you accuse others (me) of?
your tendency is to assume much based on what people do not say, accuse them of it, then use your misreading comprehension to challenge them to prove something they never claimed! man, you are exhausting!
Left-wing privilege? Based on your process, you will have to back that argument up or we are simply going to disregard everything you said as being fundamentally flawed.
Where have I said anything about left leaning tendencies or anything that would reveal such bias?
And if your whole issue with my argument is based on my use of the word epidemic to describe the high rate of sexual assault on campus, then, friend, you don’t have an argument to begin with. Rather than focus on one word out of hundreds, focus on attacking my idea, the content of my argument, not its form.
If it makes you feel better, I am merely using it the same way it has been widely used:

Po,
I looked at the comment in moderation and the reason it went there is because it has three hyperlinks. You might not have been aware, but this website only allows two hyperlinks per comment. I dereferenced the last one to make it work for you.
If you would like the readers to see more than two links, this can be accomplished by using additional comments with two or less within each.
Thanks, Darren.
“None of us knows what is going on in the rest of her life….”
Everyone has an excuse.
“The teacher clearly lacks some tools and skills in dealing with her students.”
Clearly? Based on this half minute video with no teacher interaction at all?
You know nothing about the background to the incident nor anything about the teacher or what was tried.
“…it’s obvious the cop lacks either training or self restraint.”
Not obvious.
I advise waiting for this to be adjudicated, and the final report comes back before making such a pronouncement.
Your tendency toward snap judgements however is duly noted.
Spinelli, there was no reason to bring up my brother. If a good reason to bring him up was presented I certainly would’ve brought him into the discussion. You make so many assumptions about people you DO NOT KNOW. I brought up my two youngest children to make a point about a single mother being able to effectively raise their children to be successful adults. I don’t understand your insatiable need to make assumptions and assertions about strangers on the internet. It’s intrusive and rude.
The cop is obviously troubled, his excessive use of force is not normal.

If you are having difficulty viewing videos due to the nature of your internet condition you might try the following. I suspect what could be happening is that your network suffers from irregular transmission rates which might confuse the media player as to what it thinks your speed is, therefore it switches between overestimation and underestimation due to an inconsistent metric.
Most media players or web browsers use what is referred to as Buffering to smooth out any stop & go of video or audio playback. How this is basically accomplished is for the application to make an estimate, based on what it perceives to be the network’s throughput, then pausing the browser for a few moments during initial playback while it downloads a sufficient amount of video data before playing the medium for the user. Ideally it will buffer enough data ahead of time so that the user does not see interruptions because the media player arrived at the end of available data and stopped while it waited to download more. Usually, network traffic is intermittent and variable, even to a small degree, the buffering prevents the user from seeing this.
If you have a satellite uplink with low bandwidth video buffering can become problematic. In simplistic terms the amount of data required to watch the video for say one second is greater than the download speed, or insufficient to meet this requirement immediately. The software can easily get confused by this type of data link because satellite internet is more vulnerable to atmospheric conditions which causes packet loss and requires your network card to tell the sender it did not receive the data. So if the satellite has the opportunity to send many frames of clear data, it might trick the buffering software to believe a clear signal is being maintained so it doesn’t buffer as much data for if the signal then degrades and not as much data is presented to the media player which then runs out of pre-loaded data and stops. Satellites are also subject to lag due to the distance for which the satellite is from the earth.
One way you might try to mitigate this problem that should meet with better success in watching the entire video uninterrupted would be to click on a video link, wait until the media player or webpage loads up and the moment it starts “playing” click on the [ || ] pause button. That will halt the playing of the medium but will allow the buffering to continue. Most players have either a gray or blue line at the bottom of the player you will see advancing to the right which will signify that it is filling the buffer with data. When this reaches the end, you should be able to play the entire video / audio segment without interruption or delay. Note that the [Stop] button might both halt the media playback and the buffering so do not use this function to fill the buffer.
Hope this helps.
Let’s restate some of the obvious.
This girl clearly has something going on regarding authority and respect.
None of us knows what is going on in the rest of her life, and before anyone comments that it doesn’t or shouldn’t matter, well, don’t be an idiot.
The teacher clearly lacks some tools and skills in dealing with her students. My sister was an inner-city teacher for 30 years, and is a tiny woman, maybe 90 lbs soaking wet. Many of her students were twice her size and had problems ranging from fetal alcohol syndrome to various psychoses, to every other disorder and syndrome you can name. She always managed her classroom without violence, without disrespect.
Finally it’s obvious the cop lacks either training or self restraint. He apparently has several previous complaints about him. He needs retraining or a different job.
philat – it is almost impossible for a cop to be involved in an altercation without be sued.
I truly didn’t have a point, Inga. I am a professional observer of human behavior. You used to often bring up your brother, as you do your children. You abruptly stopped mentioning you had a brother who reportedly was a Milwaukee cop. In this thread you mentioned 2 kids, but not your brother. It’s curious. As I have said many times, you can often learn much more by what people don’t say than by what they do say. Finally, judging a cop as “troubled” by a 15 second video is something any intelligent person would find disturbing, making the accuser likely “troubled” themselves.
The student is responsible for her actions. Whatever happens after the officer comes in the room was caused by the students actions. She was not following directions from the teacher, assistant principal or the officer. Her “EDUCATIONAL ENTITLEMENT WAS CANCELED. If she is receiving any government assistance, that should be cancelled also.
Maybe the teacher should have called the parent to come and take control of her…Also didn’t see the teacher stopping the officer did the teacher just want her out of the class? What do you do when one misbehaves and doesn’t follow instructions. Tax money going to control kids rather than teaching.
Jeannie – the reason the teacher did not stop the officer is that there was an administrator in the room and he is the one who had called the resource officer. Once the administrator got there, the teacher was out of the loop for this situation.
…but cops should never be in schools.”
You haven’t been in the inner city schools lately then.
And Spinelli, I’m very proud of my family. I’m sure many people would love to have great family like mine.
