There was a truly bizarre scene in Houston this week when a police officer was on the ground struggling with a man who he said was trying to grab his gun. A security officer circled the scene filming with her cellphone until the officer screamed “Stop f***ing filming and help me!” Instead, she continued to videotape the scene as the officer screamed that the man was trying to kill him. The security guard was later fired.
The officer is also heard telling people “film me.”
When the officer says Miller is trying to kill him, one female bystander screams “He’s not gonna kill you . . . We all out here with cameras!”
The security guard then left the scene without ever providing assistance.
I find the security guard’s conduct (and frankly everyone standing around) to be shocking and disgraceful. I cannot imagine coldly videotaping such a struggle while an officer calls for help. However, unlike police officers who are expected to act even when off-duty in the face of crime, this is a private security guard. Is it fair to fire someone for failing to be a good Samaritan or put themselves at risk when they are off duty? This is not to say that the company cannot fire an at will employee for “good cause, bad cause, or no cause at all.” However, we have previously discussed the firing of employees for exercising their free speech or associational rights outside of their employment. Is an employee, even a security officer, required to be brave or selfless in their personal lives?

I’ve noticed that so often it is the case that where those who are howling about racism running amok in this country are middle to upper class whites who tend to be leftists or young social justice warriors having the former as parents. Lily white duplicitous individuals claim that other whites live for only one purpose, to beat the coloured man down.
According to your form of logic tauzinger, the police officer here wasn’t upset because someone was trying to choke him or snatch away his sidearm, it was because some black woman stole his opportunity to waste another darky so that he could etch one more notch on the slide of his nightstick after a Rodney King style beating. (but killing him instead)
No it wasn’t the cowardly security officer who was deserving of scorn. She was a victim, just as was the guy who tried to disarm the officer. She was the hero for performing her duty. Just think if somehow the suspect (I’m sorry, “victim”) had disarmed this officer and blew the side of his head off with a couple quick head shots. Maybe we could nominate her for a Pulitzer Prize. After all, it would capture the righteous moment when Whitey went down–in true Nguyễn Ngọc Loan style street justice.
You need to get out from behind your white picket fence, liberal think tank, or whatever echo chamber you cloister yourself within and realize that police officers are human beings and not some monolithic state of mind that you cast them into. It is not only obviously overly-simplistic, but it presents the notion that you are not capable of formulating in your mind the idea that complex nuances manifest in every person and from there learn to accept people as being worthwhile and having a right to simply live a life of their own choosing. But instead you cast these police officers in simple terms to dehumanize them so that they can be sacrificed to maintain something as valueless and ephemeral as your current political narrative. But it works well for those political types you follow so blindly, simple orders for the simple minded, the masses obey.
Next time try to bring something worthwhile to the discussion. Vomiting the same tired rhetoric, we hear it every day, and it is tiresome. Politician “A” roars and the parrots bleat it out to the masses and the tune never changes: Garbage in Garbage Out.

Repatriation would have given them a sense of rightness, legitimacy, self-esteem and nationhood.

I have heard the warning “don’t interfere with the cops” too many times to step in.
As a fireman, I have a lot of interfacing with police who are friends. I too had the same opinion as you until I was talking to one of my friend State Troopers a while back who informed me that he had a similar incident as this cop and he had a civilian help him. I told him that I didn’t know civilians could get involved and he replied, “Hell yeah, if I’m in trouble I will take all the help I can get”. I hope I would never have too but it is good to know I’m supposed too.

I would always hope the moment the officer is asking for help that any bystander with doubt as to whether they should get involved has that doubt removed.
What do you mean “civilian”? Unless the police are also in the United States military, then they too are civilians. I think the word you are looking for is “citizen.” The distinction matters, especially as police in the U.S. dress and arm themselves more and more like soldiers without exercising the restraint and discipline that United States soldiers and marines have long practiced.
Being a retired firefighter I was involved many times helping police subdue a felon, if there getting there ass kicked and ask for help as a citizen Why wouldn’t you want to help? I’d be there ASAP. Why not? Helping police doesn’t go un noticed. It might help you down the road. And honestly why wouldn’t anyone want to help? It’s amazing, in today’s world people see an emergency and first thing done today is they grab there phone, NOT TO CALL 911 THOUGH, ITS TO FILM. Wow how things have changed for the worse. PATHETIC.

Art. 2.14. MAY SUMMON AID. Whenever a peace officer meets with resistance in discharging any duty imposed upon him by law, he shall summon a sufficient number of citizens of his county to overcome the resistance; and all persons summoned are bound to obey.
Art. 2.15. PERSON REFUSING TO AID. The peace officer who has summoned any person to assist him in performing any duty shall report such person, if he refuse to obey, to the proper district or county attorney, in order that he may be prosecuted for the offense.

Jay – much as I hate to go there, bettykath is right. There was period in policing where the cops wanted to do it all on their own. Then they finally realized that they were most effective when their cops walked beats and got help from the public but the best they could do was put some of them on bikes. However, some of that “Stay out of my business!!!” attitude still remains with the public.

the cops were very humane, he had the mount on him and could have just grabbed his kneck and whacked his head on the deck a few time, then lights out! but the guy would have sued so the cops are trained by lawyers to be very gentle and restrain carefully
the guy was resisting arrest and when he grabbed that gun he almost got himself killed. the ladies in the backround knew how stupid he was and were counselling him wisely in language that he should have understood
