The release of the summary of findings by the Special Counsel has left much of the country in stunned silence. For two years, millions of voters have kept hope alive that the term of Donald Trump would be cut short by a type of avenging angel in Robert Mueller. They are now left with a reality that is still difficult to process: Donald Trump is likely to finish his term as President of the United States. There I said it.
Cable programs that have spent years airing assurance of criminal prosecutions seemed at a loss for words. Indeed, it is difficult to process. Matthews are going through what is a familiar process. It is called the stage of grieving. Psychiatrist Elizabeth Kübler-Ross famously laid out the stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Judging from the responses on Sunday night, we are still a fair distance from acceptance.
Denial
For much of the last two years, many voters have been in open denial. Denial is easy when it is a collective effort. Voters quickly tuned into channels that reaffirmed their greatest hopes for prosecution or impeachment. This echo-chamber audience buoyed the ratings of MSNBC and CNN where viewers were assured by legal analysts that the evidence against Trump was overwhelming and that Mueller to set things right. As Kübler-Ross explained, people will often start by cling to a false and preferable reality.
That took an effort on collusion. From the outset, the entire theory of collusion was a bit wacky. For months, legal analysts spoke of collusion like it was a defined crime. It took months to get commentators to acknowledge that there is no such offense in the criminal code. The notion was that the Russian would collude with Trump or his family or aides to hack computer systems and then arrange for the leaking of the information through Wikileaks. One has to have a tad more respect for Russian intelligence to believe that they would place themselves at risk by colluding with Trump or Trump Jr. or a circus clown like Roger Stone. Why would they put themselves one tweet away from utter destruction? In the same vein, it made no sense to schedule a meeting in Trump Tower with half the world’s media downstairs to hold one of your secret meetings. Add to that the fact that they did not know who was going to be at the meeting and did not actually turn over the promise evidence of criminal conduct by Hillary Clinton.
Many people still seemed stuck on denial. On Friday, it was revealed that the Special Counsel had decided that he would not bring down any additional indictments. Some of us stated that this clearly indicated that Mueller had rejected the allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians. Nevertheless, on Sunday morning, House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff was still claiming that there was ample existence of collusion even if no one seemed committed a single criminal act of collusion. Even before the summary was released, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) declared that “very little credence” should be put in what Barr is saying. Others like MSNBC host Joy-Ann Reid and panelist Eli Mystal noted that Barr’s approach to the summary “feels like the seeds of a cover-up are here.” As for Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff, he has doubled down on both obstruction and collusion.
Anger
Many people however are past denial and moving quickly to anger. MSNBC Chris Matthews exclaimed “How can they let Trump off the hook?” Over the last year, such anger has increased as filing after filing failed to mention collusion and even stated that no Trump campaign member knowingly dealt with the hackers or trolls in Russia. Despite these lengthy “speaking” indictments, anger simply augmented the denial. For those of us pointing out the absence of key elements and evidence, we were denounced as Trump supporters even through our columns generally denounced Trump for his conduct. Either you were all-in on the guarantee of criminal prosecutions or you were a Russian boot-licking troll for Trump. This anger rose to a crescendo when key figures from Michael Flynn to Paul Manafort were charged with things far removed from any collusion-related crime.
Nevertheless, there was considerable advantage in keeping this anger alive. Democrats ran on the expectation that they would seek impeachment after the midterm elections. Media virtually banished all other news to cover legal analysts explaining how new disclosures would easily satisfy the standard for prosecution or impeachment.
Bargaining
As 2018 turned into 2019, the bargaining stage began. Voters began to accept that Trump might not be charged but he would at least be impeached. Mueller was now portrayed not as a prosecutor but investigator who would give the goods to Congress for a swift and satisfying impeachment. After all, many Democrats rallied voters on the pledge of impeachment and Democratic leadership continued to insist that Trump was committing impeachable offense. As I wrote before the midterm elections, impeachment was always a cynical ploy for power. Democratic leadership had no interest in impeaching Trump and no intention to do so. Why bring about a Pence Administration in which he could unite the country just before the 2020 election? They want a wounded but living Trump in the White House not because it is necessarily good for the country but it is manifestly good for them.
With the release of the summary, many have shifted to the argument that, if collusion is a dry well, surely there can be relief in collateral crimes being investigated in New York and various congressional committees. Indeed, a recent poll showed support for impeachment of Trump falling, even among Democrats. Instead, many critics will be satisfied with further investigation even if they do not likely mean impeachment or prosecution.
Depression
As soon as the midterm elections were over, the Democratic leadership revealed the greatest bait-and-switch in history. Pelosi announced that impeachment was no part of their “agenda.” The members who were howling before the election about impeachable offenses now insisted that it would make no sense since the Republican Senate would not go along. That was depressing enough, but then people had to read this chilling line: “[T]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.” That was followed by a finding by the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General that there was insufficient evidence of obstruction for a criminal case. In other words, your Trump condition is terminal.
Acceptance
We are now at the final stage were people begin to accept the inevitability of the final result. With Mueller not finding collusion or serious criminal acts, the two years of misleading and overhyped theories of criminality have come crashing down. Democrats can walk away with their added seats and the media can walk away with the added ratings, but voters are left with the painful reality to cope alone.
Of course, if prosecution or impeachment is unlikely, for many there is little to live for. Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross was not particularly helpful on bedside manner. She assured patients that such death is “neither frightening nor painful, but a peaceful cessation of the functioning of the body.” However, rest assured, there will be no cessation of the function of one body. The House committees will continue to investigate and suggest that they could yet impeach . . . all the way up to the 2020 election.

I mentioned that Mueller told Barr 3 weeks before the report was completed….or 3 weeks before we learned that it was completed….that he (Mueller) had reached and would reach now conclusion on the obstruction issue. The Special Counsel reports to the AG…..Barr had been AG for 6 weeks before the completion of the report was officially known, and probably in contact with Mueller over Mueller’s findings, and what would be in the report.
It is stunning to realize that even the esteemed HHHNN propaganda network did not have any advanced notice of when the report would officially be delivered to the DOJ, what Mueller’s conclusions might be,etc.
In other words, Mueller likely bypassed Hollywood Hill and other journalistic giants and actually reported to the DOJ, and not HHHNN, about the pending delivery of the report and it’s likely content.
This claim that Barr-Rosenstein slapped this report together over the weekend and sanitized it to benefit Trump is a replay….actually a continuation…of the non-stop, petty whining we’ve been seeing for over two years now from the TDS loons.

Without seeing the actual document, nothing is factually silly. In the law, there is an evidentiary principle known as the Best Evidence Rule. Under this principle, where the contents of a writing are material, we need to see the writing itself, rather than settling for secondary evidence of its contents. Mueller’s report is the writing; Barr’s letter is secondary evidence. Cough up the writing.

As for Mueller’s decision not to make a decision on obstruction, that is an indication to that he was unsure of the merits of pressing that issue.

While the belief that Republicans are trying to suppress the Mueller report may be comforting in some respects, it does not happen to be true.
The initial belief that the Mueller report would be devastating for Trump were not borne out in the Barr-Rosenstein summary.
So the fallback position, or one of them, is that the damaging information is in the report, and Barr-Rosenstein glossed over some sort of bombshell revelations that are in the report.
And that Republicans are in on the plot to keep the alleged bombshells under wraps.
It was inevitable that many on one side or the other would not be pleased with the basic conclusions of the Mueller investigations.
But the spin that the actual report contradicts the Barr-Rosenstein summary is really a stretch in dealing with that disappointment.
There was no Jaworski report. The report was completed under the aegis of his successor, Henry Ruth. And, yes, a report was released in the fall of 1975. (Portions of it may have been redacted).
Jaworski created a document dubbed The Road Map that contained evidentiary exhibits from the grand jury and descriptions of their significance. Jaworski asked Judge Sirica to release The Road Map under Rule 6(E) and forward it to The House Judiciary Committee under Rudino. Sirica did so. Nixon did not contest it because he had already lost the White House tapes decision at the Supreme Court.

If it’s legit for her to emphasize the speed with which the Start report was made public, it’s legitimate to respond to that by providing decades-long delay in releasing the Jaworski Special Prosecutors report on Watergate.
That provides another example, and if the intent of mentioning the Start report was to pretend that 2 days was the standard, THE precedent for the time interval between completion and release of the report, that attempt is misleading.
Looking at more than one example does provide some balance; that is wasted on an unbalanced propagandist like Loon4Breakfast, but it’s still worth mentioning.
There have also been numerous revisions of the Special Prosecutor/Independent Counsel/Special Counsel procedures over the past several decades; certainly since the Watergate era.

One may reasonably ask: What was that all about? That the opposition simply wanted to “get Trump” is an insufficient explanation for the scale of this obsession. Nor is it sufficient to say the opposition emerged from Mr. Trump’s rhetoric about immigrants and such.
None of that explains why so many once-sober Federal Bureau of Investigation bureaucrats went rogue in 2016. It doesn’t explain why after the election professional Democrats formed themselves into what they called “the Resistance,” as if suddenly they’d all become characters in “Les Misérables.”
Something snapped in the opposition’s psyche. They started wailing about “our democracy.” The panic over this presidency became Trump Derangement Syndrome.
A point arrived in the past year when any serious observer could have sensed that the Russian collusion narrative was losing elevation. The Beltway media divisions had chased the story’s Russia strands since January 2017 but failed to push it past peripheral figures in the Trump orbit, such as George Papadopoulos, or Roger Stone’s fever swamps.
You would have thought the Democrats might have started months ago to prepare their side for a soft landing. Instead, they took their midterm election success, with anti-Trump sentiment evident in many suburbs, as proof—however disconnected from political logic—that Robert Mueller’s prosecutors would deliver the president to them on a platter.
Now what? In the past 48 hours, some Democrats have started to recover from the Mueller neutron bomb. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is attempting to “pivot” to health care. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, is promoting its For the People agenda, which virtually no one has heard of.
The Pelosi pivot makes sense—unless Trump Derangement Syndrome is a habit that can’t be kicked. Is Rachel Maddow now going to do nightly riffs on the details of For the People? I don’t see a lot of late-night laughs in Rep. Rosa DeLauro’s pay-equity bill.
There may be one rationale for restarting Trump derangement with House hearings on whatever obstruction-of-justice crumbs the Mueller report reveals: It likely would enrage Mr. Trump and move him off the high of his Mueller win and back into the gutter with Messrs. Nadler and Schiff. Mrs. Pelosi knows how to play good-cop/bad-cop.
As to the media, they’ll be back. Watch for CNN’s Jim Acosta to test the Trump temper eventually. The not-crazy goal of reviving Mr. Trump’s road rage would be to separate him from the disaffected suburban voters who this week are giving him a second look.
Meanwhile, the AOC Effect isn’t going to disappear. If little else, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has proved that a tension now exists in politics between traditional policy substance and social-media emoting. Social media gets prime time. Straight policy gets next to nothing.
Still, Mitch McConnell’s forcing Senate Democrats into an embarrassing “present” vote on AOC’s Green New Deal suggests social-media pipe dreams aren’t ready yet for the reality of congressional vote-counting.
But what Congress does may be diminishing in importance if the big prize is winning the presidency, which itself is becoming more dependent on shaping mass opinion by using the skill sets of social media—and all that implies for our politics. Especially for the Democrats.
One thing it implies is you don’t have to be substantive or even serious. See the Beto O’Rourke phenomenon. His candidacy seems to be about attaching his persona to a political demographic whose main concern is feeling good about feeling good about themselves—and various vague beliefs. He didn’t originate the idea.
It also implies that a Democratic presidential candidate must conform to social media’s progressive values, on display this week in Joe Biden’s incredible grovel about how “the white man’s culture” has “got to change.”
One verity in our politics existed before the Mueller era and remains: Donald Trump is the incumbent U.S. president. History shows incumbent presidents are very hard to defeat. Defeating this one, derangement and all, just got harder.”

Now, 22 months and $25 million later, it might be useful for the citizens to focus on the shenanigans that caused this costly debacle – corruption in the Justice Department, collusion between employees in the Justice Department and the FBI, and an irresponsible media. What happened in the FISA court? It looks like a fraud on the court to many of us attorneys who take the Rules of Professional Responsibility seriously. It has been a costly and unfortunate civics lesson. Where is the accountability?

A 1995 pitch, sent when the SPLC was sitting on more than $60 million in reserves, told potential donors that the “strain on our current operating budget is the greatest in our 25-year history.” All sorts of tricks were tried, and a former Dees associate reported that the organization once used about six different low-value stamps on envelopes, to give the appearance that it could barely afford to cobble together 35 cents of postage.
In fact, when you actually look at the hate map, you find something interesting: Many of these “groups” barely seem to exist at all. A “Holocaust denial” group in Kerrville, Texas called “carolynyeager.net” appears to just be a woman called Carolyn Yeager. A “male supremacy” group called Return of Kings is apparently just a blog published by pick-up artist Roosh V and a couple of his friends, and the most recent post is an announcement from six months ago that the project was on indefinite hiatus. Tony Alamo, the abusive cult leader of “Tony Alamo Christian Ministries,” died in prison in 2017. (Though his ministry’s website still promotes “Tony Alamo’s Unreleased Beatles Album.”) A “black nationalist” group in Atlanta called “Luxor Couture” appears to be an African fashion boutique. “Sharkhunters International” is one guy who really likes U-boats and takes small groups of sad Nazis on tours to see ruins and relics. And good luck finding out much about the “Samanta Roy Institute of Science and Technology,” which—if it is currently operative at all—is a tiny anti-Catholic cult based in Shawano, Wisconsin.
The SPLC doesn’t actually link to or provide details about many of the groups it profiles, perhaps because this would reveal what a joke many of them are. When it does dive deeper, the results are often predictably comical. The Georgia map lists something called “Wildman’s Civil War Surplus and Herb Shop” as a “hate group.” The SPLC evidently sent a reporter to Kennesaw to investigate the group, which turns out to consist entirely of a bearded old bigot who runs a Confederate memorabilia shop. The Center ran a full profile of the man, with the headline “RACIST KENNESAW, GA. SHOP OWNER EMBRACED BY COMMUNITY.” How, exactly, was he “embraced by the community”? Here is the sum total of the evidence:
In 1993, the Kennesaw Historical Society awarded him its first Historic Preservation Award, a fact noted on the society’s website (although there’s nothing there about his racism). In 2002, Myers appeared as Clara’s uncle in a performance of “The Nutcracker, Kennesaw Style.”
This whole SPLC set-up strikes me as fraudulent in the extreme. I don’t know how else to describe it. They have a team of people investigating these groups. They have to know that they’re inflating the danger. They know that when they report “over 1,000” hate groups in America, they’ve deliberately excluded membership numbers in order to sound as scary as possible. They’re perpetrating a deception, because they don’t want you to know that groups like the “Asatru Folk Assembly” are no political threat. The SPLC has continuously sent out terrifying lies to make old people part with their money. They’ve become fantastically wealthy from telling people that individual kooks in Kennesaw are “hate groups” on the march. And they’ve done far less with the money they receive than any other comparable civil rights group will do. To me, this is a scam bordering on criminal mail fraud. If you tell people things that aren’t true so that you can take their money and then not use that money for the thing you said you would use it for, you’re a fraudster. I hestitate to say that because I know lots of great people who have worked at the SPLC, and good work is done there. But the Morris Dees model is a scam: It finds as much “hate” as possible in order to make as much money as possible.

Took me all of half an hour to come to terms with the fact that Trump won the election. Saw how things were headed when I went to bed, woke up to the news that Obama was inviting Trump to the WH. I said a year ago that it’s unlikely that the Orange Swamp-Thing (“I was an insider; I got everything I wanted”) colluded.
Rather, he was and is tangled in a financial web with Russian oligarchs because the con-artist had lost access to American banks. And so it’s possible that that leverage continues, which causes the ever-melting bag of potatoes to treat Putin a tad more kindly than deserved, as Putin controls said oligarchs.
There were 34 indictments, including Trumpy’s national-security advisor, personal attorney, and campaign chairman. Witches were hunted and found. And it was never unreasonable to investigate the buffoon, in light of the company he kept, or actually, employed, on his behalf.
In terms of obstruction, I’d rather read that segment of the report than rely on Barr’s interpretation of it. It’s possible Mueller intended Congress to decide whether to proceed based on the information collected, and not the AG.
But, for now, President Barf was not an explicit asset of the Russian government: so, hooray? If that is a victory, the bar has been dropped barely above ground-level. There is more than enough policy to go after, for 2020. The notion that it’s all over for Democrats dismisses the last two years of stupid policies, empty gestures, lies, and deregulated swamp enhancement.
A few times I have provided a list of non- Russian financial institutions Trump does business with, including borrowing for Trump projects.
Those institutions include The Bank of China and a publically traded U.S. hedge fund.
I won’t bother posting links to them because there will still be unsubstantial claims that Trump is limited to Russian banks for funding.

Intelligent observers always said there had to be evidence of a criminal conspiracy accompanying the act of collusion for their to be an indictment, which BTW there couldn’t be of a sitting president. The “money predictor” didn’t work out in the 2016 presidential election….Hillary outspent Trump by about a 2-to-1 margin.
Doug Jones did outspend Roy Moore by at least 5-to-1 on campaign advertising; that lopsided number and the 11th hour accusations resulted in a narrow Jones victory in a Red State.
Overall, in most races, campaign funding is a factor. But I’m not sure that it is as great of a factor as he claims.

Again, there seems to be a strong belief by some that Barr-Rosenstein- The DOJ somehow “sanitized” yet-unseen conclusions of the Mueller report that incriminate Trump, or at least vastly understated incriminating evidence to be found in the Mueller report.
That assumption involves the conviction that Barr and Rosenstein put themselves hanging out there as targets when the “true” summary or complete text of the Mueller report comes out.
That seems very unlikely, but if there is “a need to believe” that, some will cling tightly to that belief

I specifically said now and in months past – haven’t been here that entire time – that collusion is not a crime unless it rises to a level of provable criminal conspiracy. There is a qualifier in the sentence which Barr quotes which will be interesting to read, but it is a known fact that the top people in Trump’s campaign met with Russians tied to the Kremlin who offered dirt on Hillary to which Don, jr responded “great” or something similar. We don’t know what happened at the meeting but the President saw fit to personally concoct a cover story (his own lawyers confirmed this) and the meeting was never reported by the campaign to the FBI or anyone else, even after the campaign was briefed on Russian attempts to influence the election. At one point in the campaign Trump exhorted his Russian allies to continue breaking the law by hacking private emails of opponents. Later the president invited Russian diplomats into the oval office where he was photographed grinning ear to ear with them after relaying gleefully his firing of Comey. Since his election he has done nothing to further investigations or deterrence regarding the Russian interference and in fact at a public press meeting in Helsinki he took the side of the Russians against his own intel agencies regarding Russia’s involvement. He has at all times sought to protect his Russians allies on this, nor do we know whatever else he and Putin have agreed to in their private meetings with no US note takers, if any US personnel at all.
They have a false theory of the crime–also known as a straw-man fallacy–that unless the Trump campaign solicited the GRU hack of the DNC, DCCC and Podesta emails, then there was no crime. The straw-man fallacy is standard practice with these people. Just look at Turley calling us all crazy people for supposedly believing that Mueller was somehow going to prove that Trump personally solicited the GRU hack of the DNC, DCCC and Podesta emails. That’s not what any of us believed that Mueller was going to prove. But they have to accuse their adversaries of delusional beliefs in order to deny what Trump actually did in the 2016 election. And then they have to suppress the Mueller report to backstop their denial of what Trump actually in the 2016 election.

There were a number of people counting on the contents of the Mueller report to severely damage or destroy the Trump Presidency.
All indications are that it will not meet those expectations and high hopes, so now those who need to see that result will turn their hopes to the Lipo Nadler’s Subpeona Cannons or some devastating news from the SDNY.
If nothing significant develops from either of those, then I suppose it will still be “clear to” those who need to cling to their beliefs that the lack of evidence does not mean that “the lack of evidence is does not mean to that evidence is lacking”, spout similar lines.

The summary of the Mueller report uses the legally correct term, “conspired” in place of the legally incorrect term “colluded.” Barr’s summary also makes use of the term “coordinated” that Rosenstein had put in Mueller’s appointment authorization because Comey had used the term “coordination” to describe the ongoing FBI investigation that he had authorized before he was fired. Comey told Congress that “collusion” is not a word that he would use. And neither Rosenstein nor Mueller, nor even Barr, have used the term collusion. Guess who uses the term “collusion” incessantly?
