The Indispensable Right Hits #4 on Amazon’s Bestsellers

I was delighted to see that my new book, The Indispensable Right: Free Speech in an Age of Rage” hit #4 of the Amazon bestsellers today. Some readers reached out to me to say that they were disappointed that they received a delayed delivery date due to the demand surge.  I am happy to report that the problem has been addressed and Amazon received a reserve shipment. Simon & Schuster has also rushed a fourth printing to meet the demand and to avoid any delays in delivery.

There was an earlier shortage caused by demand and Simon & Schuster was able to rush out a printing. It is a good problem to have.

Thanks again to everyone who is interested in obtaining the book. It means a great deal to me to know that so many fellow citizens share my interest and my concerns over this “Indispensable Right.”

  1. I will send copies to Antifa and BLM. They need to receive the message the most.

  2. Way to go, Professor! And I’m proud and appreciative to be able to comment on your blog.

  3. Right-wing think tanks are known to buy books in bulk to pass and sell to attendees at their love-ins. And sure as hell Turley’s book will be on those tables. And if he is selling the book to people and not groups, it really shows that P.T. Barnum was right………..

    1. I doubt you are correct – as if the goal is to give Turley money – that can be most cost effectively done in cash.

For almost 200 years John Stuart Mill’s “on liberty” was required reading for college students.

Her is an online coppy from Project Gutenberg.
      https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/34901/pg34901-images.html

But making the assumption that you are – do you really beleive almost anyone actually reads most of these political autobiographies – left or right ?

Democrats have always had a fund raising advantage over republicans. The willingness to exercise the power to regulate others draws vast contributions from those who seek to avid regulation or those who seek to regulate their competitors out of existence.

The media is cheering because after Joe’s money dried up – Harris was able to take in more in a few weeks than entire presidential campaigns 2 decades ago.

Though I still expect total political camapign expenditures in the US to be less than we spend on snack food.

  4. Jonathan: In my previous comment I pointed out that the right-wing in this country is trying to prevent voting–one of the last remaining ways Americans can exercise their “free speech” rights. Need evidence? Salon has an article today entitled “Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC is now under investigation for falsely claiming to register voters”. What’s that about?

Elon Musk, along with some of his other billionaire friends, set up “America PAC” to ostensibly help people to “register to vote”. The PAC’s website asked registrants to give their address, cell number and age. But instead of actually registering the voter the info is just stored away. Musk’s PAC has spent millions on this fraudulent practice in almost all the battleground states. When this deceptive device was first discovered Musk’s PAC deleted the so-called “registration form” from its website. This was just yesterday.

This comes after Musk has used “X” to amplify pro-Trump ads and suppressed anti-Trump ads or comments. Musk is no friend of Democracy. This is a guy who was born in S. Africa and is using his vast wealth to suppress “free speech” in his adopted country. Who is the real “fake” American?

    1. ‘Dennis’, imagine if you used your super powers for something good.

    2. Dennis – only government can register people to vote.

No democrat PAC can register voters.
      Musk can not register voters.

Musk promised many things – ONE of this is to help register voters.
      Just as democrat PACs do.

If as you claim registering with Musks PAC is somehow deceptive – then every single Democratic voter registration effort is also deceptive.

I would further note – Musk is NOT focused on voter registration – he has been open about the fact that he is focused on election integrity.

That inherently means preventing non-existance people from voting as well as ineligible people.

Registering people to vote, and GOTV efforts are NOT election integrity efforts.

Election integrity is not about pushing people to vote – that is a choice people must be allowed to make freely on their own.
Election integrity is about preventing fraudulent ballots and votes.

      1. “he has been open about the fact that he is focused on election integrity.”
        BS
“That inherently means preventing non-existance people from voting as well as ineligible people.”

Who was arrested for voter fraud in the past 8 years? Predominately republicans for voting twice. Non-existing people voting is a non problem made up by trump to make people scared. Looks like me succeeded in making you scared of a non problem.

        1. The star witness is a lawyer who was disbarred in Colorado. Who was she again? Oh yea, one of trumps star lawyers. Disbarred. Swing with trump, career is over.

      2. John Say: How could you get it so wrong–again? Musk’s PAC scheme was an attempt to deceive potential voters by making them think they were signing up to vote on his website when the opposite was true. The whole idea behind the fraudulent scheme was to bury the information in the “cloud” so when people showed up to vote they wouldn’t be registered. It had nothing to do with “election integrity”. It was about keeping turnout low so DJT could win!

And you falsely claim that “every single Democratic voter registration effort is also deceptive”. FALSE. When Dem volunteer register people to vote they ACTUALLY turn in the registration forms so voters will be on the rolls. I know because I have participated in “Get out the Vote” registration efforts in the past. You are whistling in the wind if you think anything you say on the subject has any merit!

    3. Please cite an textual example where X has artificially amplified Trump adds or artificially suppressed anti-trump adds ?

      1. X banned the White Dudes for Harris for a short period of time for an unknown reason.

X and specifically Musk, retweeted an AI generated image of Kamala, violating X rules on the use of AI

    4. While you are lying about what is occuring on Twitter(X).
At the same time you are massively hypocritical.

For years we all had to listen to you argue that it was free speech for the owners of scial media companies to amplify or supress the speech of users based on their own whim.

Now you are saying it is not free speech ?

      Alas, alas for you
      hypocrites that you be.

    5. If you want something to actually complain about – Zuckerburg has announced – after publicly committing – including in congressional testimony that he would NOT repeat his half billion dollar government take over GOTV efforts, that now that the race is a bit tighter and it will again come down to 7 swing states, that he is restarting his 15 county GOTV ballot harvesting efforts from within govenrment in 15 democratic counties.

So he is committing once again to the same election fraud we had in 2020.

Given that Trump remains the near certain winner, I expect a very thorough investigation after the election, including criminal ballot harvesting charges and a thorough investigation of all election fraud in 2024.

I suspect Harris is close to peak right now – though she may get a bounce from the DNC convention if there is no violence – though there are still indications that some left wing groups are unhappy with Democrats so we shall see.

Regardless, we are likely at or close to Harris’s peak.

There is likely nothing more that the left can do to Trump without jumping the shark even further.

While despondent Biden non-voters are coming back – atleast until they are reminded how bad Harris is.

Regardless,. the remainder of this election will be about defining for the electorate who Harris is.

After August her numbers will head down.

There are also questions regarding the pro harris polls – the polls are too divided to be accidental.

And just as in 2020 – Harris is NOT getting the crowds Trump is.

Trump had a rally in the same auditorium in atlanta that Harris did. Trump filled the auditorium to overflowing – without a single celebety.
Trump attracted a diverse crowd including large numbers of blacks.
There is some debate over whether Harris filled more than half the auditorium – despite providing free performances by two different Rappers.
Further many people left after the rappers performed, there is evidence that the Harris campaign was bribing homeless people to attend.
and Finally – I beleive it was MSNBC was caught photoshoping A Harris rally in PA to add large numbers of attendees.

    6. Deniis – almost two weeks ago you claimed Harris was way ahead in the polls – Today fir the first time she leads by something like 0.3% in the RCP poll average.

Trump is still ahead in every single swing state except Michigan.

It is possible that Harris wioll be at this point or maybe a bit higher through the end of the DNC convention – if Democrats can avoid riots they will get a boost from the convention,

And then they have a long downward road to the election. The economy is headed south. The border remains a mess. We are headed into a recession.. The Hunter CA trial will start – unless Biden pardon’s Hunter first – which he should do now – the Trial is going to be really bad – much worse than Delaware. Hunter deducted drugs and hookers from his taxes and the trial will be looking at exactly where his money comes from and Weiss has given immunity to numerous family members to FORCE their testimony.
You can not take the 5th if you have immunity.

Jobs are tanking – the mideast is getting worse.

Harris is going to try to blame everything on Joe and Trump.

There will be a bunch of sparring over debates – but there will be debates. My guess is Harris will be a no show for the Fox TownHall debate and Trump will go through with it anyway. And then Trump will show up for the hostile ABC debate.

Trump managed to use the Biden rules to his advantage in September.
He has a similar advantage over Harris. While she is not demented – she is crazy, and a lousy debater, and lousy off a teleprompter.
Frankl;y she is as bad with an unscripted news interview as Biden is.

I would note that Sherod Brown and John Testor are keeping their distance from Harris. They are trying to avoid going down with the ship.

      So have fund.

    7. “[T]he right-wing in this country is trying to prevent voting . . .”

As opposed to, say, nullifying the votes of 14 million of your supporters.

    1. I am waiting to hear again From Gigi about the wonderful left wing nut administration.
Joe’s Unemployment rate is now back to the same place it was in Oct 21, and likely will be above where it was when Trump left before the election.

The Judge in the California Hunter Biden case is threatening sanctions against Hunter’s attorney’s for bald faced lying in their pleadings.
That Trial will start soon and as I understand it will be far worse than the Delaware Gun case. Multiple members of the Biden family have been given Transactional immunity in order to compel them to testify. Or put more clearly the Biden family is going to testify about the tax evasion and corruption of the Biden family.
I am told that we should expect that Joe will pardon Hunter before the Trial – because this trial will be far more damaging to Joe and the rest of the Biden’s than Delaware.

While Weiss has bailed on the FAR Violations and all other charges that lead to Joe, this trial will STILL be all about the money that Hunter (and other Biden’s) did not pay taxes on – including where it came from. Worse still will be the testimony that Hunter deducted expenses such as Hookers from his taxes.

Further there are multiple charges of most egregious and willful tax evasion, and really no defense at all. Coupled with a long history of prior tax evasion. The potential sentences here are decades, Hunter has both a prior conviction and prior tax evasion that he is not being charged with because of statute of limitations – these are all admissible during the trial as pattern of conduct evidence – it is exactly the same conduct and can all be factored in for sentencing.

Most of us understand that Hunter is not going to jail. The only question is when will Hunter be pardoned and how broad will the pardon be.

it is likely better for Democrats to get this over with NOW – before the convention while it is easier to blame it all on Joe.

The stock market is heading back to the level it was when Biden took office.
Average inflation under Trump was 1.4%, average inflation under Biden was 6%/yr.

Average Growth under Trump was 2%/yr – INCLUDING 2020 which because of covid had ZERO growth.
Without 2020 Trump averaged nearly 3%/yr that is better than any president in the 21st century.

Biden average growth is below 2% and headed to obama levels (1.4%)

And it is increasing likely that we are headed into or already in a recession.
The SAHM indicator which has correctly predicted 10 of the past 11 recessions, indicates recession.

      Consumer spending has tanked,
      Consume confidence has tanked.
It is likely we are already in a recession.

    2. Why is “book” in quotes? It’s obviously an actual book.
Do you also write to “movie” makers, “car” companies, etc.
and tell them they’re doing something wrong by getting the word out?

    1. THREE exclamation points, Upstate?
Let me try! Sane and Normal! Spot on!

  5. I am about half way through and it has been a terrific read. Speaking as one of the non-lawyers here, I can attest that Professor Turley’s clarity and ability to tell a good story will grab and hold any reader’s interest.

      1. Read below as Dennis the Draft Dodger reminds us again of his low IQ and his jealousy of Turley.

Could Dennis have made something of his life? His daily steaming turds seem to be the pinnacle.

  6. Jonathan: Congratulations. But I won’t be buying your book. That’s because your views about the “Indispensable Right” of free speech have been extensively covered in many of your columns in recent years. The point of your book and your columns is that “free speech” rights are under attack by the government and liberal elites who are trying to silence conservatives in this so-called “age of rage”. Is there any basis for your frequents claims? The answer is a resounding “No”.

Free Speech on the right is flourishing today like at no other time in our history. Conservatives and right-wing views are all over social media. Examples are Fox News, the NY Post (both of which you publish columns), Breitbart, the Daily Caller, the Federalist, Red State, Sean Hannity, the Mark Levin Show, etc. The list is way too long to completely cite here. The point is that conservative and right-wing commentary is everywhere and neither government nor liberal elites have silenced or cancelled them.

The only places where “free speech” is actually under attack is coming from the right. We see it on “X” where Elon Musk silences those with views he opposes, right-wing politicians in states–trying to take away the right to vote for those who might vote Democratic, DJT’s “Project 2025” that has a prescription for silencing opposing points of view. Then, right-wing politicians have taken a woman’s “free speech” right to make her own reproductive decisions. The most glaring example of the suppression of “free speech” is in FL under right-wing Gov. DeSantis where books are banned under his “anti-woke” agenda. Those existential threats to “free speech” you don’t discuss in your book.

Your overstated claims remind me of Cervantes’ book where Don Quixote attacks windmills–imaging they are giants or dragons. From that book is derived the phrase “tilting at windmills”–to depict those who see imaginary enemies everywhere. You are the modern day equivalent of “Don Quixote”!

    1. ‘Dennis’ with a batting average here of .000
failing again to school a professor
using debunked talking points and TDS BS.

    2. Dennis two things can be true at the same time.

The modern left – both in the US and elsewhere in the world is actively the most censorious ideology that we have ever seen.
The left is using Dystopias like Brave New World and 1984 as howto manuals.

Almost no one thought that Orwells Newspeak was possible in the west – and yet here we are.

At the same time as we are in the most censorious period ever.
We are also the most free we have ever been – which is the tenuous thread that is saving us.

The left has been unable to compel total censorship.

As a result they have deeply divided the country and the world – between those who still have access to free information,
and those who live in the left wing bubble.

I would note that while I have not Read Turley’s book – it is not just conservatives that are being censored, and it is not conservatives who are the object of that censorship.

As has been discussed repeatedly – by Turley and myself and others – the targets of censorship by the left are often slight heretics on the left, more so than the right.

It should be clear to you just from this blog that those you disagree with are far better informed than YOU are.
Why – because the efforts to censor OUTSIDE the left wing bubble have been largely ineffective.

In 2020 – pretty much everyone on the right knew of the Hunter Biden laptop and the Biden’s corrupt foreign dealings before the election.
While those on the left were fed a steady diet of “russian disinformation” and “Right wing conspiracy theory”. Many of you still shill this nonsense today.

The big problem with left wing nut censorship is NOT what those outside of your bubble know. It is that those inside your bubble either never hear the truth or more frequently have been hornswaggled into beliving the truth is misinformation long before it gets to them.

You need not read “The indespensible right” – there is a 200 year old book “On Liberty” that will do the job just fine.
I hope that Turley’s book is incredible – but I would be surprised if he can reach John S Mill and “On Liberty”

On liberty is available for free many places on the internet – and Heterodox academy has published an illustrated translation from 19th century to 21st century english “All Minus one” also available for free – though if you wish to support heterodox accademy you can buy it on Amazon.

One of the many many many points that Mill makes directly addresses exactly the censorship we see today.

It is not enough that those on the left eventually hear criticism of their views or difference views than their own.
You MUST hear them as presented by the most capable advocates of those views.

You say that Brietbart and Fox (or the federalist society and Heritage) are still there and still free to speak. and that is true – so far.

But YOU do not hear their views from them. You get a prespun version of their views from the left.

This is why you end up shocked when for example the supreme court obliterates claims you have heard from the left.

“He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side; if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion.”
      John Stuart Mill,

“Free Speech on the right is flourishing today like at no other time in our history.”
To a large extent correct – but while the right hears its own views as well as those of the left, and hears them typically presented by their best advocates – left and right, the left lives in a bubble and gets no benefit from the flourishing of free speech.

” Conservatives and right-wing views are all over social media.”
On Truth or X that may be true – on FB or Google or … it is not.

      “Examples are”
No one questions whether there are examples of uncensored outlets. That does not alter the fact that the left censors all speech that they can – and that is mostly the speech of those such as yourself living in the left wing bubble.

You note all the alternatives – but do you ever read any of them.

“The only places where “free speech” is actually under attack is coming from the right. ”
      ROFL

“We see it on “X” where Elon Musk silences those with views he opposes,”
      Please cite actual examples.

“right-wing politicians in states–trying to take away the right to vote for those who might vote Democratic”
Again how so ? Recent polls of self identified illegal aleins have them self reporting that 14% of them are registered to vote”
Cleanup efforts in Ohio – which does a reasobaly good job of purging voter registration of dead people and others who are ineligable to vote, have still found hundreds of illegal aliens registered to vote – not throughout the state, but in individual counties.
Regardless, this is a stupid claim – Please cite a single actual real person who has been depreived the ability to vote by republicans ?

The only recent actual voters supression has been what we saw in Maricopa county where potentially more than 100,000 people – nearly all republicans were disenfranchised by voting machine problems that election officials were aware of more than a month before the election and ignored.

As is typical of left wing nuts – anything you do not like you make stupid claims about.

It is racist to have the same expectations of minorities as everyone else.
It is someohow racist and votger supression to have to correctly sign your name to a ballot envelope if you expect your vote to count,
it racist and voter supression to expect people to provide ID to vote.

It is censorship to thwart early emlementary school teachers efforts to perve young children.

Regardless, we can entirely eliminate all your claims of government censorship of schools, just go to vouchers and privatize all schools.

      “DJT’s “Project 2025””
There is npo DJT project 2025 – that is just the latest Heritage foundation update of a many decades old think tank plan for conservatives.
It has about as much chance of being implemented as it did in 2016.
It is large – 925 pages and almost no one including you has read it. It has many good ideas and some bad ideas.

“that has a prescription for silencing opposing points of view.”
Please cite from Project 2025 where it seeks to silence oposition views ?

Where in project 2025 is the section – for the FBI to politically censor social media – which they are back to doing.
Where in project 2025 is the section for governmetn to pay third party 501c3(s) to lobby to politically censor the internet ?

I am not selling project 2025 – or Trump’s actual platform, but you are LYING when you claim that it does any of the censorship that the left is already doing

“Then, right-wing politicians have taken a woman’s “free speech” right to make her own reproductive decisions.”
No one except rapists have EVER taken a womens right to make her own reproductive decisions.
If you do not want children – do not have sex. when you can get pregnant, or use birth control, or use the morning after pill, or get an abortion in the first 15 weeks of your pregnancy. There is nowhere in this country that all those choices are not available to you.
In addition no mattere where you are you are within Driving distance of a state where you can get an abortion often right up to the moment of birth.

Nor is this a free speech issue.
I absolutely support maximizing human liberty – including control of ones own body – all freedoms are not free speech.
Short of performing an abortion on a broadway stage – abortion is not expression, it is about the right to control your own body.

It is especially rich ranting about limiting the right to control your own body coming from the people who forced everyone – including young kids to wear an ineffective face diaper, who tried to force people into getting vaccinated or lose their jobs or other rights.

YOU do not get to rant about the right to kill your child until you have appologized for your efforts to control everyones bodies during covid.

“The most glaring example of the suppression of “free speech” is in FL under right-wing Gov. DeSantis where books are banned under his “anti-woke” agenda. ”
There is not a single book banned in Florida.

These absolutely moronic argumenbts are tedious and stupid.
You are free to buy or borrow any book published anywhere in the world. Neither Florida nor any other US governemtn limits your ability to do so.

You are NOT however free to dictate what teachers can force on children that are not their own without the consent of their parents.
Free speech does NOT include the right to force your expression onto children other than your own.

“Those existential threats to “free speech” you don’t discuss in your book.”
Given that Turley is not alltogether happy with Florida – I would bet that he does discuss those in his book – but how would you know, you have not bought or read it.

    3. In the encyclopedia article for “Ass”, there is a photo of Dennis McIntyre…

  7. I want to thank that poster that complained about the book being referenced in every comment section, I wouldn’t have bought one without their inspiration.

  8. One major tragedy of our times is the good number of our friends and relatives supporting Harris, many apparently oblivious (I hope) to the enormous damage done and being done by the Democrats to our civics, culture, cohesion and heritage. (Read Turley on the takedown of academic heroes of the past.)

  9. I already have my copy. Great book! Congrats! Your success is well deserved.

  10. Congratulations professor, it only took multiple plugs on every column since its release. Keep in mind though. Amazon is ranking your book at #4. Wait….weren’t you opposed to ranking? Because it was anti-free speech?

    1. *LORETTA

Commerce. Buying and selling, trade and barter distinguishing it from theft.

  11. In a peak-functioning free society, the responsibilities that accompany free speech are equally indispensable.

(By peak-functioning, I mean a society able to look back on its public policy and leadership-choice decisions without regret for serious blunders, or wasted time and energy over pointless squabbling. A society that never feels it was duped into taking a regrettable course of action unable to be reversed. A society that has a clear sense of the dividing line between passion for excellence and unhinged zealotry. A society that manages conflict constructively, and keeps it within the bounds of civility and cohesion. A citizenry that is self-regulating in conscientious in upholding these virtues.)

      1. LOL — your arrows are pointing at your own identity, steaming turd boy.
And your obsession with turds is disgusting. Seek help.

    1. Do you have proof for that or are you just spitballing?

Do democrats look at their current leadership choice with regret, bewilderment, or astonishment

      1. *LORETTA

Spitballing? I come here to enlarge my vocabulary. Hadn’t heard spitballing before but you could be just making shit up.

    2. “In a peak-functioning free society, the responsibilities that accompany free speech are equally indispensable.”

This is typical left wing nut logical error.

First – government can not impose consequences for allegedly irresponsible speech.
That is done by the responses of individual people.

The next is that a peak functioning free society is an oxymoron. In fact a peak functioning society is an oxymoron.

This is a constant left wing error. The beleif that some optimum is knowable much less obtainable.

Free society is inherently a recursive iterative refinement system that progresses towards what is perceived at the moment to be the optimum – nearly always attempting to optomize myriads of competing values.

There does not exist and can not exist any universally accepted conception of optimum.

It is trivially historically demonstrable that a free people will most closely approach whatever is understood as peak or optimal at the time.
That no other social arrangement even comes close.

But “peak functioning” is not even definable much less achievable.

A free society NEVER strives to best accomplish any one thing.
It always seeks to provide as best as is practical the many different values of many different people.

You are attempting to apply top down thinking to what is inherently a bottom up process.

You talk about public policy – truly free societies do not have public policies – individuals set their own goals based on their own values and
within that system of free exchange the differing values of each individual are accomplished as based as possible relative tot he values of others and the strength with which each value is held.

Free societies do not have leaders – at least not in the sense that you use. – individual leaders emerge advocating the values important to them and winning the support of those that share those values.

Government and therefor “public policy” and public leadership are limited to the very narrow domain of those things that can only be accomplished through the use of FORCE.

I would note that while free societies in practice are as efficient as we can get. They are NOT even close to optimal or efficient at ONE thing – and we would not want them to be. Because free societies strive to deliver the infinitely variable and changing values of each individual.

    3. ” A society that never feels it was duped into taking a regrettable course of action unable to be reversed.”

Again a complete misunderstanding of freedom, and free society.

The only possible societal regret is societal decisions – aka government, and societal regret is reduced – it CAN NOT be eliminate,
by only doing through government those things that REQUIRE the use of force.

Regaredless of how they are made – regretable decisions are unavoidable – including bad decisions by government.
We never have perfect enough knowledge to get everything right. Further we are always balancing multiple competing values and we will always regret our failure to perfectly acheive all of them.

Further – failure or atleast imperfect performance is the universal norm – whether decisions are made by government or individuals.

Perfection is not acheivable. There will always be some regrets.

That said some choices are better than others. The goal of a free society is not to make perfect choices, but to make choice that on the whole result in significant improvement in standard of living.

” A society that has a clear sense of the dividing line between passion for excellence and unhinged zealotry. A society that manages conflict constructively, and keeps it within the bounds of civility and cohesion. A citizenry that is self-regulating in conscientious in upholding these virtues.)”

You keep talking about society – yet your framework is about free society.
In a free society only those things that require FORCE are done by government.
All other choices are made by individuals alone or in the groups of their own choosing.

Your discussion about societal values either are constrained only to those things that require the use of FORCE.
Or are efforts to catch the wind – because societal values change as the individuals that make up society change their values.

Right now in most things it is republicans. That was not always the case. and may not be the case in the future.
