Impeachment Addiction? Rep. Bass Lays Out Possible Second Impeachment

We previously discussed the declaration of Rep. Al Green that the House might approve successive impeachments against President Donald Trump. On Tuesday, Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., laid out an additional plan, impeach Trump if he wins reelection in 2020 and the Democrats take the Senate. The comments suggest a certain impeachment addiction that may be growing in the Democratic ranks. Saying that you may want a do-over before it is over reflects a growing political dependence on impeachment as a form of political speech.

The comment came after TMZ founder Harvey Levin noted to Bass that

“There’s no such thing, really, as double jeopardy in an impeachment trial because it’s political. Suppose he gets reelected… and you win back the Senate in a big way. If you did that, would you be inclined to take a second bite at the apple and reintroduce the exact same impeachment articles and then send it through again a second if you have a Democratic Senate on your side?”

Bass responded

“So, you know, yes, but I don’t think it would be exactly the same and here’s why because even though we are impeaching him now, there’s still a number of court cases, there’s a ton of information that could come forward. For example, we could get his bank records and find out that he’s owned 100 percent by the Russians. You are absolutely right in your scenario, but the only thing I would say slightly different is, it might not be the same articles of impeachment because the odds are we would have a ton more information, and then the odds of that, sadly enough, is that, you know, he probably has other examples of criminal behavior.”

In fairness to Rep. Bass, there is no reason why a second impeachment could not be based on newly discovered grounds. However, my problem, again, is the insistence on impeaching by Christmas. The financial records case is moving through the courts and one has already been subject to a Supreme Court stay pending consideration of the merits. Daisy-chaining impeachments is not the optimal approach for this country when a slightly more circumspect and deliberate process could yield this evidence.

  1. I am reposting an earlier comment to summarize the crux of the problem:

I find it incredibly frustrating that so many people support impeachment, who acknowledge that no high crime was committed. Instead, I hear vapid explanations. Well, a high cream means whatever the House says it means. Going to the courts is obstruction.

I point out the evidence disproves tying aid to Biden, and there’s no response.

I ask why Biden should be protected from investigation, merely because he’s running for President, and why Ukraine should not cooperate in an investigation, and it’s ignored.

I list actual cases of colluding with Russians, lying, destroying evidence, obstruction, etc that was done by prominent Democrats, and there’s silence.

I point out that if Trump committed a terrible crime, or an evil act, there would be bipartisan support for his impeachment. Therefore, the lack of support from Republicans is not because they refuse to impeach for political reasons, but because it is unjust – crickets.

Does none of this bother anyone who supports impeachment? This is turning the country into a form of single party state. Sure, a Republican can get elected, but he’ll find no peace. He’ll be hounded by one false allegation after another, and Democrat voters will be serenely untroubled. They won’t even acknowledge that conservatives have a sincere point in their objections. Just…nothing…because it benefits their political team to abuse power. It doesn’t matter what facts or reasoning I present to you. You just ignore what disproves your narrative…which you keep repeating.

Pelosi was right, but not for the reason she thought. This is a sad day for America.

      1. David:

You have failed to address a single one of my points. Please do so.

In addition, what, exactly, high crimes were committed? Going to the court is not a high crime, nor is it an evil act. Not cooperating with the impeachment process, while the court reviews it, is neither evil nor a crime.

So…I ask you yet again. What exactly was his high crime or evil act?

I was chilled to hear your earlier answer that a high crime is whatever the House says it is. That’s straight out of Stalin’s secret police.

Also answer this. Is a high crime against a Democrat president whatever a Republican House says it is? Will you similarly support an impeachment without any high crime or misdemeanor, and accept whatever a Republican House claims it is?

Because if this is not OK if a Republican does it, it is not OK if a Democrat does.

        Once again:

I find it incredibly frustrating that so many people support impeachment, who acknowledge that no high crime was committed. Instead, I hear vapid explanations. Well, a high cream means whatever the House says it means. Going to the courts is obstruction.

  2. It’s never going to end. They will never accept the results of the 2016 election. Unless we stop them, they will keep pushing until they get a single party state.

Democrats in Congress have lost their minds to abuse their authority in such an infamous manner.

  3. If Trump wins reelection, the Democrats ARE NOT going to take back the Senate! Moreover, they’ll probably lose control of the House. Senate elections are statewide and voters who vote for Trump are going to vote for a Republican for the Senate. I agree with other commenters – the Democratic Party has committed suicide.

    1. We are up against a media that blatantly lies in order to meddle in the 2020 election.

I read on various mainstream media sources how Horowitz’s report was a vindication for Democrats, that Trump wasn’t spied on, and that it debunked a conspiracy theory. In truth, the report absolutely blasted the FBI and Democrats until their ears laid flat.

How are we to compete with deliberate misinformation disseminated on that large a scale? We have a completely brainwashed, uninformed voting pool. We have people like Benson who type that a high crime is whatever the Democratic House says it is, and sees no problem with it. There are useful idiots enabling total tyranny because it benefits them politically.

I occasionally read mainstream media, and I see nothing about any accomplishment Trump ever did. In fact, when the Mexican Canadian trade deal was finally signed, after a long delay by Democrats, they took credit for it. Your average voter has absolutely no idea if or why they are better off in a Trump presidency. There is no honest analysis of what is improved.

Journalists have resorted to outright lying. This is very concerning, considering the Democrats have put up socialists whose plans would effectively ruin the economy, destroy jobs, and lead to starvation.

  4. A second impeachment would be a political non-starter. The public is narrowly in favor of this one and a second one would not have support. They get one chance at this and I think they are wasting it. What is something far worse comes out? It so for this reason that I am not in favor of the current impeachment, despite believing that is otherwise completely justified.

    1. “What is something far worse comes out?”

There is nothing impeachable here. Zero or 0. If it were ten times worse it would be zero. 10 X 0 = 0

  5. “But criminalization of such a hypothetical quid pro quo has all but condemned both Barack Obama and Joe Biden in the court of public opinion. By that logic the Republican House should have impeached Obama in 2012 right before his reelection bid, for dismantling missile-defense plans in Europe in exchange for Putin’s putting off his annexations of Crimea and eastern Ukraine until after Obama’s reelection — in effect bestowing upon candidate Obama a private quid pro quo benefit of assuring voters that Obama’s “Russian reset” was sound foreign policy.

Candidate Biden stands accused of no thought crime, but of actually leveraging foreign aid to force the firing of a Ukrainian prosecutor who, by his own admission, later claimed he was looking into Biden’s mysterious activities with regard to the board of a corrupt Ukrainian energy company.

Obama had refused to provide needed lethal aid to Ukraine. He sent Biden to Ukraine, who used the stick of threatening to cancel all nonlethal aid in return for the carrot of not embarrassing Biden, Obama, and the Democratic party with a messy investigation of Burisma — and by extension Biden’s son — with obvious importance to the 2016 campaign cycle.

If Trump can be impeached for delaying lethal aid to Ukraine for a few weeks, then surely Obama and Biden should have been impeached for doing something worse. In other words, once presidential prerogatives are criminalized and impeachment is used for short-term political gain, then the revolutionary process takes on a life of its own and will eventually devour its own creators. In such a downward spiral, impeachment has become no big deal, but a simple way of discrediting a president the opposition hates.”

    Democrats’ Cannibalistic Ideology

    Victor Davis HansonDecember 10, 2019

  6. President Trump has turned the Democrat Party into the Tanya Harding Party. What a disgrace. Not only will they lose more seats in the Senate, they are going to lose their majority in the House.

  7. Karen Bass proves that she doesn’t understand American law or the American spirit. Hopefully the people that vote for such politicians will gain insight and throw her out of office. She appears to think that Castro was great and I think had similar ideas to Bernadette Dorn. Why is it people like her seem to frequently have some sort of relationship with Communist Cuba and Fidel Castro. Have they not noted how such a rich country supported with money from Russia leaves its non political class destitute? She doesn’t care because she doesn’t think.

She is also known for thinking that Clarence Thomas wasn’t ‘black’ and she wanted a ‘real black’ on the court to replace Anthony Scalia. I don’t think she likes the state of Israel and boycotted Netanyahu when he spoke before Congress.

  8. So if Donald Trump gets re elected, this dolt would want to impeach him again. Ahh, a true California democrat.

  9. ‘Just went to a Southern Virginia Walmart. I could SMELL the Trump support.’

FBI agent Peter Strzok text message his illicit lover, FBI lawyer Lisa Page.

    1. Republicans have become convinced that Democrats loathe and hate us. Therefore, a Democrat could never represent the interests of the entire country. It’s time to fight back effectively.

  10. In fairness to America; Bass, and the other hypocrites who have raised much more cash with “impeachment” as the code word than they could have possibly hoped for by running on their goals or their record. I’m saying that patriotism and rule of law are not present in Dim leadership and are not present in the rank and file members who benefit from the 3 year long political ad! (Brought to you by CNN, MSNBC, CBS, the former newspaper known as NY Times and the Washington Post, carrying lies, rabble-rousing, and impeachment to the people while carrying torches.
    To quote an American who isn’t a politician;
    Hard rain gonna fall.

  11. If abusing the secret FISA court to spy on your political opponents doesn’t work, just impeach them. Multiple times, until you get the result you want.

  12. Schiff, Pelosi, Swalwell, Newsome now Bass. California really is nuts and corrupt. Starting to appreciate Willie Brown who was corrupt and a philanderer with Kamala. However, he had the integrity to never deny he was getting one over on the citizens there.

    1. mespo – 2020 would be a legal revolution. However, it would be odd for Trump to win and them to take a significant majority in the Senate. The Democrats are starting to lose House seats.

  13. Bass are one of the dumbest fish species in the water. They will bite on cheap fishing hooks and don’t flop that much when you throw them on the deck. This bass looks dumb as a post. Send her back! Back to California. Not Nevada where she came from.

    1. She is a big mouth bass and should not be in Congress. California should not be in the Union. We need to build a Wall. A fence would not be enough.

  14. This has never been about anything which violated any procedural norm of political life. This has always been about Democrats getting what they want, BAMN.

    1. Ha, ha. Trump serves himself first!
Why does he love the Saudis? They pay cash for his condos! That says it all.
