The University of Washington became the latest scene of Antifa violence this week with an attack on a conservative reporter and several other people. Antifa often attacks reporters who are critical of their actions and the videotape shows at least one person bleeding after the attack on reporter, Jonathan Choe, and his team.
The University of Washington issued a statement that campus police “are busy keeping the Turning Point USA event and other areas of campus as safe as possible. We take any assault seriously, and UWPD will be investigating these incidents, gathering statements and video footage that may be available.”
Despite the denial of its existence by figures like Rep. Jerry Nadler (D., N.Y.), I have long written and spoken about the threat of Antifa to free speech on our campuses and in our communities. This includes testimony before Congress on Antifa’s central role in the anti-free speech movement nationally.
As I have written, it has long been the “Keyser Söze” of the anti-free speech movement, a loosely aligned group that employs measures to avoid easy detection or association. Yet, FBI Director Chris Wray has repeatedly pushed back on the denials of Antifa’s work or violence. In one hearing, Wray stated “And we have quite a number” — and “Antifa is a real thing. It’s not a fiction.”
We have continued to follow the attacks and arrests of Antifa followers across the country.
Some Democrats have played a dangerous game in supporting or excusing the work of Antifa. Former Democratic National Committee deputy chair Keith Ellison, now the Minnesota attorney general, once said Antifa would “strike fear in the heart” of Trump. This was after Antifa had been involved in numerous acts of violence and its website was banned in Germany. His own son, Minneapolis City Council member Jeremiah Ellison, declared his allegiance to Antifa in the heat of the protests this summer. During a prior hearing, Democratic senators refused to clearly denounce Antifa and falsely suggested that the far right was the primary cause of recent violence. Likewise, Joe Biden has dismissed objections to Antifa as just “an idea.”
It is at its base a movement at war with free speech, defining the right itself as a tool of oppression. That purpose is evident in what is called the “bible” of the Antifa movement: Rutgers Professor Mark Bray’s Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook.
Bray emphasizes the struggle of the movement against free speech: “At the heart of the anti-fascist outlook is a rejection of the classical liberal phrase that says, ‘I disapprove of what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.’”
Bray admits that “most Americans in Antifa have been anarchists or antiauthoritarian communists… From that standpoint, ‘free speech’ as such is merely a bourgeois fantasy unworthy of consideration.” It is an illusion designed to promote what Antifa is resisting “white supremacy, hetero-patriarchy, ultra-nationalism, authoritarianism, and genocide.” Thus, all of these opposing figures are deemed fascistic and thus unworthy of being heard.
Bray quotes one Antifa member as summing up their approach to free speech as a “nonargument . . . you have the right to speak but you also have the right to be shut up.”
We previously discussed the case involving another Antifa member who was convicted after taking an ax to the door of Sen. John Hoeven’s office in Fargo. He was given no jail time, and the FBI even returned his ax. He later mocked the government by posting on social media “Look what the FBI were kind enough to give back to me!”
For those who have sought to deny the existence of Antifa, this is Antifa.
Antifa is just a word Communists hide behind. It is made up almost entirely of biological males too timid to join the military, but who still covet the kind of prestige that goes along with manly endeavors. So they dress up in silly black pajamas and masks and are only too happy to push around old folks, knock down women on the street, or push around college students and journalists. It is nothing more than virtue-signaling for those too cowardly to swear an oath, put on an honorable uniform, and defend the country that provides them with the freedom to carry on their treasonous shenanigans. Is there any basis for your claims?
Yesterday, Newsweek reported that right-wing TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk decided to confront an encampment of pro-Palestinian students on the campus–ahead of his speaking engagement that was scheduled at 6:30 pm. Kirk is a right-wing firebrand whose anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-Islam views are well known. Newsweek says a “group of masked individuals who wore all black, held umbrellas and were seen taunting Kirk”. In a post on “X” following the incident Kirk claimed: “Our @TPUSA Frontlines reporter and his security guard have just been attacked by ANTIFA thugs…”.
Instead of trying to independently verify Kirk’s claims you just repeat them. That’s not what we would expect from a lawyer and law professor who should base claims on actual evidence. There appears to be no reporting or other evidence to suggest the anti-Kirk protesters were members or affiliated with Antifa.
As to TPUSA “reporter” Choe, himself, he is no stranger to violence. Case in point. PubliCola, a local Seattle news outlet, has a long article (4/19/24) on Choe’s involvement in a violent incident at a migrant camp in a parking lot outside the Garfield Community Center. A group of migrant sympathizers guarded the encampment. Choe showed up and demanded entry to the migrants. He was refused. A woman, only identified as “Celeste”, who was acting as an interpreter, told police Choe had a “retractable baton” and was threatening one of the migrants. She said: “The worst case scenario that was going through my head was that the migrant was going to defend himself”…and “I decided to physically get between Jonathan Choe and him,…”.
According to an eyewitness Choe grabbed Celeste’s phone and ran off. Celeste gave chase and confronted Choe. The eyewitness says that’s when Choe “threw [Celeste] down and started punching and kicking her in the face”. Celeste reported to police that Choe told her: “‘I’m going to turn off my phone so there’s no evidence’, and punched me”, striking the left side of her face…”I kind of stumbled to the ground, and he grabbed my hair and ripped a chunk of my hair out”. The PubliCola article includes a copy of the police report.
But you defend Choe falsely claiming Antifa is responsible for all the violence. When it comes to actual violence the actual perpetrators are people like Choe who claims he is just a “reporter”. Choe is a provocateur. Legitimate reporters don’t engage in violence!

The incident you mentioned, they were there to protect the event from proud boys groups threatening the peaceful event. They were there legally armed and didn’t engage in violence. I’m sure you are quite capable of finding out for yourself. Charlie Kirk is a right-wing antagonist who seeks publicity by confrontation and provocation. The reason we know about the incident is because Charlie Kirk posted the video. He WANTS the publicity and provokes groups into reacting or engaging in violence to “show” how bad the other groups are.
He was there to confront pro-Palestinian protesters and try to provoke a violent response to “prove” how violent they are. But the protesters knew he was there for that reason and they called out to protesters not to engage with Kirk. The only ones who engaged was ANTIFA who often clashes with Kirk’s group of supporters and “reporters”.
What is not mentioned is no pro-Palestinian protesters engaged with Kirk and his “reporter” and still remained peacefully engaged in their protest.
Charlie Kirk deserves blame for seeking to provoke and antagonize protesters. He does this for publicity and it encourages his supporters and fans to provoke and antagonize protesters into violence. At few scuffles ensued at the event, but only one recorded by Kirk was posted for Kirk to get publicity. That’s why Turley was able to write about it and use it to make a dishonest portrayal of ANTIFA and the rest of the pro-Palestinian protesters.
