Today on Face the Nation, President Donald Trump said that he was not sure if North Korean Dictator Kim Jung-un is sane, but he is clearly “a pretty smart cookie” since he was able to hold and keep power at such a young age. The statement has people around the world stunned since Jung-un has spent years killing people in a paranoid rage, including feeding people alive to animals or shooting them with anti-aircraft weapons. One does not have to be smart to rule by terror. You just have to be a murderous maniac.
In the interview, Trump said:
“People are saying, “Is he sane?” I have no idea. I can tell you this, and a lot of people don’t like when I say it, but he was a young man of 26 or 27 when he took over from his father, when his father died. He’s dealing with obviously very tough people, in particular the generals and others.’
‘And at a very young age, he was able to assume power,’ Trump continued. ‘A lot of people, I’m sure, tried to take that power away, whether it was his uncle or anybody else. And he was able to do it. So obviously, he’s a pretty smart cookie.”
I am not sure what to make of the image of Kim taking over the family business from his father, but some have suggested that there is an unconscious comparison to Trump’s own life with a father in the same business. I hope that is not true. What is clear is that there is absolutely no indication of an intelligent design behind the disaster that is North Korea. Kim has pushed his population to starvation while needlessly isolating his regime politically and militarily. Now his very survival is in question. Indeed, the most dangerous aspect of Kim is that what he is acting clearly against his own interest and certainly the interest of his country. Even China is cutting off supplies and support for Kim. His “intellect” could now trigger World War III.
What is also clear is that it has not been an exercise of intellect but sheer inhumanity that has kept this moron in power. He has simply terrorized everyone around him and killed anyone who could challenge him. What is left is a bunch of cringing aides pretending to write down everything that Kim is saying on subjects ranging from weather forecasts to nuclear science. That is not a sign of intelligence.
What do you think?

Wow, 39 comments about a meaningless article. The fact remains that Un is in power and I assume some actual really smart cookies are trying to figure out what to do about it. And by the way, Donald Trump is President of the United States and he accomplished that over some really smart cookies and the entire DNC machinery. That must really hurt the intellectuals. ;:)
Winning elections has very little to do with governing as Trump is finding out.
As every one of them find out Dave.
Olly – remember when Hillary was described as the smartest woman in the room while testifying before Congress? Things sure went downhill after that. For such a smart woman, she sure ran a dumb campaign.
She sure did.
Paul,
We have some pretty smart cookies in this blog.
Turley says: “What is clear is that there is absolutely no indication of an intelligent design behind the disaster that is North Korea. ” What follows is actually more asinine, if that were possible.
Here’s an expert. One’s blood runs cold:

Thank you Patrick. I watched about 10 minutes of it and will take the rest in when I have more time.
I’m going to use PSC (pretty smart cookie) from now on to refer to the intellectuals that believe good governance comes from high IQ’s.
I believe nation-building with the American model cannot be exported without the will of their people desiring it to be imported. Proof of this idea exists in our own country. We now have generations that reject our own model because they have no understanding of the backstory that created it. Without that understanding and most importantly the acceptance of those truths, then our model is irrelevant. Fingers can be pointed to this and that but in my opinion the PSC’s that hold themselves in higher regard than our founding fathers are the root of our decline. There biggest failure is based on the assumption that human nature evolves…period.
Your reply, Olly, reminds me of Tucker the other night. He was surprised, and happy:

Patrick,
I hadn’t seen the interview but I had heard of it.. Richard Dreyfuss is absolutely correct. I follow this blog because it is a blog centered on the law. Unfortunately, the law itself (and many people here support this) is not centered on the “rule” of law. Sure, it’s conveyed that it is, but it is largely disconnected from the principles of the original model. The topics we discuss here have more to do with “how” the law is being used to further an ideology, and if one were to inject the founding ideology, well that is routinely ignored or even persecuted. There is a genuine lack of humility here, I believe it to be a reflection on society as well. Nothing demonstrates this point more than the denial of natural rights. That is to me a suicidal idea but this “legal” blog has many supporters of it.
The Pizza Hut spokesman is a dumb radish.
Trump’s comment is an indication of his own relative lack of smartness. He equates the ability to achieve and maintain power – no matter the means – with intelligence. That he does this is – I am convinced – an indication of his own inability to recognize actual intelligence in others or himself. His comment reveals just how astonishingly ignorant and unaware he is of his own lack of intellectual and critical thinking abilities. I think Trump to be a near textbook example of the Dunning-Kruger effect (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning%E2%80%93Kruger_effect). He thinks himself to have a superior intellect, when there is more than abundant evidence that his intellect is most probably below the average, or at best average.
Professor Turley: ” One does not have to be smart to rule by terror.”
Just have a really bad haircut.
I can’t believe someone who appears to be clinically insane is a real near-totalitarian head of state of a nuclear power. He seems MUCH crazier than Trump & Trump is pushing the envelope.
I doubt he’s really in charge. I suspect either China or the North Korean military hold the true power.
Trump was just blowing smoke up Little Un’s backside. He thought he would flatter him a bit and see if it would calm him down.
I think I know more about the DPRK, then the very busy man elected president. Freekorea.us is a source with links. Easily, a hundred documentaries have been made about it by authors from different countries. More, news features have been written. Professors who specialize in the country have given radio, audio, video, written books, as well as articles. Obviously, he has been groomed for the job. China is playing a duel game at the moment. The starvation was 20 years ago. Intelligent design : totalitarian regimes can not exist without design. My head is filled with factoids about North Korea. The death by animals is a myth.
Chris – the problem with the stories about Kim are deciding which ones are true or not.
Very true. Quality journalists do follow-ups as well as a loose community of volunteers. Unfortunately, half truths, exaggeration, misrepresentation s have already entered the airwaves and public discussion.
Smart cookie-one must differentiate between intelligent and clever or smart. Kim is clever/smart but not intelligent, as is Trump. Perhaps that is why Trump likes these guys: Kim, Putin, Duarate, etc.
What do I think? I think that we have learned nothing from our previous military disasters and that we will be involved in another one, this time taking down half the planet.
Yes, but think of it. Nuclear winter might solve the problem of global warming. It will certainly solve the problem of human existence.
Hell, even the libtards get something out of it. Ann Coulter won’t be able to give talks at universities because there will be no universities, nor any Ann Coulters.
Logic fail. Liking is not the same as clear vision of anorher’s capabilities.
It takes as much intelligence to inherit power as it does to inherit money or inherit blue eyes. And it’s not even clear Kim Jong-un is anything more than a puppet. You can’t take anything Trump says serioulsy.
He’s President of the United States and has, via his position, the ability to really screw things up whether intentionally or not. So to suggest that we not take seriously the things he says is a rather foolish piece of advise.
The “friggin midget”, as they refer to him in Japan, will soon start a nuclear war. The problem with bombing his capital with a nuke is the fallout over South Korea and China. Napalm might be the solution.
One can tell a lot about someone by his chooses of allies, who he is in tune with. Trump has apparently made his choice for at least one such ally in his determination to look tough (at any cost) against North Korea, and the winner is…., Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/04/30/trump-invites-controversial-philippines-leader-duterte-to-white-house.amp.html
Obama didn’t have as much luck. He didn’t particularly like Duterte and told him as much regarding Duterte’s overly tender ministrations to alleged criminals, such as dropping a suspected kidnapper from a helicopter. Duterte bravely shot back, “Mr. Obama, you can go to hell … I am the president of a sovereign country, and I am not answerable to anyone except the Filipino people. Son of a b—-, I will swear at you,”
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/donald-trump-invites-philippine-president-rodrigo-duterte-white/story?id=47112097
For Trump, however, such distinctions as “alleged” and “suspected” take back seat to someone of Duterte’s enviable charm and ability to lead by unusually persuasive techniques. No doubt this mentor from the Philippines knows the best way to deal with abuse of human rights is to get rid of them altogether, and in this Trump may well have found a soul mate.
The help Trump needs is not so much from one super power to another, since Duterte is far too busy killing his own citizens one by one with his own bare hands when possible. Rather, it is how to take out a criminal leader that Trump deeply admires, in this case one smart cookie, Kim Jong-un of North Korea. The Phillippine President has apparently conquered such human frailties as admiration and emulation and Trump recognizes the need for this “one time only” (ahem) solution.
chooses-> choicesWhite House chief of staff Reince Priebus defended President Donald Trump’s decision to invite Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte to the White House, saying the visit is necessary to work together against North Korea.

Keep at it, your beginning to see the darkness.
Donald Trump should start answering questions like Bill Belichick.
Honestly, this doesn’t bother me. ESP when I think back to all the horrors we have (in the person of whom ever is president) complimented, for whatever purpose.
It was a dumb question John Dickerson asked. Pres. Trump needs to get comfortable saying “That’s a dumb question….Let’s move on”.
My favorite was when President Donald Trump said to host John Dickerson, “I love your show. I call it Deface the Nation.”
“What is also clear is that it has not been an exercise of intellect but sheer inhumanity that has kept this moron in power. He has simply terrorized everyone around him and killed anyone who could challenge him. What do you think?”
Except for the killing part, sure sounds a lot like Trump!
enigma – sounds a lot like Obama, too. 🙂
I’ll grant you that every President… maybe every politician has a gaggle of people surrounding them trying to spin every statement they make as if it were some genius pronouncement. Perhaps more than any President in my memory. Trump says things that are totally incoherent or totally in conflict with earlier statements (possibly moments ago) and we have it explained to us what he really meant and that we have to ignore his words. As far as terrorizing people. Only yesterday he terrorized Muslims, the press, Republican Congressman, Democrats, and that’s what I gleaned on a day where I barely kept up with the news. (Granddaughter’s birthday party!)
enigma – happy belated birthday to your granddaughter. 🙂 Obama was supposed to give a speech for Hillary and mentioned himself over 100 times.
I started into a long rant comparing the traits of Obama and Trump but elected to simply say, Thank You” for wishing my granddaughter well. She had a wonderful day!
You’re awesome!
I think he is a paranoid narcissist. Given time he will be in competition for Mass Murderer of Ever.
Kim is holding the world hostage and to do that you can’t be stupid.
Agreed. And I suspect that’s exactly what Trump meant by “smart cookie”.
Simply wrong. Stupid people are quite capable of acts of savagery, brutality and indifference toward others. It does not take anything more than an average level of smartness to achieve and wield power in an overly oppressive and brutal manner.
It’s the same kind of intelligence the oligarchy displays in every nation. They are all willing to murder and torture and many of them, including our own dear leaders (past and present), have committed war crimes.
Everyone needs to sane up fast, including the generals and neocons running the US. As titular head of the nation, it would be really nice for Trump to sane up as well. Speaking about his beautiful chocolate cake while sending missiles to kill children (for the children) is psychotic and frightening.
I would like to see world nuclear disarmament. I would like to see the rule of law followed in the US. I would like to see the USGinc. sane up and immediately reconsider the desire to nuke the world because of some a-hole in N. Korea whose missiles are so pathetic that they don’t even work.
Our “leaders” don’t have any business criticizing anyone. They have a track record of murder, torture, destruction and financial fraud. These emperors all are naked and the sooner we the people will call them out, the better.
