Trump and Netanyahu Meet As Investigations Move Forward In The United States and Israel

White House picture from May 2017 (U.S. Government)

President Donald Trump and Israeli Benjamin Netanyahu meet today in the White House as a critical moment for both leaders. It is not just a common interest in Middle East peace that they have in common in this meeting. Both men now have key aides who have been cooperating witnesses for prosecutions investigating allegations of wrongdoing. While there is still not direct evidence implicating Trump, Netanyahu is facing a serious threat of indictment, particularly after his former key aides, Nir Hefetz and Shlomo Filber have agreed to testify against him. These witnesses are far closer to Netanyahu and are cooperating on criminal cases directly linked to Netanyahu — as opposed to the collateral crimes thus far addressed by the Special Counsel. One other difference is the respective Constitutional issues.  As I discussed recently, Israel has long accepted that a Prime Minister can be indicted in office.  I believe that the same is true for a president, but there is a long and good-faith debate over the question.

Netanyahu is facing an expanding corruption scandal and is expected to be indicted.  Part of the investigation centers on his pushing regulations worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Israel’s Bezeq telecom company in an alleged quid pro quo for favorable coverage.  There are also allegations of corruption due to alleged gifts to Netanyahu and his family.  The gifts amounted to an alleged $280,000 in value.  Netanyahu’s allies have declared the investigation to be as “witch hunt.”

Former Trump aides like Flynn, Gates, and Papadopoulos are now cooperative witnesses for Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Moreover, it was recently disclosed that Mueller has demanded communications with Trump going back years as well as figures like his personal attorney Michael Cohen.

As I discussed earlier, many countries allow a chief executive to be indicted in office and there is a distinction between impeachment and indictment.  There is one point upon which constitutional scholars uniformly agree: The best course in dealing with a felonious president is to first remove the president from office through the impeachment process and then indict the former president in the wake of the Senate conviction. That is no favor to a president. Impeachment is not subject to the rules of criminal procedure and does not include most of the due process protections afforded to criminal defendants such as evidentiary protections and prohibitions against hearsay evidence. It can also undermine a criminal defense in a later prosecution by inducing statements from a president that could later be used against him in a criminal trial.

However, there is no immunity expressly granted by the Constitution and there is nothing in the Constitutional Convention that directly supports such a sweeping immunity.

While I have long been critical of Israeli constitutional system (that lends itself to the control of small parties), this is a circumstance where Israel has the right approach to the problem of an alleged felonious executive.  Once again, I still do not see case for either collusion or obstruction against Trump though I have always recognized that Mueller may still have evidence to reveal.  The issue remains thankfully abstract for now.  However, the timing of the meeting could not be more poignant.

  1. Washington, DC and Israel are full of War Criminals and they are in a panic.

The International Criminal Court and Interpol can begin arresting them.

The U.S. courts are corrupt else they could arrest them also.

The arrests could begin at any time.

To Fund a War of Aggression is War Crime. Many U.S. politicians for years are War Criminals in funding and supporting U.S. / Israeli Wars of Aggression. The marines could encircle congress with Many prison buses and load them up.

“At first glance, it seems that Interpol is a greater threat, but the Hague has already initiated a war crimes probe and is not about to drop it.”

  2. Palestinians increase payments to terrorists to $403 million
The Palestinian Authority paid terrorists and their families over $347 million in 2017.

    March 6, 2018 15:35

    3 minute read.

Palestinians Increase Payments to Terrorists to $403 Million, March 6, 2018
The Palestinian Authority increased its payments to terrorists and their families in 2018 by nearly $56 million, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Avi Dichter (Likud) said overnight Monday, when a bill to discourage the practice passed a first reading.

Dichter pointed out that President Mahmoud Abbas authorized the 2018 PA budget on Sunday, and that there is a PA law that says 7% of each budget must go to paying terrorists, or to their families, if they’re killed in the act.

The increase “means that the PA will employ more terrorists as PA workers,” Dichter said. “Except that the terrorists who work for the PA have a special quality – they are employed both as dead and living terrorists.

“Murderers like the ones who killed the Fogel family” – two Palestinians killed five out of eight members of the family in Itamar, including a three-month-old, in 2011 – “are heroes to the PA. This is not a whim. It’s in the PA’s constitution,” Dichter added.

The PA paid terrorists and their families more than $347m. in 2017. Terrorists who have been sentenced to three to five years in Israeli prisons receive the average income of a Palestinian, about $580 per month. The families of those who committed more severe crimes and were involved in killing Israelis receive five times that each month for the rest of their lives.

Terrorists receive more from the PA if they are married, for each child they have, if they live in Jerusalem or if they’re an Israeli citizen.

The bill that passed a first reading on Monday, proposed by Yesh Atid MK Elazar Stern and Dichter, would require the government to deduct the amount the PA paid to terrorists and their families from the taxes and tariffs Israel collects for the PA. The proposal was inspired by the Taylor Force Act, a US bill named after an American victim of Palestinian terrorism, which would cut all US aid to the PA until the terrorist payments are stopped.

Stern said when he presented the bill to the Knesset that “there is no opposition or coalition” on the matter.

“In the current situation, there is an incentive for terrorism, which only pushes away peace,” Stern said. “This bill is not only meant to promote the security of citizens and residents of the State of Israel, but to promote peace.”

According to Stern, “Palestinians have said when they were interrogated that they continued terrorism in order to go to jail and get more money.

“We can pay back money, but we can’t bring back human lives taken by terrorism,” he added.

Likud MK Amir Ohana wondered: “How did this absurd situation continue until now, with the State of Israel transferring money to the PA, which engages in glorification and pays families of terrorists. This bill is part of the fight against terrorism, and the economic arena is also a place for this fight.”

Joint List MK Youssef Jabareen said the bill is “colonialist legislation at its best… The bill is collective punishment for the Palestinian population… This is how the occupation is perpetuated.”

According to Jabareen, the payments to terrorists and their families are similar to National Insurance payments: “Their goal is to help the families so they don’t starve.”

MK Aida Touma-Sliman, also of the Joint List, called the bill theft.

“The proposal says to ‘deduct,’ but really it means to steal,” she said. “This is the condescending attitude which suits occupiers who think they can continue lashing out at another nation and not admit that the occupation is the source of all injustice.”

MK Mossi Raz of Meretz argued that the bill would be a violation of the Oslo Accords, in which Israel agreed to collect the tax money for the PA.

The bill passed 52-10. There is a second version of the legislation, drafted by the Defense Ministry, which the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee is holding up, because it opposes an article in the proposal that would grant the security cabinet the option of not deducting the funds.

Again: if Palestinians use violence to fight Israeli occupation, then they’re terrorists. If they use non-violence (boycotts), then they’re anti-Semites. The real point: only full submission to Israel is permitted

“Let us call out the BDS movement for what it is,” @senschumer says, “anti-Semitism.” Adds “let us delegitimize the delegitimizers.”

“Fighting Israeli Occupying Forces Is “Terrorism.” Boycotting Is “Anti-Semitism.” What’s Allowed?”

THAT “TERRORISM” IS a malleable term of propaganda, with no fixed meaning or consistent application, is now quite well-established. Still, its recent application to a spate of violence targeting Israel’s occupying soldiers in the West Bank is so manipulative and extreme that it’s well worth highlighting.

Israel has militarily occupied the West Bank for decades (it’s also still functionally occupying Gaza, as this two-minute video proves). The West Bank “occupation is illegal under international law and the United Nations has repeatedly told the country’s government to vacate Palestinian territory.” Even ardent defenders of Israel admit that “the West Bank is under a legal regime of belligerent occupation” and “Israel’s settlement enterprise is, and has always been, grossly illegal under international law.” Despite this world consensus, Israeli settlements continue to grow rapidly. Israel is not engaged in any meaningful efforts to negotiate an agreement to end the occupation, and leading Israeli ministers now openly oppose such efforts.

    Entire article here:

    1. “Again: if Palestinians use violence to fight Israeli occupation, then they’re terrorists.”

True. Terrorism has been the method used by the Palestinians, Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran. Peace settlements were refused by Arafat. The only solution palatable to Arafat was Israel’s disappearance. Sadat made peace with Israel and the Sinai was returned.

      ” If they use non-violence (boycotts), then they’re anti-Semites.”

That is both not true and stupid. It is stupid because boycotts cause the Palestinians to lose their jobs and the ability to feed their families. Jobs and interaction are a way towards a peaceful settlement. If one wishes to boycott Israel go ahead and turn in your iphone.

“The real point: only full submission to Israel is permitted”

That is pure bullsh-t. There would be no disputed lands if Israeli existence was accepted or if any of the peace treaties were signed by Arafat. Clinton was even amazed when Arafat walked away from a deal that gave him 95+% of the land requested.

Glenn Greenwald needs a lesson in history and geography. It is this type of stupidity that has kept the Palestinian people impoverished.

    1. Actually, the policy suggestion and other discussions at the time reveal that the US was worried about an Israeli air strike on Iran’s nuclear sites and therefore wanted a policy to prevent that. American foreign policy, though appearing friendly towards Israel, has always had some favoritism towards the Arab oil nations and the Arab world. The policy was for American benefit both geopolitical and humanitarian, not Israeli benefit. Iran had and has continuously threatened Israel with nuclear annihilation and supports the terrorist organizations of Hamas and Hezbollah surrounding Israel with 100,000 to 150,000 rockets aimed at its population centers with an ability to strike the center of Israel within a minute or so after launch. There was a hope that such American intervention would be an additional way to prevent Israel from striking the Iranian nuclear facilities.

  4. Bibi won’t be indicted and neither will Trump. The chief witness against Bibi is his chief political rival who stands to gain if BiBi is deposed. Trump has no accusers except wig-challenged Maxine Waters.

  5. I noted some of the comments below and that some appeared extremely ignorant. With that in mind take note that Qatar is a terror state and is the biggest backer of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood wishes to destroy Western Civilization (see next two paragraphs) which includes many of those making those ignorant and hateful comments. Qatar is allied with Iran that has threatened to wipe out both Israel and the United States. Al Jazeera is owned by Qatar.

The Muslim Brotherhood Memorandum from 1991 entered into evidence in the 2008 Holy Land Terror Funding Trial told us exactly the intentions of the Muslim Brotherhood. I will provide just one paragraph that should make it clear who the villain is.

“The process of settlement is a ‘Civilization-Jihadist Process’ with all the word means. The Ikhwan [Muslim Brotherhood] must understand that their work in America is a kind of grand jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.”

Again, take note: ***Al Jazeera is owned by Qatar*** Some Mideast nations have already concluded and treat the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group.

    1. According to Juan Cole the MB changed their stance some time ago. Do try to keep up.

      1. When have you ever recognized the MB’s desire of “eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.”?

Likely never because you were and remain ignorant.

People say lots of things and if they are words seemingly from the left you hop on to accept them whether they make sense or not. It is clear that the MB is a terrorist organization that has never retracted what was said in the MB Memorandum. That is why several Middle Eastern states have declared them a terrorist organization in their countries and a bill has been before Congress to declare them a terrorist organization in the United States.

        1. Juan Cole is contemptuous of the American people thinking they are fools. He has been wrong over and over again. He is a sophist. He is blatantly anti-Israel and likely a complete anti-Semite. He has made many stupid statements such as “Chemical weapons are not weapons of mass destruction.” He claimed that Omar Mateen, who murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others in Orlando at a gay Nightclub ” I don’t think it probably was terrorism in any useful sense of the term.”

Take the Daily Kos biased to the left: “We tend to rely upon Prof. Juan Cole for expertise regarding the Middle East, in general, and Iraq, in particular. Recently, however, I have read articles that raise troubling questions about the scope of his expertise and his trustworthiness. To the extent Prof. Cole seems to have replied to his critics, he is scathingly dismissive:”

          David, do some homework.

  6. Anti-Israel, anti-Semites, anti-American, and anti-Civilization Leftists–like Jon Turley, Pseudo-Patriot, and Linda Jansen, love to criticize Bibi Netanyahu and Israel.

But the reality is that Israel’s government too has its own Deep State out to destroy Israel, just like the US has its own Deep State out to destroy liberty in America. Netanyahu’s Deep State opposition has zero evidence against Netanyahu, just like Trump’s Deep State opposition has zero evidence against Trump.

But, that does not stop, of course, anti-Israel, anti-Semites, anti-American, and anti-Civilization Leftists–like Jon Turley, Pseudo-Patriot, and Linda Jansen–from fantasizing. I guess somebody took their Stormy Daniels dolls away from them, and they have to use whatever fantasy material they can to get off.

  7. Attack Iran, attack Iran, oh please please attack Iran crooned Bibi in the Orange Ear.

  8. Considering the number of drones Obama used to bomb various places where the high-level of adversaries were, would he also be a war monger? By the way, these locations had civilians. We have no idea how many men, women, and children we killed.

    1. Sandi,

Yes Obama is a war monger. Like Hillary he is clamoring for war. There are organizations which track civilians deaths from US drones. The civilian to militant count is 10 to 1. This isn’t a partisan issue.

    2. You better believe Saint Obama was a war monger. By default perhaps, just doing whatever the M.I.C. asked. A marionette. And then there was Libya, Africa’s most successful nation, secular Muslim, 92% literate, destroyed on a whim.

      1. Acromion – Libya was most certainly NOT destroyed on a whim. Ghaddifi was taken out because he was going to offer a Pan-African currency backed up with gold – not trading with the petro dollar is a yuuge issue

  9. JT,

Why do you say these two war mongering war criminals are peacemakers? That just makes no sense at all.

Israel is working hard with Saudi Arabia and the US to start wars and take territories/resources from many other nations in the Middle East. Neither of these men want peace of any kind.

As of right now Al Jazeera is being pressured not to release an undercover expose of Israel’s control of American politicians. They did one documentary on the UK already. This appeared to trigger demands to shut down Al Jazeera from the other “democracies” I mean dictatorships in the region. The US documentary is going to have a hard time seeing light of day.

A book called: “GAZA” by by Norman Finkelstein would be an eye opener. The war crimes of Trump should be well known by people in the US (although that info appears to be suppressed by the world’s greatest democracy as well.

These two leaders and MBS are some of the greatest threats to peace in the Middle East, ever.

    1. Indeed, Israel wants war with Iran and it is selflessly, bravely willing to sacrifice to the last drop the blood and treasure of the men and women of America, to do its fighting for it. Why not? We already pay into their coffers every year a sum equal to or greater than the cost of their awesome universal health care which we – supposedly – can not afford for ourselves.

      1. right on BB – even as the VA is still underfunded and having major issues. Don’t count on Hollywood Liberal Dims to help out either- too busy having fund raisers for Israel’s soldiers.

Hollywood celebrities attend a star-studded gala for Friends of the IDF (the Israeli military) in November 2017. This is one of many such galas around the U.S. that raise millions of dollars for a foreign army, while American veterans often face difficulties..

        1. Big bucks casino operator Sherry Adelson T rump contributor wanted da capitol moved to Jerusalem and he got that. He and T rump want war with Iran.

            1. Don’t you think that T rump’s plan to move the embassy inflamed the tensions on purpose. He does not care for Muslims except for rich Saudi Princes that can invest in T Rump Kushner Inc.

              1. Of course it did. That was its purpose. It was a move supported by Democrats, Republicans and Bernays Sanders. They all work together. This may be upsetting to contemplate but it’s the truth.

                1. Jill – “Bernays Sanders”??? Ouch! Bernie has certainly compromised himself but that’s harsh =)

                  1. I’ll never take it back. He betrayed his voters. He did not fight for their vote to count and he told them to do as they were told, ignore their conscience and vote Hillary. He is a war monger and he voted to acknowledged Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. He is a very evil man. He is the white Obama.

              2. Of course OK (btw the liked Ken doll better) – anything to cause chaos and keep it going. And Jared is a Zionist close to Uncle Bibi.

                1. “And Jared is a Zionist close to Uncle Bibi.”

Autumn, you use that term in the fashion of an anti-Semite.

                  1. Nope, not an anti Semite – my Jewish friends feel the same. His loyalties lie with Israel and he does not care if US soldiers go to war.

                    1. I don’t care if you have Jewish friends. Your statements that you refused to back up in the past don’t lend themselves to an open non-prejudiced individual. My statement was as follows: “Autumn, you use that term in the fashion of an anti-Semite.”

My loyalties are with the US. I don’t want anyone killed and I want US policy to represent the best we have to offer. We should never be aiding and abetting terrorists and neither should you.

          1. O.K.

And hillary wants to obliterate Iran, wants war with Russia and she’s working hard along with all her resistance freedom fighters on behalf of Trump! That’s the truth OK. Quit the partisanship. See the truth. Help our nation by being honest about the oligarchy. Partisanship at this point isn’t just a lie, it’s a disgrace against the world and endangers us all. Start getting real, real fast. This isn’t a joke. I hope it’s not your paycheck because selling this nation and the rest of the world into war is truly an evil action.

There should be no amount of money, power, fame or any other sin that would convince a person to sell out our nation-none.

            1. Jill re: “There should be no amount of money, power, fame or any other sin that would convince a person to sell out our nation-none” True – and those who are caught doing so should be prosecuted. But where would one begin? The globalists have been doing this since Clinton got China most favored nation status and then continued on with NAFTA and the ball has continued to roll with CAFTA and KORUS. We can just be thankful the TTP/TTIP did not go through. These industrialists could care less about this country. Nike is one of my fav examples (ironically Obama went there to kick off TPP propaganda).

              1. If we had even a few independent people in the judiciary it could be dealt with. As we do not, I believe it is left to the people to use soul force and remove our cooperation from the powerful as Ghandi showed.

Cindy Sheehan has a march against the pentagon. That looks worthwhile.

We need to withdraw consent from this corruption.

                1. Cindy Sheehan should expose the secret unauthorized wars that T rump has expanded.

            2. Is Hills president? Nooooo only your porno sexual assault in T rump can wage war without congressional approval
Now. He has more secret wars goin now than Obamy ever dreamed of.

              1. oky doky ken!

Hills isn’t president. she still is shilling for war on Trump’s behalf. You seem not to understand that is a military/contractor run govt. Trump is responsible for his behavior in not stopping that, in fact encouraging war crimes. Hillary is also encouraging war crimes. Yes, each successive president has made things worse.

Cant’ you ever stop to see the truth in your life. What would it take? You can’t help people who have no interest in truth, that’s my experience. So keep on lying. It’s all yours. Thank you for your service in destruction of our nation.

                1. You really think
It is true that Hills and T rump are workin together?

                2. re: “Thank you for your service in destruction of our nation.” Damn! That would be worth printing up on cards and handing them out. I had dinner with Dim friends last night and it was literally like they were on a different planet!

          1. Thanks BB – vets are always on my mind lately as I read about various facilities.

        2. Ralph, Autumn is a supporter of terrorist bombs that kill school children and she supports paying the families of martyrs large amounts of money so they continue doing more of the same. She doesn’t want peace rather she wants the extermination of the Jews living in Israel. After all, this is not a matter of land for it was the 1967 war would never have occurred. It is a matter of driving the Jews into the sea that Autumn supports. She doesn’t care at all that when Gaza was given to the Palestinians with an infrastructure without anything in return that the Palestinians destroyed much of the infrastructure and attacked Israel with missiles and tunnels. The money funding Palestinian people is spent on arms, missiles, and terrorism.

          1. re: “She doesn’t want peace rather she wants the extermination of the Jews living in Israel.” Don’t put words in my mouth. I most certainly don’t support “driving the Jews into the sea”!! There are plenty of Jews living in Israel who don’t support expansion. They and their families wish to live in peace. I have a problem with the hardliners who constantly want chaos – and to be sure there are Palestinians as well who don’t want peace.

IMO – You would do well to listen to Mike Peled aka “The General’s Son”

            1. Autumn writes: “ Don’t put words in my mouth. I most certainly don’t support “driving the Jews into the sea”

Good, because that is essentially what was written in the Hamas charter and that is the solution desired by the leaders of Hamas, Hezbollah and, Iran. You seem to give credence to their ideas.

  10. Probably just a coincidence that Flynn met with the Russians, Papadopoulos met with Russians, Miller met with the Russians, Manafort met with the Russians, Sessions met with the Russians, Jared Kushner met with sanctioned Russian Banks,Trumps kids met with the Russians BEFORE Trump was sworn in. And they all LIED about it either to investigators or the Senate

“I own Miss Universe, I was in Russia, I was in Moscow recently and I spoke, indirectly and directly, with President Putin, who could not have been nicer, and we had a tremendous success.”

“You know, I was in Moscow a couple of months ago. I own the Miss Universe Pageant and they treated me so great. Putin even sent me a present, a beautiful present.”

“He’s a tough guy, I met him once.”

“We (Trump and Putin) have a relationship and I can tell you that he’s very interested in what we’re doing here today.”

“I was in Moscow recently and I spoke indirectly and directly with president Putin.”

    Contrast with subsequent presidential statements.

    “I never met Putin.”

“I never met Putin. I don’t know who Putin is.”

    “I don’t know Putin.”

Nothing to see here, right Turley? Don’t you have cars to park and wash?

      1. Rob – great article. When I first read I assumed the blockade was due to Jared being miffed about not getting a loan, but then there is Saudi Arabia who might have wanted this. Who really knows? The sooner Javanka leave the WH the better.

        1. The whole crooked T rump Kushner crew needs to leave but then da Koch’s Christian Pence crew takes over from da porno sex assaulting money laundering guy. We are screwed indeed for awhile.

          1. GIve me 10 Trumps over Pence. Dude is establishment all the way. In the meantime y’all need to move on from Trump’s sexual escapades and focus on any good candidates you can find to support.

            1. 10 Trumps would kill all da animals Assault hundreds of women and raise your rent so high you would be livin under a bridge with no healthcare.

  11. “Speaking of his interaction with Israeli officials, Graham related that they had two major requests for American lawmakers: The first one was military support in the form of “ammunition, ammunition, ammunition,” and the second was the U.S.’s backing should Israel have to resort to striking civilian targets in Lebanon, where it believes Hezbollah is operating. ”

Seriously? American taxpayers already give Israel $10.1 million per day!

When can a war be legal?

    1. Self-defense
    2. Authorization by the U.N. Security Council

The invasion of Syria was not for self-defense.
Authorization was not given by the U.N. Security Council.

Therefore by not meeting either point of criteria the War on Syria is ILLEGAL.

    1. There you have it. Even a 14 year old, given the facts can see and feel the evil.

  14. It’s time to retire the word “conservative” and provide new definition. When a lecherous, Republican President boasts of loving chaos and claims sameness with conservative evangelicals, the historical meaning of “conservatism” is dead. Finding a word inclusive of the current backers of the Republican Party, would require the tenets (1) money first before country (2) the rich above the law (3) corporations with the rights of citizens (but, not with equally liability) (4) corporations with the right to deny free speech i.e. elimination of net neutrality (5) shadow industry governance i.e. ALEC and (6) democracy’s destruction.
Creation of feudalism and tribalism to divide the poorer 99% provides the means to the ends…wait…I’ve got the word… global oligarchy.

    1. (3) Corporations with the rights of citizens unfettered by liability; Citizens with the rights of serfs shackled to rent extraction, asset forfeiture and debt, unfettered by once common now elite privileges such as Habeas Corpus.
