Mueller Reportedly Pursuing Inquiry Into Pre-Election Trump Dealings In Moscow And Threat Of “Kompromat”

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators are reportedly looking into allegations of possible Russian blackmail or “kompromat” over Donald Trump from his prior business dealings and work in Moscow during the Miss America Pageant.  Notably, he is also exploring when Trump started to consider his run for President and whether such plans may have started as earlier as 2014 — around the time of the formation of the Russian election operation.  Other reports indicate that Mueller is pursuing inquiries into Trump knowledge or relationship with Wikileaks and when he first became aware of the hacking of emails.

I have previously written that the financial investigations likely hold the greatest danger (with false statement charges) for Trump.  This story, which is appearing in various outlets, would indicate that the Special Counsel is drilling down on the most salacious aspect of the Steele Dossier and the suggestion that the Russians  had compromising information on Trump stemming from the pageant and work in Moscow.

Notably, Trump’s counterpart in the Tower project was Aras Agalarov and his son Emin Agalarov who worked with him to  bring the Miss Universe pageant to Moscow in 2013. Those names should ring a bell for those following the current investigations.  Emin is a musician who worked with publicist Rob Goldstone.  It was Goldstone that arranged the infamous meeting in Trump Tower with Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer to receive alleged evidence of illegal contributions to the Clinton Foundation.

This inquiry could ultimately reflect an investigation that is compelled to address the dossier and lingering allegations of blackmail by the Russians. However, it also reflects the broader array of issues not only for the investigation but any potential interview for Trump. It would be unlikely however that Mueller would question Trump on such allegations without support beyond the Steele dossier alone.

The specific crime in Kompromat would be blackmail on the part of Russian actors or fraudulent transactions that are part of an overall Kompromat scheme.  Once again, we have no support for the dossier allegation and proving such a crime can be extremely difficult.  Other presidents have been accused of having compromising relationships like John F. Kennedy that were known to third parties from foreign intelligence to the mob.  Absent some clear evidence of a criminal scheme, such evidence however could also appear in a report to Congress by the Special Counsel, though it is unlikely without more substantive foundation than the dossier alone.

  2. I think the relevant legal standard, one the Dems and media cannot seem to grasp, is “there’s no crime or misconduct in Russian intelligence having selected you for recruitment”. The agency falls clearly on the Russians, and DOES NOT equate to any agency on the part of the target.

    Let’s also remember that in the post-Soviet, pre-Sochi period (1991-2014), it was considered hip and entrepreneurial for Americans to cultivate business dealings with Russians. Granted, this enthusiasm was
    gradually abandoned as Americans discovered that they could be cheated and had no legal recourse under Russian law. But, the big swing toward antipathy took place just 4 years ago, right after the Sochi Olympics with the Crimean annexation. It’s just dishonest to impose the current distrust of Russia on business dealings that took place during the period of goodwill and openness.

    It would be good to have someone investigating Kompromat ops, but you have to question how much Mueller will be able to publicly divulge when his investigation is over.

  6. It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up-still as relevant as it was in the Watergate saga. Trump has not been compromised. If we know anything about him, he is extremely strong willed and defiant. If the Russians had been able to use “kompromat” I do not believe he would have chose to run, He should just admit the truth about his pre-campaign activities, both personal indiscretions and financially questionable ties (and I think that the former is more likely the case). Marion Barry got re-elected D.C. mayor after his smoking crack with a whore in hotel room. Every other politician on the Hill has had “self-kompromat” at some point. If there is something pre-election, that has not affected his actions post Trump campaign, then he should just admit it and move on. These deep state political hacks should not be able to pull off their coup with a perjury trap.

I don’t understand why we are subjected to this interminable “leaking” of information from this supposed “investigation.” In this era of data access, why the hell does it take soooo long for the “FBI” to bring charges against or exonerate Trump? The longer Mueller drags this out, the more convinced I am that this is a just another DNC orchestrated PR campaign. I predict Mueller will wait until October and then will publish some incredibly tenuous, complicated theory that casts suspicion on Trump and tilts the election scales for the DNC. Meanwhile, we will be treated to endless “details” of the “salacious” “dossier” that the DNC paid for. Boy, are they getting their money’s worth!

    No. The kompromat is the business deals by means of which Steele alleged the Russians had been cultivating Trump–not the salacious aspect. If those business deals are the financial crimes that Turley claims pose the greatest danger to Trump, then, not only would those financial crimes be kompromat, but they would also verify yet another key allegation in the Steele dossier. The Russian information warfare was also alleged in the Steele dossier and subsequently verified. The attempted cultivation of Carter Page was alleged in the Steele dossier and subsequently corroborated but incompletely verified on the specific details. Such might yet occur with the dossier’s allegations against Michael D. Cohen. Meanwhile, if you really want to find fault with Steele and his Russian informants, you might want to point out that Steele did not make any allegations against Papadopoulos. He did make a few allegations against Manafort, though.

So, Trump has stated that he is innocent, exonerated, etc. If so, release the tax records, assist Mueller to dig out ‘everything’, etc. The overriding argument is America and its ideal of a representative government of its people, all its people, and only its people. If there is manipulation from abroad, we must know in order to confront it and stop it. If Trump is involved in any of it, then we should have him impeached and made an example of what not to elect.

    At this pathetic point in American political history, we have a circus where the loudest, best funded, puppet is presented and elected. If this research and investigation by Mueller does not take its course, our system will only get worse, if that is possible.

        Trump has always been about Trump. Trump’s entire history has been about privilege and being kowtowed to at every level. Trump has seen himself as ‘Presidential’ for decades. His ‘man’s man’ who worked for him for decades, making sure all was just as Trump wanted it to be, was tasked with preceding Trump into a room to make sure the occupants stood when Trump entered. This has been documented well enough, Trump’s ego.

        Trump failed at many more enterprises that those at which he succeeded. This is also fact. The only enterprises at which Trump succeeded have been pandering to the mega wealthy in real estate during a revival of New York and financed by his Dad and his Dad’s connections and knowledge. Trump knows enough about real estate for the mega wealthy to not fail, yet he has failed from time to time in that as well.

        Trump has seen himself as President for decades. He changed parties many times, spoke about ‘not running’ many times, and has always been so full of himself that he was elected New York’s main buffoon decades ago. When Gorbachov visited New York, a look alike presented himself at Trump Tower and asked to meet Trump. Trump was gullible and egotistic enough to actually believe this and came down to meet the head of the other ‘greatest nation on earth’, only to be laughed at, which he took as a compliment.

        Yeah, but it could be the Russians and Clinton. Trump is not beyond using that scenario if he gets tossed on his can. We can only hope. After all anyone who is capable of evading the draft and then posing as the hero who would have saved the day, with or without a weapon………

        The big question is do we bounce this buffoon soon or do we have to endure the name Trump on a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. The USS Gerald Ford is just passable. There will be no USS Nixon; but the USS Trump, whoa. I’m not sure but perhaps a President had to serve to get his name on a carrier; but Trump would dust off his uniform and his posturing at being the potential to stop crazed killers somehow.

  19. You have to remember that the FISA warrant on Carter Page allows a double hop of additional warrants. Anyone Page talks to and anyone they talk to. This is how the net works. Carter Page never spoke to Trump, but he spoke to someone who spoke to Trump. Now Trump is wiretapped. See how it all works? In fact, the entire switchboard at Trump Towers was wired.

I suggest you go out and find out what Carter Page’s actual job was in Russia and who he was working for. Manafort was hired by Trump because Cruz was getting Trump delegates to pledge to him on the 2nd ballot. Manafort stopped that and helped knock Cruz out of the race. I think Flynn’s guilty plea is going to be overturned by Judge Sullivan. It appears McCabe, who was not in the interview, decided that Flynn lied to the FBI. An email shows it was thought he was truthful in the interview. Whether the 302s were changed or not is another question.

          But I do know a guy who claims that Trump Tower was wired to the topmast and that double-hopping off the FISA warrant on Carter Page may have allowed surveillance of Manafort, if, as reported, Page had previously sent an email to Manafort before his trip to Russia to give a commencement address.

          Did you know that the Steele dossier alleged that Manafort was managing Page’s contacts with Russians?

Then in his articles he states some countervailing opinion of the posted headline, “in his article at The Hill”, then he continues with his BS attacks of the Democrats. Like Trump, he has it both ways…are the democrats treasonous, sure, maybe not, but I can see it. Turley slams Schiff as a hypocrite on FISA transparency, he slams Clinton as having more collusive behavior than Trump, etc., but he glosses over stuff like the fact that America was cyber attacked by Russia…or that Russia chose Trump over Rubio, Bush, or Cruz, for some reason. And that Trump fired Comey to end the analysis of that reason of Russian preference. Russia spent over a millions bucks a month on proTrump propaganda and hacked 7 swing states’s votes. Nothing to see there, right Turley?

    That’s why the DOJ phrased the grant of authority creating the SC as “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump;”. Those links are many and growing “Russian agents living in Trump Tower, Russian agents offering up dirt on Clinton at a meeting which Trump crafted a lie about ‘adoptions’, Russia provides a ‘disproportionate amount’ of financial backing, and the stunning fact that Manafort, Gates and Flynn were all integral to Trump’s campaign.
    Manafort and Trump have strong business ties dating back to the ‘80’s. Manafort bought a condo in Trump Tower in 2006. Gates ran Trump’s inauguration. Flynn was considered as Trump’s running mate. There is no way to untangle these three from Trump. Turley sounds like a run-of-the-mill right wing deplorable when he crows about “no evidence of collusion” when such evidence is all around. There have been no charges of coordination or ‘collusion’ bc Mueller is on his own schedule, not Turley’s. This is like a guy running around smeared in blood, bloody knife in hand, and Turley says there’s nothing to see here bc we haven’t seen the body yet.

    At every turn, Turley has bent over backwards to support Trump, slamming Comey, Mueller, Clinton and the Democrats while playing dumb over Trump’s indiscretions like firing Comey to end the Russia investigation and admitting such on National TV…just like when Trump begged Russia to hack and release Clinton’s emails on national TV…and Russia did just that….but it was just a joke, right? Turley is calculated in his transgressions bc they inflate his lunatic right wing bona fides and camera time on FOX.

    Let him be FOX’s dancing bear. His soft treachery won’t be forgotten.

              IMO, Turley’s political posts parallel the topic du jour, from the donor class. Turley posted praise for the young woman who opposed the 3rd reich while remaining silent about Heather Heyer and, about Trump referring to Neo-Nazi’s as “good people”. It is not a position unique to him. The donor class fed Bannon. And, they fund the outrage at the rise in violence against Jews. But, on the White violence against Blacks issue, they are mute, sometimes congratulatory.
              Turley touts free speech. In the net neutrality conflict, Trump’s FCC serves the wealthy. The teacher’s arrest at a school board meeting in Louisiana when she exercised free speech didn’t result in a post at this site. To the short-sided donor class, labor is an enemy.
              Just as evangelicals responded by pivoting to embrace Judaism, repudiating Christ’s teachings about the poor and, rationalizing Trump’s moral failings (business treachery and marriage infidelity), donor class journalists and bloggers make similar concessions.
