Happy Valentine’s Day With Lots Of . . . Professional Respect and Platonic Interest

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) noted an interesting twist for students who are celebrating Valentine’s Day at the University of New Orleans: any Valentine’s Card must be clearly platonic or risk a violation of the school’s rule against any “suggestive” note or communication. However, from a legal perspective, I would suggest the greater problem is not the Valentines per se but that chubby figure known as Cupid.

By the strict language of the regulations at various schools, a question could be raised where the giving of a classic Valentine is a prohibited activity. After all, how do you send a Valentine card that is not in any way suggestive? UNO’s “Prohibiting Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation” policy classifies “sending suggestive or obscene letters, notes or invitations” as an example of “sexual harassment.”

On one level, Cupid himself is that the personification of a “drug-facilitated sexual assault.” Long before the invention of “date rape drugs,” Cupid was shooting people with magic arrows to make them amenable to love. After all, Cupid is the progeny (and dangerous mix) of the love goddess Venus and the war god Mars.

In reality, Cupid in early mythology often employed two different arrows with strikingly different objectives. The one with the golden point created uncontrollable desire while the one with a lead tip produced aversion and a desire to flee. That added element of violence does not help any image of a Cupid being distributed on campus.

Yet, he could also change himself into a bee to inject a mind-numbing drug through involuntary action:

Through this sting was Amor made wiser.
The untiring deceiver
concocted another battle-plan:
he lurked beneath the carnations and roses
and when a maiden came to pick them,
he flew out as a bee and stung her.

Moreover, the Valentine card itself has been used as a means to express long harbored affections, often without invitation.

While not mentioned by FIRE, other schools have similar such rules. Take the rule at the Florida Institute of Technology: which includes “suggestive postings” and “suggestive or obscene letters, notes or invitations.” Various elementary schools also ban any poster or depiction deemed sexual suggestive.

If Cupid is found in violation of such rules, he will have a difficult time defending himself because these terms are undefined, a long-standing objection from civil libertarians. Cupid or his messengers would simply be the subject of a complaint and can be convicted based on purely “circumstantial evidence”

“A violation can also be established if there is circumstantial
evidence of retaliation. Typically this link can be demonstrated if the adverse action took place shortly after the protected activity or if the entity undertaking the adverse action was aware of the individual’s activity before taking the action.”

If Cupid hopes to find a defense in the definition of “protected activity” he will be disappointed. Protected activity is defined as “conduct or activity that is permitted or protected by state and/or federal law or University policy.”

Under the strict interpretation of these rule, Cupid is a violent, drug-inducing, habitual sexual harasser who prowls campuses with the assistance of predatory minions.

  1. FIRE…. mmmmmmm Failed i. r. exams Can’t rememnber ‘i’ and ‘r’. is 50 percent enugh for a social promotion?

  2. Not to be indelicate, but most images of Cupid, other than the one shown here, show nothing on his chubby little fanny to indicate that he is indeed male. And he is sometimes depicted as a baby in a diaper. Lots of mixed messages. May cause some to ask “Who Dat?!” 😊

    1. angels are incorporeal. They have no physical body, no corpse, and definitely no chubby fanny. By definition they are simply beings that serve as messengers

“Dionysius says (Div. Nom. iv): “The first creatures are understood to be as immaterial as they are incorporeal.” St Thomas Aquinas, Summa

Everything else is just gravy. If a few have arrows with tips of toxins to slay people to have a certain proclivity, who are we to argue with God’s messengers?

Thankfully they number in thousands….armed militia if you will. 😇

    1. Just Al Capone’s way of saying “Have a nice day” to the North side gang.🔫

  3. Enough hysteria and incoherence.

    Restore composure and rationality.

The American vote has been infected, corrupted and contaminated.

    Repeal the 19th Dumbmendment.

Ben Franklin, we gave you “…a republic, if you can keep it.”

    Franklin’s was a restricted-vote republic.

Voters must be lucid, capable, vested, heterogeneous and without “discordant intermixture*.”

Historically, all “democracies” have been restricted-vote republics.

Franklin and the American Founders established a restricted-vote republic, distinctly not a one man, one vote democrazy.

  4. Oh for heaven’s sake, Valentine’s Day cards are now viewed as sexual harassment on college campuses? Have my gender lost all their fire and become simpering milksops, suffering the vapors at a card?

This is not the same as stalking. A grown woman is supposed to be competent enough to handle a hopeful suitor. If someone likes you, that’s a compliment, even when you don’t return the sentiment. Treat it as the compliment it’s intended, and decline gracefully.

I read about a documentary on how this generation has a selection of apps to engage in casual sex with anonymous partners, but has absolutely no idea how to go on a date. The men don’t know how to court a lady, nor do they see any reason to. Ladies who want a serious relationship, and to be treated like they are special and not a screen shot to swipe left or right have no idea how to go about getting one.

This is ridiculous. Our culture is decaying. Feminists are simultaneously preaching female power while portraying women as incapable of lying, bearing no responsibility in a hookup where both partners are equally drunk, and the slightest hint of attraction for them will send them scurrying. Women are being portrayed as feeble minded.

This is an insult to my biological gender.

    1. Want to be stalked? Just go to the Costco (Pentagon City).

Like that one time, when you’re just trying to get some groceries, and you keep seeing the same guy, who may, or may not be, following you around the store.

So, you make a b-line for the women’s clothing section. But he pops up right next to you in the women’s clothing section.

Eventually, he introduces himself. He wants to shake your hand. You’re not rude, so you obliged.

But then, it turns into him not wanting to let go of your hand. Then he is grabbing you by the wrist, flipping your palm up to the ceiling, and staring at your palm intensely.

He proclaims what lovely hands you have.

You literally have to request your hand back at this point. And the guy is refusing to let go of your hand.

The introduction just took a dark and bizarre turn.

Now, he is asking you if you want to go to dinner sometime with him.

      True story.

Ladies don’t need college to be harassed…they can get that at any Costco, or a Starbucks, as well as many other places.

      1. Or that other time, when the young man in the black government SUV, almost ran you off 395-S, because he wants to wave at you repeatedly, and take your photo with his cell phone (going 70-75 mph, parallel to each other in the lanes).

He certainly got my attention, but not the good type. I certainly did not know him.

In sum: I think most women have some story to tell you about “that time when…”

I, mostly certainly, have more “stories” than fingers on my two hands. And I would like to think that most other women do too.

But these are strangers, in public, on any given day of the week. Not on a college campus.

      2. There are 324 million people in the US. A certain percentage of them are unstable, psychopaths, or anti-social. A certain percentage of men and women. I have known men who had desperate girls crawl under their garage door, get into their bedroom, and refuse to leave. Women who threatened to throw themselves through a window because a guy broke up with them. I have personally known several women who deliberately got pregnant with a guy who wanted to break up with them.

The reality of life is that you have to be prepared to deal with bad people. It could be the backstabbing coworker, the bully at school, or the freak who wants to assault you. There are also nice men and women who simply misunderstand your cues.

The reason why they talk about sexual assault so often on college campuses is because young people + excessive alcohol = trouble. Inhibitions are lowered, and people sleep with people they later regret. Sometimes both people are equally drunk and they are both at fault. Sometimes one person, male or female, is relatively sober and takes advantage of a drunk person. No one deserves to be assaulted. There are things young people can do to reduce the chances of that happening. Morning after regrets should not be treated the same as assault. Men should not be treated as the enemy. I went to frat parties when I was in college. I was never the casual hookup sort, but it is extremely common in the culture today.

Preaching personal responsibility and abstaining from getting drunk is not blaming the victim, or slut shaming, and yet the message is often denounced by feminists and the Left. There were certain rules we girls followed when going to frat parties, and we didn’t have any problems. Rather than getting hysterical about Valentines Day cards, it would be more effective to promote a culture and behaviors that produce a better result.

  5. Putting the kibosh on poor Cupid solves the mystery of the falling total sperm and motile sperm counts in men. This is the consequence of political correctness. Thanks to professor turley for another fun and absurd legal shroud.

  6. And now for an uplifting, hopefilled, inspirational message:

    February 14 2019

Memorial of Saints Cyril, Monk, and Methodius, Bishop
    Lectionary: 332
    Reading 1 GN 2:18-25

    The LORD God said:
“It is not good for the man to be alone.
I will make a suitable partner for him.”
So the LORD God formed out of the ground
various wild animals and various birds of the air,
    and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them;
whatever the man called each of them would be its name.
The man gave names to all the cattle,
    all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals;
but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.

So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man,
and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs
and closed up its place with flesh.
The LORD God then built up into a woman
the rib that he had taken from the man.
When he brought her to the man, the man said:

“This one, at last, is bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
this one shall be called ‘woman,’
for out of ‘her man’ this one has been taken.”

That is why a man leaves his father and mother
    and clings to his wife,
and the two of them become one flesh.

The man and his wife were both naked, yet they felt no shame.

    1. Women don’t need to vote.

Women need to have babies…lots of babies.

And women need to nurture babies.

Women were put on earth to make people – people make nations.

What good is man; what good is existence, if women don’t have babies sufficient to defend and grow a nation?

America’s birthrate is in a “death spiral” – more deaths than births of Americans.

The “deep state” imports the population from foreign countries.

In 100 years, there won’t be an American left in America.

Women got the vote; women got abortion; America got a death sentence.

Women have committed the highest treason – killing America.

Women will rule a vacated, nonexistent country – that dudn’t make any sense.

Women finally conquered and seized a country of nothing – nothing but imported foreign invaders who will takeover from women.

You want hysteria and incoherence, there it is; the overwhelming desire for conquest of a non-replicating, suicidal, phantom nation.

      China – 1.4 billion.

      India – 1.3 billion.

      Other non-European, non-U.S. countries – 3 billion.

      Caucasians/Americans – 700 million.

      1. “Women need to have babies…lots of babies.”

Take a look at what Hungary is doing. It is interesting and appears to have some good policy.

        1. THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN’ ABOUT!!!

“Have four or more babies in Hungary and you’ll pay no income tax for life, prime minister says…”

“Hungary wants to promote family support schemes.
Prime Minister Viktor Orban has unveiled measures to boost the birth rate.
The nationalist government is anti-immigration and has fallen out with the EU over migrant quotas.”

          1. Cindy, society has moved too fast for us to adapt to its changes. Many of those changes are good but we can’t forget basic biology.

            1. Tom Brokaw said, “…I don’t know whether I want brown grandbabies.”

America may not want brown grandbabies.

              Let’s ask.

The American birthrate is in a “death spiral” and the population is being imported.

In 100 years, there won’t be any Americans left in America.

              American women are killing America.

              Women got the vote.

              Women got abortion.

              America got a death sentence.

Ben Franklin, we gave you “..a republic, if you can keep it.”

  7. This political correctness witch hunt is more evidence of the thinly veiled contempt of academia, Hollywood, media and other permanent self-declared outsiders attempting to poison traditional American culture.

  8. Valentine’s day, I think is Frederick Douglass’s chosen birthday. His mother died when he was young so all he knew was that he was born sometime in February and that his mother called him her “little valentine”. I guess that is what lead him to his choice.

Happy birthday to Frederick Douglas who as a former slave believed in equality, free speech, the Constitution and engaging in truthful dialogue, “I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.”.

He hated the Liberal ideology of the time and would certainly want to change the Progressive ideology of today.

In celebration I’ll provide a quote:

“Everybody has asked the question. . “What shall we do with the Negro?” I have had but one answer from the beginning. Do nothing with us! Your doing with us has already played the mischief with us. Do nothing with us! If the apples will not remain on the tree of their own strength, if they are wormeaten at the core, if they are early ripe and disposed to fall, let them fall! I am not for tying or fastening them on the tree in any way, except by nature’s plan, and if they will not stay there, let them fall. And if the Negro cannot stand on his own legs, let him fall also. All I ask is, give him a chance to stand on his own legs! Let him alone!” ― Fredrick Douglass

      Martha N.,
-It may be a Mars-Venus type of thing, but the “holiday” is more of a woman-favored holiday”, just as there are “chick flicks”.
Becker just exaggerated the difference a bit in that particular episode. I think that show, along with Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond, were the top comedy sitcoms in recent history.

  9. Maybe the University of New Orleans is simply reflecting the puritanical values that New Orleans is noted for?

    1. Tom……..lol…oh sure. New Orleanians are known for their puritan lifestyle…….and they blush easily!

      1. No kidding, Cindy. The Jesuits at my college called N’awlins “sin city” for a reason.

The women from balconies would stuff their teets in the faces of college kids when we screamed “show us your teets!!?

        Those were the days

        1. Estovir…….Ah yes…. I was born in Lousiana…….and our daughter went to Loyola.

  10. We need some rules of honest speech in the House of Representatives. This morning on TV there is a video of some muslim itchBay with a tent over her head (face showing) who is verbally attacking some witness and won’t let him respond. How did Minnesota elect such an itchBay and how can she be shut up?

    1. I believe you are speaking of Representative Ilham Omar’s questioning of Eliot Abrams, including his role in covering up human rights violations in Latin America. She did nothing to prevent his answers, he just refused to answer her questions. Her headwear is called a hijab or khimar.

      1. A bit more about Abrams. He is a convicted war criminal who rec’d a pardon from HWBush. He has no business being a representative of our government. oops. Given the path of our government, perhaps he is the best representative of our government. Otoh, with people like Rep. Omar in Congress, maybe we can get to a more ethical and honorable path.

        1. He is a convicted war criminal who rec’d a pardon from HWBush.

No, he plead guilty to process crimes, for which he was pardoned. Idiot.

  11. Everything good can be driven to the extreme. This ridiculous “campus rule” proves it. And, no, silly, it is nit “liberals taking all the fun out of life,” but the pendulum that was way too far the other way has been pushed a little to hard the correction way. It will drop back to the middle.

  12. Hear that whooshing sound? It’s the sound of liberals sucking all the fun out of life.

  13. I had a parakeet named Cupid back when I was about ten years old. Cupid learned to talk. His first word was (pig latin) ukFay. His second word learned was: You. I told people he could talk when I bought him.. I never admitted to teaching him those words. He did not speak pig Latin. No. That is a method of not swearing on this blog.

  14. Cannot even celebrate Lupercalia (in peace) anymore!!!?

What is the world coming to these days. Smh.
