CNN Analyst and Yale Lecturer Asha Rangappa Under Fire For Doxxing A Journalism Intern

200px-yale_university_shield_1svgRecently, we discussed a bizarre attack by CNN Legal Analyst and Yale lecturer Asha Rangappa on former Ambassador Nikki Haley for using her middle name.  Rangappa declared that the use of “Nikki” rather than her real first name was proof that America is racist and Haley was yielding to it.  Nikki however is Haley’s legal middle name and the Hill’s Saagar Enjeti noted it is “a Punjabi name.” Moreover, Rangappa also uses her middle name as have leaders from Mitch Romney to Boris Johnson. Now Rangappa is under fire for doxxing a young intern who wrote Yale about the incident. Twitter took down Rangappa’s tweet and the CNN Analyst then suggested that the doxxing incident was fun.To recap the controversy, Nikki Haley gave a speech at the RNC and lashed out that it is

“now fashionable to say that America is racist. That is a lie. America is not a racist country. This is personal for me. I am the proud daughter of Indian immigrants. They came to America and settled in a small Southern town. My father wore a turban. My mother wore a sari. I was a Brown girl in a Black and White world. We faced discrimination and hardship. But my parents never gave in to grievance and hate. My mom built a successful business. My dad taught 30 years at a historically black college. And the people of South Carolina chose me as their first minority and first female governor. America is a story that’s a work in progress. Now is the time to build on that progress, and make America even freer, fairer, and better for everyone.”

That speech led to an immediate personal attack from Rangappa that Haley bowed to racism by dropping her real name: “Right. Is that why you went from going by Nimrata to ‘Nikki’?” Rangappa asked.

In addition, South Asians for Biden attacked Haley and  tweeted, “If America isn’t racist, why did Nimarata Haley feel compelled to change her name to ‘Nikki’? Maybe just the Republican Party is?” The group added “#PhonyNikki.” (The tweet was later withdrawn with an apology over its “tone”).

A young intern Washington Free Beacon intern asked Yale for comment about the controversy since Rangappa is also director of admissions in theJackson Institute.  She referred to an article in a conservative publication detailing how Rangappa also uses her middle name while labeling Haley as a type of racist shill.

That inquiry apparently set off Rangappa who tweeted a screenshot of the Yale comment that contained Alex Nester’s mobile phone number and email.  That might have been done innocently without realizing the inclusion of the information, but Rangappa eliminated any doubt by encouraging  her more than 600,000 followers  to “Feel free to respond to Alex.”  This was presented as a tit for tat because “@FreeBeacon has now contacted my employer.” Her followers did precisely as Rangappa suggested until Twitter took down Rangappa doxxing tweet.

Rather than apologize, Rangappa mocked the effort of Twitter to protect the intern and accused Nester of trying to “Karen me at my job,” a term viewed by many as a slur for a white woman. Rangappa declared “Getting a Twitter warning felt like the first time I got detention as a senior in high school!” and compared it to “going to Taco Bell with my best friend during study hall.”

We have previously discussed controversies surrounding Rangappa, who is a former associate dean of Yale Law School.  Much of this prior coverage concerns analysis that was criticized as deeply flawed and overtly biased (here and here and here). While Rangappa has claimed that her analysis has been misinterpreted, she has been quick to offer legal analysis to support narratives against the Administration or for its critics. For example, the former FBI employee was proven wrong in claiming that the memoranda removed by Comey were merely “personal recollections” after the FBI and other offices declared them not just FBI official material but potentially classified.

download-1The incident highlights the troubling double standard applied to such attacks using the race or ethnicity of another person.  After falsely and hypocritically attack Haley as a racist shill, Rangappa not only doxxed a young intern but used a racial term to attack the intern.   Notably, the Jackson Institute declares that it teaches students to “tackle challenges with wisdom, facts, insight, and courage.” Those appear purely aspirational concepts in this incident.

  1. For years I have been the victim of firstnameism. First the Army insisted on first name/middle initial. Then computers gave me only a single-letter field for middle name. Then the DMV initiated a new rule. Then the Federal Courts required me to file pleadings this way. I’ve been swimming upstream on this issue for decades. Frankly, I’m feeling oppressed and victimized. Maybe I’ll start a support group or a go-fund-me campaign — create a foundation with deceased honorary board members like J. Edgar Hoover, F. Scott Fitzgerald, W. Somerset Maugham, J. Sebastian Bach, J. Calvin Coolidge and celebrities: W. Bruce Willis, M. Neil Simon, W. Bradley Pitt, H. Warren Beatty, T. Garth Brooks, and T. Sean Connery.

  2. Rangappa isn’t much of an analyst if she didn’t trouble to Google Nikki Haley’s name. Even if it was a nickname, rather than her legal middle name, claiming the use is bowing to racism is absurd.

I have nicknames in Cherokee, Spanish, Farsi, and Portuguese. My friends and I call each other endearments or create nicknames. Kids usually shorten their names, whether those names are Western, or anywhere else. Michael – Mike. Rafael – Raffy. Alberto – Bertie. Stephen – Steve. Ronald – Ron. Jennifer – Jen. Maryam – Mary, or Marijoon. Sometimes people use nicknames simply because it is grating on the ears to hear their name constantly mispronounced.

A nickname is not an insult. I doubt Rangappa’s character for her to make such an Anti-American, bigoted statement. In any case, next time spend a couple of minutes and find out her full legal name before typing.

    1. I tried to send you an email, Karen re: your child’s schooling. If you didn’t get it, I will send again,

      Paul

  3. While Twitter responds to charges of doxing, sexist or gender-based based at the speed of light with suspensions and bans, entltled leftists such as Asha Rangappa are wrapped firmly on both wrists, but no worse for the same offenses. if Jack Dorsey wishes to dispel chages of favoritism toward the Asha Rengappas of Twitter some parity in punishment would be nice.

  4. I’d like to kindly suggest that you climb down off your high horse, and recognize that Turley is justifiably calling out the liberal press and their totally unorthodox treatment of normal people who dare to question them.

  5. In a nutshell, this is why your Party will lose in November, Isaac:

“The Left wants to abolish the Police….does the Black community? Watch and find out! ”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyTTxWtOBZM

The absolutely clueless Caucasian New Yorkers at the beginning remind me of you, Commit, BTB, Bugs, and Fishwings.

Whereas the black people in the video remind me of every black person I know and speak to about the subject.

    1. The “left” that exists in Rhode’s imagination may want to abolish the police, but the Democrats as represented by their leadership and party platform certainly do not.

“Reinvigorate community-oriented policing. Policing works best when officers are out of their cruisers and walking the streets, engaging with and getting to know members of their communities. But in order to do that, police departments need resources to hire a sufficient number of officers. Biden spearheaded the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program, which authorized funding both for the hiring of additional police officers and for training on how to undertake a community policing approach. However, the program has never been funded to fulfill the original vision for community policing. Biden will reinvigorate the COPS program with a $300 million investment. As a condition of the grant, hiring of police officers must mirror the racial diversity of the community they serve. Additionally, as president, Biden will establish a panel to scrutinize what equipment is used by law enforcement in our communities.”

    2. There is no evil “Left”, a wastebasket term used by Fox to describe people opposed to Trump. Biden is opposed to de-funding the police, and this is just one of numerous lies Trump and the Republicans regularly repeat. I’m wondering why Turley hasn’t addressed the disgusting narcissism fest held last night on the lawn of the people’s house. Few to no face masks. No social distancing. The arrogance and narcissism on full display. This is the house Lincoln, FDR and JFK lived in, and it was turned into a prop for the most incompetent person ever to occupy this building, someone whose negligence has caused the death of 181,000+ Americans, and who literally has no shame. Trump has no regard for the history, dignity and symbolism of the White House or the historically-important events that took place there. To him, it’s nothing more than a prop for his reality TV show. Yesterday, 1,200 Americans died from this out of control pandemic– about the same number who were on the lawn of the people’s house cheering someone who cheated to get the presidency, who has invited foreign countries to help him cheat again, who praises White Supremacists (doesn’t he know that they are anti-Semitic?), who cages small children, and who constantly lies. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe how repulsive and anti-American this is.

OMG, the lies: 1. there is no proven COVID anti-viral therapy. Remdesivir is used, but hasn’t been tested for COVID. If it proves to be effective, how can Trump take credit for that? There wouldn’t be such an urgent need for treatment but for his gross negligence in mishandling 2. The US has not done more tests than other countries, and the US is clearly not doing better than other countries at controlling the spread, something Trump constantly lies about. Testing in this country is nothing short of a disaster, and now, to try to create artificially low numbers that Trump can brag about, Trump and his Republican allies are slowing down testing, just in time for November. Tests are already down 30%. Trump bullied the CDC into changing recommended testing only for symptomatic persons, but 40% of COVID positive cases are asymptomatic, and they are spreading the disease. 3. Biden has never been in favor of third-trimester abortion. That is just a lie. Trump won’t answer as to how many fetuses of his have been aborted. When asked about this specifically in an interview back in the 90’s, he responded: “Nice question. Next question.” 4. Only 3 miles of new border wall have been built, not 300, AND Mexico didn’t pay for any of it. 5. The Veterans Choice Act was signed into law by Obama; 6. A woman is going to the moon? That’s news to NASA. 7. Lying about Joe Biden being a socialist, being controlled by socialists; lying about Biden being weak against violent protests– he has been very vocal in condemning violence, as has Kamala Harris; claiming Biden is the “destroyer of American greatness…destroyer of American jobs.” Huh? What American greatness? A pandemic out of control, unemployment at 10+%–what were the numbers when Biden was VP? Obama & Biden reversed the recession caused by Bush. Trump inherited a robust economy that he just built on, but then destroyed with his mishandling of the pandemic and his stupid tariffs, which are passed on to Americans in the form of higher costs for goods. Didn’t the Obama-Biden administration, with the expertise of public health officials, create a pandemic plan that Trump trashed? How about the endless lies about the pandemic, beginning with downplaying it, and to this day, not serving as a role model by wearing a mask?

How about law and order? What a joke. Let’s start with violations of the Hatch Act on full display last night. Then, there’s refusing to cooperate with subpoenas, refusing to produce tax and financial records to Mueller and various prosecutors and refusing to be deposed, and yet crowing that he was exonerated of charges that he prevented Mueller from fully investigating. Law and order only applies when phony draft-dodging macho man can threaten to crack skulls of peaceful protesters. Then, there’s the fear-mongering. Trump has morphed from trying to create fear of brown people from south of the border in 2016 into stoking fear that rioters are coming for the “suburban housewives” and are going to be put into public housing in their neighborhoods to destroy their home values, and it will all be Biden’s fault. Lies, of course. He doesn’t address the reasons for the unrest–no empathy for unarmed black men being murdered by the police. The anarchy and chaos which he is trying to leverage against Joe Biden is happening on his watch–due to his incompetence in addressing the racial injustice that is causing it. His response: crack skulls.

How about healthcare? He promised a better plan than Obamacare–where is it? He’s had 4 years to come up with something, but there’s nothing. Instead, his administration is in court trying to strike down Obamacare, which will throw millions off of health insurance–right in the midst of a pandemic. Nice going.

  6. You can call Ray you can call me Jay but can’t call me Johnson! What in the greater problems we currently have does it matter! Such a deflection and pure nonsense.

  7. So she works WHERE as a WHAT Professort a Yale? And CNN contributor This Is a total hypocrite. This tells you a lot about Yale, and the parents that send their kids there

  8. So Kellyanne Conway makes the following statement:
The more chaos and anarchy and vandalism and violence reigns, the better it is for the very clear choice on who’s best on public safety and law and order.

Joe Biden responds with classic projection:
“These guys are rooting for violence,” Biden said in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “That is what it is all about.”

You’d have to be a special kind of stupid to believe Conway, Trump and his administration are rooting for violence. Her point is clear; the violence and chaos that these Democrat-run cities and states have allowed to continue is representative of the Democratic party’s willful and insidious strategy to stoke fear and division. I guarantee you the law-abiding citizens across this country aren’t buying what the Democratic party is selling. If their strategy was working, Biden wouldn’t be saying a word. Rest assured, Democrats have internal polling the proves Conway’s point is accurate. This is damage control for a candidate and party that has been taking on water for months.

    1. You Trumpsters have perfected the art of projection, a Kellyanne specialty. When confronted with something that makes you look bad, pivot and project your bad faults onto your opponent. The violence and chaos are happening on Trump’s watch, and are due to his incompetent failure to address the racial injustice that is the cause. Trump has said literally nothing about the latest police shooting; no comforting words, no empathy. Instead, fake macho man talks cracking skulls. Was there anarchy, chaos or violence when Obama and Biden were in the White House? Where does Trump get off claiming Biden couldn’t handle this crisis. Biden and Harris understand that this country needs healing after what Trump has done, and they are the people to do it. Talk about stoking fear: Trump telling “suburban housewives” that rioters are coming for them, and that Biden will put low-income housing in their neighborhoods, all lies. Trump is no leader. He promotes distrust and division, and that is un-American.

I think most Americans were shocked by last night’s appalling display of malignant narcissism and mendacity and flaunting of the dignity and history of the White House, which was used as nothing more than a reality TV prop.

      1. It’s not a scare tactic when the fear is real.

Rioters have escalated their mischief over 3 months and it’s a reign of terror. You’re a despicable wretch Natch for not admitting it.

Rioters have been trying to escalate into more cities and yes also residential areas. Fact.

However, they have been, and will be, chastened for their audacity

        1. You are so full of it. The mostly-peaceful, but occasionally violent protests are happening on TRUMP’S WATCH. How in the hell can you blame Joe Biden for that? What is the reason for the protests? Can you read? What do the signs say? Are protesters wrong for complaining about unarmed black men being killed by the police? How is this nation supposed to heal without a leader who willing to address these concerns and begin the healing process, something which Trump is not only incapable of, but unwilling to do because he thinks he can leverage this for votes? The draft-dodging fake, fat, balding macho man talks cracking skulls, and it looks like he inspired that dumbass loser 15 year old who murdered people with his assault rifle. There is so much blood on those tiny hands.

The only “reign of terror” is Trump’s continued wrongful occupation of our White House, which, as last night’s Trump Fan Club Show proved, means nothing more than a prop. The dignity and history of this sacred edifice of American democracy mean nothing–it’s all a background for his fan club to cheer him, praise him, to bask in his glory. He stood there, illegally, on the people’s property and lied, stoked fear and falsely accused Joe Biden of being a socialist, supportive of anarchy, supportive of third-trimester abortion, a “destroyer of American greatness” (really? with a pandemic out of control, 10+% unemployment and the economy in full recession–how were things when Obama and Biden were in office?); “destroyer of American jobs” (10+% unemployment rate, the worst since the Great Depression, all because of Trump’s mishandling of the pandemic) and lied about: 1. Signing the Veteran’s Choice Act (that was Obama) and “rebuilding the military”–when was it destroyed? plus, Trump stole money from the Pentagon budget that Congress approved for military housing and schools to build his Mexico wall; 2. No approved COVID therapy; Remdesivir is being tried, but hasn’t been tested or approved for COVID; in any event, how can Trump take credit for medical research? 3. the NYPD does NOT endorse Trump; 4. There are fewer violent crimes, including murder, now than in the 90’s; 5 Only 3 miles of new border wall have been built–not 300–the rest is replacement of existing wall; 6. the US does not have the most or best testing; in fact, Trump’s trying to slow down testing, so he can create fake “success” at controlling the virus; 7. the US is not doing better than other countries on handling the virus, and this is due to Trump’s utter incompetence. Plus, he stokes fear, telling “suburban housewives” that rioters are coming for them, and that Biden will destroy their home values because he’ll put in low income housing.

            1. Yeah, well the FDA did the same thing for hydroxychloroquine, and they were forced to rescind emergency approval after studies showed it was ineffective. Remdesivir was given as a last-ditch treatment before the FDA did anything, but it still hasn’t gone through the testing process. In any event, how can Trump take credit for that?

          1. “unarmed black men being killed by the police”

Jacob Blake was armed with a knife, and we do not know if he was reaching for a gun under the seat of his car.

You resist police commands, you struggle with them, you run to your car reaching under the seat, and guess what might happen to ANY one?

            1. No, Blake was NOT “armed” with anything. Police found a knife in his car. But how does that justify shooting him in the back 7 times, in front of 3 small children? He was no threat to them. Now, he’s a paraplegic.

              1. According to the person who took the Blake video from the driver’s side, the officers were very clearly yelling “Put down the knife. Put down the knife.” All before they fired.

          2. “supportive of third-trimester abortion”

He is. Dems are. Have you seen the Democrats position on this issue?

        2. Kurtz I’ve seen you on this blog encourage and rail on about training and getting ready to deal forcefully with the demonstrators and, lo and behold, a 17 yr old takes your advice, kills a couple people doing exactly what you recommend and is up for murder charges. He’s fortunate to be 17 when he really should be tried as an adult. Prison will not be an experience he wants although the AB will try to shield him off as best they can. General population will see him getting tested and exposed on a daily basis.

      2. It really is a tragedy, Natacha, that you can write so many words yet are unable to comprehend the words of others. I can’t imagine how completely out-of-sorts you must continually be, having to interact with a world of rational people with the ability to understand what they read or hear–especially when the thought or voice comes from outside your head.

        You have my sincerest sympathies.

        1. Have you any substantive, factual responses to what I write? Of course not, and this is a prime example of what Trump has done to this country: insult people and call them names when you disagree with them.

      3. Talk about stoking fear: Trump telling “suburban housewives” that rioters are coming for them

You are one hideous human being. Did you forget what happened in Ferguson? Tell your fable to the McCloskeys in St. Louis. Tell that to the family of this man and his stepdaughter in South Carolina.

South Carolina college student and her stepfather shot dead over a fender-bender, police say
        https://www.westernmassnews.com/south-carolina-college-student-and-her-stepfather-shot-dead-over-a-fender-bender-police-say/article_e3e08b8b-4586-5a5a-aca0-f80ac6119b98.html

You talk about this happening on Trump’s watch. Do you understand our system of federalism? On one side of your mouth, you are saying that this President is not doing anything to stop the violence and chaos, with no mention of the feckless local and state leadership that has a duty first to stop it. And if they need federal assistance, they have to invite it in. Trump has done everything short of executing the Insurrection Act. This is where the other side of your mouth is talking. If the President did that, you would be foaming at the mouth that he was being a tyrant and abusing the powers of his office. You may believe the horse$hit you’re shoveling, but I am absolutely certain you’re in an extreme and ever diminishing minority.

        1. Stop calling that pig “President”. That is a sacred title reserved for those who don’t cheat their way into office with the help of a hostile foreign government. He neither has respect for the office nor the White House, proven by last night’s disgusting display of narcissism. Here’s what you don’t seem to understand: being POTUS means being a standard-bearer, a healer, a problem-solver, a uniter, someone who finds ways to bring people together to pursue the common good. Instead, your hero lies about his own lack of accomplishments, lies about Joe Biden, tries to undo everything Barak Obama did, calls foreign leaders insulting names and stokes division and fear. In 2016, it was fear of those brown people from south of the border. In 2020, it’s fear of protesters. A worthy leader would address the nation about the concerns of the protesters, and find some way to heal our divisions. Trump is incapable of that because he thinks he can leverage the violence to his advantage. Plus, he really doesn’t care if the police murder unarmed black men. Overall, the protests have been peaceful. Protesters are not coming for “suburban housewives”, and Joe Biden isn’t out to destroy their property values. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris both condemn violence, and both are empathetic to the families of those unarmed black men killed by police. People are right for protesting these killings.

          1. Stop calling that pig “President”.

            Bwahahahahahahhaha

          2. Kamala Harris was sending out tweets with the link to the Bail out fund for the “protestors” that got arrested and encouraging donations. Here’s a hint: the protestors that got arrested were violent ones. Kamala Harris also said “don’t stop, keep it up.”

      4. “Was there anarchy, chaos or violence when Obama and Biden were in the White House?” Yes.

“Where does Trump get off claiming Biden couldn’t handle this crisis” Because it is obvious Biden could not handle it.

“Biden and Harris understand that this country needs healing after what Trump has done, and they are the people to do it.” No, they are not.

“Talk about stoking fear: Trump telling “suburban housewives” that rioters are coming for them.” Because they are.

      5. Does anyone really believe that Joe Biden could make a 71 minute speech like Trump did. I don’t. Too cloudy upstairs.

  9. This is a great example of how by comparison, yesterday’s topic of the Hatch act is but a grain of sand by comparison. Does anyone think people such as these care a whit about the intricacies of law or are even aware of them? Their lawyers are more akin to nannies, and heaven help those poor nannies.

  10. Yes, curious why Asha doesn’t go by her first name Renuka. Such hypocrisy.

  11. Evidently Asha cannot take the heat, however, haven’t we come to expect doxxing from the Communist News Network?

  12. “Those appear purely aspirational concepts in this incident.”
That is giving them far too much credit. It’s merely propaganda, not aspirational.

  13. If this woman and other South Asians are so damn concerned about “racism in America,” why didn’t they stay in India where people are part of castes and many are considered nothing but dirt? This is the problem with immigration since 1965, the country has been flooded by people who are not Americans in the true sense of the word.

    1. Good point Sem. I don’t dislike Hinduism, though Im not a Hindu. Caste is part of it. I really have no problem with their religion, for them. But if they want to practice it on the one hand, and criticize us here, that’s offensive presumptuousness on their part.

Anyways I don’t care too much for Nikki Haley, she seems like a foot dragger. It’s good she tastes a little bit of trouble. Maybe it will toughen her up.

  14. Rangappa is simply a radical liberal who always goes after anyone that does not believe in what she believes in. CNN nothing more anyone can say about CNN. When Trump wins reelection, perhaps some one will come in and clean up CNN and return to a news network vs anti Trump/Pro Dem spin machine or hate 24 hours a day. Years ago CNN was a great news network not anymore its a scandal rag.

  15. Nikki Haley was an incompetent governor and a Trump tool at the UN. From time to time she has pretended to be shocked, appalled and disturbed by Trump but it was all faux. She’s a political opportunist. How do I know? I live in SC and watched what she and her Republican crew did to SC and the country.

    1. I live in SC and watched what she and her Republican crew did to SC and the country.

Please share specifically what you believe she and her Republican crew did.

    2. I don’t particularly care for Nikki Haley.

But I am very familiar with all things SC.

What exactly did Haley do to SC, that wasn’t already there in the first place?

  16. Quote from the greatest Republican leader “a house divided against itself cannot stand” by Abraham Lincoln. Can America survive with this much unhealthy competition and division between parties? Has anyone noticed nobody is talking about debt and deficits that our children will inherit?

    1. Answer to Ashcroft. The saying now is, “we are all MMT people now.”

Practically speaking, there is no partisan difference over Federal Reserve Policy.

Some people speculate, this reflects the control of major US social, political, and economic institutions, by a global financial plutocracy.

Republicans will fight them rhetorically, and on some policies like fair trade over free trade, but have not worked up their nerve to really hit back at Wall Street yet.

If they want a solid future, they’re going to have to find ways to push back at the financialists.

They’re going to have to go past fighting the mercenaries, up a level to who pays them.

  17. Pappa! Ran Away Pappa!
What kind of people have run away Pappas?
Fat kids, skinny kids, kids who climb on rocks.
    Dumb yids, freaky squids..
    Even kids with chicken pox..
    Lose Pappas.
    They lose Pappas.
    The dad’s. Kids. Like.
    To bite!

(To tune of Armour Hotdog song)

  18. I hope the intern sues CNN and Rangappa personally for invasion of privacy. Doxing in context of encouraging violence, mob protest or other harassment shouldn’t be allowed to continue.
