Fox News and the Wall Street Journal are reporting that a text message from a former aide to Chris Christie said that the New Jersey governor “flat out lied” during a news conference about the George Washington Bridge lane-closing scandal. The text message is part of a court filing reviewed by Fox.
The transcripted text is between Christina Renna, Christie’s director of intergovernmental affairs, and Peter Sheridan, a staffer on his re-election campaign. It is part of the filings in the pre-trial motions for Bill Baroni, who will be tried with Christie’s ex-deputy chief of staff for allegedly helping to orchestrate the September 2013 lane closures.
Christie has repeatedly insisted that no one in his office was involved in the lane closings. He denied any knowledge by senior staff in his office. Renna appears to have a curious interest in the truth for a political aide and told Sheridan “Are you listening? He just flat out lied about senior staff and [campaign manager Bill] Stepien not being involved.” Sheridan seems unconcerned and says “I’m listening. Gov is doing fine. Holding his own up there.” Renna respondes with “Yes. But he lied. And if emails are found with the subpoena or ccfg [Chris Christie for Governor] emails are uncovered in discovery if it comes to that it could be bad.”
It is not clear if the discovery was known to the Trump campaign when it decided not to give Christie the vice presidential slot. It is also not clear if Christie will be called as a witness to address the allegation. What is interesting is that politicians will often pivot out of such conflicts by emphasizing a lack of direct knowledge at the time of the statement. However, here his aides immediately called him out from what they considered a “flat out” lie.
What do you think?
All I can tell you is that I HATE the Washington Bridge. And the $15 toll they charge is outrageous. Plus, you might even make a wrong turn into the Bronx, and find yourself in the middle of politically-based mess like this one:
Autumn,
That’s a great idea! A movie camera would be helpful for those times when your vote is changing right before your eyes!
@Graciela
Most states do NOT offer paper ballots. Best I can figure out to document your vote is when you go in the booth to choose your candidate and take a photo with your cell phone that includes you, who are voting for – the date/time will be on it.
Yes, it has come to this – we have to do self-documentation to try to prevent HRC and Demoncrats from stealing the (s)election.
@Jill
REALLY? Did you have to mention naked emperors? Visualizing Christie naked is a horror show. Didn’t the Donald tell him to lay off the Oreos?
@IndyBob
I have to say I understand that guide’s objections. Here in Charleston, SC (as well as in many other cities deemed desirable places to live) the gentrification is going crazy. Now that rich whites want to live Downtown fancy public schools are being built and blacks are being pushed off the Peninsula. Many of these families have lived here for generations (descendants of plantation slaves who actually drove the economy and built the city!) and are used to being able to walk to the grocery store, barber shop, churches, parks, etc. Where are they supposed to go? To the hideous burbs where one cannot walk to anything? Surely a balance can be found. The money the rich whites bring to the community is certainly welcome — and they have the money to fix up some of the beautiful older homes, but driving the blacks away is terrible. Do we want to live in a sanitized upscaled adult Disney Land??
Everyone knew Christie was lying about this from the beginning.
We the people need to point out there are many naked emperors running loose in the US!
It’s time to stop giving credence to lying, evil men and women who have power. If we don’t allow them to have our respect then they aren’t going to get so far in this society. Cheering on and taking seriously people who harm others is just stupid and we should stop it immediately!
Maybe we need to get out of the road that current politicians have created for us. Let’s explore other possibilities and rebel against the corrupted politicians we already know. Look how fast they stopped Sen. Bernie Sanders. We have the power of the vote. Let’s use it. By the way we shouldn’t allow any electronic vote. That is our worst enemy. Let’s go back to the paper ballot. But if we sit down and accept the lies they try to sell to us, then we will not have any right to complain.
Absolutely!!
It used to be that lies were discovered and heads would roll. Then it became lies were discovered and eyes would roll. Now, those lying no longer bother with the fallout because the supporters don’t care. In fact, they will make every effort to silence anyone that threatens their favored liar.
We are no longer a constitutional republic but at best a utilitarian republic. This IS the evolution of our nation. We no longer expect a government that respects the rule of law. We expect a government that will do right according to what is perceived to be right; if that happens to intersect with the rule of law then that is merely by coincidence.
This republic died when Americans stopped caring about character.
Olly writes, “It used to be that lies were discovered and heads would roll. Then it became lies were discovered and eyes would roll. Now, those lying no longer bother with the fallout because the supporters don’t care. In fact, they will make every effort to silence anyone that threatens their favored liar. . . .”
Well-stated. ‘Bout sums it up.
“Renna appears to have a curious interest in the truth for a political aide…”
That line needs to be acknowledged.
That is all.
What do I think? Christian Renna better testify, better be held in civil contempt and jailed if she doesn’t, and better be provided 24-hour protection until she does.
A Fridge Too Far..
That OK ?
Forget it, Jake. It’s Jersey.
She would have an informed opinion about what was known and not known among those employed in the executive chamber in Trenton. On trial as we speak is Bridget Kelly, who was one-degree of separation from the governor in the state government and can be readily seen in pix of public events standing near his corpulent person.
No surprise really. But how bout the MSM start talking about HRC’s lies? Saw a bumper sticker: “Hillary Lied and Thousands Died”
Autumn, I’d love to have that bumper sticker 😂.
Sadly for America, I personally don’t even care. If one political party can lie at the drop of a hat and then lie about their lies…then if Mr. Christie lied, I could care less. He had a wonderful role model. How about the MSM stop being biased, propaganda machines?
America is FED UP!
This is a big Demoncrat stronghold they know how to make hay.
The rampant ubiquitous corruption in government makes Trump’s buffoonery look good in comparison.
Using the headline “A Bridge too Far” for this tawdry case insults the heroic allied soldiers who landed at Arnhem in 1944 to take and hold the bridge over the Rhine river.
It appears there is smoke, but no fire.
Me thinks the Macy’s Day Parade blimp in waiting has his tit in a wringer.
Just another example of the political corruption that is pulling down our system.
Americans have become so jaded with politicians that they expect this kind of behavior.
I have no idea what Christies’s involvement with the bridge scandal was, but I am prepared to believe the worst of him because that is how politicians behave.
