“You Will See Darkness”: Meltdown of Rep. Haley Stevens Shows How Hysteria Can Be Fueled By Politicians

C-Span/YouTube

The controversial speech of Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., on the floor of the House of Representatives shows how members can fuel rather than fight hysteria and panic. The incredible scene was played out as the very task force members who she referenced are trying to rebut some alarmist predictions and estimates. Much of the nation is sheltering in place. We get it. However, Rep. Stevens seems intent on elevating not the discussion but the volume of the national discourse.

What was most notable is that Stevens was not saying anything particularly new . . . just saying it louder. Indeed, the Democratic Majority Whip was trying to give her the added 30 seconds that she had asked, but she was yelling over his voice.

Everyone is supporting our health care workers and “taking the disease seriously.” As for “you will see darkness, we could all use a bit more light from our elected officials. Once the yelling ended, Grandpa Abe Simpson seemed to have more a hold of himself in his prophesy scene.

The chair spoke for the entire nation in saying “The gentle lady from Michigan is out of order.”

  1. I guess Turley would rather feature an unknown Congresswoman from Michigan than the President who declares no supplies should be sent to her state or elsewhere where the Governors speak ill of him?

    1. I’ve seen Turley go low before, but this is rock bottom even for him.

    2. Enigma, this is what he said, “”the young, a woman governor from — you know who I’m talking about — from Michigan,” because she had “not been pleasant.”

“Now she wants a declaration of emergency and, you know, we’ll have to make a decision on that.”

And then he did declare a federal emergency.

He also said he wouldn’t waste his time calling people who just want to bash him. He should use his delegates to listen to that if it’s not going to be productive.

Do people think the government has 325 million ventilators and 1 trillion N95 masks? They have thrown this open to private industry to get more PPE and medical equipment made, vaccines, medications.

I have followed this story. The only direct quotes I could find were the ones above, about not wanting to personally call people who just want to bash him, as well as the Michigan governor wanted him to declare an emergency. I have not found a quote stating that he would withhold aid from blue states. In fact, as I’ve been following this, I have noted aid that has gone out to blue states during this pandemic. If you have additional information, then post it. As noted before, I agree with some of Trump’s actions and disagree with others re Covid-19.

Absolutely, aid should go out. Should NYC get it all? How should it be proportioned? Certainly urban areas have the highest spread.

I’m thinking prepping is going to be a cornerstone of political platforms for generations to come. We do not have sufficient supplies for a widespread pandemic. In addition, if Congress, the Administration, and SCOTUS keep meeting in person, then this is going to severely impact our government. I am also concerned about it’s affect on our military, as well as every individual American.

      1. “I don’t know if she knows what’s going on, but all she does is sit there and blame the federal government,” Trump said.

“Michigan is a very important state, I love the people of Michigan … but she is a new governor who has not been pleasant,” he said.

“We don’t like to see the complaints,” he added.

“I say, ‘Mike, don’t call the governor of Washington, you’re wasting your time with him. Don’t call the woman in Michigan,” he said at a White House press briefing. “If they don’t treat you right, I don’t call.”

He directed the leader of the task force not to call those governors begging for federal assistance. His time is spent criticizing others and not solving problems. He disregards the scientists and goes with his “feelings.” His only interest is in getting re-elected, everything he does or doesn’t do is related to that purpose. He want’s people to go back to work (and die) to get his numbers up. He’s not the man for the task.

  2. She was passionate. That’s for sure. Seems we’re in some pretty out of order of times, at least she’s reflecting the moment.

  3. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

This congresswoman is having what is commonly known as a ‘nervous breakdown’. It’s actually rather sad. I wonder why Professor Turley feels compelled to feature her meltdown.

The Washington Post has several stories regarding intrigues behind the scenes of the $2 trillion stimulus bill. It seems Republicans intended for the bill to be primarily a corporate rescue package. When Democrats demanded money for the states and increased unemployment benefits, Mitch McConnell was furious. Lindsay Graham shared McConnell’s disgust along with several conservative stalwarts. But in the end they felt pressured to grant the ‘socialist demands’ of Pelosi & Company.

    1. It’s actually rather sad. I wonder why Professor Turley feels compelled to feature her meltdown.

As an example of problems in the political class, Peter. You’re upset that this might injure the Democratic Party. Since the Professor is not a Democratic Party press agent, that’s not a concern of his.

      1. Absurd, this isnt a news story. Nothing to worry about. Instead attention has focused on Congressman Masse of Kentucky who attempted to single-handedly hold up the stimulus. Colleagues on both sides of the aisle where ready to pummel Masse. Because of Masse they had to all assemble again and risk infection as a group. But Turley featured ‘this’, instead, a story of no real significance.

Which didn’t interest you when the Speaker of the House was playing games. Correct-the-Record is not sending us their best.

          1. The Speaker played no games, rushing it through as quickly as she could after the Senate finished.

            1. As I told you, there’s always a tell. Yours is blatantly lying when it’s so obvious and unnecessary.

Repetition does not transform a lie into a truth. FDR

              You’ll never learn.

              1. The Senate passed the bill late Wednesday.

“The original intention was for the legislation to be passed by voice vote with only a skeleton crew of members needed. But lawmakers were forced to scramble back to Washington, D.C., after it became clear Thursday evening that Massie would block such a procedure, forcing hundreds of members to return and ensure there was a majority present to get the bill across the finish line.

The ability to thwart Massie’s effort was the culmination of hundreds of members of Congress, who spread themselves out among the seats down on the floor and above in the public gallery in order to muster a majority while practicing social distancing. Attempts by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to persuade him not to call for a recorded vote just minutes before fell on deaf ears.”

America has come to the current hysterical and incoherent state wherein the “fake pandemic,” perpetrated by China and its communist (liberals, progressives, socialists, democrats) allies in America, is their last resort, having failed to remove the duly-elected President, Donald J. Trump, by multiple other “fake” “hoax” means and methods. This final “putsch” by the communists produced the nail in the coffin of America as the printing of $2.2 trillion of worthless “funny money” by a nation with extant, mortal, insurmountable and unpayable debt.

    “@realDonaldTrump May 8, 2019

GREAT NEWS FOR OHIO! Just spoke to Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors, who informed me that, subject to a UAW agreement etc., GM will be selling their beautiful Lordstown Plant to Workhorse, where they plan to build Electric Trucks. GM will also be spending $700,000,000 in Ohio…”

    Yesterday:

“General Motors MUST immediately open their stupidly abandoned Lordstown plant in Ohio, or some other plant, and START MAKING VENTILATORS, NOW!!!!!! FORD, GET GOING ON VENTILATORS, FAST!!!!!!
    @GeneralMotors@Ford

As usual with “this” General Motors, things just never seem to work out. They said they were going to give us 40,000 much needed Ventilators, “very quickly”. Now they are saying it will only be 6000, in late April, and they want top dollar. Always a mess with Mary B. Invoke “P”.

Not as important as a Representative who lost their temper to some but he’s a F..ing liar you can’t trust.

    1. “WASHINGTON — The White House had been preparing to reveal on Wednesday a joint venture between General Motors and Ventec Life Systems that would allow for the production of as many as 80,000 desperately needed ventilators to respond to an escalating pandemic when word suddenly came down that the announcement was off.

The decision to cancel the announcement, government officials say, came after the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it needed more time to assess whether the estimated cost was prohibitive. That price tag was more than $1 billion, with several hundred million dollars to be paid upfront to General Motors to retool a car parts plant in Kokomo, Ind., where the ventilators would be made with Ventec’s technology.

Government officials said that the deal might still happen but that they are examining at least a dozen other proposals. And they contend that an initial promise that the joint venture could turn out 20,000 ventilators in short order had shrunk to 7,500, with even that number in doubt. Longtime emergency managers at FEMA are working with military officials to sort through the competing offers and federal procurement rules while under pressure to give President Trump something to announce….

….A General Motors spokesman said that “Project V,” as the ventilator program is known, was moving very fast, and a company official said “there’s no issue with retooling.”

      A Ventec representative agreed.

“Ventec and G.M. have been working at breakneck speed to leverage our collective expertise in ventilation and manufacturing to meet the needs of the country as quickly as possible and arm medical professionals with the number of ventilators needed to save lives,” said Chris O. Brooks, Ventec’s chief strategy officer.

The only thing missing was clarity from the government about how many ventilators they needed — and who would be paid to build them…

,,,At the center of the discussion about how to ramp up the production of ventilators is Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and a senior White House aide, who has told people that he was called in two weeks ago by Vice President Mike Pence to produce more coronavirus test kits and who has now turned his attention to ventilators.

He has been directing officials at FEMA in the effort. Two officials said the suggestion to wait on the General Motors offer came from Col. Patrick Work, who is working at FEMA. Some government officials expressed concern about the possibility of ordering too many ventilators, leaving them with an expensive surplus.

As the agency has sorted through offers, trying to weigh production ability and costs, hospitals in New York and elsewhere are reporting a desperate need for more ventilators, which are critical in treating respiratory problems in a fast-rising tide of severe coronavirus cases.

A spokeswoman for FEMA said Colonel Work presented information on each contract in such meetings but did not make any recommendations. A White House spokesman declined to comment.

The involvement of General Motors was first floated this month as the carmaker’s factory floor in Kokomo was grinding to a halt and workers were being sent home — partly because the market was collapsing but also because workers would otherwise risk exposure to the coronavirus.

Last week, General Motors, Ventec Life Systems and a coalition of business executives called StopTheSpread.org issued a statement saying that Ventec would “leverage G.M.’s logistics, purchasing and manufacturing expertise to build more of their critically important ventilators,” including some portable units.

By Sunday, Mr. Trump appeared to suggest on Twitter that a deal had been completed to mass-produce the ventilators, even though it was unclear who would pay to equip the General Motors plant or how long that process would take.

“Ford, General Motors and Tesla are being given the go ahead to make ventilators and other metal products, FAST! @fema,” he wrote. “Go for it auto execs, lets see how good you are?”

Not for the first time has Mr. Trump jumped the gun.

Tesla officials had in fact met with engineers from the medical device company Medtronic in a separate negotiation, but no partnership has yet been announced. And while the chief executive of General Motors, Mary T. Barra, was enthused about the ventilator idea, Mr. Trump’s own aides had not embraced the G.M.-Ventec partnership — in part because they had not seen the specifics of the proposal.

Administration officials said Thursday that they were struggling to understand just how many ventilators the new venture could make.

The initial projection, one senior administration official said, was that after three weeks of preparation it could produce an initial run of 20,000 ventilators, or about two-thirds of what Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York recently said his state alone needed to cover the influx of coronavirus patients expected in two weeks, if not sooner.

That number then shrank to 7,500 ventilators in the initial run, or maybe 5,000, an apparent recognition that auto transmissions and ventilators had very little in common. Those numbers are in flux and so are the Trump administration’s because the White House cannot decide how many ventilators it wants.

Targets have changed by the hour, officials said, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Food and Drug Administration, which approves the use of medical devices, and the White House try to figure out how many ventilators to request and how much they should cost.

Those issues appeared to come to a head on Wednesday afternoon, when FEMA told the White House that it was premature to make a decision.

The $1.5 billion price tag comes to around $18,000 a ventilator. And the overall cost, by comparison, is roughly equal to buying 18 F-35s, the Pentagon’s most advanced fighter jet.

So on Wednesday, despite the president’s tweet three days earlier, FEMA was still weighing competing offers in order to make a recommendation to Mr. Kushner. And it seemed clear to several officials that the agency would have to select multiple manufacturers, in part to avoid the risk that one production line runs into technical troubles, or that its workers contract the very virus the ventilators are being built to defeat.”

      He’s a F…ing liar who can’t be trusted.

        1. em, your response is the only thing funny I see here, but then more upsetting as you seem to parrot the biggest liar to ever hold the Presidency and one of the biggest in our public life. The NYTs by the way – unlike the a.shole you are defending – has journalistic standards it follows and which makes it the go to source and automatic office subscription for business and administrators of all types across the nation and the world. They can’t afford to be wrong much and have that hold up and they aren’t. If they are wrong they print retractions, something you’ll never see – let alone taking responsibility from he who you defend. He’s not worth it.

          He’s F…ing liar.

By the way, in the article – which like all reports by our better sources must be verified by credible and/or multiple sources – shows the confusion in the administration and especially FEMA which is a much more likely scenario for what happened Friday than that GM was trying to rip somebody off. If you are Republican, I thought you all believed in and trusted free enterprise. In this case the leader of the party, as he has done throughout his presidency, is publicly and loudly picking on individual businesses in fruitless vendettas. That’s not how you make deals or accomplish much of anything, though it is how you pump up your own ego and play to a crowd. Are you in that crowd? You like this act?

    3. bythebook, I’m not sure what you mean. Are you trying to paint those tweets as flip-flops? Because they aren’t. Not even close.

The President was upset with GM for closing that plant and others in November 2018 in a bid to eliminate 15,000 jobs. The plant remained closed for over a year. He was pleased to hear last summer that GM was going to sell the plant to an EV startup, bringing jobs back to Ohio. They were still in talks as of December 2019.
