The Indispensable Right Hits #4 on Amazon’s Bestsellers

I was delighted to see that my new book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage” hit #4 of the Amazon bestsellers today. Some readers reached out to me to say that they were disappointed that they received a delayed delivery date due to the demand surge.  I am happy to report that the problem has been addressed and Amazon received a reserve shipment. Simon & Schuster has also rushed a fourth printing to meet the demand and to avoid any delays in delivery.

There was an earlier shortage caused by demand and Simon & Schuster was able to rush out a printing. It is a good problem to have.

Thanks again to everyone who is interested in obtaining the book. It means a great deal to me to know that so many fellow citizens share my interest and my concerns over this “Indispensable Right.”

  1. Do you have any thoughts on the recent Musk controversy in the UK, Jon? (I’m talking about the way he commented on recent disturbances saying “civil war is inevitable”?) Can we not support free speech, while condemning such statements as stupid and irresponsible? To be fair, the situation for Sir Starmer is not straightforward either: he for his part did a publicity stunt ‘taking the knee’ to support BLM, well into the season of riots by Black Lives and Antifa after the death of Floyd & he never condemned the activities of either organisation.

  2. On a related note…

Justice Neil Gorsuch has a new book, released today. Curious topic coming from Gorsuch (and a co-author) given the rise in violent crime in many cities where blacks live and Democrats have run the government for decades, e.g. Richmond, Norfolk, Washington DC, Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit, etc

Would be good if Professor Turley wrote a similar book but include trends in violent crime

Over Ruled: The Human Toll of Too Much Law Hardcover – August 6, 2024
by Neil Gorsuch (Author), Janie Nitze (Author)

In Over Ruled, Neil Gorsuch and Janie Nitze explore these developments and the human toll so much law can carry for ordinary Americans. At its heart, this is a book of stories—about fishermen in Florida, families in Montana, monks in Louisiana, a young Internet entrepreneur in Massachusetts, and many others who have found themselves trapped unexpectedly in a legal maze.

Some law is essential to our lives and our freedoms. But too much law can place those very same freedoms at risk and even undermine respect for law itself. And often those who feel the cost most acutely are those without wealth, power, and status.

Deeply researched and superbly written, Over Ruled is one of the most significant books of the year. It is a must-read for every citizen concerned about the erosion of our constitutional system, and its insights will be key to the preservation of our liberties for generations to come.

  3. It is encouraging (we need that) that a book on speech is a big seller. Of course, it is discouraging that the attacks on our indispensable right make the book necessary.

  4. Glad to hear it, especially because it means there are still a lot of people out there who recognize the paramount nature of Free Speech in our country.

Unfortunately many people still don’t get it. They don’t realize there isn’t a more important freedom that we have than the right to speak freely.

Think about it. In our Bill of Rights, all other amendments rely on this one remaining intact. Without it there is no right to bear arms, because if they can control your speech about it they can silence any opposition to doing away with the 2nd Amendment.

Without the right to speak up there is no right to assembly or right to a speedy and public trial, or protections from excessive fines and bail.

Because once you can no longer speak freely, and the govt and corporations get to decide what you can and cannot say, then no one will be able to speak up or out against the removal of our constitutional protections and rights.

That’s why this book is important.

Because it deals with the heart of the problem, while the rest of the worlds running around dealing with the surface layer symptoms.

  5. I love this book. I can only devour about 10 pages at a time–as I find I need to digest the thoughts before turning the pages. This is an all encompassing and informative book for those who cherish our 1st Amendment.

  6. Well done, Professor Turley and Well deserved!! Timely Wisdom in your book much appreciated…

  7. Jonathan: The bad news keeps rolling for your boy DJT. Here’s a sampling:

—Now that Judge Chutkan is back in charge of the DC election interference case she is working overtime. Over the weekend she made short work of 2 motions by DJT. She denied them both. In a 16 page ruling, in one, Chutkan ruled there was no basis for DJT’s tortured claim he is the victim of “selective prosecution”.

—In another court ruling, SCOTUS just rejected a bid by Missouri’s AG to have DJT’s conviction in the NY hush money trial overturned. Only the usual suspects, Thomas and Alito, would have granted review.

—And it looks like DJT’s support among Republicans is in a nose dive. In the swing state of Arizona Mesa Mayor John Giles has formed a committee to oppose DJT. Joining the committee are former GOP Rep. Robin Shaw and DJT’s former press secretary Stephanie Grisham. And a new poll released today shows Harris holds a nearly 14-point lead over DJT among Hispanics in AZ.

—In another swing state, Pennsylvania, GOP politicians are defecting from DJT. Former GOP Rep. Jim Greenwood is leading a “Republicans for Harris” campaign. He calls DJT a “malignant narcissist” and “pathological liar”.

—In another poll, Morning Consult shows a whopping 82% of polled voters think DJT’s “poor decision making” and “erratic behavior” due to his age are major concerns. And among young voters and independents Harris has a lead of 5 points (48 to 44) over DJT. Even Nate Silver now gives the edge to Harris.

And what is DJT doing about all this bad news? He was on the right-wing podcast of Adin Ross. Ross asked DJT his response to his interview by the NABJ and Rachel Scott’s Qs. DJT said this: “She was nasty. Terrible person. She is horrible…If I owned that network I would fire her so fast”. Wake up, Donald. You can’t live on only retribution and vengeance! Besides, only in your demented dreams will you ever own any network!

    1. Supreme Left-Wing Troll Dennis McIntyre ..disgusting the way you poach time & space on Prof. Turley’s platform to advance your own regurgitation of WOKE FAKE NEWS… as always, your spin has nothing to do with the topic at hand… Your Value System of Disrespect is as Pathetic as your posts are disgusting……………

      1. I recently watched an interesting, and very cordial, conversation between Professor Turley and former ACLU chief Nadine Strossen on C-SPAN.

Nadine Strossen. That’s just like Kellyanne Conway, right?

    2. As much as I would love to claim Jonathan Turley as a Republican, when I watch interviews with him–he gives no indication of his party affiliation. Other than his admission that he grew up in a Democrat home, his recent party affiliation is unknown when reading his articles and watching his interviews. He calls “balls and strikes” as he sees them from a strictly legal point of view. His integrity and honesty is what I admire about him.

    3. Dennis – there is very little Chutckan can do. I do not know specifically about the selective prosecution decision – but the presidential immunity decision requires her to have a hearing on immunity – I would guess that she will stupidly make short work of that.
The is also likely to face the same motion to dismiss everything based on the fact that Smith is unconstitutionally appointed.
She may stupidly make short work of that.

Both decisions will be immediately appealed and she will once again lose jurisdiction. The DC court of appeals would then be required to schedule briefs from both sides. That alone should put us after the election. Lets Presume that democrats decide to keep this farce moving after the election.

Everything will head back to the supreme court. The DC case has already lost 2 of the 4 charges and the other two may not be sustainable without the two that were tossed. Further whether Chutkin likes it or not – the SCOTUS immunity decision probably tanks this entire case.
No matter what – it is going all the way back to SCOTUS unless Chutkin tosses it.

I beleive Smith is appealing the FL dismissal, I would bet that the 11th appelate court reverses Cannon – though cannons decision is correct and the 11th will already know that she can count on Thomas at the very least.
Frankly there is a small chance the 11th affirms Cannon. I think it is near certain that SCOTUS will affirm cannon.

There is a long long long history of SCOTUS tanking not merely back door appointments, but even laws that try to get arround the appointments clause. The most recent was when SCOTUS confirmed that Trump could fire the head of the CFPB and replace them with his own choice – contingent on senate approval.

My guess is that SCOTUS splits the baby – that would be consistent with past appointments clause decisions and say that US attorney’s promited to SC are constitutional, but anyone who is NOT currently appointed by the president and confirmed by the senate can not be made an SC.

Though there is the separate problem that there is no valid SC law – congress has not passed one, and SCOTUS could tank the whole SC process.

Further all or parts of the SC decision could easily be 9-0.
As this was another stupid mistake by the Get Trump loons.

Regardless, there is no means for Chutkin top have a snowballs chance in h311 of trying this vefoire Jan 2025 – or even befor Jan 2026 if by some miracle Harris were to be elected.

So grow up – the DC case is over.

Even the Brag case in NYC is effectively dead.

I will bet you that Merchan will delay both current motions to dismiss and sentencing until there is no time before the election to appeal.
Because if Merchan does not dismiss the case – Trump is going straight to the federal courts, possibly even straight to SCOTUS – though I do not think they will take a direct appeal. Regardless the NYC case is going to get dissmissed because Merchan allowed witnesses and testimony that is catagorically barred by the SCOTUS immunity decision. Worse still because the DA stated in closing that some of this evidence was CRUCIAL to the case – uit was not, but then the jury botched the verdict. Regardless, Bragg can not plead harmless error.
He probably will and Merchan will probably agree bit it is likely the Federal appeals court will make short work of thus and dismiss.
But Merchan will likely control the schedule such that Trump can not get a favorable decision before the election.

Regardless all of this is going to be dismissed.

I would further note that the E Jean Carrol case is also going to be dismissed by the federal courts. There is precident in the Jones v Clinton case to dismiss. While SCOTUS allowed the Jones trial to move forward, it barred on presidential immunity grounds the use of statements by Clinton about Jones made while he was president.

I am actually guessing the Carroll case will be quietly settled for an undisclosed amount (tiny) to make it go away. Trump does not want it lying arround forever, and Carroll stands almost no chance of getting any money at the end and could get stuck with huge legal bills.
Trump will likely cover legal fees, and the settlement will allow Trump to say whatever he wants about Carrol without ever getting sued again.

BTW I would note ALL these huge defamation cases are either going to be tossed or dramatically reduced – including the Alex Jones one. It is just a matter of time. Fox never should have settled with Dominion.

    4. SCOTUS has a long hiustory of wrongly blocking lawsuits between states. the MO AG decision is wrong, but not surprising.

As to GOP politicians – you can engage in all the wishful thinking you want – Democrats have more defections than Republicans over the past decade.

I have no idea about Hispanics in AZ – I do know that RCP’s AZ average of Polls has Trump up by 2.8 – that is outside the margin of error.
Infact RCP has Trump up in all swing states except MI and an EV tally of 297. Betting odds favor Trump by 10pts.

Trump is still up in PA by 1.8. There is a possibility that Harris selects Shapiro as VP, and there was a leaked add suffesting that she already has.

Of so that MIGHT put PA in play though even that is iffy. Shapiro won the Governors race against a very weak candidate with no money.
He won by portraying himself as a moderate democrat who could work with Republicans – PA is a deep purpole state, but it was VERY Angry about Gov. Wolf because he too promised to work with republicans but durring Covid and the 2020 election he steam Rolled the PA house and Senate, and Republicans were very angry with him. Shapiro already has some problems because he campaigned as supporting a PA School Choice measure – the election would have been much closer had he not lied about that. Further “shapiro”
Country in PA is also Trump country. There is also alot of baggage about Shapiro that has come out more recently.

My guess is that for a variety of reasons Harris is not picking Shapiro. While her MIGHT help Harris in PA – Shapiro has been very Pro Israel and that is going to Hurt Harris in MI.

Regardless Shapiro is Harris’s only hope to make PA competitive. You seem to forget that PA is where the assassination attempt occured.

I would further note that there is another PA case that I am sure you have missed. The PA Superior court has ruled that Ballots, and Mailin envelopes are covered by PA’s open records act law. That they are public records and must be provided to anyone who will pay for copies and be available for review. And apparently various court cases in PA have prevented the destruction of the 2020 Ballots – so there is going to be an independent Audit of ballots in PA from the 2020 Election. That is also going to make mass ballot harvesting in PA in 2024 much less likely.

    5. I note that you are no longer making ludicrously stupid polling claims.

You say Harris is ahead 48:44 among younh voters.

That should scare the crap out of you – if Harris does not win Young voters – the election is over.
Biden won young voters 61:36 in 2020 – that means Harris is WAY behind where she needs to be to win.

I do not know about AZ in 2020 but nationwide Biden got 59% of the Hispanic vote. Trump got 38

So AGAIN you are WAY Behind 2020

    6. I knoe thjat you think the NABJ interview was a win – it was not.

No one cares what Trump said about Scott -= and she was a nasty person and she should be fired – but there is a long list of people like that.

Regardless, George Stephanolpolis nearly came to blows with Reo. Donalds over this. Donalds stood his cround well and Staphanoplis looked like a fool.
I can not wait for the video of Staphaopolis saying that Harris was Asian years ago.

Harris’s race is completely unimportant and Trump made it clear he did not care about her race.
What he cared about was that she changed with the wind.

And that is going to be a HUGE attack on Harris. Gleenb Grewenwald did a seqmnent on Harris recently – Glenn is an actual liberal.
While he did not address thge race issue. he did a lifetime history of Harris’s political positions.
Greenwald pointed out that as CA politicians goe she was and is still a corporate shill. She is realitvely centrist as California democrats go.

However as Republcians have already noted – Harris voted to the left of Sanders and Warren in the Senate and has said incredibly stupid left win nut things as VP. Purportedly she is now trying to case herself as a centrist. Frankly based on who she currently SAYS she is she is almost paletable.

The big attack from Republicans on Harris is going to be that she is fake and a liar.

The NABJ remarks are just a preview of the coming – Kamala said this, then she said that, now she says this,
      on issue after issue.

One of Biden’s strentghs was that he could fake authenticity well.

      Harris can not.

I know you are euphoric. But prepare to be depressed.

I suspect that Trump will wait till after the DNC convention to hit Harris hard. That does not mean there will be no attacks now.
Just the large Harris is a fake attack will likely be after the DNC convention.
Harris will get a small bump from the DNC if she avoids a riot – and that is probably only a 60:40 bet.
But after that it is all down hill.

    7. Dennis there is already leaked Audio of Rep. Raskin plotting a coup in the house and Senate – When Trump is elected.

It is Democrats that are still running scared.

    8. as of May 2, 2024. Trump is worth 7.5B

Most of the major netoworks are owned by larger entites like Disney or comcast.

But NewsMaz is private and looking to IPO in 2025.
Trump could probably afford to buy it

    9. He who smiles last smiles longest. Fortunately for “DJT”, he’s up against the Worst Candidate of All Time who owns the Worst Presidential Record of All Time. Perhaps even the Most Dishonest Media of All Time can’t save her.
