James Madison University has been under fire for a controversial video used for diversity and social justice training of employees. The video details groups of privileged and oppressed persons. While employees were reportedly told not to share the material with others, the material became public before the school suddenly pulled it off of its sites. What stood out for me was the inclusion of the term “heteroromantic” as a privileged group juxtaposed with the countervailing oppressed groups of “homoromantic, Aromantic, bi/panromatic” individuals. I had not previously seen those categories in such materials, so I sought out some definitions.
The training identifies various types of people at “agents” of privilege including able-bodied people, people between 30-50, “man, cis-gender people,” heterosexuals, Christians and “heteroromantic” people. Under the chart, many students would fit a type of uber-privileged conglomeration of all of the categories. This has led to many objecting to the implications of being tagged in this way — putting them opposite (and implicitly responsible for) oppressed groups. While half of the chart refers to the “privileged” (rather than the “oppressors”), the other half refers to the “oppressed.”
What was striking is the separation of heterosexuals and heteroromantics as separate categories for privilege. Merriam-Webster defines “heterosexual” as “of, relating to, or characterized by sexual or romantic attraction to or between people of the opposite sex.”
The training was presented by Jennifer Iwerks (assistant director for Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression programming) and Jessica Weed (coordinator of student activities). In her own identity disclosure, Iwerks identifies herself as “”temporarily able-bodied.”
For those who were not familiar with the heteroromantic category, here is how such terms have been defined on other sites:

The university has now removed the video but has not made any other statements on the training program or underlying categories.
I know things have been brewing for awhile. But, all these classes and categories are a newer thing that hit society very quickly. Why? And most importantly; Who promoted this?

The current situation certainly has that potential. I don’t think that the Taliban has overlooked the potential and they probably see more opportunities in it than we do, certainly more than our Woke US Military leaders can see.

Chris, we likely live in different states, but when I had a problem with trees and power lines I called the power company. They ameliorated the risks from tree and power line interactions. Maybe you can work with them to at least reduce some of your risk or get them to remove the tree.

For the record, to any other armchair experts and harry homeowners out there who feel the need to tell me how to do my own job, yes I am aware of the power company and I cut trees routinely over power lines its my job. I realize I am only 60 soon to be 61 but I do think I’m starting to get the hang of it.

Its rare but I know he cannot if he doesn’t, so whether in vain or not I at least make the attempt that perhaps some jot or tittle might in some way help express a different vantage point from a side he might not often hear from. And this only because I’ve followed him for so long since the early years, reading his articles, watching him on Meet the Press or similar venues, etc and he is concerned about many of the same things I am concerned about. Namely freedom of speech and some of the more libertarian ideals and mores’ that we share a viewpoint on. But namely free speech, which I too am alarmed over the erosion thereof, which started a lot earlier than this current administration as did our rights to privacy. Its all disappearing and everyone just seems happy with these new Orwellian mores’ and ideologies so its important that someone is out there with the training and credentials and experience as well as the access like Jonathan Turley to remind people what the Bill of Rights was all about, and why we have a right to privacy, a right to own a firearm, a right to speak freely, etc. These things are fundamental to who we are as a people and always have been and the erosion of them is the end of civilization as all who went before knew it. And I for one don’t want to be one of the last of the free people so hoping for the best.
I could care less what some anonymous people have to say because I don’t know who I am talking to, it could be some nutjob in his moms basement or it could be some paid consultant in Russia trying to keep division going strong, it could be some political operative paid by a party or lobbying group, it could be anyone. It must exist for true freedom of speech to exist, or those in fear of retaliation or some kind of penalty imposed by a govt or other body might limit their expression. So of course it must exist and this blog of all would naturally allow it. Its not about whether we can or can’t. Its about whether we should.

As it just so happens, we agree. Party politics are the problem — voting Republican or Democrat is simply a false binary choice (né: Hegelian dialectic). The parties are controlled by their wealthy donors — those who “vote” with the most dollars have the biggest say. Bipartisanship simply means that large donors to both parties gave money to see a particular law passed or policy implemented. The wealthy are more concerned with policies that benefit them — the best you’ll get out of this contrived binary choice is elite factionalism masquerading as popular democracy…
This primary concern for policies over party and tepid political personalities partially explains why the establishment hates Trump so much. I can’t say why Trump decided to run for the Presidency in ’16 but, whatever his reasons, he wasn’t supposed to win. My guess is that his candidacy began as a straw-man for Hillary to knockdown as she cruised to victory. Looks like she didn’t tell Trump.
Whatever the case, I don’t know if Trump is an actual populist, but he campaigns and speaks (and tweets) like one. His appointments, on the other hand, belie that carefully crafted image. Perhaps it’s simply that Trump dared mention foreign policy and “bringing the boys home” from our wars and bases overseas. Or that he was willing to cut off “threat labor” illegally streaming over the southern border. Or that he threatened Obamacare and health insurance profits… Or that his America First and Make America Great Again agenda — bringing U.S. manufacturing back from overseas — threatened corporate and Wall Street profits.
Trump’s popularity and rhetoric threatened the bipartisan political status quo by giving voice to a large and a growing number of Americans directly and negatively affected by long-term bipartisan policies. Simply put, he rocked the political boat on substantial policy issues, which is what got him both elected and demonized.
And Biden’s “election”, confirms this, in my opinion. The establishment pulled out all the stops to rub Trump’s, and his supporters, noses in it. Biden’s obvious senility, not to mention corruption, mediocrity and actual racism prove the point — Bernie was the better candidate, but he didn’t send the right message…

A few days ago, I posted a proposal to limit political campaign contributions — only natural persons residing within the contested political district could make political contributions to the candidates in the calendar year before the election. Or, in other words, impair the ability of the wealthy to dominate politics using Citizens United, corporate “speech”, and poor USSC precedents.
So how about more food for thought?

In each election for President, Vice President, Senator and Representative, in any state, a None of the Above choice shall also be placed on the ballot. Should None of the Above receive a plurality of votes, no candidate shall be seated; the election shall be held again in sixty days.

I hear you brother. At 54 and still hard at it doing elevators. It’s funny when you run into armchair commandos on the “interwebz” whom try to advise you on your expertise. It’s endemic in our internet based mentality youth/society that have no real skin in the game of ACTUALLY doing things with their hands , and as often with their minds ( LOL ) .
To wit try and find anyone 18 -30yrs old that has any common sense , any mechanical or electrical ability , let alone a decent work ethic….they just are not out there. Our ‘educational farce” in this country has been thoroughly nullified-comprimised by unionized teachers not held accountable , diversity dumbification at the expense of our youth and any vestige of common sense , government jerrymandering of what is taught and how it’s not. You have to conclude this is on purpose to create a divided nation of sheep ripe for the plucking of a gracious dear leader awaiting in the wings to save the ignorants from themselves. By any definition a despot , of course after they gut the constitution and make goobermint the new god…and we see it now plain as day with very questionable “elections” and fragile “leaders” so senile and stupid that them being elected defies common sense.
Meanwhile our southern borders are wide open and bring disease along with little desire to assimilate with them. Third world USA anybody ?.

I’m also sure some of them are paid political commenters, trolls from Russia trying to keep division going, …a few assorted nuts living in their moms basement reading soldier of fortune and waiting for the apocalypse, …and so on. I don’t care. Because if they don’t care enough about their own words to put their own names and profiles on them, then their words as far as I’m concerned mean very little. And one things for sure I’m not going to waste my time in tit for tats with anonymous commenters who can change handles as often as I change socks… wait that’s not a good example… I think these I had on yesterday…but you get the point. Its a fools errand and one for someone with endless time and the desire to argue back and forth endlessly with someone over who said what and what what means. I don’t. I have a day and a half a week of “down time” and maybe a few minutes here and there in the evenings if I am so inclined to log in and look at articles and leave a comment or thought or two. That’s it. Sunday mornings I tend to wax the most talkative, since I’m in my skivvies relaxing in front of the tube watching my animals destroy the house.
So please don’t bother. I’ve written this same thing a few dozen times, and I know most have seen it because they were high fiving their troll friends who I was saying it too. So don’t bother. I have nothing against anyone in here, I am not interested in arguing with any one I simply make some comments from time to time and usually ignore the trolls and anonymous crowd (not all anonymous posters are trolls, just the ones who “troll” you) and from time to time I may read a comment I think is well stated whether to me or someone else, and “like” it (place a like on it). That’s it. And I don’t like seeing my comments be buried by arguments over what the word “hubris” means or ignoring the bigger point to argue endlessly over the tit for tat nonsense that apparently awards dopamine points to the perceived “winner”.
