Merriam-Webster seems to have found the bizarre controversy over President Donald Trump’s insistence that he was right that Hurricane Dorian was on a path to hit Alabama on September 1st. Trump continues to tweet about being right while the Washington Post is reporting that, despite Trump’s denial, he was the person who altered the hurricane path map with a Sharpie. So Merriam-Webster tweeted the definition of mumpsimus, or “A stubborn person who insists on making an error in spite of being shown that it is wrong.”
It appears that the term originated with an illiterate priest who accidentally said “mumpsimus” rather than “sumpsimus.” The stubborn priest refused to be corrected and continued to use the word to mean “we have taken” in Latin.
As if to prove the point, Trump continued to issue tweet after tweet saying that he was right after all. The Weather Service was forced to correct its own forecast information that contradicted Trump and a national security official was pushed forward to support Trump’s account as part of six-days of effort by the White House.
Trump also called in Fox News White House reporter John Roberts to convince him that Trump was right all along. Roberts later wrote a memo to Fox to describe the scene.
It is all . . . well. just too mumpsimus.

‘He’s losing his s—‘: Trump’s advisers are increasingly worried about his mental state following days of erratic behavior
https://www.yahoo.com/news/hes-losing-trumps-advisers-increasingly-202200411.html
yyy – if Trump’s advisers are worried about him think how worried the Biden advisers must be. Unnamed sources have been used for this comment.
The advisers would have to be unnamed. nothing unusual about that. Granting anonymity is appropriate when the source can’t speak on the record without losing his job.
I agree with you about Biden’s advisers. They’re probably advising him to say less and be seen less. He’s not quite a stable genius.
yyy – the problem with unnamed sources is that they may not actually exist. It is a convenient dodge.
It’s not a dodge if the sources do exist, are speaking truthfully, and could not speak openly without risking punishment. Granting anonymity under those conditions is an essential part of journalism. You must know that.

yyy – But always, anonymous sources are the road to the ethical swamp FIFY
Much ado about nothing, and now Mirriam Webster is merrily jumping on the band wagon.
Trump was in fact informed that Alabama was in danger, and his warnings were made out of concern. It was unreasonable for the media to jump all over him for it. It turned out to be true that it was, indeed, in the original forecast that the media claimed never happened. It is also true that Trump had a hand drawn map to show the original forecast.
Honestly, in today’s day and age, we have got to be a spoiled, entitled, blissfully safe group of people to choose this issue to get worked up over. There are people without enough food or water, or rotting in a cell for their speech, and we’re supposed to be outraged that Trump tried to warn Alabama which may, or may not, get impacted by a hurricane?
I am suffering manufactured crisis fatigue.
Are we supposed to care that Trump told us he was initially informed that Alabama might get hit, and that he held up a map showing it, just like weather forecaster mark up maps all the time? Who. Cares.
All day long, the media, activists, politicians, hollywood, and all the other extremists have hammered with one false accusation after after – Nazi, Fascist, Anti Semite, idiot, dementia, heart disease, Koi killer, Russian spy, will nuke Korea, is too nice to Korea, not qualified to have the nuclear codes…These are the same people who wonder why Trump defends every little misstep to the bitter end, and fights to get acknowledgements of journalist mistakes with every atom? Gee, don’t know why he hates the press. They are so unbiased, reasonable, and accurate.
Karen, you wish it was much ado about nothing. Here’s the news.
1. Your cult leader has no regard for facts and his followers like you – and his political appointees who head the NOAA and the Commerce Dept. – will bend over backwards to confirm whatever fantasy he comes up with.
2. The unsigned NOAA letter, which has been denounced by it’s past head among others for corrupting the agency and it’s reputation, is even more alarming than the president’s self centered tantrum of the last week. Our previously respected, non partisan, and technical services are being politicized for the worst of reasons. This is in dictator territory for the subjugation of the people’s government to prop up the Dear Leader. Disgusting.
3. The facts remain that the cone NEVER included Alabama and at the time Trump made his initial error – no big deal, issue a short correction from staff and move on – the cone was 200 miles from Alabama and heading away from it.
If you buy this horses…t you’ll buy anything from this lying, self centered, low life.
But I guess we already knew that.
Anon1 – as I told you before, CNN reported it.

NOAA’S ‘UNSIGNED’ STATEMENT COMES 5 DAYS AFTER TWEET
POLITICAL PRESSURE STRONGLY SUSPECTED
The parent agency of the National Weather Service said late Friday that President Trump was correct when he claimed earlier this week that Hurricane Dorian had threatened the state of Alabama.
The surprise announcement in an unsigned statement by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration essentially endorsed Trump’s Sunday tweet saying that Alabama will “most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated.”
After the president’s tweet, the National Weather Service, in Birmingham, Ala., responded with its own tweet, saying, “Alabama will NOT see any impacts from #Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane #Dorian will be felt across Alabama. The system will remain too far east.”
The NOAA statement takes the National Weather Service to task, declaring, “The Birmingham National Weather Service’s Sunday morning tweet spoke in absolute terms that were inconsistent with probabilities from the best forecast products available at the time.”
The surprise statement on Friday has left meteorologists across the country baffled and upset.
“Some administrator, or someone at the top of NOAA, threw the National Weather Service under the bus,” Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami, told NPR.
“The part that really smells fishy is that this is five days after that tweet by Trump,” he added. “If the National Weather Service did issue a misleading or incorrect tweet, that would need to be amended or fixed in an hour or two.”
“I am very disappointed to see this statement come out from NOAA,” University of Oklahoma assistant meteorology professor Jason Furtado told The Associated Press. He said the controversy over the president’s tweets and the NOAA statement undermines public confidence in meteorologists.

Today’s NPR
CNN weatherman reported that Alabama was in the track.
https://twitter.com/i/status/1170089069105340416
Paul you simpleton:
1. Date please?
2. Did CNN spend the last week claiming this early prediction was correct?
3. Does Trump get his weather from CNN?
4. If CNN f..ks up, does that justify the President f..king up and you claiming he didn’t?
5. Why?
Anon1 – wasn’t the whole argument that Trump had committed a felony? If Trump committed a felony, then CNN did, both the weatherman and Lemon. I am not sure of the date because the Prez tweeted it out. If I were CNN, I would be hiding in the basement, Now, CNN has to explain this.
Paul, no the argument is not whether Trump committed a felony, but even if it was, the felony is not making a mistake about a weather prediction, it is purposefully altering charting tools as Trump did with his sharpie.
The argument is about the fact that Trump pays little attention to reality and if it is brought to his attention that he erred, he will insist he is correct in the face of all evidence, and then Paul will back him up.
Anon1 – it’s a map. You can write on it. It is not sacred. BTW, Trump is now selling special Sharpies at his merch store. They are designed to drive CNN crazy.
Weather forecasters are shaking in their loafers all across America. Marking on a map is against the law, and you will be thrown into an Oubliette, and your Sharpie smashed in the Large Hadron Collider to ensure it can never again be used to deface government property. The execution of the Sharpie will be carried out on national television, because, as everyone knows, Sharpies are more dangerous than the hands that wield them. They must be regulated, and due to their indelible ink, their use must be sharply regulated. Loaning a Sharpie to any unlicensed individual is against the law.
Meanwhile, Democrats are crying with relief. Just like Capone was brought down by tax evasion, Trump, they say, with tears of relief running down their faces, can now be arrested for writing with a Sharpie on a NOAA map. The evidence is on video, for all to see. Finally! Now they can trigger their plans against Pence to bring him down, which should time to about 48 days before the next election. That should give Pelosi plenty of time to work before the next President is sworn in.
The level of energy and emotion put into outrage at warning Alabama to prepare for a hurricane is hilarious. I’ve really missed Monty Python. Happy to see that it’s experiencing a revival.
Karen S – is NOAA taking credit for predicting the hurricane stalling on Bermuda?
Paul and Karen, what part of “the argument is not whether Trump committed a felony” did you have trouble with?
I especially enjoyed your convictions that the leader of your cult was victimized by an obsessive press focused on nothing, as if the Birmingham NWS office is known for it’s partisan attacks. Bunch of snowflakes, those guys!
Did Professor Turley castigate Bill Clinton on a daily basis for demeaning the office of the President, using presidential influence to corrupt a young, innocent Intern, conducting a lifetime of illicit extramarital affairs, raping Juanita Broaddrick, accosting and awarding $850K to Paula Jones, ultimately having is law license suspended, etc.; all with a wife who was a lifelong, willful, criminal enabler and complicit in Bill’s crimes and immoral conduct? You want sick? There it is.
Did Professor Turley even mildly criticize the vacuous, anti-American Muslim, blowhard academic, know-nothing empty suit Barack Obama, aka Barry Soetoro, the Emperor with no clothes and no acumen?
Professor Turley, your hammer and sickle are showing.
So-called NOAA statement was unsigned so who knows who wrote it, maybe Trump himself. This stubbornness is another sign of someone with dementia. I’m beginning to almost feel sorry for the man; he is ill. There is no doubt that he has not been up to the job from the get-go due to incompetence and personality disorders, but this is different. It’s time for his family to intervene and help preserve whatever dignity he has left. (Cannot believe I just suggested that he has ever had any dignity, but still, he’s a sick man.)
” maybe Trump himself. This stubbornness is another sign of someone with dementia.”
I guess this anonymous is the serial liar rather than just a liar. Your persistent stubborness regarding Richardson and reliance on a fabricated lie to prove yourself right when you were wrong one can’t really trust you. I don’t accuse you of dementia. I think your problem is you were born with a bad brain.
The Donald “snowflake” Trump
With all due respect, of course.
Sometimes a tweet is just a tweet.
Of course Trump was proven to be right. President Trump is fighting hard against the Liberal (and oh so condescending elitterati—I’ve just invented a new word that can now be added to this travesty of a Dictionary) TDS stricken Press Corp that can’t sleep at night without a good, strong fix of Fake News.
Risk, Trump said last Sunday:
“”In addition to Florida – South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama, will most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated,”
That was completely false regarding Alabama as noted by the Birmingham NWS office within a half hour.
Trump was proven wrong, an insignificant event until he threw a week long temper tantrum in the midst of a national emergency.
“most likely” is different than certainly,
“be hit (much) harder than anticipated,” is relative .
Learn English.
“most likely” means better than 50%. That was false concerning Alabama.
“be hit (much) harder than anticipated,”. That was false concerning Alabama
Opinion is not fact. The cone is the most likely scenario but it isn’t better than 50% correct. It moves all over the place. Though I appreciate Trump looking at the potential areas and wishing those people to be safe I don’t equate that with a weather report. Only very small people think like you do while they bit.ch.and moan. I think you should have said “your welcome” if you live in any of those states.
“hit (much) harder” is relative so one really can’t comment on what that really means. It wasn’t false. While the cone changed positions Puerto Rico was smack in the center of the cone. If the President said you will be hit less than expected he would have been correct.
All you are demonstrating is your lack of ability to think and deal with things reasonably. Your brain is filled up with hate and anger that Trump won and Hillary lost.
Allan’s complaint is with the Birmingham NWS office , not previously known as enemies of his cult.
You lie. I have no complaint with Birmingham. They had their opinion and Trump had his. The problem is with people like you who make big issues out of non issues and lie.
Risko…….elitterati. Wonderful word!
It would be difficult to find someone who dislikes Trump more than I do, but I stopped using Merriam-Webster as my go-to dictionary when the company decided that it would get involved in politics by issuing definitions of particular words which Kellyanne Conway had used.
OT: They are getting closer.

We just released the transcript of a major court hearing (held last week) in which U.S. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth granted significant new discovery to us on the Clinton email issue (Judicial Watch v. U.S. Department of State (No. 1:14-cv-01242)).
During the hearing, Judge Lamberth specifically raised concerns about a Clinton email cache recently discussed in a letter to Senator Charles Grassley (R-IA) and wants us to “shake this tree” on this issue.
[J]ust last week, the Senate’s – Senate Finance and Homeland Security Committees released documents revealing that Clinton IT aide Paul Combetta copied all but four of the missing emails to a Gmail account that does not appear to have ever been reconstructed and searched. The court thinks Judicial Watch ought to shake this tree.
Judge Lamberth also criticized the State Department’s handling and production of Clinton’s emails in this case stating, “There is no FOIA [Freedom of Information Act] exemption for political expedience, nor is there one for bureaucratic incompetence.”
In the beginning of their oral arguments, lawyers for the State Department wrongfully stated that we could no longer continue their discovery. The court stopped their arguments stone cold:
STATE DEPARTMENT: … it is, of course, Judicial Watch’s burden to explain to Your Honor why there has been good cause to reopen discovery now that discovery has closed in this case.
THE COURT: Well, I didn’t close discovery. So your premise is wrong.
STATE DEPARTMENT: Fair enough, Your Honor. Whether you want to call it closed or not, it is still —
THE COURT: I didn’t close it. I said I would have a status after they took this initial discovery, and that’s what I’m doing today. I didn’t close discovery.
STATE DEPARTMENT: That’s right, Your Honor, but it is still Judicial Watch’s —
THE COURT: So they don’t need any good cause —
STATE DEPARTMENT: Whether
THE COURT: — Today the good cause continues from whether or not State was acting in good faith, and I’ll tell you everything they’ve discovered in this period raises serious questions about what the hell the State Department’s doing here.
The Court also rejected DOJ and State’s efforts to derail further Judicial Watch discovery. Judge Lamberth called their arguments “preposterous” and cited a prior Judicial Watch FOIA case in which he ordered U.S. Marshals to seize records from a Clinton administration official in a separate Judicial Watch lawsuit:

Could we coin Trumpsimus!
I think Turley has a bad case of TDS. He is or was an intellectual and that was seen in what he wrote but lately no one can accuse him of that. However, they can accuse him of being a petty partisan.

And Now, a Word From a Fanatic
I am a sick man. I am a spiteful man. I am an unattractive man. I believe my liver is diseased.
I am one of those fanatics on the alt-right and the alt-left, the ones who make online forums so vicious, the ones who cancel and call out, the minority of online posters who fill the air with hate. I’m one of those radicals whose rage is intertwined with psychological fragility, whose anger at real wrongs is corrupted by my existential panic about myself.
To know anything about me you have to understand the chaos at the core of my innermost being. I was raised without coherent moral frameworks. I was raised amid social fragmentation and division, the permanent flux of liquid modernity.
Adults in my life have not been trustworthy. Friends have not been trustworthy. Women reject me. I passed through school unseen. You have no idea how ill equipped I am to deal with my pain. I was raised in that coddling way that protects you from every risk except real life.
When I was younger my eyes pleaded: Tell me what adulthood and manhood are supposed to look like! All you said was, “You can be anything you want to be!” How does that help? You told me I was special, but the world goes on as if I don’t exist.
I yearn for order. Blunt simplicities. Politics provides the Manichaean binaries I can’t find anywhere else, and so I make everything political. Own the libs! Smash the racist right! A war of pure good and pure evil.
I crave the single narrative that will make everything clear: Everything is race. Everything is class. Everything is moral rot caused by godlessness. They say that fundamentalism is rigid and authoritarian. I say to them: Yes! I want fundamentalism. Please wrap me in that rigidity. Otherwise, I have no coherent self.
Catastrophizing is my mind-set. Catastrophizing is pure: Society is totally corrupt. The “system” is totally rotten. I am terrified by ambiguity and ambivalence, the idea that the glass might be only half full. I seize on the extreme example of anything and take it to be the typical case. In this way I create my truth. An immigrant committed murders, so immigrants are murderers.
People are not defined by individual traits but by group ones. Individual persons are too complicated, but groups are abstract and easy to stereotype. Every human being gets reduced to some category, preferably the cunning ones I despise: the libs, white males.
I need leaders and spokesmen who will never show uncertainty. I want leaders who tell simple blame stories. It’s the bankers! It’s the immigrants! I want intellectual put-down artists who will crush the other side and let me vicariously enjoy their triumphs on YouTube again and again.
My moral system is simple, too. Up is evil and down is good. People above me on the status hierarchy are venal, while those of us in my group are victims of their corruption. The existence of any hierarchy itself is prima facie proof of injustice.
From the abstract vantage point of my computer screen, I see a world in which my opponents are elite oppressors and my kind are oppressed. They have their exclusive cliques and I am disdained. And here we get to the ultimate injustice: Why are they recognized while I am not? This is the molten core from which my indignation flows. The status quo does not respect me, and therefore I despise it.
So my politics is not really about issues, it’s epic wars for recognition. I don’t deal with the complexities of economics or foreign affairs. I seize upon the minor missteps made by my opponents in order to discredit their kind. You stumbled? I delight in crushing you! Owning the libs spares me the terrifying ambiguity of actually getting to know one.
I’ve lost faith in reason. Communication is for condemnation and arousal. Forgiveness has become foreign to me. Sometimes you have to be vicious for justice. If I afflict the comfortable I have served justice. I don’t have to worry about comforting the afflicted. If I attack faraway wrongdoers I don’t have to worry about tutoring a child.
Online war is a force that gives life meaning. Hatred gives me that delicious simulacrum of power. Did you really think you could raise me on gourmet coffee and yoga pants and I wouldn’t find a way to rebel against your relativism and materialism? Didn’t you observe the eternal pattern — that if you try to flatten a man to the bourgeois he will rebel by becoming a fanatic?
And yet … somehow it’s not working. Somehow politics doesn’t fill my soul, bring me peace or end my existential anxiety. I have helped create a harsh world in which vulnerability is impossible and without vulnerability there can be no relationship. Relationship is the thing that I long for the most and that I make impossible. I have cut myself off from the only thing that can save me.
I am indignant. I am superior. I read Dostoyevsky’s “Notes From the Underground.” I am alone.

Welcome, Merriam-Webster, to the fake-news group.
TRUMP WEAPONIZES JUSTICE DEPARTMENT
TO ENFORCE ‘ROLLBACK’ OF AUTO EMISSIONS STANDARDS
The Justice Department has opened an antitrust inquiry into the four major automakers that struck a deal with California this year to reduce automobile emissions, according to people familiar with the matter, escalating a standoff over one of the president’s most significant rollbacks of climate regulations.
In July, four automakers — Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen of America, Honda and BMW — announced that they had reached an agreement in principle with California on emissions standards stricter than those being sought by the White House. The announcement came as an embarrassment for the Trump administration, which assailed the move as a “P.R. stunt.”
Now, the Justice Department is investigating whether the four automakers violated federal antitrust laws by reaching a deal with California, on the grounds that the agreement could potentially limit consumer choice, those people said. The Justice Department declined to comment on the investigation, which was reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The investigation comes amid a battle over the Trump administration’s effort to drastically roll back Obama-era rules intended to reduce emissions from cars and light trucks that contribute to global warming, a rollback that major automakers have publicly opposed. The administration is also considering a plan to revoke California’s legal authority to enforce stricter greenhouse gas emissions rules within its state borders, putting the two sides on a collision course.
In a clear signal that the administration intends to increase the pressure on California, top lawyers from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Transportation Department on Friday sent a letter of rebuke to Mary D. Nichols, the state’s senior clean air official. “The purpose of this letter is to put California on notice” that its deal with automakers “appears to be inconsistent with federal law,” the letter read.
The letter asserts that California is overstepping its authority under the Clean Air Act, which allows it to write statewide air pollution rules, by attempting to set fuel economy standards and to influence regulations nationwide. Those powers, the letter says, are “squarely vested” with Congress.
Edited from: “Justice Department Investigates California Emissions Pact That Embarrassed Trump”
REGARDING ABOVE:
This story got some play yesterday in mainstream media. But not as much as it deserved. Trump is actually weaponizing the Justice Department and EPA to attack California’s authority to set auto emissions standards. Trump is furious because the automakers were resisting his rollback of Obama standards.
Like rolling back emissions standards is actually a ‘national priority’ the government ‘needs to’ enforce! And now, under Trump, the EPA is more concerned with enforcing rollbacks than preserving the environment. And this thrust comes at a moment when stronger hurricanes indicate Climate Change is real.
This story is really a more extreme case of the mumpsimus Professor Turley refers to above. That is Trump is doubling-down on something stupid out of sheer spite. And in the process he is weaponizing the Justice Department and EPA for strictly political purposes
Re: above
Trump should weaponize the Justice Dept and take out Hillary but since she owns more Uranium than Russia, and Obama is butt boy for Iranians, and Comey destroyed morale in DOJ, we are going to have to accept our lot
Red hats for everybody!
Just heard on CBS local news “The parent agency of the National Weather Service said late Friday that President Trump was correct when he claimed earlier this week that Hurricane Dorian had threatened the state of Alabama.”
Hill – the argument is actually as follows.
Does a single state have the authority to set auto standards that impact shipping and transportation in all the other states? Whose purview is it to set such standards? Does a state have the authority to effectively junk its residents vehicles, without compensation?
Food and services get shipped via fossil fuels. Period. There are no nuclear powered zero emission tractor trailers. Electric cars are not zero emission. The generation of the electricity itself creates emissions.
Solar panels are manufactured using fossil fuels, they are shipped with fossil fuels, and they are replaced using fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are manufactured into the computer screen you are watching, and the keyboard you type upon. It makes medical tubing for blood transfusions and IVs, medicines, capsules, the asphalt upon which you drive, the tires on your vehicle, the chair you sit upon, the lubricant in innumerable machine parts.
Get rid of all fossil fuels, and you also get rid of wind and solar energy. And nuclear energy, whose components are also manufactured using fossil fuels.
A lot of people who haul livestock and horses discovered that their rigs were made illegal by the wave of a California bureaucrat’s hand. There is no compensation given. You simply cannot register them anymore. Before that, there were changes required to tractor trailers that made their engines have drastically reduced life expectancy, with no compensation. A rig of that size costs close to two hundred thousand dollars. You can’t get financing on a truck older than 2010. The auto market just tanked, as people try to dump their vehicles out of state. Here’s the good part – those vehicles are still emitting, just for someone else in another state, and air travels right over California.
Bureaucrats don’t particularly care how food gets to grocery stores, or how much the cost of every single good and service increases to Californians. Let them eat cake. On foot.
Automakers don’t reach deals with CA to embarrass Trump. They do it to sell cars. That’s the entire argument. If CA sets these standards, then it forces automakers around the country to follow suit. One state is forcing everyone else, who don’t have a seat at the table or any say.
For the lofty ideal of saving the planet and preventing dystopia and starvation, extremists enact laws that can hasten dystopia and starvation. If fossil fuels were abolished, and people couldn’t afford to heat their homes, they would just chop down every tree in existence. Without fossil fuels, we would go back to pre-industrial medical care, and lost most of the medical innovations of the past two centuries. Burning up the trees of the world would dry out the planet, and lead to drought, as well as put more CO2 into the air while diminishing O2 output.
I support the fight against pollution. The war must be done in a way that brings people together. Make an enemy of the people, and there will be no support for the cause. It must also be effective, and the results affordable. Otherwise, we’ll all be sitting around a dung fire, with AOC whining, well, I had to do something!
Karen, the great environmentalist, does not offer one idea in her above typically over long screed which would fight pollution, save energy, or lower carbon emissions. In an earlier thread she told us how much the GOP wants a clean environment and how much it has done for the environment. Her problem was she couldn’t list one initiative after Bush sr in 1990, or almost 30 years ago.
What a phony.
Anon – I have remarked many times, but since you have forgotten, here it is again:
Nuclear Energy.
Least polluting reliable energy source presently on earth. When Europe moved away from nuclear towards wind power, its emissions increased. That’s because lofty goals don’t matter squat. Results do.
Sorry Karen, but nuclear energy is neither a GOP led initiative for the environment nor a problem free energy alternative, the standard by which you attack every other above.
You’re a phony, finding for pollution and narrow business self interest – except for auto manufacturers when they dovetail with low emissions and conservation – over the environment every time. Your party prefers denying science to denying easy profits and you sing right along. Good luck with the youth vote.
