South Carolina Officer Placed On Administrative Leave After Violent Arrest At School Is Posted On YouTube

Screen Shot 2015-10-27 at 7.13.14 AMThe video below has caused a public outcry after a South Carolina school resource officer identified as Richland County Sheriff’s Department Senior Deputy Ben Fields is shown tossing a female high school student to the floor and dragging her from a classroom after she refused to get up and leave with him. Fields has been placed on paid administrative leave.

benfieldsFields, shown right from a Twitter photo, was reportedly called in because the student would not get off her cellphone or leave the class as instructed. The 15-second video shows Fields asking the student “Are You Coming With Me or am I Going to Make You? Come on. I’m going to get you up.” What follows is the scuffle where the student ends up on the floor and being pulled by Fields. Fields is heard saying “I’ll put you in jail next.”

The site Heavy has reported that Fields in the subject of a lawsuit alleging violations of the civil rights of a student at Spring Valley High School. The student, Ashton James Reese, was expelled in 2013 from the high school for “unlawful assembly of gang activity and assault and battery” and was also accused of participating in a “gang related” fight in a Walmart parking lot near the school. In the lawsuit, he is accused of “recklessly target[ing] African-American students with allegations of gang membership and criminal gang activity.”

The Columbia mayor has denounced Fields and said “We cannot and will not accept this kind of behavior from any law enforcement officer and I firmly believe that we need an independent investigation to get to the bottom of this incident and see that justice is done.”

Given that this was all about cellphone use, is there any justification for this level of force in your view?

  1. Fleming: Your views are exceptionally ugly and bear all the hallmarks of complete ignorance and you do it all with such utter smarm.

Your comments on these threads have contributed to the denigration of this blog.

Your by no means alone, but your participation here perfectly illustrates the brutish and ugliness of the conservative right-wing mentality

    It’s what she does.
    It’s who she is.

  3. “He tipped over the desk …

Your interpretation of the video is biased and almost certainly wrong.
The investigation will look at it all together, and we will see.
But I do not trust your viewpoint.

I think the best thing is for the cops to withdraw from that school and let diversity reign a la Ferguson.
    Enjoy the decline.

  4. Rick says:
To summarize you think we should devalue David’s opinion because we’re experiencing a rape epidemic, but concurrently you don’t believe the fact that there is no epidemic means we should devalue your opinion.

One day you’ll be able to catch me argumentatively, but until then, I commend you at least for trying. You are so intellectually dishonest it is funny haha.
You surely have a crush on me , somehow you love to zero in on any comment I make and try to a logical flaw in it… I’ll try to make it easier on you from now on…you are welcome!

In case I need to explain my initial post (and seems like I do), the first part was addressed to david, and the subsequent parts addressed to “those of you who feel that assaulting a young girl is justifiable…”.
And it is because there are people like you (who believe that assaulting a young girl is justifiable) that we are now facing an epidemic (who gets to determine what level constitute is an epidemic of rape, you?) of sexual assaults on campus, and that domestic abuse is rampant.

If you can justify the assaulting of a young girl by a grown man, you can justify the assaulting of a female student by a male student, and can justify the assaulting of a woman by her partner. The same immorality and hatred of women that supports one supports the others.

Coming from a misogynistic man like you, Rick, it is understandable, but coming from someone like Karen, a woman who claims to stand up for the right of mistreated women everywhere, it is highly disappointing.
Shame of both of you! Shame on you both!
I am still shocked that Karen never takes the side of women, especially women of color! Shame on you, karen, shame on you!

  5. Paulie,
The cop was not behind the girl. He tipped over the desk from the front of the student, he did not cushion her fall onto her head neck and back as she went down hard. He was in front of her.

    1. Inga – then if he was in front of her desk, there was NO way she was going to break her neck. The front of the desk would act to stop her fall.

      1. He tipped the desk over from the front to the back Paulie, it’s obvious you too haven’t watched the video. Would people please refrain from commenting on what went on in the video without FIRST watching it? I don’t think that’s an unreasonable request.

  6. Annie:

You are misrepresenting what I said yet again.

    I actually said:

“OK. Then dismantle ALL Internal Affairs departments and make all investigations unbiased and third party. I have no problem with all investigations being conducted by a neutral third party. Apply the exact same standard to ALL investigations, not just the ones where black people are involved. Otherwise, the message that is being inadvertently sent to criminal black youth is that it’s a free for all. You can do whatever you want and Al Sharpton will support you, and your family can sue for millions. Equal justice for all.

The DOJ is not a neutral third party. It is heavily politicized. And it is being unequally applied.”

There has been no other justification given for going around IA than the student being black.

As I’ve said before, I have no problem with all investigations into police being done by a neutral third party, but it had better be neutral, unbiased, and non political. The whole point is to get equal justice for everyone.

  7. Karen says let’s have an investigation, then proceeds to ask why an internal investigation isn’t enough. If an investigation is what Karen truly wants it would make sense to have more than just the sheriff’s department investigating itself. We all know how well that has worked in the past, don’t we? There WILL be investigations and I suspect that the reaults of the investigations will be decried by roughly half gone people here.

  8. “However, no one wants a rogue cop either. who uses excessive force for the situation……. and this is the point that should be investigated.”

Thank you, DBQ, a voice of reason.

Oh, and was that the right Chris Rock video? If it’s the one I’m thinking of, it was hilarious.

  9. “Karen, I SAW the video, based on my eyes and the video, my view of what happened is much more
Iikely and realistic than your assumptions based on still pictures. It’s clear that you are going out of your way to create a scenario based on your obvious biases.”

WRONG. I have said a variety of scenarios could have happened, up to and including the cop throwing the chair over as hard as he could on purpose. I have voiced concern that she could have been hurt. Concern that we are becoming a mob and not calmly finding out all the facts before we throw the guy in jail or fire him.

I have asked you how you can tell if she leaned back and flipped the chair over, or if the cop pushed her over, and you have not answered the question. You have said your view is much more likely, but why? Can you see what her upper body was doing?Did you slow it down frame by frame? Are you in CSI? A forensic expert? How do you prove if she tipped it back, or he did, exactly? They will find out, but I am curious how to tell.

Are you saying we do not need an investigation because you saw 15 seconds of video? If not, then what the heck are you arguing about?

What is wrong with you people? Would you like to be treated this way?

  10. Karen hasn’t even seen the video

How many times does she need to state that she CAN’T see the video because her internet bandwidth or speed is not capable. Does this mean that she can’t offer an opinion of any kind?

No one knows exactly what happened. There is an investigation going on and perhaps it will be determined. There is always more than one side to the story.

Others of us…ME…don’t give a rip about this girl because she was flagrantly breaking the rules and being disruptive. If she was not acting in a disrespectful and disruptive manner, there would be nothing to get all verklempt about. However, no one wants a rogue cop either. who uses excessive force for the situation……. and this is the point that should be investigated.

Here’s another question I have. Did the cop drop her? Did the girl tip her chair over, and the cop lost his hold on her and she dropped? Or did the cop shove the chair over?

That is crucial to determining what happened. She could have been really hurt.
