Texas Case Could Produce One Of The First Corona Hate Crime Charges

Jose L. Gomez, 19, was charged with three counts of attempted capital murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. (Midland County Sheriff's Office)

Jose L. Gomez, 19, may have the dubious distinction of being the first person charged and convicted of a Corona hate crime. Gomez is accused of stabbing three members of a family of four inside a Sam’s Club. The family is Asian and police say that he was trying to stop them from spreading the virus. His victims included a 2-year-old and 6-year-old child. While other anti-Asian hate crimes have been reported in the pandemic, this one could result in an early plea or conviction.

The FBI report states “The suspect indicated that he stabbed the family because he thought the family was Chinese, and infecting people with coronavirus.” The report itself confirms that federal prosecutors are considered federal hate crime charges. He is currently charged with three counts of attempted capital murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

There is a hero in this story. A store employee, Zack Owen, intervened, tackled Gomez and brought him to the ground. Owen was stabbed in the leg and cut on the hand as a result of his brave action. Off-duty Border Patrol Agent, Bernie Ramirez was fortunately also present and rushed forward to place Gomez into custody. He also credited Owen for his bravery.

Most criminal defense lawyers would be asking for an immediate psychiatric evaluation and ultimately some form of plea bargain. This is not a case that you want to ever see the inside of a jury trial.

  1. December 7, 1941: Japanese fanatic nationals attacked Pearl Harbor. On February 14, 1942, FDR begins rounding up Japanese American citizens into internment camps. German U boats attacked our shipping off the east coast and came close enough to our coast to see the lights of the New York skyline. Did we intern white skinned German Americans?
We can’t let this happen again.

The question is whether the communists should be allowed to destroy the American economy; American free enterprise to save a few peripheral lives or whether Americans should be free to “pursue happiness” armed only with their venerable human immune systems.

  3. America having suffered a massive military attack from China, one ponders, what has the Turley blog become but a tabloid of immaterial, subculture, yellow journalism.

    Wait.

One questions, judging from the antagonists in this “tragedy,” what has America become, with its fertility rate in a “death spiral” and its population imported, but a communist collective of parasitic, abject, foreign, invader hyphenates?

Yeah, well so far Mespo the descendants of the Spanish (who hired and outfitted Columbus) and the Indians who have been here for thousands of years haven’t come up with the Black Hand, the anarchists and assassins, and the Mafia that Italian immigrants did. Ignorant bigots as late as the 1960s thought that Italians – except for the food and crooners – weren’t a positive experience in diversity and didn’t want their daughters marrying them. No its a trumpet blast that globalist identity politics is a lost cause and its adherents are dwindling both here and abroad. You’ll see a return to country-specific customs and traditions including nationalism in the form of patriotism which includes immigration and border control. You’ll also see a waning of radical stupidism at major academic institutions since about 50% will be gone if Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen is halfway correct about their antiquated business model and their insistence on quantity of student over quality of student. All in all, we’re in for a good time with cheap oil, strong borders and a return to traditional values which will have other salutary effects like progressive head explosions at regular intervals. The Wuhan Virus has had the effect of driving a stake through globalism even in the mishmashed mind of the Left; I suppose that’s a silver lining.

        1. Mespo, we’re probably in for a global depression. But anyone who thinks it will bring about positive trends is seriously deluded.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt imposed his communist dominion over free America and created a prodigious economic downturn.

Communists monetized that market correction, titling it “The Great Depression.”

In reality, Mr. Market can be knocked down but he is never out.

Mr. Market could care less about any entity, free or communist, he just keeps rolling on; left to his own devices.

FDR and his communists temporarily acquired sufficient power to keep Mr. Market down for a time.

People keep trying because they are alive.

Stocks allow participation with people who are trying

There is nothing as immutable as human endeavor in the absence of its nemesis, dictatorship.

You and communists want to influence people into perceiving your darkness in a feeble attempt to acquire personal power.

The only thing we have to fear are communist dictatorships themselves.

You will have to annihilate every last human being to “bring about” your negative trends.

Communists (liberals, progressives, socialists, democrats) in America and China are in the process of attempting that as we speak.

          2. yes, we are in for a depression. no, people who see silver linings are not deluded. one has to look forward to the opportunities as they arise to keep on living

There was once a Countryman who possessed the most wonderful Goose you can imagine, for every day when he visited the nest, the Goose had laid a beautiful, glittering, golden egg.

The Countryman took the eggs to market and soon began to get rich. But it was not long before he grew impatient with the Goose because she gave him only a single golden egg a day. He was not getting rich fast enough.

Then one day, after he had finished counting his money, the idea came to him that he could get all the golden eggs at once by killing the Goose and cutting it open. But when the deed was done, not a single golden egg did he find, and his precious Goose was dead.

I’m gonna take a wild guess that the critical component in this current battle with a virus is the human immune system not that witch Dr. Fauci believes imperative – premium treatments created by highly profitable pharmaceutical corporations. Human beings have been successfully fighting off attacks by viruses since inception. I wonder if anyone has “followed the money” in research of witch Dr. Fauci’s syndications have been in the past?

The question is whether the communists should be allowed to destroy the American economy; American free enterprise to save a few peripheral lives or whether Americans should be free to “pursue happiness” armed only with their venerable human immune systems.

  6. U.S. Reliance on Chinese Medical Supplies ‘the Cruelest Irony’
    Governor Cuomo — April 2, 2020

I see nothing wrong with this statement by the Governor. And in order for there to be irony here, one is acknowledging that this is an unnecessary pandemic caused by China who we rely upon for the medical supplies of the unnecessary pandemic that they caused. That’s why it’s ironic.

This is the China pandemic. If you would prefer to call it the China pandemic instead of the Chinese virus, that is fine with me. What it is NOT is xenophobic — a word that has been improperly defined and used for improper attacks. And here that improper definition is being used as an improper causal link to a psychotic who committed a psychotic act.

    1. SteveJ, Trump has aided and abetted the spread of the virus, so by your reasoning it should be the China-Trump flu.

However, let’s stick to facts instead of PC BS and call it what the scientific world and the rest of the world interested in solutions, not shifting blame call it – coronavirus 2.

      1. I simply quoted Governor Cuomo bythebook.

And drawing any equivalence between the Chinese government’s actions in this matter in relation to any other government is irresponsible.

      2. Book, ‘China-Trump Flu’ captures the true reality here. Since WWII, U.S. Presidents typically provided western leadership at times of crisis. But Trump devoted his first 3 years to burning bridges with every U.S. ally. Consequently the western world and Asian democracies have no global leader amid this pandemic.

    1. I wonder if these “urban youths” attacking the industrious asian man picking up cans for recycling, were trump voters or are “right wingers” by any standard?

    1. Was it a stretch that a American boy who who worked with the Boy Scouts, and joined the service named Timothy McVeigh would go down in history as the biggest domestic terrorist in US.

  7. This Incident Validates Concerns Over ‘Chinese Virus’ Designation

Anyone following events knows that Coronavirus originated in Wuhan China. No informed American was ever confused on this point.

Yet most informed Americans know that Donald Trump appeals to millions of angry, intolerant people. Stirring up those angry people has been Trump’s favorite activity since announcing his presidential campaign 4 plus years ago.

Therefore we knew when Trump insisted on labeling Coronavirus the ‘Chinese Virus’ that ‘X’ number of stupid Trump followers would feel compelled to vent their anger on Asians in this country. It was like the accident everyone saw coming from a mile away.

Therefore I appreciate that Professor Turley has (belatedly) acknowledged the danger posed to Asians by Trump’s reckless use of language.

    1. Seth Warner:

Of course it does not validate concerns that the naming convention used all this time is all of a sudden racist.

If someone stabbed an African American during the Ebola outbreak, he would be an ignorant maniac. I doubt there would be a global initiative to stop calling it the Ebola virus. Or to rename the entire genus Ebolavirus.

In fact, the proper name of the Ebola Virus we are all familiar with is Zaire ebolavirus, so that’s even more specific. Logic should be applied equally. Did you feel that Zaire ebolavirus was racist? Would a few seriously ignorant people going around hurting black people justify renaming the entire genus? No. Because that would give credence to ignorance, and justify their actions.

The crime was not justified. Pretending that origin in the naming convention is racist gives credence to the actions of a homicidal maniac.

      1. Karen, the plague now known as Covid-19 was widely referred to as the Coronavirus in western press accounts all through January, February and into March. It was only in late March that Donald Trump insisted on calling it the ‘Chima Virus’ after propagandists in China started promoting conspiracy theories blaming the virus on U.S. troops visiting China.

So your contention that this plague has been known as the ‘China Virus’ is essentially revisionist history. You seem to be cynically calculating that we all forgot it was known as Coronavirus. That calculation, on your part, is a symptom of the rightwing bubble.

          1. And if the virus came to our shore during a Democratic administration? After all, Obama was going to kill us all with ebola, and it was all Obama’s fault remember? Harsh, but true.

            1. Fishwings:

Why are you calling it “Ebola”? Are you racist? You must be racist, as calling a virus by its origin is racist, and calling it by its African origin is enhanced racism.

        1. But my point stands.

Draw a direct, proven line between the President’s use of the phrase, and violence against someone perceived to be Chinese.

If you can prove causation in one case… you just proved it in one case.

Next, you keep ignoring this, but you then need to prove that the President’s use of the phrase instigated the upsurge in violence around the globe – including China – yes, China. It’s happening there, too.

          1. em, your “point” is beneath a thinking adult. Do the words of the most powerful man in the world, which he makes sure are as widely broadcast each and every day, influence people of all types, directly or indirectly, including idiots? Of course they do.

            1. “…your “point” is beneath a thinking adult.”

              Exactly, thank you.

That’s how simple this is. But measuring even just an inch is difficult for someone who insists on using a crooked ruler.

        2. Seth:

I assume you meant “China virus”, but as someone prone to typos myself, won’t hold it against you.

The naming convention has been clear for years. There is nothing racist or wrong with calling a virus by its origin. There is nothing wrong with calling Communist China out for its human rights abuses that led to the spread of this virus.

There is, however, something terribly wrong with falsely accusing someone you don’t like politically of racism, when there is no evidence it was intended as racist. That is a terrible thing to do. Why do you do it?

The virus has been called many things over the past few weeks. Perhaps you were not aware that China, itself, referred to it as the “Wuhan virus.” It’s not xenophobic, and it’s a terrible thing to do to call it so.

Is the Ebola virus a xenophobic name? No.

Stop helping a Communist dictatorship whose propaganda counts on the good intentions of people like you. I believe you think you are fighting racism and xenophobia. But you are incorrect. The term isn’t racist. That was a propaganda lie spread by Communist China to try to make people forget it arrested its own doctors to hide an epidemic that then turned into a pandemic before they said anything.

China told a terrible, unforgivable lie and claimed that the US detonated a biological WMD in China and caused a global plague. They knowingly told this lie to save face and avoid blame because of their own human rights abuses. If you can’t see this, I don’t know how to make you understand. Fight back against Communist propaganda. Come on! You can do it!

          1. Karen, I have an Asian American in my extended family. I don’t want some yahoo assaulting, and, or, verbally abusing her. And that’s what this stupid naming contest comes down to as evidenced by this column. This is no time to be waging mindless Culture War fights.

            1. Peter – I am married to a Chinese American and it is is the ChiCom virus as far as I am concerned. I have a lot of Chinese American relatives and I do not want any of them hurt, however, China is responsible for this. Only idiots would harm your relative or mine.

              1. Paul, that’s one good reason to just call this virus ‘Covid-19’. Even Donald Trump has abandoned the ‘Chinese Virus’ label. There’s no logical reason to use it now. The world knows where this virus came from. And anyone prone to conspiracy theories will make their own conclusions anyway.

              2. Paul, by your reasoning it should be the Chinese-Trump virus, Both tried to cover it up and misrepresented actual facts concerning it’s seriousness and spread.

“Only idiots would harm your relative or mine.”

Is that supposed to give you comfort when Asian Americans are increasingly attacked on our streets. Do you think there aren’t any idiots and/or its’s not possible to stir them up?

                  1. The Epoch Times was founded by Chinese nationals who escaped Communist China. Many of them are practitioners of Falun Gong, and were persecuted by government.

I have read three articles from their publication. It consistently calls it the Communist Chinese Party virus. It has a nice ring to it. Of course, any media source that doesn’t mindlessly parrot anti-Trump propaganda 24/7 is hated by Democrats. However, I enjoyed the few articles I’ve read to date.

            2. Seth:

“Karen, I have an Asian American in my extended family. I don’t want some yahoo assaulting, and, or, verbally abusing her.” Well, that makes two of us. I don’t want anyone assaulting your relative, either.

As has been explained to you, ad nauseam, for you only to completely ignore and revert back to your emotional argument and straw men army:

              1. The naming convention of common names for diseases using origin – animal, plant, or location, goes back many years. It was not considered racist until China’s PR propaganda.
              2. Criticizing the Communist Chinese government for abusing its own people in order to hide an epidemic, allowing it to spread into a pandemic, is not racist. It also does not criticize the Chinese people who are under the thumb of said abusive government.
              3. No mainstream media source that I have ever read has ever encouraged, condoned, or directed people to blame, harass, or harm Chinese citizens, or ethnic Chinese people. Anyone who talks like that would probably be on some dark web source that I’d never read.
              4. Why are you so eager to claim that, all of a sudden and without explanation, calling a virus by its origin is racist?
              5. Why do you simply ignore the long list I have provided you, multiple times, of all of the other diseases with common, and sometimes scientific names, based on their place of origin? Why is Ebola virus not racist, but Wuhan virus is?
              6. China lied and claimed that the US detonated a biological WMD in their country. That is a deadly serious accusation. They did it to deflect blame, scrutiny, and criticism of the fact that they have arrested their own doctors to hide the disease, allowing it to spread, and they have silenced millions of other critics. It’s a Communist country infamous for abusing human rights. Trump has repeatedly explained that he called it the China virus and the Wuhan virus because a) that’s its origin and b) to fight back against propaganda that the US released a WMD in China responsible for a global plague
              7. Were you aware that Iran took China’s propaganda and ran with it, feeding Iranian people the lie that the US released a WMD in China, and that the Iranian deaths subsequent are our fault? What do you think the consequence will be, down the road? Think a terrorist or a terrorist cell might want revenge? Because you seem curiously willing to roll over and bare our belly to Communist China and Iran and every other country hostile to us that is eager to blame the US for this plague.
              8. References to the origin of the Covid-19 epidemic is a counter measure to this Communist propaganda that could be stirring up terrorists and hostile countries against us, at a time when our military, intelligence community, police force, and health care industries are all suffering personnel shortages as they become sick, as well. It’s a war, alright, but it’s not against the Chinese people. It’s against propaganda. If you don’t want to defend our country against dangerous propaganda when the entire globe is falling apart, filled with unrest, and ripe for the picking for terrorists, then stand aside. At the very least, stop undermining the country. And claiming that our country, its people, and its president is racist for demanding recognition that the plague did, indeed start in China rather than a US weapon is aiding our adversaries.

    2. This Incident Validates Concerns…Anyone following events knows… No informed American was ever confused… most informed Americans know… Trump appeals to millions of angry, intolerant people… Stirring up those angry people has been Trump’s favorite activity…we knew – that ‘X’ number of stupid Trump followers would feel compelled to vent their anger on Asians… the accident everyone saw coming… Professor Turley has (belatedly) acknowledged the danger posed to Asians by Trump’s reckless use of language…

Copious Assertions – check! TDS – check! Arrogance – check! You should work for msnbc. You meet all the qualifications.

How about this. Find a country right now that is NOT persecuting their Chinese citizens over the pandemic.

      1. em, you left out Factual – check. The rest is editorializing. You should work for Fox or Trump. Same thing.

      2. Spoken like a true Trump Disciple. You even have your own statute to worship, which you can take with you wherever you go: the Trumpy Bear! You can cuddle Trumpy Bear tonight under your American flag blanket while you tune in to Pastor Hannity’s sermon to hear all about how this is all Obama’s fault, that no one on earth could have foreseen a pandemic, that doctors and nurses must be stealing masks, gowns and gloves because someone told the Dear Leader that they couldn’t possibly be using the number they say they are, that no matter how many ventilators Gov. Cuomo gets, he’ll never be satisfied, and that the Dear Leader is right to allocate most medical supplies and equipment to states he needs to win. Then, there’s the name of this enemy: the China virus, so it must be OK to abuse, assault, and even try to kill Asian Americans, because this is all their fault–they are making the Dear Leader look bad. And, besides, they are different from us white Americans, and they won’t give in to Dear Leader’s tariffs so he can brag about his fabulously successful trade deals.

Never mind that unemployment is at a record high, the stock market is in the toilet, and we are in a recession. But if these facts (probably lies told by the Deep State and Lamestream Media) somehow cause you to doubt your faith, the faithful must never forget that Dear Leader said it was all a “hoax”, dreamed up by those evil Democrats to bring him down. So, when Dear Leader said that 15 cases would soon be 0, that it would magically end by April, that anyone who wants a test can get a test, and when Sister Kellyanne and Deacon Kudlow said the virus was “contained”, this was just to give hope to the Disciples. Dear Leader certainly wasn’t lying or bluffing because he’s never wrong and can never be wrong. So, snuggle with Trumpy Bear under your American flag blanket and tune in to Pastor Hannity to hear what you’re supposed to believe. Anyone who challenges your beliefs has TDS.

        1. Natacha, speaking of devotion – what percentage of your posts are devoted to Donald Trump, or Trumpers (ie anyone who doesn’t agree with you)?

And yes, you most assuredly have TDS – about the worst case of it on this forum. Lookit, you can’t stop thinking about the man! I’ll give you the same challenge that I gave someone else a few weeks back.

Name one positive thing that Donald Trump has done for every five negative things you attribute to him. If you’re unable to do that, you’re not being rational.

And frankly, there’s just no point in discussing anything with someone who’s irrational.

          1. What qualifies you, a Trump Disciple, to set rules for deciding what is rational and irrational commentary on Donald John Trump, much less come up with a standard that someone must meet by coming up with “positive things” about this person or be ruled irrational? This is more of the Fox News indoctrination, beginning with the baseline notion that this person is the POTUS, and is, by virtue of this, entitled to be viewed as the legitimate leader of America and the free world. Myself and others disagree. He cheated with the help of Russians to get into the White House, despite the fact that most Americans voted against him. While other Presidents have been allowed to assume office despite losing the popular vote, no other POTUS has cheated his way in with the help of Russian hackers. He has burned America’s bridges with allies and enemies alike. He is the laughingstock of other world leaders.

He was rightfully impeached for trying to leverage aid to an ally to dig up dirt on an opponent. He very likely would have been indicted if he had cooperated with the Mueller investigation. Taking just the COVID-19 crisis, he has lied to the American people, downplayed the seriousness of this pandemic, called it a “hoax”, and turns what are supposed to be briefings about the pandemic into substitute vainglory rallies, even calling the State Department the “Deep State Department”, and airing his grievances against James Comey and bringing up the call with the Ukrainian President. Falwell, Jr. reopened Liberty University despite the pandemic and explained that the reason is that COVID-19 is a “hoax”, dreamed up by Democrats. Trump’s rhetoric is one reason why Governors of Republican states refused to issue stay at home orders. He refused to follow the Obama pandemic playbook and dismantled the pandemic rapid response team. He is causing unnecessary deaths because he is no leader, and is even playing politics with distribution of medical supplies and equipment.

My comments about this aberration are based on comparing him, his conduct, his rhetoric, and penchant to lie and seek aggrandizement and praise to others who previously occupied this office. He aspires to no American values, or standards of American integrity or patriotism.

Have I gotten facts about him wrong, or mis-quoted anything he has said, in particular, in downplaying the COVID-19 pandemic? If so, cite me what I lied about. If not, then admit your are a Disciple. In any event, you don’t get to set the rules about judging Donald J. Trump.

            1. Natacha, there’s a difference between getting facts wrong and twisting them so far out of shape that they’re no longer true.

Concerning him downplaying the pandemic. Point out members of the Federal government that weren’t – there were a few, but you’re not going to like which side of the aisle some of them were on. You had Biden calling him a xenophobe and claiming he was causing hysteria for closing travel with China, and Mrs. Pelosi urging people to go eat out to support restaurants in Chinatown. I certainly don’t recall hearing YOU warning everyone. If someone failed, it was most everybody.

But your standards for “Discipleship” are getting really low when you start including someone who not only didn’t vote for him, but isn’t even a Republican, and is politically just left of Center. THAT shows just how far out there you are.

              1. What member of Congress ever called COVID-19 a “hoax”, said 15 cases would soon be 0 cases and that would be a “good job we’re doing”, said that anyone who wants a test can get a test, that a vaccine and medical cure would be available “very quickly” or the other things listed by others on this thread to downplay the seriousness of this pandemic? When Falwell, Jr. quotes Trump’s “hoax” rhetoric as the reason to re-open Liberty University, and when Governors won’t shut down their states, putting people at risk for infection, Trump is at fault. More people will get sick and some will die. He is responsible for this. Regardless of the fact that Trump is not and never will be viewed as legitimate, he occupies the White House. That position carries with it the obligation to behave responsibly–not to politicize a pandemic or make up predictions without any basis in fact. That behavior of Trump is not just immoral, it should be criminal. It’s not terribly different from the Communist Chinese government lying to try to make themselves look good.

You still haven’t cited me any facts I’ve gotten wrong. I wouldn’t bother responding to you any more except to point out that just like the Dear Leader of which you are a Disciple, you can’t respond with logic, reason or facts to criticism—just personal attacks. I am to be dismissed because I won’t praise Trumpy Bear. That is exactly one of the tactics used by Trump News Network, a/k/a Fox News.

                1. “You can’t respond with logic, reason or facts to criticism—just personal attacks.”

“Disciple; Trump Disciple; What qualifies you; You don’t get to set the rules about judging Donald J. Trump; You even have your own statute to worship; You can cuddle Trumpy Bear tonight under your American flag blanket while you tun in to Pastor Hannity’s sermon; it must be OK to abuse, assault, and even try to kill Asian Americans; us white Americans; these facts…cause you to doubt your faith, the faithful must never forget that Dear Leader said; etc…”

lol, yeah, I’m the one firing off personal attacks like bullets. SURE.

              2. “Speaking of his restriction on travel from China, Trump said, “I had Biden calling me xenophobic. … . He called me a racist, because of the fact that he felt it was a racist thing to stop people from China coming in.”

Biden has not directly said that the restrictions were xenophobic. Around the time the Trump administration announced the travel restriction, Biden said that Trump had a “record of hysteria, xenophobia, and fear-mongering.” Biden used the phrase “xenophobic” in reply to a Trump tweet about limiting entry to travelers from China and in which he described the coronavirus as the “Chinese virus.” Biden did not spell out which part of Trump’s tweet was xenophobic.

Trump’s statement contains an element of truth but ignores critical facts that would give a different impression. We rate it Mostly False.”

Here’s your boy (mix them up anyway you want):

“The coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We have it totally under control. I’m not concerned at all. It’s one person coming in from China. We pretty much shut it down. It will all work out well. We’re in great shape. Doesn’t spread widely at all in the United States because of the early actions that myself and my administration took. There’s a chance it won’t spread. It’s something that we have tremendous control over.

Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear. Just stay calm. It will go away. The Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. This is their new hoax.

Whatever happens, we’re totally prepared. Totally ready. We’re rated number one for being prepared. We are so prepared like we never have been prepared. Taking early intense action, we have seen dramatically fewer cases of the virus in the United States. We’re very much ahead of everything.

This is a flu. I didn’t know people died from the flu. Here, we’re talking about a much smaller range. It is very mild. Some people will have this at a very light level. Some of them go to work.

The mortality rate is much, much better. In my opinion it’s way, way down. I think it’s substantially below 1 percent. A fraction of 1 percent. I think the numbers are going to get progressively better as we go along. This is just my hunch.

We have very little problem in this country. We only have five people. We only have 11 cases. Out of billions of people, 15 people. They’re getting better, and soon they’re all going to be better, hopefully. We’re going very substantially down, not up.

The United States, because of what I did and what the administration did with China, we have 32 deaths at this point. To this point, and because we have had a very strong border policy, we have had 40 deaths. As of this moment, we have 50 deaths. I have a feeling that a lot of the numbers that are being said in some areas are just bigger than they’re going to be.

Frankly, the testing has been going very smooth. The tests are all perfect. Anybody that wants a test can get a test. The tests are beautiful. We have a tremendous testing setup.

I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators. We are very close to a vaccine. A matter of months. You take a solid flu vaccine, you don’t think that could have an impact? Hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine. Based on very strong evidence..

I would love to have the country opened up and just raring to go by Easter. No way I’m going to cancel the convention. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!

We’re the ones that gave the great response. I’d rate it a 10. We’ve done a fantastic job. I think they should be appreciative. Gallup just gave us the highest rating. The highest on record.

I like this stuff. I really get it. Maybe I have a natural ability. We think it’s going to have a very good ending. We’re going to win faster than people think. I hope.

This blindsided the world! Who could have ever predicted a thing like this? This was something that nobody has ever thought could happen to this country.

I’ve always known this is a real, this is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic. I always treated the Chinese Virus very seriously.

If you’re talking about the virus, no, that’s not under control for anyplace in the world. I was talking about what we’re doing is under control, but I’m not talking about the virus. I didn’t say Easter. It was just an aspiration. I am giving consideration to a QUARANTINE.

So you’re talking about 2.2 million deaths. If we could hold that down…between 100,000 and 200,000, and we all together have done a very good job. START MAKING VENTILATORS, NOW!!!!!! FORD, GET GOING ON VENTILATORS, FAST!!!!!! Invoke “P”. I want our life back again.

It was nobody’s fault. No, just things that happened. I don’t take responsibility at all.”

                1. bythebook, I can sit here and bash Trump all day too. Point out someone in government I CAN’T bash.

Some of your quotes stand alone, and I agree were simply stupid things to say. If you want to maintain all of them were stupid things to say, you won’t get an argument from me.

But Trumptalk almost always needs to be taken in context, such as the the Easter and ventilators statements. Whenever Trump prefaces something with, “I believe,” “I hope,” “I could be wrong, but…” he’s patently trying to put his own positive spin on something. We could probably argue about whether that’s appropriate or not, but trying to pin it down as an alleged statement of fact or a policy directive set in stone is just dishonest.

As for the tests, Dr. Fauci’s addressed that in an interview with Hugh Hewitt, and I was satisfied with what he said. I honestly don’t know much about the Federal government’s role in things. I’ve been reading about the constitutional convention lately, and I get the impression that the Framers wanted as much of the real power as practical as close to the state governments as possible. The Federal government has clumsy hands. I think some of what’s been going on lately highlights the problems inherent with a Big government.

But all three of you keep avoiding the topic.

I’ve only asked (four times now – once in another thread) for Seth to connect the dots to Trump using the phrase “Chinese Virus,” and the violence against Chinese people in China and other countries.

                  And I’m still waiting.

            2. “What qualifies you, a Trump Disciple, to set rules for deciding what is rational and irrational commentary on Donald John Trump, much less come up with a standard that someone must meet by coming up with “positive things” about this person or be ruled irrational?”

What qualifies me? Actually, you did. Several times across several posts.

          2. Neither Natacha, nor Gainesville (under all the sock-puppets he uses), nor Shill have a delineated social ideology and only Shill has any real policy prescriptions (which consist of a restatement of the sort of op-ed tropes which were common 40 years ago). Gainesville says very little that isn’t misleading or self-aggrandizing and Natacha has a canned set of phrases running on continuous loop. Just out of puerile curiosity, I’d be amused to discover the menu of clinical labels her handlers have slapped on her over the years. Correct-the-Record is not sending us their best.

      3. EM, you’re getting our attention for all the wrong reasons. And in the process you come across as just the type of yahoo Asians in this country might worry about.

        1. https://www.dictionary.com/e/slang/concern-troll/

“Concern trolling involves someone opposing an idea or viewpoint, yet acting like they’re an advocate for the cause. A concern troll offers undermining criticisms under the guise of concern. Their goal is to sabotage the cause being discussed, and to inspire doubt among group members. This occurs in groups rallied around a particular issue, especially in political parties, and the goal of concern trolling is to cause dissent within a community.”

  8. Professor Turley, here is another story of incredible courage.

A madman tried to kidnap young children at a gas station, after they disembarked from a bus. They were waiting for their Uber. The man grabbed the kids and started punching and shoving bystanders who tried to help. The mother and her 3 kids fled to the store, where he ran after them. It boiled down to two women fighting him as he punched them repeatedly. Then, a high school wrestler saw what was going on across the street at another gas station. He rushed over there in his truck and ran inside the store. He pinned him in short order, while the 2 women stood ready to engage again. One of them picked up a Wet Floor sign and whacked the perp a couple of times in the head when he struggled.

God bless the everyday heroes who jump in and do something. Those two women tried their best, but it looked like the man was going to overpower them, and succeed in dragging the children away. If that teen hadn’t gotten involved, the worst might have happened. The trio, and the mother, showed every instinct in its most positive light. The mama bears and protective male fighting the threat. Heroes, all of them.

  9. Oh my God, he stabbed children?! Despicable! Throw the book at him and then beat him with it.

Zack Owen and Bernie Ramirez are heroes. I hope the family recovers and the kids will be OK. Cannot imagine the trauma to all of them.

The virus might have originated in China, but likely spread to other countries within days. You can’t look at someone and tell if they are non symptomatic carriers.

Ethnicity is not a risk factor. Not in today’s global travel world. Rather, the risk are all those obviously sick people walking around. Go to a grocery store, and chances are you will observe at least one person coughing by the time you leave. The last time I was at Trader Joe’s, a woman open-mouthed a wet, hacking, cough, obviously ill. She was standing between the produce section and the deli meat and cheese section. Everyone sucked back, horrified, and left that part of the store. But the damage was done. As we now know, SARS-CoV-2 remains aerosolized for hours.

Are grocery stores going to wait until they have to close, because their workers are sick and the rest won’t show up to their high risk jobs, before they start thinking, gee, maybe we should do delivery and curbside pickup only, and not let the public inside our stores anymore? If they close to the public, and only do delivery and curbside pickup, they could become relatively safe places for people to work. There are a lot of people who have lost their businesses already, and lost their jobs. Some of them might like a job where they are in a truck, all by themselves, all day, just dropping off food at people’s door, with no-contact deliveries. It would make the grocery stores money, keep their employees safe, and stop making grocery stores a common source of contagion. Wouldn’t that be nice.

    1. FishWings:

This has been explained, repeatedly. I know you have seen this. Common names of viruses typically cite the origin – location or vector. Communist China once again abused human rights. It arrested its own doctors for “disturbing the social order” when they tried to warn the world about this epidemic poised to go pandemic. We might have been able to slam a lid on it if we had known in time. We could have shut down travel for a few weeks, and it could have been extinguished. Now, there is a real possibility that this could become seasonal.

If I ever go silent on the blog, it could be because I have caught it. As an asthmatic, I probably would not survive. And a big reason for that is that Communist China arrested its own people who could have saved people like me. Millions could die, because people in China do not have the right of free speech, or really any individual rights at all. This isn’t the fault of the Chinese people, but rather their government does hold some culpability in its spread.

Communist China is frantically trying to shift blame and focus away from their own actions. Why would you help them? If they are called to the carpet, perhaps their people will win more rights? The entire push that “Wuhan virus” is racist is an effort to make people forget the Chinese government’s actions allowed this to go global, ruin global economies, impoverish people around the world, cause lung damage, and kill so many people who would otherwise be fine, walking around, and living their lives. Stop assisting a despotic government.

No, it most emphatically is not racist to have a common name indicate origin, whether plant, animal, or place. That is how it is described.

All of this nonsense that all of a sudden, the naming convention is racist is a PR stunt by Communist China to try to shirk responsibility.

      1. “This has been explained, repeatedly.” -Karen S.

Something heard from people who are desperate to make their point.

Karen will beat this drum forever; she’s blind to the reality of the situation.

        1. And “Anonymous” will refuse to address the facts.

Either partisan, or carrying the water for a Communist dictatorship that abused its own people in order to hide the spread of a pandemic.

          1. Karen, it’s a fact that the name of the virus is coronavirus 2.

GTF out of here with the right wing political correctness.

                1. bythebook – no, you used a made up common name. It’s not “coronavirus 2.” The virus is SARS-CoV-2 that causes the disease Covid-19.

If you think that Paul is a simpleton for using a common name referencing the Communist party’s involvement, then what does that make you for misnaming it, thinking you were using the accepted taxonomy?

Actually, no. SARS-CoV-2 has also not been accepted by the Chinese Communist Party. They object to its relationship to SARS, another disease that came out of China. But it is a coronavirus-caused Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. So Communist China can pound sand.

Maybe if enough people, besides Seth and Bythebook, object to Communist China’s treatment of its own people, that helped lead to a global pandemic and so many people dead, then Chinese people might get a few rights. Wouldn’t that be nice.

                  1. I can’t help a little Schadenfreude. Bythebook said “Karen, it’s a fact that the name of the virus is coronavirus 2.

GTF out of here with the right wing political correctness.”

I’m sorry. I’m still rolling on the floor laughing that Bythebook explained to poor little old me the scientific “facts”, and then used the wrong name for SARS-CoV-2.

Does he think there are only two coronaviruses? More than two variants affect cattle, alone.

Tell me more “facts”, bythebook! I await with baited breath your wisdom from on high.

                    1. Karen, I’m glad I was able to amuse your simple mind by simply using the common but clear name based on the type of virus and used by everyone in the world but Trump cultists and off beat right wingers. 1. bythebook:

No, “coronavirus 2” is not the name of the virus or the disease, as named by the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses. So, you just used a made up common name, as well.

The name of the virus is SARS-CoV-2. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2. There are a great many coronaviruses that affect humans and animals. But there have been two linked with severe acute respiratory syndrome, or a form of acute pneumonia. The disease is Covid-19. That stands for COronaVIrus Disease 2019.

I recall back in December, reading articles about a rash of pneumonias in China. Epidemiologists were talking about the Chinese pneumonias. The Wuhan virus. And various other references as we first started getting the data that Communist China so desperately tried to hide, at the expense of the lives of their brave doctors who defied them, and then died in prison. How well do you think Communist China took care of the medical needs of their sick whistleblowers?

Claiming the Wuhan Virus common name is racist is just Communist propaganda to try to make people forget that they really did muzzle their own doctors and arrest them.

          2. “Either partisan, or carrying the water for a Communist dictatorship that abused its own people in order to hide the spread of a pandemic.” Said by Karen, reaching a faulty conclusion — again.

Neither, but you’ve given yourself away with your childish accusations.

Get over it and move on.

        1. bythebook:

Actually, no. As has been explained to you repeatedly, the virus is SARS-CoV-2. The disease it causes is Covid-19. That’s according to the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses.

But, you go ahead and tell us like it is. It is fascinating watching someone be so passionately wrong.

Of course, if you want to make up a common name, it’s a free country. You have the right to do so. But it’s not the scientific name that you think it is. It’s just another name to add to Wuhan virus, China virus, Cluster of China pneumonias, or Communist Chinese Party virus.

      2. Karen: Trumpy Bear tried to re-name this virus to STIGMATIZE Chinese, mostly because they wouldn’t knuckle under to his tariffs and give him a trade war victory to brag about. You are regurgitating slop served to you by Trump News Network, a/k/a Fox. Anyone who doesn’t give in to Trump gets called names, which is a longer list than the one you provided. The WHO named it COVID-19. Trump is not King of the World, and hasn’t the right to re-name a pandemic for political reasons.

        1. “Karen: Trumpy Bear tried to re-name this virus to STIGMATIZE Chinese, mostly because they wouldn’t knuckle under to his tariffs and give him a trade war victory to brag about.” Based on what? Do you think your ravings count as a source? Do you think constantly shrieking hysterically about Fox makes you a source? Bythebook thinks its called “coronavirus 2.” And he’s allowed to call it that, if he likes. It used to be referred to as “that cluster of pneumonias in China.” It wasn’t the WHO who named it. It was the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. China objects to the ICTV’s designation of the virus that causes Covid-19 as SARS-CoV-2, as well. But China doesn’t have the power to control what we say here in the US. Well, it does influence social media. Facebook, Twitter, and the rest of Silicon Valley seems eager to please China and censor speech it disagrees with.

Anyone has the right to call the pandemic anything he wants. That’s called Free Speech. Read the Constitution. You are filled with hate. It’s disturbing.

          1. Trump’s Fireside Chat with the nation (all texts are his quotes on the virus):

Yeah, I know. No context so Trumpsters, arrange these sentences anyway you want and get it in the most most favorable order to your Dear Leader.

            It will read the same.

        1. Bythebook – Learn. It was China who lied about the facts that the pandemic was about and globe trotting for 2 months. We didn’t shut the door on it when we isolated those positive passengers of the Diamond Princess. It was already getting comfy for a couple of months.

Not take it seriously? Have you read the account of the early positive patients sent to a military quarantine? Separated from his wife? Not allowed to go home even when his symptoms subsided because he still tested positive?

It would have been really helpful to know when the pandemic actually started to spread, so that we could have taken decisive action at the beginning. We’d have had a chance to stop it. We thought we had patient zero, but we didn’t. Global scientists used to believe the virus was only contained in heavy droplets. Now we know it survives aerosolized for hours, and for days on hard surfaces.

I’ve already listed what my complaints are with the government handling of the crisis. If you cannot admit that there were positive actions taken, then you’re just a partisan hack unwilling to deal with facts and reality. Exploiting a global pandemic for political purposes. I find that to be quite poor judgement.

    2. “One has to wonder, where he would get the idea the it is a “Chinese Virus”?”

      1) At one point did the perpetrator call it a Chinese Virus?

      2) You’ll have to point out someone who DOESN’T know where the virus came from. It’s not a huge leap of imagination to presume the kid has been watching the news, and just a short hop from there is the assumption that he might actually know what people from China look like.

  10. Therefore my comment on Pelosi was correct. And her hate crimes against our Constitutional Republic also qualify as Acts of Terrorism. Good call Squeeks! That one not only has power she has to much power for one who has violated her oath of office so many times.

  11. I am not sure if hating the Chinese constitutes a “hate crime”. I am not happy with the ChiComs right now, however they are responsible for what is happening. Anyone who follows China knows not to believe them.

    1. Paul, given your fealty to Trump, I don’t think you’re qualified to pass judgement on who to believe about anything.

While the Chinese did not purposefully spread the corona virus, they misrepresented the threat and their response and that makes them partly responsible for it’s spread. Trump is partly responsible for exactly the same reasons.

      1. Why is Trump responsible for “exactly the same reasons?”

Did he arrest doctors who tried to warn the world about a rapidly spreading epidemic that would shortly become pandemic? Why, no. He has urged calm. When Communist China’s actions came out, it became clear that we were not able to stop its spread to the US. The positive passengers from the Diamond Princess were sent to a military facility for quarantine. Husbands and wives were separated if one was positive, and the other not. There is a blog written by one of the patients, were you can read all about his experiences. They tried to slam a lid on it. What we did not know right away was that China arrested its whistleblower doctors for “disturbing the social order.”

That’s the thing about Socialism, and its end goal, Communism. It is impossible to coexist with strong individual rights. That’s why Communist China was able to arrest its own heroic doctors.

If you can’t name some things that you approve of in Trump’s Covid-19 response (or indeed any of his actions), then you are partisan. If you can’t name some things that you disagree with, then you are partisan. The man is neither the devil nor Jesus Christ.

Here are my problems with our own government’s response:
        1. The CDC has been given a virtual slush fund. It wasted a lot of money on nonsense such as getting monkeys drunk and giving cocaine too quail. Rather than being the infallible government entity that has been prepared for decades for the inevitable pandemic, it dropped the ball. The CDC test could run 12 samples a day. Not only that, but the field test it scaled up and sent out had a bunch of inconclusive results. They must have done quite poor QC testing to send out a product like that, with so many lives hanging in the balance. Then they could not figure out how to get a high throughput, rapid turnaround field test sent out to get rid of the mountainous backlog. Trump threw it open to private industry, and in short order we had accurate field tests, that could run tens of thousands of samples, and give a result back in 45 minutes. This debacle illustrates why government is not always better, and why we should not nationalize the industry or keep testing done by government. My friend had Covid-19. It took weeks to get his test back, because it was sent to the CDC. By the time he got his results back, he was improving. No. Trump did not tell the CDC to turn down the WHO test. (https://khn.org/news/biden-falsely-blames-trump-administration-for-rejecting-who-coronavirus-test-kits-that-were-never-offered/)

        2. I disagree with Trump’s over eagerness to open up restrictions and get people back to work early. We are still processing testing backlogs. We don’t have the beds or ventilators to help peak projections. Remember all the flack political activists and politicians gave Trump for saying that he hoped proposed mediations made it through approval? (I mean, don’t we all hope that a medicine works and gets approved?) The FDA approved Chloroquine And Hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19 treatment. (https://www.forbes.com/sites/rachelsandler/2020/03/30/fda-approves-anti-malarial-drugs-chloroquine-and-hydroxychloroquine-for-emergency-coronavirus-treatment/#7cbea1565e5d) Not only do the drugs need to be proven to work, but we need to manufacture enough of it to treat millions of people. And then, over time, we need to see what happens. As an asthmatic, I hope to God the drugs work. The data out of NYC is not good. According to Cuomo, 80% of people who go onto ventilators don’t come off. They die. I would never, ever approve of more people going to work until and unless there are more drive through testing sites, where you can be prescribed, and handed, medication that would knock this out. Then, fine, go back to work. Otherwise, I choose life.

        1. Karen, maybe you’ve been in a coma, but Trump has been soft selling the threat and dithering on a strong federal response for at least 2 months and up to and including yesterday when he was still pumps unlikely predictions.

If you have been in a coma, someone else has been posting in your name.

          1. Bythebook:

It’s really too bad that you didn’t take my advice and read about what happened to the positive patients from the Diamond Princess. I don’t think they felt like they were soft pedaled.

Recall when Trump imposed travel restrictions and was called racist? So funny. Oh, or you could conveniently ignore how the medical community has said for months that most seasonal coronaviruses fade out by summer, and then claim that when Trump says he has been told it might fade away in the warmer months, he’s foolish.

I have no problem with him telling people not to panic. I do take issue with his over eagerness to get people back to work, and have explained why I think it is a mistake. But you’re too partisan to have any reasonable discussion or acknowledge any positive moves. It’s all trench warfare and ignore the facts.

Now, tell me again, all about how the “scientific name ” of SARS-CoV-2 is actually “coronavirus 2”.

        2. Both you and Natacha have taken H.L. Mencken (“I write in order to attain that feeling of tension relieved and function achieved which a cow enjoys on giving milk.”) too much to heart. You differ from her in not writing things vicious, mendacious, or delusional.

    2. I agree with you that official statements from China, North Korea, Iraq, Russia, and more than a few other places have little credibility. How much credibility do you think America is to be believed these days? There are the statements that carry no weight (those made by anyone but Trump because he’ll override them in a minute) or those made by Trump on which he’s either wishy-washy and may change his mind if criticized by talk radio or Fox, or when he’s outright lying which is more often the case.

      1. enigma – you make a good point. However, my state updates the stats as it gets them on their site. I have no control over my state’s or any other database.

        1. Your President makes daily statements, a mixture of the truth, lies, and wishful thinking. He contradicts his own doctors and scientists. Many states are doing a good job about presenting factal information as quickly as possible. The US Government, not so much.

          1. the case counts are all understated because testing sucks everywhere outside of the richest countries in asia oh and also germany. obviously testing sucks here too. it’s simplistic to blame that on trump, as if he is running the health care industry single handedly.

the case counts are also understated because of asymptomatic carriers — so they are all low

the difference is, you can be sure the PRC has under reported them as a matter of policy!

            1. I agree with you that counts from many other countries are unreliable, I can imagine the US undercounting deaths as well. They already did in Puerto Rico after the hurricanes. Most figures are accumulated at the state lever. Especially those Governors who let Trump convince them not to shut down their states including my governor Ron DeSantis in Florida and that fool in Mississippi. Do you think for a minute they wouldn’t decrease the numbers if it meant they would look better? At this point it’s in for a penny, in for a pound.

              https://medium.com/@williamspivey/the-worst-state-to-live-in-during-covid-19-d732212206ad

            2. Mr Kurtz – I think nailing people into their homes/apartments can definitely be classed as under-counting.

  12. Former Attorney General Eric Holder stated that only whites would be charged with hate crimes. So unless AG Barr has changed DOJ policy, this guy’s charges will be limited to assault, attempted murder, etc., but he is off the hook for a hate crimes enhancement.

    1. I wouldn’t doubt that approximated current policy on his watch, but I seriously doubt he ever said that in blunt terms. (It sounds like something Spike Lee would say).

    1. Not really the issue we’ve been discussing here antonio regarding the insistence on Trump lovers here parroting his stupid “China Virus” line.

      1. Interestingly enough, out of the 12 times that phrase as been used in this thread, only three of those uses were by “Trump lovers,” and of those three uses, two of them were quoting the NeverTrumpers. The remaining nine uses were by NeverTrumpers.

  13. What a laughable case! As the Democrats are always preaching, you have to have “power” to be racist. As an Hispanic, Gomez has no power, and is therefore incapable of committing a hate crime.

    Squeeky Fromm
    Girl Reporter

    1. THe word preaching is another good score for the Squeek. It was V I Lenin who taught Mussolini when that one was head of the Italian Socialist Party (prior to his forming the Fascist Party). Mussolini asked how do I teach or explain something llke dialectics or socialist economics when I don’t understand it? Lenin replied. You never teach it you just preach it. That’s the source of why the left never provides any facts or sources. They literally don’t known or understand that of which they speak. The excuse doesn’t extend to Comrades Pelosi, Schumer, Ocasio, Biden and Sanders. But does apply to former candidates Motor Mouth and Poke and Haunt Us.

    2. Squeeky,
I’d be curious as to what media Mr. Gomez pays attention to and where he got his ideas? I’ll slide past your comment that a Hispanic has no power the logical extension of which is that nobody not white has power. I personally don’t see that something being labeled a hate crime has ever deterred anyone. It’s more like a badge of honor in some circles and more likely to get a Presidential Pardon.

      1. Enigma – no media that I have read or heard has stated that Chinese people are diseased, should be harmed, or that they are the only carriers.

In fact, everyone is talking about how it has spread globally. The little old white lady hacking wet coughs in Trader Joes probably had it.

Why are you not blaming the homicidal maniac who stabbed little kids for his own actions? If an environmental terrorist blew up a rancher’s house, with him and his family still inside, would you say that this is the fault of those who claim that people should give up red meat? Or would you blame the domestic terrorist?

The Left does use convoluted logic. The Qur’an and hadith explicitly states to kill Jews. But the Left does not blame all Muslims, or even the Qur’an itself, when a Muslim terrorist kills Jews in the name of his faith. I mean, his book and his Prophet told him to do it. They say, blame the terrorist. And don’t blame innocent Muslims who have the moral intelligence to simply ignore savage passages in their holy book. Nor should they.

But with their propensity to bleat out what they’re told without thought, so many have jumped on the bandwagon of blaming Trump, or blaming a naming convention, because a few people have done terrible things to Chinese people around the world. No mainstream media source that I have ever read has blamed any Chinese person outside of their government for Covid-19. No one has encouraged violence against ethnically Chinese people. In fact, everywhere, those doctors who defied their government, spoke out, and many died are being hailed as brave heroes. And yet, in pretzel logic, people are claiming that it’s the fault of naming the virus after its origin as has been done for many years is suddenly racist.

Do you not understand that you are justifying the actions of criminals?

Logic must be applied equally. If so, then it’s the fault of environmentalists every time a terrorist hurts people in the name of the environment. Like the Unabomber. It’s the fault of vegans whenever ranches or poultry farm workers are attacked or robbed. It’s Greta Thurnburg’s fault if anyone decides not to have children or commits a violent act because of Anthropogenic Climate Change. It’s the fault of movie makers whenever anyone engages in a life of crime glorified in their films. It’s the fault of those who want to help black people succeed if any black person is racist against other races. It’s the fault of every Muslim on Earth if a Muslim terrorist hurts anyone.

Do you not see the flaw in this logic?

        1. Karen needs to get out and clear her head. She’s all over the place.

Doesn’t she have a horse she can ride?

        2. Karen does in fact fault “leftists” for all societies ills but here pretends the most powerful man in the world, who’s every thought he purposefully broadcasts to all, including idiots, is faultless because one of those idiots acts on one of them.

Those promoting this Trumpster blame shifting political correctness all own a piece of this, including her.

          1. Karen does in fact fault “leftists” for all societies ills

What’s interesting about your complaint is that we’ve all yet to discover a sh!t sandwich you won’t eat, bar when you complain the moderator is being unsporting bringing up a subject that’s embarrassing to troll farm denizens such as yourself. Quit reflexively (1) making the case for social ills or (2) pretending people who point them out are the real problem, and will stop comprehensively holding you at fault. You cannot manage it, of course.

          2. By thebook – I take issue with Leftist philosophies and policies that cause harm, and I explain why.

Increasing the threshold of felony theft in CA to $950, to the point that people steal with impunity and the cops don’t bother arresting them is an example. So is emptying prisons during this outbreak.

I have absolutely criticized Republican shortfalls when appropriate, and explained why. But since you are too partisan to reason, you won’t understand. You’ll just keep on insulting and think you’re witty.

            1. Forget all this nonsense about what the virus is called. Depression is at hand. Social unrest begins.

As we work our way through the mess, understand who has really lead us to this mess, where hugely paid executives now run to Washington for massive bailouts, peanuts are offered to peasants, and everyone important escapes responsibility:

              a) When Deng Xiaopoing opened the PRC for business, western big business executives LEAPED at the chance to get non-unionized, slave labor level wages, and no environmental regs for offshored production to be located THERE not HERE;

              b) for decades western big business executives bought off both the Republican AND Democrat parties to keep this system afloat, as they offshored more and more American industry so they could continue to reap windfall profits

              c) for decades western big business executives– and their financial backers– socialized their risks and losses (think 2008) while they more and more internalized and hogged their fat profits.

              d) mass migration from third world was supported and encouraged in both its legal and illegal forms by the very same big business executives, their financial backers; at the expense of native born American workers; and they concealed it with a lot of nonsense about aggrieved natives being “racists” etc. to suppress dissent

              e) there was a small workers rebellion on the left with bernie and on the right with Trump

              f) a virus emerged, hit PRC hard, the CCP has scrambled to lie about it, contain it, and now blame Trump for it

              g) the CCP and the international financial interests are both attacking Trump, to demonize him as a convenient adversay, but on the money powers side, to squeeze him to support more big bailouts because a DEPRESSION has arrived

we American WORKERS must be UNITED across party lines to march together out of the mess that is now emerging. And that mess is not just pandemic it is now DEPRESSION

whatever the Federal Reserve wizards and other financial spooks dream up we should be demanding DEBT REDUCTION most of all

and secondly that the irresponsible exeuctives whether incompetent for profit hospital execs, greedy international bankers, useless political correctness commissars, whomever has been on easy street, while we labor and suffer under low wage growth but high interest on debt, we must demand that they be held responsible

Demonizing one man, Trump, is almost certainly a plan that some sneaky rich bastids have dreamed up to circumvent the last point

Only the NATION as a whole is strong enough to stand up to the interests of international financial skulduggery.

NATIONALISM versus GLOBALISM is the new dichotomy. everything else is passe.

creative ideas like UBI need a look– but so does this– debt jubilee:

              https://www.marketplace.org/2020/04/02/covid-19-debt-jubilee-forgiveness-easing/

any of you who may mistake me, first study michael hudson., he is a fine economist, and one whose policies could only strengthen America as a whole.

              please take a look!

finally, there is a danger that the warmongers will seek a way out of this through finding a war with china. the CCP would love that and so would some of the “usual suspects” here too. That is NOT the solution. remember they have nukes and what’s worse than a pandemic would be getting nuked!

      2. hate crime enhancements are the subject, here; they are usually tack-ons of additional time, like “aggravating factors”… sometimes they form a separate substantive crime. Penal codes do not punish ONLY bad thoughts– they do not punish purely mens rea, but, there is always some actus reus, some thing that was done, not just bad thoughts or words.

I am against hate crime enhancements and separate bias crimes. I fear they go too far towards punishing bad ideas instead of bad acts. i am all for punishment of crime however. let the evil criminal who committed aggravated battery, pull a long sentence for aggravated battery & attempted murder. there is no need to tack additional feel-good labels on to the conviction. he will be up the river for at least 20 years without adding bells and whistles to it.

can we say that any crimes of battery and attempted murder are not-hateful? are attempted murders committed dispassionately, more acceptable? so i have a problem with the concept of the “hate crime” in its essence. the core crime can and should be punished so that is enough

I also have a problem with various other sorts of criminal enhancements. there are problems with “firearm related enhancements” under a certain federal statute which has had a lot of attention the past few yearw. there are also problems with excessive sentencing of people with a certain amount of cocaine who are presumed, without evidence, to be drug dealers. in some cases, a bare handful of extra doses will fetch someone many additional years in prison.

        1. “I am against hate crime enhancements and separate bias crimes. I fear they go too far towards punishing bad ideas instead of bad acts. i am all for punishment of crime however. ”

          Yes.

        2. I’m not a big fan of hate-crime enhancements. It allows people to pretend they’re working to solve a problem they aren’t. I don’t need prosecutors to seek extra justice, just regular justice would be fine.

                  1. ha! they would have no part of it. but it needs to be discussed. like UBI it is a creative and timely discussion

hang about 10 top international finance capos and trust me the next 10 bigwigs could figure it out really fast!

          1. Enigma – I completely agree with your statement. All crimes are hate crimes. I think that domestic terrorist charges would cover some crimes that currently have hate crime enhancements.

        3. Mr. K, what’s a “love crime?”

You do know this is a ridiculous, ludicrous sop to, how shall I say, “minorities;” a melodramatic display of fealty which would be immutably inconceivable outside of communism, right?

          1. George I said:

“I am against hate crime enhancements and separate bias crimes. I fear they go too far towards punishing bad ideas instead of bad acts. i am all for punishment of crime however.”

how is that a sop to minorities or to communists? I’m against hate crime enhancements.

Some minorities like Enigma can see that they are indeed a sop. He just said so above. Did you read that or just skip it? Don’t worry too much about native born black folks. Most of them are law abiding and their interests are pretty closely aligned with native born white Americans too in spite of all the anti-white rhetoric the media and universities spin. Don’t over-react!

As for communists they are extinct outside of American and European universities.

The communists in china are corrupt gang animated more by nationalism than by marxism. They could care less whether we have hate crime enhancements or not.

Seth was right about one thing that he said in spite of all his trolling. The “Culture Wars” aspect of all this is a distraction. And yet Seth is busy trolling above, out of bad habits! Seth is not the enemy. Seth is just another guy.

Who’s the enemy? Well, not anybody typing away here. These enemies wear tailored suits. Really nice ones we can’t afford. The C suite guys. The university Presidents, the big names. The top. Not just the 1% man but the 1% of the 1%. And their hirelings, apologists, and agents of distraction in media and academe. And their steppinfetchits in Congress, and their army of eager helpers in the “Deep State” who have tried to hamstring Trump who shows dangerous nationalist instincts.

The same Deep state flunkies who, nobody noticed, a day or two ago leaked a secret report from CIA etc that “Chinese have been downplaying their COVID-19 casualties.” DUH ! I said this all the past 2 months. This is what they get their billions to figure out? Pathetic! Now that their coup against Trump has failed, they’re going to start sucking up to him, hoping he pulls their chestnuts out of the fire.

Right now the big business and financial interests and their handmaidens at the Fed Reserve and their front men in Congress are all thinking up more ideas on how to fleece the taxpayers to take the brunt of this mess. Right now we need to focus on what Steve Bannon called “economic nationalism” and it is something that we can come together on across party lines.

I tell you George, quit worrying about communists. That is old hat. The communists in American universities are irrelevant now. The commies in China are commies in name only. Rather they are a corrupt mafia running a nation of slave laborers for sale to foreign bidders. No. They are part of international finance as much as anybody. Focus on American enemies now. The people in the Democrat and Republican parties who are thinking about how to bail out international finance are the bandits we need to worry about. We peasants and workers need to be thinking about how to get out of the DEPRESSION at hand assuming we survive the pandemic.

            https://www.marketplace.org/2020/04/02/covid-19-debt-jubilee-forgiveness-easing/

PS did I mention? The billionaire Saudi camel riding “Princes” who tanked the global price of oil at just the wrong moment are as much “enemies” as any bunch of foreigners anywhere. Gee, I remember when candidate Trump was complaining about them, whatever happened to that? Did their buddy Jared talk Trump out of it? Fire that Saudi boot-licker Jared now, Trump! America first!
