Instagram Closes Artist’s Site After Posting Clinton Parody [UPDATED]

There is an interesting free speech controversy in Melbourne and on the Internet. Melbourne street artist, Lushsux, has not only been told by a city council to remove a parody mural of Hillary Clinton but his Instagram account has been shutdown. Once again, the concern is that there remains a overt liberal bias in the sanctioning of comments or images on the Internet.  Twitter for example has been repeatedly criticized for its barring or harassing conservative writers. UPDATE:  Lushsux has responded to the city demands by painting over the picture to place Clinton in a burka.

Lushsux had more than 100,000 Instagram followers who enjoy his paintings and images — work that extends almost two decades. He noted that “It’s fine to go on and do a mural on Trump, but when I go and do one on Hillary Clinton, my account is gone.”

Notably, there are plenty of suggestive murals splashed across Melbourne’s street-scape, including murals featuring Republican nominee Donald Trump and a topless Melania Trump emblazoned with the Mrs Clinton’s campaign catchphrase, “I’m With Her.”  Lushsux has always courted controversy with his political and social satire in street art.

The city council demanded the removal of the mural, though it insisted that it was not due to the political content but the graphic display.

Council chief executive Stephen Wall insisted “We believe it is offensive because of the depiction of a near-naked woman, not on the basis of disrespect to Hillary Clinton, in accordance with the Graffiti Prevention Act 2007.” However, the image itself does not appear particularly graphic in comparison with common advertisements and store images.

Regardless of the basis for the city council action, the Instagram action is extremely problematic and raises, again, serious questions over content-based censorship.

What do you think?

    1. @Squeeky:

Thanks, but I am more the “long for the unattainable … like Penelope” kind of guy.

Besides, I never do well with women who communicate a lot in symbols – like a raised middle finger.

But I am sure she is really an interesting person, and probably a great dancer, too.

  1. It sure looked like a bar code to me. Totally appropriate, I say.

    1. Foxtrot – I blew the pic up as much as I could and it was either a window or a vent, but painted flesh colored.

  2. @Autumn

She sort of does. I helped her with it. It is kind of inactive right now. Just skip down a few articles and you get to the good stuff. She stays busy practicing law, and I stay busy . . . well. . .I don’t stay real busy. I work part-time for her as a legal assistant, and part-time for my mother helping her with her business, and I do a few things on the side for other people. I guess I ought to get it back up and running for her. But it is sooo hot outside. And the pool is so nice and cool. . . and I have books to read, and guitars to play, and little stupid pictures to do, and people to offend . . .Oh! I guess I am just lazy.

As I said I thought your post was excellent! The only reason I caught that was because I spent the last year and half of my life studying the TPP/TTIP, NAFTA, CAFTA and KORUS. I chose trade deals to do my final paper on for my MA in International Relations. =) Kudos to YOU!

deflecting as usual to get away from the facts and issues…. How sad it must be to be on a rapidly sinking ship.

Thanks for posting that!! Does Penelope have a website?

  5. Like to see Squeeky/Autumn can deliver the Breitbart news. James OKeefe is proud.

  6. @squeek

Love it! No, I don’t believe “black soul” can be construed as “racist” =)

Actually there is quite a bit of good news for the Donald today!! You must be reading/watching the MSM!

Enthusiastic male (and lesbian/bi) supporters really enjoyed the photos of Melania in the buff. I’m straight, but must admit I find her to be alluring and beautiful.

Also, some stuff on Khan: “Khizr Khan Deletes Law Firm Website that Specialized in Muslim Immigration” Seems like Khan was helping wealthy Muslims get green cards and maybe they contributed to the Clinton Foundation?

and he had a “yuuge” rally in Virginia:

    1. “Enthusiastic male (and lesbian/bi) supporters really enjoyed the photos of Melania in the buff.”

On the other hand, maybe Trump has been more successful that we realized.

  8. Not much news from Trump on social media today except that he finally got around to booting a baby from his campaign.

yup, part of that pivot to Asia dontcha know. TPP includes Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand as Pacific Rim states.

  10. Wow… what happened that Singapore is tasking the US over credibility??? Once again, time to step back from policing the world and just sell it stuff. Can’t believe we extend defense guarantees to these people, and I am pretty sure we do for Singapore.

  11. Also the prime minister of Singapore is jumpin’ and jivin’ with Obama right now — or should I say slow jammin’ to get it out in the MSM that the TPP must be ratified.

“Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has told the United States Chamber of Commerce that the ratification of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is “a litmus test of your credibility”.

    1. Thanks for the correction.

By any name it is bad news for those of us who care about the democratic process and our national sovereignty.

  12. Aussie pols already sold out, ready to get on the TPP train. The common folk did put up an enormous fuss though.

    1. TPP is being promoted as a free trade agreement.

But it is not that at all. TPP protects corporate profits by protecting and extending government granted monopolies in the form of patents and other intellectual property.

However you may feel about patents, copy write and the like, they are not free trade.

Further this restriction of free trade is bought at the cost of limitations of our national sovereignty. Democratically enacted legislation can be challenged by corporations operating outside the judicial process in the Non State Dispute Settlement portion of TPP.

The corporate shills promoting the “free trade” TPP claim that the NSDS will hardly ever be used.

Does that makes sense to you. Once corporations realize they can make an end run around the legislative process and the judicial system to enhance their profits why would they hesitate?

If logic forces you to conclude they would not hesitate, then I think you are right.

TPP is a very serious problem that ought to engage the attention of anyone who cares about the democratic process in this country.

We need to let our elected officials know that voting for TPP is going to result in severe unemployment – inside the beltway! Elected officials need to understand that voting for TPP is a sure way to gain fresh new perspective on the power of democracy – and what happens to legislators who ignore the economic well being of their voters.

  13. @jill offers some excellent reporting. As as DemocracyNow. I fear that TYT has gone over to the Dark Side.

  14. If Bill Clinton sees that mural he may follow suit with Les Liasons Dangereuses where the dissipated main character, after a life of every possible sexual indulgence, decided one weekend that the kinkiest thing he could possibly do at this point was go to bed with his own wife.

  15. 20 years ago there was no Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WordPress or other social media platforms, yet millions were expressing themselves anyway, using their own private web pages, all indexed by Yahoo. Now, the Internet has been hijacked by the madness of crowds, all submitting to peer pressure at the cost of freedom, individuality and creativity. Anyone can configure their desktop or PC to run as a private server. Hillary did it, and that’s what this Aussi artist shoul do. Hell, we all should, and if we do, the Zuckerfaces of the world will fade into insignificance as rapidly as they came into existence.
