Below is my Hill column on the assassination attempt of former president Donald Trump. We all watched as the horrific scene unfolded on television. It was a traumatic moment for the entire country, but it was hardly surprising given this age of rage. We are still learning about the suspected shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, was from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He was able to use a roof top 130 yards away from the rally for the assassination attempt. He is being described as a registered Republican but donated to a Democratic political organization.

The assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump left a nation stunned. But the most shocking aspect was that it was not nearly as surprising as it should have been. For months, politicians, the press and pundits have escalated reckless rhetoric in this campaign on both sides. That includes claims that Trump was set to kill democracy, unleash “death squads” and make homosexuals and reporters “disappear.”
President Biden has stoked this rage rhetoric. In 2022, Biden held his controversial speech before Independence Hall where he denounced Trump supporters as enemies of the people. Biden recently referenced the speech and has embraced the claims that this could be our last democratic election.
I discuss this rage rhetoric in my new book, “The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage.” We are living through an age of rage. It is not our first, but it may be the most dangerous such period in our history.
Some of us have been objecting for years that this rage rhetoric is a dangerous political pitch for the nation. While most people reject the hyperbolic claims, others take it as true. They believe that homosexuals are going to be “disappeared” as claimed on ABC’s “The View” or that the Trump “death squads” are now green lighted by a conservative Supreme Court, as claimed by MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.
Rage is addictive and contagious. It is also liberating. It allows people a sense of license to take actions that would ordinarily be viewed as repulsive.
As soon as Trump was elected, unhinged rage became the norm as with Kathy Griffin featuring herself holding the bloody severed head of Trump.
Just recently, another celebrity, actress Lea DeLaria, begged Biden to “blow [Trump] up” after the recent presidential immunity decision. DeLaria explained that “this is a **** war. This is a war now, and we are fighting for our **** country. And these a**holes are going to take it away. They’re going to take it away.”
For months, people have heard politicians and press call Trump “Hitler” and the GOP a Nazi movement. Some compared stopping Trump to stopping Hitler in 1933. Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) declared Trump “is not only unfit, he is destructive to our democracy and he has to be eliminated.” He later apologized.
Others say that Trump “will destroy the world” unless he is stopped.
I do not believe that the politicians or pundits engaging in what my book calls “rage rhetoric” want actual violence. But they have knowingly created conditions for extremist views and, yes, extremist actions.
The media has been quick to denounce reckless rhetoric from the right while largely ignoring the same language on the left. That included threats against conservative Supreme Court justices before the assassination plot against Brett Kavanaugh.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) went to the steps of the Supreme Court and called out Kavanaugh by name: “I want to tell you, (Justice Neil) Gorsuch. I want to tell you, Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”
Again, I do not believe that Schumer wanted Nicholas Roske to go to the home of Justice Kavanaugh to kill him. However, these politicians also know that some citizens will hear this rhetoric as a justification for violent conduct.
Thus, when the president is claiming that the election may end democracy in the nation, it can be heard as much as a license as a warning, particularly when he adds “we’re done talking about the debate, it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye.”
We still do not know about the shooter in this assassination attempt. However, we know all too well how unhinged people can find justification in the incendiary rhetoric of our politics. This moment did not occur in a vacuum; it occurred in a time when our leaders long abandoned reason for rage.
We have come full circle to where we began as a Republic. In the 1800 election, Federalists and Jeffersonians engaged in similar rage rhetoric.
Federalists told citizens that, if Jefferson were elected, “Murder, robbery, rape, adultery, and incest will be openly taught and practiced, the air will be rent with the cries of the distressed, the soil will be soaked with blood, and the nation black with crimes.”
Jeffersonians warned that, if Adams were reelected, “chains, dungeons, transportation, and perhaps the gibbet” awaited citizens and they “would instantaneously be put to death.”
Both sides stoked the anger and fears of the public, and violence was seen across the nation.
In our current age of rage, politicians have sought to use the same anger and fear to rally support at any cost.
This is the cost.

Mr. Turley, I am disappointed that you equivocated the language of the left and the right in your opinion. You rightfully state that the left “claims that Trump was set to kill democracy, unleash “death squads” and make homosexuals and reporters “disappear.”” But you also incorrectly indicate that those of us on the right have been inflaming things with our rhetoric by stating, “The media has been quick to denounce reckless rhetoric from the right while largely ignoring the same language on the left.” However, you did not provide even one example of rhetoric from the right that would rise to the level of potentially resulting in violence. I am tired of people, including Biden’s recent remarks, grouping the left and the right together in their use of unacceptable rhetoric. It is the left that incites violence with such hateful speech. They project the hate and violence to the right, but that is a false narrative.

ABC News is reporting the shooter who attacked DJT used an AR-style rifle. The Dems in Congress have long called for restrictions on the purchase of these weapons of mass violence. The MAGA Republicans in Congress have refused to back restrictions on AR-15 style guns. The MAGA wing of the SC just endorsed “bump stocks” that turn AR-15s into a machine gun. The Q is who is actually encouraging gun violence? Ain’t coming from the Dems!
The answer to threats to our Democracy is not to kill the leading proponent of political violence. The answer is to defeat DJT at the polls in November–then to continue his criminal prosecutions and put him in prison where he belongs!

“In April, 72-year-old Lonnie Coffman of Falkville, Alabama, was sentenced to four years in prison for bringing loaded guns, ammunition and Molotov cocktail ingredients to Washington on Jan. 6.
The weapons were found in his truck—parked less than half a mile from the Capitol building—which he left to attend a rally at the National Mall. A statement by the Department of Justice said Coffman “also carried a loaded handgun and a loaded revolver as he walked around the area that day.”
In March 2022, 49-year-old Texan Guy Reffitt, was convicted (among other charges) for being unlawfully present on Capitol grounds while possessing a firearm and transporting firearms during civil disorder.
A Department of Justice indictment from January 2021 also states that Christopher Alberts, Maryland, was found carrying a Taurus G2C semi-automatic handgun on Capitol grounds on January 6.
Off-duty Drug Enforcement Administration agent Mark Sami Ibrahim, 32, was also indicted by a grand jury for bringing a firearm within the United States Capitol and its grounds.
In an article for Newsweek, Nick Suplina and Justin Wagner of Everytown for Gun Safety said they had identified “12 individuals allegedly tied to the events of Jan. 6 who were arrested in Washington, D.C., and charged with firearms offenses.”
A U.S. Capitol Police intelligence division report also found posts on now defunct blog thedonald.win in the lead-up to Jan. 6, which, the report said, contained “several comments [that] promote confronting members of Congress and carrying firearms during the protest.”
Further comments on the site included “Bring guns. It’s now or never” and “Don’t cuck out. This is do or die. Bring your guns.”
But while there is clear evidence showing that firearms were indeed brought into the January 6 march, the underlying claim itself is somewhat of a red herring, because it implies that possession of firearms is somehow a condition for an insurrection.”

Have you noticed that the MSM seems hesitant to use the words “Trump” and “assassination” together? (NYT: “Trump hurt after shooting.”) Why should that be? First, I suggest that the word “assassination” would associate Trump in the minds of their audience with JFK, RFK and even FDR. That is sacred territory. Trump bragging to his MAGA supporters that he will attack gays, asylum seekers, doctors providing reproductive health care, etc, if he is reelected is the root cause of this. Trump’s acts of political violence started the day he was elected and continued to be what you call ‘the age of rage’ every day he was in power. Trump’s racism from the Oval Office culminated in the police murder of George Floyd in Minnesota. Of course grassroots protests immediately took place in Washington DC at the White House that is the center of Trump’s racism. The White House is a long way from the city police of Minneapolis, Minnesota where George Floyd was murdered by police who heard Trump’s call to oppress black Americans, but Trump’s presidential racism permeated the entire country, affecting black Americans in Washington DC exactly as it did in Minnesota.
The reaction of Americans to George Floyd’s murder by professional police responding to Trump’s dogwhistles was far more visceral and widespread than the news of this Republican youth barely out of high school attempting to harm Trump. In the aftermath of racist police murdering Floyd, grassroots protests sprang up across the nation within hours in support of George Floyd’s family and demanding an end to Trump’s racism. Those protests from an enraged American public continued through the months that were the remainder of the 2020 election campaign. There will be no such protests against this act of violence carried out by Americans in support of Trump. Not for months, not even for one weekend. No Republican group will step into the public eye to protest in support of Trump as Black Lives Matter and Antifa stepped forward to support George Floyd and black Americans. Perhaps Trump’s supporters and groups like the NRA knew that eventually a Republican disgruntled with Trump’s false promises and lies would turn on him and resort to gun violence as Republicans usually do, and of course using an AR15 to do so.
Now will Republicans finally admit that it is finally time to ban and do a buyback of all the AR-15 assault weapons? If they won’t ignore the obvious when the letters of the AR15 name stand for Assault Rifle, maybe this act of assault weapon violence against their convicted felon leader Trump will finally lead to them rejecting the gun industry that buys them by pouring millions of dollars into their pockets. Such perfect irony that Trump was nearly harmed by the products of the gun industry and NRA that shield him while buying members of Congress.

After studying the cop body cams, and pulling up sales literature for the Ford hybrid police van, it is rather obvious that carbon monoxide poisoning from being restrained too close to the tailpipe of a running ICE engine was what asphyxiated George Floyd. The dishonest “blue line” of the M.E. in attempting top bury the death as a natural heart attack was the first corrupt act. That ignited a firestorm of anti-cop vitriol that focussed on neck compression as cause of death, the 2nd huge mistake.
Finally, the state’s forensic expert lied on the stand that CO2 poisoning would have left an indelible sign.
He knew better, that the blood is cleansed and reoxygenated by using an artificial CPR pump and “bagging” (artificial respiration) for an hour after Floyd died — then taking the first blood draw. The blood sample would have had to be drawn at the time when Floyd entered the ambulance in order to decide about CO2 poisoning. He lied to uphold the state’s bogus narrative of neck compression.
The cops should have gotten reckless negligent homicide for the tailpipe blunder. Not murder.
When is our country going to insist on honesty in the public square? Essentially, we learn nothing to help us navigate the future by rallying around deceptive narratives that feel comfortable.

There was a similar case in Miami when a police officer of Columbian origin killed a black felon. The blacks rioted, the officer was charged and convicted.
